The thing is that, while I was angry at Tony during Age of Ultron, particularly when he rode over Bruce’s compunctions about building a giant combat super-robot and pressured him into the project like a very very bad friend who happened to also be wrong...

...and when he equipped Hulkbuster armor and fought the Hulk in the middle of a city rather than attempting de-escalation or attempting to haul the Hulk out into the giant adjacent desert....

(And my suspension of disbelief snapped like a frayed cable when he brought down a skyscraper that had had no time to be evacuated on a street full of fleeing people and the only reason we were given to believe he hadn’t just cold-bloodedly created massive civilian casualties was that he told his AI to find the impossible magic angle where doing this wouldn’t kill anyone...)

While I was angry with him then, and unspeakably relieved that he recognized his own damage and retired at the end, haha psych, I was revolted by him during Civil War.

It’s supposed to make us sympathize with a character more, spending so much time with them, getting into their heads, being shown their emotional drives and reactions to things, and we spent so much time with Tony during that film, understanding his point of view. And...I did understand him. He’s not complicated. I even sympathized with his emotional state.

But in the context of his actions, throughout the film, I gazed into that understanding the way I did into Kylo Ren’s face in the seconds after he first unmasked. I see you, I know you, everything you are is written here, and the lines of your shame and self-revulsion are so thick upon you, and you should be ashamed but your self-destruction does not expiate or justify one jot of the harm you do.

Because everything Tony did in Civil War came from a place of selfishness. He was selfish all throughout that movie down to his very spine.

And selfishness isn’t itself necessarily bad--you need a little, to get through life, you have the right to your own portion of it. Your boundaries and your needs. But the type of selfishness that is forcing other people pay dearly for your emotional comfort and sense of control: no.

That is tyranny. That is not acceptable.

And you know how I know he was being selfish? Because his motive for pushing the Sokovia Accords was his personal guilt for the destruction of Sokovia.

But the Accords didn’t address that at all! They were tangential to the issue! None of the terms of the Accords would have saved Sokovia--in fact, the existence of them could easily have prevented the evacuation and harm-reduction the Avengers managed there, without saving a single soul.

The Ultron crisis was something Tony did, not as Iron Man but as Tony Stark, with Bruce Banner’s help, and which Wanda as criminal fugitive later helped exacerbate, and which all the other Avengers were involved in only to mitigate harm.

Legislation, or...treaties, idk, the UN isn’t actually empowered to pass laws so who knows what this thing was...aimed at preventing another Sokovia would mandate constant ethical oversight of billionaire science man’s mad science. At the very least! He never has to run things by ethics boards because he’s self-funded, at the very least let’s invent a mechanism to make up for that.

That would address the actual Sokovia issue, both in terms of risks and in terms of Tony’s personal guilt feelings.

But no one suggests that! It’s not even on the table! Because no one, certainly not any government, can tell Tony Stark what to do unless he lets them, that’s been a clear matter of record since Iron Man 2.

And because no one writing this legal instrument of whatever description was actually motivated by wanting to avoid another Sokovia, or even another ‘Wanda tries to neutralize a suicide bomber but merely gives him a different, smaller victim pool’ incident.

They didn’t care! They blatantly didn’t care! The entire thing was a ghoulish use of the dead to gain enough political leverage over the Avengers to put a leash on them!

(Which might not be a bad thing in principle, everything needs its checks, but when the last quasi-governmental organization you worked for turned out to be Nazis who were only prevented from staging a mass slaughter of undesireables by the skin of your teeth, I think you’re well within your rights to be very choosy about who you agree to obey, and to be firmly against pledging your honor to follow people whose first move was dishonest coercive tactics.

Actually you’re well within your rights to demand to negotiate the terms of even a much less sweeping contract, even without the Nazis. The whole approach to this thing stank to high heaven.

The fact that it was written by the UN like a treaty, expected to be signed by private individuals like a contract, and then enforced like a law except not because 1) laws are for everyone 2) if you break a law you get a trial not extrajudicial incarceration and 3) being pressured to consent to a restriction and then punished for refusing consent is hypocritical circular logic and in fact police corruption at its finest, all continues to show it was a bullshit nonsense franken-document.)

The whole movie is people ghoulishly using the dead to manipulate Tony into making bad decisions in response to his emotional pain. That’s. The plot of the film.

