If I were a cartoon review youtuber, some of my videos would definitely be:
Underrated Animated films you should see vol. 1 - ongoing
Complete look at Skunk Fu! and all it's episodes
What's ACTUALLY wrong with Illumination films (spoiler: it's not the designs). And that video would probably have a sequel ironically unironically accusing Chris Meladandri of being a White Walker who rips out movies' souls.
Disturbing Animated Film Iceberg.
A calming, sweet short retrospective on The World of Peter Rabbit and Friends.
Killing off the idea of "endgame". Tho, tbf, I'm definitely going to be writing that thesis statement down someday. I guess in video format it'd be a big "did this series REALLY fall off cuz the creator catered to fans?" breakdown of a few shows.
A video about 9. Because of course I'd make something about 9.
Politically heavy (but not horror) animated films.
An essay explaining the difference between what I want to see in a story vs what's actually good in a story; and likewise the difference between what I personally do/don't find offensive and what's objectively offensive as a viewer.
The dichotomy and standards between different talking animal films.
A review about Mary and Max and why I like it but it's okay if other autists don't. which would be a broader video about how to listen to the opinions of demographics and minorities and not to treat any one as a hivemind.
Movies that I dislike but aren't actually bad.
Movies I love that aren't really all that good.
A deeper dive on my take that Steven Universe was always deeply flawed but having an otherwise working ending; where Star vs was a well-written show that utterly biffed it on the ending.
The Swan Princess is secret conservative propaganda.
The 31 dumbest things in Oogies Revenge.
Zero's Journey is the only good TNBC continuation.
13 Horror animated Feature Films. For Halloween, of course...
My issue with Dreamworks' stans and why I dislike How to Train You Dragon 2.
My issues with Anti v Proshipping. Def would be a multi part series explaining why I think most of the problem is just people really aggresively bulling one another -AND THEN, getting into heinous fandom shit that no one talks about and the ethics of children online and freedom of expression.
Prolly then would make an exclusive (cuz it's dirty) review abt the rights of r34 and adult artists and what they had to/have to put up with both from peers and websites banning explicit material.
What absolutely doesn't work about Pocahontas and Anastasia.
I'd do a series called "Spitball Re-haul" wherein I go through a revisioned show's premise and then explain all the reasons for the changes. I'd make:
How I'd rewrite The Owl House season 3.
How I'd rewrite Star vs the Forces of Evil "Cleaved".
How I'd rewrite Strange Magic.
How I'd rewrite Raya and the Last Dragon.
How I'd rewrite Seasons 4-8 of Friendship is Magic.
My tinfoil hat video on Disney trying to profit so much off of fans is hurting their bases.
Mapping out and analyzing different types of crossover fiction, their merits and their issues with story-keeping.
Mythological and cultural animated films.
and finally, for when I'd muster up the strength:
an HBomberGuy-type callout/deepdive into MysteriousMrEnter and Lily Orchard and how they've made cartoon reviews worse.

Megan Fox's Poetry Book - Pretty Boys are Poisonous
Trigger Warning ✋
TW: Domestic Abuse: physical, psychological and emotional
Sexual Assault
————————————- As a bookseller, I recently was able to read an advanced reader copy (ARC) of Megan Fox’s poetry book. However, until release date, I am not supposed to quote, but I will give the best descriptions I can. Considering they’re short poems I’ll probably fail at that.
The book is clearly about her relationship with MGK. There’s only two conclusions I could make from this: she’s exaggerating what’s happening between them to get buzz, or she’s in an incredibly abusive relationship.
In terms of quality… the poems are not good. I don’t read a ton a poetry, but I know enough to know this isn’t great. I’ve seen better content out of middle school competitions.
Anyway, there are some poems that are obviously about MGK because they’re way too specific. Maybe some poems are about other men, but it would be few.
All poems and titles are written in lowercase.
In one of the first poems called ‘fucked-up fairy tales’ she describes a partner as violent and being physically abusive, leaving bruises while she is crying and begging.
In ‘aros’ she uses the word ‘abuser.’
One poem is called ‘rape.’
In one poem she describes her partner as too numb to have sex with her but also signing up for Raya.
