A Step towards Sustainable Farming: Sustainable Guar Project
Ashland and the S M Sehgal Foundation are solving complex challenges in India and have begun a sustainable farming and education pilot project aimed at the improved productivity of guar, wheat, and mustard crops through the promotion of better agronomic practices and conservation of water through efficient irrigation practices. The program intends to transform 10 villages of Padampur and the Karanpur block of the Sriganganagar district in Rajasthan. Educational demonstrations and sustainable agriculture training for both men and women have been included. The farmer’s adoption of better agronomic practices during the pilot has proven to decrease the cost of cultivation and increase crop productivity, thereby enhancing the income of farming families in these villages. The program also furthers the empowerment of women in the region by building their capacities on improved agricultural practices and new farm technologies that increase crop yields, conserve water, improve soil fertility; the project also works towards improving the learning environment for schoolchildren and providing access to drinking water and better sanitation facilities. According to how my latest posts are going, I probably should have kept a Rapti River photo but this taal/ghol named Chemangala taal made more impact for me this time. This taal is nearby the old Padampur village inside the National Park. The village was transported to a new place in 2002/2003, now known as New Padampur. While the wildlife conservation history is strong and commendable in Chitwan, the struggle of Tharu communities are real. Guideji tells me stories of how as the community no longer are allowed to forage from the forest to even build their homes, they are now falling into the trap of tin, concrete and loans from bank.
