From mud to asphalt.
They often say that: you either are a rally driver or a road racer. Many broke this unwritten rule, the first that comes to my mind is Jim Clark, whom almost won the 1966 RAC rally in Great Britain; another exception is Finnish rally driver, Henri Toivonen.
In 1982, to try and avoid conscription into the Finnish army, Henri tried to take part in as many racing events as possible. He got a chance to take part in a few rounds in the British Formula 3, including the final race at Thruxton, in which he drove for the Jordan team and, suprisingly, finished 10th. “It was fantastically exciting” said Henri in an interview in 1984. “In F3, everybody wants to win at any cost, they're all crazy!”.
This amazing result earned him tests with nonother than McLaren, and later with March. Henri would recall “[In 1982] I got to drive Raul Boesel's March – what a thrill!”. What a thrill indeed! The Finnish driver had an advantage of 1,5 seconds on the lap time of F1 driver Raul Boesel.
Despite showing how much of a talented driver he was, and how worthy he would be to join F1, he preferred to pursue his rally racing career, stating that “I'm already too old to make a switch to single-seaters”.
Eddie Jordan was really amazed by Henri's raw talent, and would later say “I don't know if he would have become a champion in Formula 1, but he would have won Grand Prixs – of that I'm absolutely sure.”

24 HORAS DE LE MANS: 2022
Tumblr media