Then Zemo staged T’Chaka’s assassination and framed Bucky for it to raise the tension, ramp up the pressure, and prevent any sitting-down and talking reasonably through this, which might have allowed for the recognition of how extremely bullshit the entire concept was.

Tony was being used. Tony was a tool of bad people for most of that movie, and while Zemo banked on using his wrath for it, the politicos were leaning on his guilt.

And there’s honestly little I hold in deeper scorn than going out and hurting other people to assuage your own guilt and treating this as having the moral high ground. No. You don’t have the moral high ground on account of your guilt motivation. You have it if the actions you took were just, or at least could reasonably be assumed to have been so at the time.

And Tony fucking knew they weren’t. He didn’t even last to the end of the movie before recognizing that he’d been manipulated and fucked up, and doubling back.

That he then walked into a different manipulation, turned on a dime, and had to be stopped from doing a murder doesn’t unwrite that.

And it drives me nuts that people will say Tony was acting out of principle while Steve was acting out of personal attachment. Because sure, the Bucky thing was important, was the reason he was walking forward against all opposition instead of standing still to argue, but it wasn’t the reason Steve said no, while...

Tony wasn’t acting out of principle. Tony isn’t...very good at having principles. That’s not even a criticism or condemnation, it’s just how he functions. Since Iron Man he’s been substituting good intentions and emotional investment, which has worked out to varying degrees. It works best for huge, difficult, very straightforward decisions like ‘ride the nuke through the portal and save my hometown.’ It works less well for nuanced situations.

Tony was, as usual, acting out of emotion. And some awful shitheads who’d figured out where his levers were had calculated how to jiggle his emotion switches in the right places to make him do exactly what they wanted.

And you can tell he wasn’t acting out of principle because, for example, someone who was trying to get the superhero community under outside control for the sake of harm mitigation...

...well, firstly wouldn’t have chosen to stage a massive battle? But it’s possible someone in the UN specifically told him to do that, and in theory they at the very least signed off on it, presumably for its PR value of making Captain America look deranged and violent since it’s a deranged decision from every other angle, so yay, he can pass that responsibility up the chain and not have to angst about it, as promised.

But I was going to say would not have approached a minor who (this timeline takes pains to show us) had no prior experience of battle or even, somehow, serious violent crime, to recruit him to go be a government child soldier on another continent, without his guardian’s knowledge or consent. There were overtones of blackmail in Tony’s approach, before it turned out Peter was such a big fan he didn’t need that. What the fuck frankly.

That is not the action of someone who wants to start doing things by the letter, scaling the violence down, keeping within the law and putting the power of decisionmaking in other people’s hands because he’s realized he can’t trust his own.

And frankly even if he did act like that I wouldn’t necessarily support his choices, in particular his snap decision to behave coercively toward other Avengers with vastly less social power and security than he has.

And that’s the other thing! Everything about ‘Tony + Accords BFFs’ rings so hollow because he has never thought rules applied to him, and he knows perfectly well the entire time he’s fighting to force this surrender of agency down other people’s throats that he is going to be practically immune.

This man was technically a terrorist, proabably the most prolific single terrorist in world history until his rogue android exceeded his body count, but he was immune to prosecution because he was in tight with the United States military-industrial complex and basically untouchable due to his status within capitalism, and pursuing their international goals anyway. In the time between Iron Man and Iron Man II he was basically a one-man upgrade of the US drone program, and so good at it that the crest of blood he carved through the Middle East allowed him to announce he had ‘privatized world peace.’

(You are never going to get a world peace worth anything on the basis of a giant flying gun, okay.)

He went to war as a private individual, against non-state actors who were not directly threatening him, which is very much defined as ‘mass murder’ in all domestic and international law, and the US army in response sued him for control of his weapon. And lost! Lost.

No one attempted to press charges. No one. Because Tony Stark is above all that. And he knows it.

And like. I’m willing to accept the mass murder under the heading of ‘superheroing’ within the terms of this setting! Even if, after his vengeance rampage on his specific kidnappers, this violence was kept strictly off-screen for a reason. I did that! I bent that far! Genre convention!

But this history is kind of vitally important to any analysis of what he thought he was doing, and what he actually was doing, when he decided to become the iron gauntlet of the Sokovia Accords.

The currently active member of the Avengers who needed muzzling most was very manifestly Iron Man, and he knew even as he jammed the muzzle on all his comrades to make himself feel better that it would affect him the least, even if he didn’t finally retire for real this time. You don’t force Tony Stark. Not if you want anything out of it but blown up. You persuade him.

