When I saw this dress the first time, I audibly gasped. Tartan is something we misread as being modern--I joke that this one looks like it came off the latest Ralph Lauren runway. But in fact, this pattern is ancient. So ancient that we've found mummies with plaid clothing remnants on their bodies dating back 3,000 years.

In this case, we have satin to up the ante, and this gorgeous colorway. The pattern absolutely shimmers. I mean, look at that closeup!

And can we talk about the cut of this dress? It dates to 1860, but it is such a classic shape it would be at home in any century. There's boning in the bodice to provide extra support, but really the design leans on the pattern and fabric and a simple, lovely silhouette.
