Shared from @historicminnesota . The Laverty-Martindale House is known as the best example of the Italianate style in La Crosse. Thomas Laverty started building a house on the site in 1859 but was unable to finish it when he returned home disabled from serving in the Civil War. In 1868, Stephen Martindale purchased the house and completed it. More additions and alterations were made in 1884, and the home remained in the family until 1977. Just imagine all the land that surrounded this house when it was first built. It really has the feeling of an old farmhouse, and maybe that's why I love it so much. The yellow and white exterior helps too, as does that wrap around porch and huge cupola! . #chasingfacades #ipulledoverforthis #whynotwednesday #archi_ologie #theamericanhome #circaoldhouses #archilovers #oldhomesarethebesthomes #oldhouselove #oldhousestyle #iloveoldhouses #historichomes #italianate #instahomes #yellowhouse #architecturelover #curbappeal #frontporchfriday #fridaysfrontporch #wraparoundporch #lacrossewi #wisconsin #visitwisconsin #brickstory #thisoldhouse #nationalregisterofhistoricplaces . The Mouquin House, Sparkill, NY
Charles and PJ Mouquin, owners. Recipients of a County Executive Historic Preservation Merit Award in 2003. Photo Credit: Grant Scully
An essay about the house and its owners, The Mouquins, was published in the summer 2003 issue of our quarterly history journal “South of the Mountains”:
Tall and stately, the Mouquin House presides over the hillside on Rockland Road in Sparkill. The house as it exists today, was built by John Ferdon and has been cared for since the beginning of this century by the Mouquin family.
In 1850, John Ferdon bought a stone farmhouse that was built around 1800. It was just up the hill from the Greek Revival mansion that belonged to his father, William Ferdon. He remodeled the original building, which survives in the core of the present house, to its current Second Empire style with a mansard roof, employing the Englewood, New Jersey firm of Van Brunt to do the work, which was completed by 1873.
Charles Mouquin and his wife, PJ, tell of how Charles’s grandfather came to buy the property. Henri Mouquin and his wife, Jeanne Louise, used to admire the house from the train as they passed by it on their way to New York City. When they learned that it had been vacant since John Ferdon’s death in 1884, they purchased the house, barn and extensive acreage in 1902 for $2500. The house had fallen into such disrepair that Madame Mouquin recalled ice so thick on the kitchen floor in the basement that she could have skated on it. The Mouquins moved the kitchen up to the first floor, installed central heating, electricity and upgraded the plumbing.
One hundred years later, the house was in need of a roof restoration. The Mouquins engaged Al Turk & Son, who, using old photographs, uncovered the round windows, installed copper ridge rolls, restored the original cast iron roof cresting found in the barn and copied the original shingle pattern. This has been the latest and most important work in the Mouquins’s commitment to maintain the integrity of the masterpiece that is their home.
Over the years Charles and PJ Mouquin have embraced the ongoing challenge of maintaining the elaborate interior and exterior woodwork and plasterwork of their house. Craftsman Bedcy LaForest has helped them to master the intricacies of this job as well as to restore stone walls outside.
The summers that Charles spent as a child, staying with his grandmother, made a deep impression on him and her spirit remains in the front parlor, where she read aloud to her little grandson. Charles now uses this room as his office.
The HSRC salutes the Mouquins’ accomplishment in preserving an important part of Rockland history and their family heritage.
