a pixian drabble? cottage core? pretty please?
anything for you pookie 😍😍 (and also anything for #pixianrevolution2023 ;D) we recently had the first snow here, so i went with some wintery vibes! word count: 801 words pairing(s): pixlriffs/grian warnings: none general tags & vibes: domestic fluff, winter, cottagecore
With the days growing shorter and the nights colder, winter was fast approaching. Grian readjusted his scarf over his nose and mouth, long dead leaves crunching under his boots as he walked. He came to a stop at the woodshed, admiring the piles of firewood stacked high from floor to ceiling. With a cold winter incoming, his and Pix’s work from over the summer should surely pay off to keep them warm in the coming months.
For the first time that season, Grian pulled on his leather work gloves and began to stack firewood into the wheelbarrow, piling it high before setting back in the direction of the cottage. As his scarf slipped below his mouth, he watched as an exhale of his warm breath billowed into the frosty air.
It really is that time of year, he thought.
Grian finally parked the wheelbarrow outside the back door to the cottage, then collected as much of an arm load as he could carry before heading back inside.
Warmer air and the smell of simmering root vegetables greeted him as he made his way inside. He hadn’t realized how dark it was becoming outside until the warm light from the kitchen spilled onto the front porch. He paused to wipe his boots on the doormat, kicking them off and leaving them by the door. “I’m back, Pix!” he called as he headed into the living room.
The sound of running water from the kitchen came to a stop, followed by some shuffling as Pix appeared in the doorway to the living room. “Welcome back,” he said.
Grian smiled as he set the pile of firewood into the hearthside log holder, then stood back up to go give his partner a kiss.
Pix hummed, smiling into the kiss as he pulled away after a moment. “You’re freezing.”
“It’s cold out!”
Pix reached down, taking Grian’s hands to ease his gloves off, laying them down over the back of the nearby sofa. He brought one of Grian’s hands up to his own, kissing the backs of his knuckles. “Good thing we’ll have a fire tonight. And a good warm meal, dinner’s almost done.”
“You’re spoiling me, Pix.” Grian leaned up to press another kiss to Pix’s cheek, before taking his jacket and scarf off and returning to the hearth. “I’ll go ahead and get this started. Do you mind grabbing me the matches?”
“You mean these?” Pix pulled the matchbox out of his pocket, giving it a shake before tossing it over to Grian.”
Grian’s smile widened as he caught the matches from him. “You always are thinking ahead, huh?”
Pix just shrugged. “Dinner in here tonight?” He asked.
“Sounds perfect.”
With that, he returned to the kitchen to finish preparing dinner.
Still smiling, Grian shook his head. He set the matches down on the hearth, before retrieving a large basket of fire starter and kindling wood from the mantle. He arranged dried pine needles and small sticks into a careful teepee, striking a match to set the structure alight. He then piled on a couple logs, brushing off his hands and putting the kindling basket back up on the mantle. Once the fire was steadily ablaze, he took to putting away his outerwear and tidying the living room up for dinner.
Once dinner was ready, Pix brought everything into the living room on a tray as promised. He laid out two steaming bowls of stew and two cups of tea, then took a seat on one of the cushions laid on the floor. “Nice fire,” he commented.
“Nice dinner,” Grian complimented in return, sitting down across from him.
Pix smiled. “I feel like winter came so much sooner than last year.” He nodded vaguely towards the window, the view outside nearly pitch black.
“I know,” Grian agreed. “I mean, this feels more like January than November, right?”
“Yeah,” Pix agreed. “I’m not mad about it though, we worked hard all summer and we’ve got more than enough to last us comfortably through winter.”
“Speaking of which, is this from the peppermint we dried last month?” Grian took a sip of the tea Pix had brought out for him.
“It is. I haven’t tried it yet, is it any good?”
“The best I’ve ever had.”
Pix took a sip of his and then nodded. “I think you’re right.”
Grian settled in, sitting cross legged as he unfolded his napkin. “Honestly, there’s something so cozy about all this,” he said after a moment, “I love the summer, but there’s just something about this time of year.”
“There really is,” Pix agreed. “Especially spending it with you, I’ve got nothing to complain about.”
Grian smiled and took his hand from across the table. “I think we’re in for another good year, Pix.”
“I think so too, Grian.”

Pixlriffs/Grian Headcanons Pt. 1
Grian’s Love Language: Quality Time
grian has been bringing pix on cute dates since before they even started dating
grian realized he’d properly fallen properly in love when pix took him on a spontaneous stargazing date
sometimes the two of them just go for little walks together with no preset destination
they enjoyed lots of walks together around each others’ worlds during the crossover
^^ thats so gay old married couple of them btw
anyways, i think grian also likes to have pix around when they aren’t doing anything specifically together too
pix will just hang around while grian is building sometimes and grian loves the company
grian also comes up with every excuse imaginable to get pix to stay the night when they’re together (it almost always works)
of course, grian also comes up with excuses to get him not to leave in the morning (it sometimes works)
the two of them make a point of always spending their anniversaries doing something special together

This is a part of the fairy (and mermaid) au I referenced back with this art. Although Bdubs had more traditional wings, Pix, along other Empires S2 and Hermits have feathered fairy wings. And then there are a few, like Grian, who are mermiads. (With the ability to switch to legs for gripper conviencience)
Pixian is such an underrated ship and I'm here to start a damn revolution to help more people be aware and appreciate them!

