If Zutara shippers ever try to tell you Zuko showed more interest in and would make a better couple than Katara than with Mai because of opposites attract and parallels,remind them that:

Ty Lee is a bubbly pink girl who's very overtly and shamelessly weird and silly,believes in optimism deeply and has a power based in painless nullifying

Has sibling based insecurities and trauma

Is very grafeul and good at making friends

Grew up with Azula and resents her for her 'perfection' but Ty Lee pretends to love it and genuinely does like things about her while Zuko is vocal about how much he hates her

She actually tried to flirt with Zuko with the classic 'I'm freezing!' to get him to put his arms around her and he looked at her with baby dragon eyes while saying 'I can make a fire' in softest goddamn voice ever

His idea of insulting her was to call her 'so pretty' and point out she can walk on her hands

On the same day,he also tried to give Mai a seashell because he thought she'd like it but she didn't and it cuts right to Ty Lee saying she loves it and using the exact word Zuko did as to why he assumed Mai would('pretty')

ALSO on the same day,they both got cornered into a pressuring question they didn't know the awnser to for emotional reasons and frantically said so before lashing out their powers in self-defense

And that these scenes exist

This is the time he ever sees Ty Lee interact with another guy onscreen and he immediately got pissed when they said they were inviting her to a party but not him.'I just realized she be looking at other guys y'all i can't breath' ass lmfao(Also not canon but you can't tell me Ty Lee isn't Air Nomad mixed and a sweet tooth to Zuko's spice addict c'mon)

The lack of self-awareness game in Zutara shippers is crazy as shit,Katara and Zuko were obsessed with Aang the whole show while thinking the other was the biggest loser in existense and Katara said 1613948 times she hates having to act like a mom and wants to be a real kid and rizzed up Aang like almost every episode starting from The Boy In The Iceberg and Zuko's redemption arc only worked because he was actually willing to unpack his baggage and improve as a person and rid himself of his bigoted ways and selfish treatment of others because he didn't deserve to be babied after all he did to the Gaang and it's hammered into our heads in-text and so's that Aang and him are platonic cosmic soulmates by choice against the universe trying to keep them apart and Katara is Litte Miss Punk Tactics(reclaiming femininity against traditionalism and cisheteronormatovity and fucking eco-terrorism at 14 as her lifestyles??????Damn okay slay babygirl)and YET,

Okay i can't even list off everything Zutaras gentrify in the fandom because the list is longer than Iroh's beard but i will say that Katara ending up with Zuko is about as dark richer storytelling than Kataang + Dadko as telling Bob The Builder 'No we can't',about as feminist as Rick Riordan and about as positive rep for woc as The Hunchback of Notre Dame

The Atla fandom is a really good example of how persecuted people who fight back vs their oppressors are treated.Aang lived a happy peaceful life with other tibetan monks-nomads until the Fire Nation saw them as a 'threat' for no actual reason so the Air Nomad genocide happened and after being unfrozen,Aang had to face the harsh reality of the whole world and did a lot of good for it by doing tons of damage to the FN and other corrupted groups and gave tons of kindness to those he was trying to protect and save from them out of the goodness of his heart but he has a belief from his culture that's not inherently bad but goes against western ones and he said a few bad things out of non-malicious ignorance and his young age so he's branded a bigot,an 'apologist' and even a fascist

Zuko's the son of an imperialist king that gave him every privilege under the stars bar his love and taught him legitemate toxic masculinity and racist ideologies that he weaponized in his search of Avatar which in of itself is an act of racial violence because it was a hunt to down a survivor of etchnic cleansing BECAUSE of their heritage to kill them and even after Zuko's redemption arc,he still dosen't let go of his bigotry and dosen't try to or even get called out on it!Suki and Sokka LAUGHED at him mocking Aang's dead people and Aang didn't even get mad at him for his significant amount of other anti-Air Nomad jokes and in a meta sense,he's treated better by the narrative than Azula because he's male.There are zero redeemed female villains and he never got oversexualized like she did and you cannot remove her japanese/east asian-coding and her gender in this context considering what irl underaged easian girls are seen like and treated as

Zuko did damage and he did make up for it too but only to the Gaang and Aang never did any damage to begin with,he was entierly Zuko's victim pre-season 3 and a victim of his people as a whole.But 'Zuko was never truly evil' because it was how he was raised and AANG is worse than him by virtue of not being conventionally attractive and openly nice instead of a brooding emotionally constipated dickbag with anger issues and unrestrained violent tendencies.The Fire Nation are the REAL good guys and the Air Nomads had it coming because they were different

A big reason why i hate Zutaras is that you see,i'm a multishipper yeah?So i have no problem with noncanon ships.I think they're super fun and interesting actually!But the problem is Zutaras are always stealing the dynamics of other noncanon ships and passing it off as their own's. Katara isn't the water tribe character that's close friends with Zuko to the point where you'd think they're a bickering couple instead,that's Sokka.Zuko isn't the cool slightly older bad boy that Katara immediately had a huge crush on and who she bonded over being hurt by the Fire Nation's colonization's with,that's Jet.Katara isn't the soft uwu ray of sunshine pastel girl who's also a huge badass that Zuko had a wasted potetional romantic dynamic with,that's Ty Lee.Zuko isn't the black haired rich kid that Katara butted heads with at first over their opposite personalities but quickly became loving but vitriolic besties with,that's Toph.And i wouldn't be surprised if there are even more examples than the ones i listed.Like can't they just ship things that have those relathionships *in canon* instead of acting like obvious two found siblings who never showed interest in eachother that way not being eachother's twu wuv is oppression or whatever(Sadly:The awnser it no)

Y'know what?Yes,actually,i DO think nobody should be allowed to ship Zutara.Not because 'You can only ship canon' purity bullshit but because it sanitizes the show in general but especially Katara.Katara is not just a teenage girl,she's a brownskin native one who's strongest and most prevelant trait's are hating oppressors with all her heart and taking action in it throught all of canon.This 100% includes Zuko pre-redemption and she is under no obligation to have a crush on him even post it because their friendship is good enough of a status for both of them-This is their canon feelings on the matter.Zuko in canon is too focused on Mai to pursue anyone else and the only other girl he showed potential interest in is Ty Lee and Sokka is an infinitely more in-character Gaang love interest option for him than she is and Katara fullstop never even considered Zuko a romantic option.And why should she have?He spent almost a year trying to kill her first ever friend and wasn't afraid to hurt her too to accomplish it,the first time she saw good in him and opened up to him about her trauma that HIS DIRECT ANCESTORS caused he betrayed her and his initial attempts to make it up to her directly were half assed as hell so he resorted to trying to get her to murder someone at 14.Zuko is a good person but that dosen't mean he's good enough for Katara and she's well-aware of that since she's full of self-worth and vocalizes it as she should

This wasn't just a relathionship dynamic choice-It was representation to show minorities how they should treat their oppressors and that is to not coddle them because they were raised to hate and hurt them for existing and to say none of them are entitled to forgiveness due to being raised into it since kids of color don't have the privilige of getting away with things for having the 'right' heritage.Zuko is a victim because his dad was abusive,not because his dad was an imperialist.Katara is a proud girl of color-not woc,she's a GIRL,a FEMALE CHILD-who's canonically an activist and instigator starting at the age of 14 while still behaving like an ordinary (feminine) teenage girl instead of an adult in a kid's body and her friends talk onscreen multiple times about how she deserves to act her age.By choosing Zuko over Aang,Katara would've given up her beliefs and wish to destroy gender roles and turned into what the racist patriarchy both in-universe and irl wants her to be
