I don't know, that part never seemed to be transphobic to me. They had reasons to be so, and when they made other decisions to be someone, I was glad. I don't know how you will consider it, though. Will you analyze it through and through, or will you just look at the surface? It is similar with Kanji's case. He doesn't necessarily have to be gay, but everyone always say he is, just based on his shadow, which are ridiculously exaggerated versions of the person's negative thoughts.

I couldn't reply to this before for obvious reasons, but now that I got through Naoto's dungeon: oh boy. It's pretty late here so idk how much sense this will make but here we go

The thing is, the concept of talking about the sexism in the police workforce isn't bad - it's a pretty good thing tbh, and I can see that they went further with the theme in p5 - like, yeah, address the sexism in workplaces and all that, but the problem is, they gave Naoto the trans subtext and then they ripped it off, just like they did with Kanji and his sexuality - and I think it's pretty hard to separate these two since their arcs pretty much follow the same basic, which is queer subtext > queer subtext now gone, they're back to the 'norm'

Let's go with Naoto first, because seriously, when you have a character linked to gender identity and "body alteration procedure" - come on. You know what they're referring to, and they immediately did an u-turn by having Naoto say that no, they've been a girl all along, despite all the subtext going on and uugghh. The thing about being themselves and no one else is beautiful and I love it, but taking into consideration what was said earlier, it just doesn't sit right. It's right, it's a good message but - it's not right at the same time, for the implications it seems to carry ( and you know the implications of fitting in the norm are there, because this is persona, and we can't have someone who isn't 100% straight unless it's p2 apparently.)

Same thing with Kanji - his dungeon is supposedly all about facing his inner thoughts and ideas about masculinity, but the subtext of Kanji's sexuality is literally all over the game AND it's not even subtext. He's been crushing on Naoto since he first saw the guy, when he was still presenting himself as a boy - might not make Kanji completely gay, but he's at least MLM coded, and not like. Other characters who have vague hints. This guy has been crushing over another guy for half of the game, but then oh, surprise? The guy isn't a guy. It's a girl. Technically, Kanji doesn't even have the mlm subtext anymore on paper (except he still does)

Hell if I didn't think the most awful shit about myself when I was questioning my sexuality, especially when you have grown up in a society telling you that if you deviate from a certain norm you're just broken and there's something deeply wrong with you. Which is why this whole writing thing is just bugging me a lot - because the way their shadows are talking to them, it feels like they're just kids trying to figure out themselves, just to have some homophobic deus ex machina take that away from them. The way they belittle their thoughts and rip to shreds the idea of what they could be resonated with me and it's. It's hard.

Also this is p transphobic but I would honestly give it a pass if it was a "kid growing up with internalized transphobia gives himself transphobic speeches"

It's all about putting it in the right context really, and the thing is, the game throws this stuff at you, then hides the hand behind its back and pretends nothing happened

- marie’s dungeon mechanic was actually really fun, i enjoyed it a lot!!! also i thought i fucked up something because I accidentally read the lines about the orb of truth in the spoilerfree ending guide while I was playing the boss fight, and idk why I thought it was something I NEEDED FOR THAT PART - and wouldn’t be able to save marie without it, so i was sad the entire time. turns out i’m just an idiot

- KANJI OH GOD KANJI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- i really like how rise’s crush is consistent in the entire game, it actually feels natural rather than just thrown in because. game romance, you can have every girl. ykno?

- the fact that you have one last dungeon to do in ONE sitting put a lot of pressure on me even if i one shot almost all the dungeons in this game

-it’s called a gay awakening yosuke and i’m sorry they didnt let you have it

- speaking of which

- persona protagonists be like, i’ll beat up a god today ( the design for the second part of the fight was SO good, I love a good creepy skeleton-like boss)

- the ‘friends give me strenght’ moment and the GET FUCKED BY THIS SPECIAL SKILL OF MY PERSONA moment *chef kiss* LIKE!!!!!!!!! I CAN’T EVEN EXPRESS HOW MUCH THOSE MOMENTS HYPE ME UP!!! THE FACT THAT YOUR PARTY MEMBERS SACRIFICE THEMSELVES BEFORE YOU GET TAKEN BY THE ATTACK!! FUCK!!!!!!!!

- please atlus let the protagonist show more emotion than just default smile, everyone was crying when he was leaving, let him show some EMOTION, you want me to believe he didn’t make a sad face??? not even ONCE??? YOU WANT ME TO BELIEVE HE DIDN’T HAVE EMOTIONS ON HIS FACE WHEN NANAKO DID THIS???

- ngl i was pretty close to crying my eyes out when they showed the picture they all took together anD THEN THERE’S THE SCENE WHERE HE COMES BACK AND THEY SURPRISE HIM AND EVERYONE LOOKS DIFFERENT AND CHIE!!!!!!!!! CHIE!!!!!!!!! AND KANJI????????? marie as  the weather report girLHHHHHHHHHHHFUCDHFHDSNJF i do not look at naoto <3 i do not see it, but i see chie!!!!! i love what i see!!!

final impression is, really fun game, as always there’s some writing stuff that makes me ehegfhf, more in this game than p5 because in this one they actually. had good setups for lgbtq characters, but :^) fuck; still, enjoyed it and got attached to the characters, which is what’s important to me

SOPHIE'S AWAKENING WAS SO GOOD!!!! AIs/ROBOTS THAT GO AGAINST THEIR PROGRAMMING TO SAVE THEIR FRIENDS ARE SO GOOD!!!! THE VOICE ACTING WAS SO GOOD!!!! THE WHOLE SCENE GAVE ME CHILLS, the awakenings in this game are 👌👌👌👌

Also I love that her persona is Pandora and her element is light, it's so fitting 😳 not a big fan of her design tho, I think they could've gone a bit more abstract with it? Idk, Pandora being inside the box and the box head are cool, but I think they could've gone a bit more apeshit or make her body more detailed and not just,,, naked with black censor stripes lmao,, since her arms resemble doll arms, I would've just made her look like a mannequin? Mh

ALSO THE PART WHERE. WHERE RYUJI AND ANN GET KNOCKED BACK AND WHEN THEY STAND UP AGAIN RYUJI IS PUTTING UP HIS ARM TO KEEP ANN BEHIND HIM AND PROTECT HER.

finished the boss fight today and i’m kinda falling asleep so it’s a quick recap

- ok so re-evaluated adachi a bit while i was playing, I think I was putting him way too much in comparison to goro when the twist happened (yeah i did read the comments under the last post just now dw)

- really liked his villain monologue tbh that was good

- and to get to her i had to go to the hospital, and yeah i can see a faint hint of smth interesting with the nurse’s background but man was it really necessary to have her be LIKE THAT- anyways. still not my priority but i’ll see how it goes.