Tantan men
Tumblr media
Yesterday I made Tan Tan Men. It is a soupy Japanese version of Dan Dan Noodles. I did not follow a particular recipe, I used an amalgam of the best parts of different recipes I found. This recipe can be made vegan. I documented how I made it below.
Tumblr media
Monday, I made scallion oil. I had some frozen bacon grease that I finally decided to use. In hindsight, I should have used a neutral oil like soy. Many recipes recommend peanut, canola, & rapeseed. I will use soy next time for how neutral it is. This is the only non-vegan ingredient
Tumblr media
I wanted to make a simple scallion oil. What I used this time was 1.5 litres of oil, 12 bundles of scallions, 5 ripe Korean Chilli Peppers (I added 2 after the picture, I prefer the flavour of ripe Korean Chilli Peppers), 3 bay leaves, 1 clove, 1.5 star anise, 1 small to medium sized stick of cinnamon, ginger to taste. All of this can be adjusted to taste.
Cut the scallion greens into 4 cm pieces. The white part of the scallion needs to be cut similarly but also into 1/2 or 1/3 (lengthwise) depending on how thick it is. 1/2 the peppers, & slice the ginger into 3 mm slices. Warm up the oil to a low temp & slowly cook everything.
Tumblr media
Here is a good video for reference.
Tumblr media
While the scallion oil was slowly simmering away I started the broth by soaking shitake mushrooms and kombu overnight.
Tumblr media
Going back to the scallion oil, after occasionally stirring, the scallions became carmelised. I strained everything out and the oil was a beautiful dark amber colour. I fished out the aromatics and kept the scallions for a topping.
Tumblr media
Yesterday, I very lightly simmered the broth, I took out the shiitake and kombu, then added soymilk. I prefer the kind that only has soy and water as ingredients.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some recipes do not add soy milk. I like it because it makes the colour close to a tonkatsu ramen broth. It also makes the texture & flavours smoother.
Tumblr media
I left the soup on low just below the simmering point. This broth cannot be allowed to boil. This is a good reference video.
I rough chopped the shiitake mushrooms to make an alternative to a niku-miso topping.
Tumblr media
I pan-fried the chopped mushrooms in an oiled pan to get out any remaining water. (I had previously squeezed them over the broth.) Then added a little Pixian Doubanjiang, white miso, & soy sauce.
Tumblr media
While the alternative niku-miso is cooking, it would be the perfect time to start boiling water for the noodles. After cooking the noodles you can reuse the water to blanch some bok choy. This is another overall reference video.
As the noodles cook, start preparing the tare & soup base. The previously linked video gives the soy sauce tare that I used. I also added tahini, scallion oil, & chilli oil. I used a store-bought chilli oil, but it can be made ahead like the scallion oil. Here is a video with a great recipe. My next project may be to follow this to make my own chilli oil.
In the serving bowl combine the tare base and the broth & stir everything together. Although it is not pictured I would also recommend Szechuan pepper and Ya Cai. Then you can add the noodles.
Tumblr media
After the noodles are added, you can add the toppings like the niku-miso, bok choy etc. If you would like it to be even spicier you can add shichimi togarashi. If you do not like Szechuan peppercorns, you can substitute Japanese Sansho. You can also substitute the Szechuan chilli oil with Japanese Rayu (chilli oil). I typically use a store-bought one made with toasted sesame oil. This is not meant to be a strict recipe, feel free to change whatever you want. Have fun exploring. Most important of all have fun. If it's overwhelming there is no shame in getting takeout.

i should make a mealplan so i know what to bring with me. i ordered some pixian douban from online lately, so i could make that nice stirfry i like, with green garlic, tofu, chili pepper and wood ear. ill also need my soy sauce, white pepper, stock, wine and ginger n garlic. thatll require my wok and my rice cooker as well as my knife and cutting board. altho maybe i could make do with just my cast iron??? then id be able to make that green bean and tofu stir fry too, id need my black vinegar and my gochujang. i could bring my new stainless steel and make a curry too, thatll mostly just take a few spices and some fresh veg, maybe dried chickpeas if i wanna go that route. i could also take some frozen stew to save myself a day of cooking. i wonder what my sisters friend has at her place? maybe i could save a few pounds and go there early to check what supplies she has in her kitchen.

Pixlriffs/Grian Headcanons Pt. 2
Pix’s Love Language: Words of Affirmation
grian gives the most genuine compliments and pix ADORES them, but is so easily flustered by the sincerity in grian’s declarations of love
so like without thinking, grian will just say something like “i’m in love with everything about you” and pix just short circuits lmao-
pix started crushing on grian when grian started casually complimenting things like his builds or his knowledge of specific subjects
pix realized he was IN LOVE with grian when grian started expressing how much he liked being around him
before they started dating, pix wrote a love letter to grian that he never intended to give him, but he ultimately gave it to him on their one year anniversary
he also writes little love notes for grian pretty regularly in their established relationship
when they’re apart, he also sends love letters to grian, but was absolutely FLOORED when grian first sent him one back
sometimes late at night, just before he’s asleep, pix will just murmur vague “i love you” ramblings to grian, who will often reciprocate them
^^ grian remembers these in the morning. pix doesn’t.
pix also tends to associate song lyrics with grian, and the two have a playlist that reminds them of their relationship