And once you have...oh, look at what he can do.

You’d be lying if you said you haven’t been wallowing in self pity since you arrived back in Toronto. Shawn and Connor have not left your mind; along with the last moment you saw them. The anger and then regret that flashed through their eyes broke your heart. It felt like you caused all of this drama because you couldn’t choose between one boy. 

Your life became one of those romantic dramas you constantly make fun of. Of course, your pity party wasn’t getting this situation out of your mind. Memories from tour played through your head like a movie.  

Tomorrow is the first show in America. Currently, the whole team and band was explore the city of Portland. Everyone completely jittery and ready for the show to come. Tour has already been amazing. 

“Oh, let’s go in here.” You grabbed his hand and lead him into the little shop. It was small but cozy and cute. It seemed to be a jewelry shop based on the displays up front but the further you walk, the more options you see. In the back, was an older lady sitting behind a large table with different colored beads and lose, empty bands. 

“Would you like to make your own bracelets?” The lady asked, gesturing to the empty bands. You quickly nodded before picking up two of the bands and handing him one. 

“You make mine and I’ll make yours?” You suggest, smiling widely. He knew he couldn’t say no. Not to that smile. You quickly got to work, picking out the beads you wanted. Deciding to go with a more manly vibe; you picked up black, blue and some green beads. Placing them in an easy pattern on the band, you stop and grab a small white bead that had Y/F/I on it. Then you take two beads that made up your initials, sliding them onto the band along with a bead that was your favorite color. Placing it in the middle of the other beads, you quickly finish up. 

“Here.” He said, grabbing your wrist and tying your new bracelet on. You smile as you see that he put his initials on the bracelet; just like you did. 

“I love it.” You say after tying his bracelet onto his wrist. The two of you shared a big smile, before paying the lady. He quickly but gently tugs you out of the little shop, and down the streets of Portland. The two of you carefree while you had the chance. 

You’re eyes never left the bracelet that was still tied around your wrist as you replayed that memory. You haven’t taken it off since he put it on. To you, it symbolized the connection shared between the two of you. 

Denver. You were almost positive that is the city you are currently in. After travelling endlessly, it’s hard to be completely sure on where you are at. Needless to say, the show was amazing as always. The crowd was breathtaking and gave off a great vibe. Now, everyone was on their assigned bus as the journey to the next city was about to start. 

You already showered and refreshed yourself. Now, everyone was lounging around the bus, relaxing. Soon, he came and joined you; away from everyone. The smell of this fresh shampoo hit your nose and made you smile at the familiar scent.

“Whatcha doing?” he asked, his face awfully close to yours. You motioned to your headphones. 

“Jamming.” You smile before offering him one of the buds. He immediately recognized the familiar, smooth voice of Hozier’s Almost (Sweet Music). He sighed as he leaned back, resting one hand across his stomach and the other on your leg, tapping to the beat.

He watched in awe as you softly sang along to the words. Your voice wasn’t perfect but the look of complete and utter content on your face made everything seem perfect in this moment. 

I wouldn't know where to start  

He doesn’t know where to start with you. He could write a whole book about just your laugh. The things you did to him without even realizing. Like right now. You had no idea the effect you had on him. The way he smiled without realizing it, just by seeing yours. Or how at the sight of you, his heart jumps out of his chest. Your laugh makes him laugh. How you are goofy to put him back into a good mood when he is feeling homesick. You had no idea that your soft singing was going to be the moment he realizes how strong his feelings for you are. 

“What?” You stopped singing as you noticed him staring you; not moving, not even blinking. You sat up straight and wipe your face. “Do I have something on my face?” You asked. He quickly shook his head; his slightly damp hair flying around. 

“No. No. You’re perfect.” He whispered and you almost didn’t hear him. He smiled as you looked down, bashfully, but the smile on your lips could be seen by anyone. 

Hozier’s voice filled your apartment as you tidy up a bit. It was time for you to stop sitting around all day. But no matter what you did, something brought up another memory of him. The bracelet, to your Spotify playlist, to your favorite TV show. All of your favorite things were connected with him. 

“I can’t believe I let you talk me into this.” He grumbled as the two of you huddled on his bed in the hotel you were staying in for the night. A lot of the band and crew went out to explore but the two of you were feeling lazy and decided to stay in and have a marathon. 

