I hate him. He ruined my life. Because of him my brain has suffered irreversible damage. It's such a relief that he dies in the end.

honestly The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) is one of the greatest examples of sci fi for me ever.
it didn't just *have* the human element, it was the human element. The point of the film is humanity.
and although primitive compared to today, it understood that to be sci-fi is to consider the reality of things rather than the bias of the times. Don't think I didn't notice that in 'the collection of greatest minds from around the world' there were black men and women. there were people in hijabs.
don't think I didn't hear the Mexican accent in Tom's secretary. I did. And I noticed how, though her screentime was brief, she was never talked down to and was never stupid.
And how ultimately, the day is saved by a woman. The one person who remained calm and reasonable even though her world was crumbling around her. a woman who is afraid, not because she is a woman but because she is human. And I saw her swallow down her fear and do what had to be done. And I saw no pomp and circumstance made around her gender. She was brave and reasonable because she was a human who knew how to love and how to listen.
And I saw, most of all, this movie claim that no country is greater than another, and that the petty squabbles of their leaders which lead to so much death and hatred do not represent what lives in the hearts of the common man. We cannot allow hatred and violence to spread.
What a movie. What a movie.