“You chose the last TV show. It’s my turn.” You said as you scrolled on your laptop, looking for the series. You glanced at him from the side of your eyes and had to suppress your smile as you saw him cuddling into your blanket. “Okay, shall we begin?” You retorchically ask because he really did not have a choice. 

“So, who’s is that guy again?” “What the fuck. The siblings are lovers? What is this shit?” “Awe its a puppy.” “Why do you like this show again?” Those were a few comments he made in the first half of the episode of Game of Thrones. As annoying as he was getting, his commentary was hilarious. 

“Just hush up and watch it. I promise you will like it once the show gets going.” You said, as your head tilted up from its position on his chest. You weren’t sure when or how the two of you ended up in this position but you weren't complaining. He was warm and a great snuggle buddy. 

He wouldn’t admit it but you were right. Once he shut up and watched the show, he got really into it. So much that he watched the first 5 episodes in one sitting. 

“Alright, so it’s pretty good-” He stopped talking once he noticed you were fast asleep. You’re cheek was pressed up against his chest and your arm was wrapped around his waist; a light death grip on it. But he wasn’t complaining. You looked adorable with your mouth slightly parted and little, soft snores coming out. It made it even better that you were wearing on of his hoodies. This easily became his favorite moment between the two of you. Which is why he decided to snap a quick picture of you on his chest before shifting slightly and falling asleep next to you. He swears it was the best sleep he’s had all tour. 

Your hands softly traced over the hoodie you found in your suitcase. It seemed like a good idea to finally unpack the bag that has been sitting by the door for the past week and a half. You didn’t even realize that you took this piece of clothing with you. The all too familiar cologne hit your nose as you held the navy blue hoodie up to your chest. It didn’t hit you how much you missed him until you realized his comforting smell was almost gone from this hoodie. It made you more eager to slip it over you head and cuddle into it; wishing it was his arms instead. But you’d have to settle for the oversized hoodie. 

For now.

TM2 RANT

               TM2 RANT            

Hi guys! I know its been a very long time since I’ve posted any TM or TM2 recaps or rants but I’ve decided to start again because who doesn’t love hearing my judgmental opinion on a bunch of people none of know personally!? That being said, also know this: I’m well aware this show was filmed last year and I’m also aware that these opinions are based off of what we see on the show/IG/twitter ect. None of us know Leah, Chelsea, Jenelle or Kailyn in real life (although if you’ve watched the show since day one, we might feel like we do) so our opinions and things we say really are invalid. However, these people put their lives on television so in that case, they are putting themselves out there for judgement. (some more than others…) so here we go!

Watching Jenelle constantly disrespect her mother is sometimes painful.  Bab’s isn’t perfect but she deserves some respect. She is raising Jenelle’s child, which in my opinion, no grandparent should have to do. I give credit where it’s due and I think we can all agree Jenelle has come a long way and as far as we all know, she is no longer using but that doesn't change her mean spirited personality. Also, I think Nathan knows something we don’t and I’m staring to think that David might be a very controlling, angry person. He does show some signs of an abuser BUT I will not go as far as to call him one because as I stated above, none of us know what really goes on. The fact that these two have multiple baby mommas and daddies is a huge mess but I guess there are worse things in the world. Do I personally find it kinda nasty/irresponsible? Absolutely. Maybe she was embarrassed and that’s why she was trying to hide it. But either way, whats done is done. (Super done now because didn’t she just squeeze this baby out like last week?) Now on another note, someone needs to teach Jace some fucking table manners. He is beyond old enough to know how to eat like a human being. While I was grossed out by the scene in question, I was still paying attention. This little boy knows wayyy too much about the legal problems between Jenelle and Babs and they are both at fault here. Jenelle bad mouths Babs all the time right in front of Jace and we hear Babs say things like “Mommy and David don’t want me around.” I am 100% sure this confuses the shit out of the poor kid and you can always, always tell he would rather be with Barbara, which only makes sense because he has lived with his grandmother his whole life. That is the home he knows. Jenelle needs to understand that removing Jace from his environment now will proabably result in some mental trauma/confusion/behavioral problems and I think that a judge would feel the same way. Jenelle has turned her life around, we can all see how well she is doing but that doesn't excuse how selfish she was for the first seven years of Jace’s life. She will eventually have to find a way to make that up to him and popping out 93023954 more kids and trying to make him live like nothing bad ever happened is not it. I think Chelsea and Cole have absolutely made the right decision about putting off the wedding. Planning for a baby and a wedding at the same time sounds like some very stressful hell and I totally get what she means about wanting to pictures to look a certain way. I know for me personally, I’d wanna be at my smallest for my wedding so having a big ol baby belly probably isn’t her idea of perfection either. Aubree is adorable and Cole is great. I really never have anything bad to say about Chelsea (though I’m sure she’s not perfect and has her own issues)  From what we are shown, things look great. All that being said, can someone please punch Adam in his dumb fucking face? He is a loser with nothing to show for anything except having a nice body. That’s literally it. Hes a complete douche sandwich with the personality of a stiff sock and his girlfriend looks like a huge bitch. Adam acts like MTV owes him something when they definitely don’t. I have never seen him doing or saying anything nice since Chelsea’s episode of 16 and pregnant. He acts as if the viewers would give a shit if he stopped filming and I think most people would agree with me that seeing less of Adam would not break our hearts in the least. How dare he bitch and moan about 900 dollars in child support when that’s literally all he does for Aubree is pay for material shit? That’s great and helpful, but it’s not being a dad. Leah is boring me this season, not gonna lie. But the girls seem much better behaved now that she has her life straightened out. (I wish she would clean her fucking car though...) But good for her, she seems to be okay for the most part. I think Cory is a great dad but I think he maybe be in a little bit of denial about Ali’s condition. Should he have faith in her and in her doing things on her own? Absolutely 100% but he should also probably be prepared for what could happen. However, everyone deals with that kind of situation differently and I think for now this is his defense mechanism. As far as uprooting the girls from their classmates, I’m on Cory’s side and I’m glad he held his ground so the girls wouldn't have to go to a whole new school with kids they don’t know. But props to Leah for not starting a fight over it. Seriously, she’s come a long way. I have no doubt that if that would have been up for debate a few years ago, Leah would have been a big crying, screaming mess over not getting her way. I am so rooting for her and for this family. I really think they’re great people and they, to me, are the most relatable out of the series. FUCKING Kailyn....what in the name of all that is holy has happened to this girl? I remember watching Kail’s episode of 16 and pregnant and feeling awful for her. Her mom was (is?) a horrible bitch who should have been there for her the whole time. Jo was acting like a total dick at the time, which, now, looking back I kind of get. He was a sixteen year old boy with a kid on the way. (And I don’t say the same of Adam because he, unlike Jo still hasn’t grown up.) We watched as Kail struggled more, in my opinion, than any of these other girls. As Teen Mom came out, I remember seeing Kail do every fucking thing on her own. Getting into her little, tiny, place. Getting a job. Going to school. Getting a car. I will ALWAYS give Kail credit because she literally started from the bottom and she did work for everything in her life, on her own. For a while she was one of my favorite Teen moms because I loved watching her blossom and grow as a person and keep her life on track with no support. FAST FORWARD to now (or last year, rather, since that's when all this was going down.) what a difference I see in her! And not a positive one. Plastic surgery and MTV money have very clearly gone to her head. We all know she cheated on Javi first and that’s not even the fucking point anymore. Forget all the drama between the two of them. NO ONE (other than Jo and Vee, obviously) is taking two seconds out of their life to worry about how this is all affecting Isaac. It’s not hard to tell that Isaac is a very sensitive, sweet little guy with a huge heart and I was honestly fighting back tears watching Jo try to explain this current situation to him. Thanks to Jo, I think Isaac has a shot at some sanity here but if this was all left up to Kail, I don’t think she’d know how to handle his emotions. AND the reason for that is this; Kail doesn’t handle her own emotions. She was said before that she is robot. In my opinion, Kail has endured so much trauma and abandonment herself that she probably needs a fair amount of therapy to learn how to feel the things that she needs to feel. It is so heartbreaking to watch this family fall apart, but it is even more heartbreaking to hear Isaac say out loud that he is not okay, that he is scared and he doesn’t understand. I don’t think anyone should stay married if they are unhappy. That’s not healthy for anyone. But I think everyone involved needs to put themselves in Isaac’s shoes. He was been waiting for what seems like years to him for Javi to come home. Javi gets home, and then leaves again. He comes and visits, takes the boys places and then leaves again. How can Kail honestly believe that Isaac is just going to be okay? She is setting this poor little boy up for so many issues and I don’t think she even notices. Kail is strong, yes. And she’s been though a lot but I think she needs to realize that Isaac may not be as strong emotionally as she is trying to force him to be. On a lighter note, Javi’s friend is ridiculously hot.