One poem’s title calls her partner ‘narcissist’ who’s age happens to be what MGK’s would have been at the time of writing.
One poem describes herself as a sacrifice for her partner’s fame.
In one poem, she describes covering herself up to hide the bruises her partner left so that they wouldn’t feel guilty.
In one poem, she says she has been called a ‘stupid cunt’ many times.
In one poem she compares her partner to Patrick Bateman.
In one poem she says she wants to tell her partner that her previous partner had a larger member.
In one poem she says she’s addicted to the psychological abuse.
She describes her partner as a rock star more than once.
In one of the most interesting poems, she says she is scared to laugh at someone else’s jokes. She also will wear skimpy clothing so that her partner can show her off. She compares herself to a ventriloquist puppet.
In one poem she suggests that the fruit in Adam and Eve was actually a penis, but Adam didn’t use it.
In one poem she describes her partner as having been born with their umbilical cord wrapped around their neck. In one MGK track you hear his father describe how MGK was born with a umbilical cord around his neck.
One poem describes the partner’s emotions as unhinged.
One poem describes her partner as seemingly have been the victim of sexual abuse.
One poem describes how she slowly cut out loved ones from her life because her partner didn’t like them.
In one poem, the partner accuses Megan of wanting them to kill themself.
In one poem she mourns a pregnancy that never came to term. The ultrasound is on display by the bed.

I've been revisiting youtubers recently. some I like under the cut
Folding Ideas: a marvelously well-spoken social and media critic, with commentary on symbolism in film. his breakdowns of the editing failures of films such as Suicide Squad and The Snowman are entertaining and informative, and he has mini-episodes on narrative concepts like Thermian arguments (the Watsonian of Watsonian vs. Doylist explanations) and ludonarrative dissonance. politically on top of it (mostly), extremely astute, and a pleasure to listen to. See Earthsea and Adaptation Sickness, End of Evangelion and the Audience Author Membrane, The Thermian Argument, The Art of Editing and Suicide Squad, Cinematic Trainwreck – The Snowman: A Vlog, Cooking Food On The Internet For Fun And Profit, Annihilation and Decoding Metaphor
Ariel Bissett: a delightful young Canadian book reviewer takes us on her journey of renovating her old house. mostly cosmetic changes rather than structural as she's essentially self-taught, but she's a charismatic and charming host with a unique eye for style and color. her design sense matches closely with my own (we're both Monet fans), so I find her videos very soothing and satisfying to watch. I haven't seen any of her book reviews, but she seems thoughtful and passionate. I like all her house videos, but particularly the three yearly house tours so far (intro video, one year in, two years in,), Building The Perfect Guest Room, Complete Office Renovation!, Living Room Renovation To Look Like Emma's House!, Building The Perfect Reading Nook, Transforming the Smallest Room In My House With Wallpaper, and honestly all the others. it's a real pleasure to see the changes she makes over the months. I can't wait for the kitchen redo!
Accented Cinema: probably my favorite youtuber right now. he's a Chinese Canadian filmmaker with a focus on films and film-making processes, both his own and those from China (most often) and other non-American countries (occasionally). his videos have brought me to tears more than once. honestly I love too many to list all of them so I'll just list my top favorites but I highly recommend this channel. I loved Why China Cared About Kung Fu Panda, Shadow: Adapting Chinese Art, Who Killed Captain Alex: What Makes a Movie Good?, Chinese Animation: In Search of a Style (brief shot of mdzs donghua at the very end), Why Ghibli's First 3D Looks Soulless, East vs. West: Differences in Story Philosophy, Mahjong & Crazy Rich Asians, Why Are Kung Fu Movies So Patriotic, How I Made a Fake Video Essay
Local Script Man: a professional screenwriter whose advice and commentary on creating stories is really interesting and different than what you tend to see on tumblr. he tends to be kind of harsh but not in mean-spirited way, just in a way that makes it obvious that he knows what he's talking about. I like Oops No Plot, The Key to Writing Freakishly Good Dialogue, and both parts of 5 Essential Storytelling Rules I Just Made Up (part 1, part 2)
Schaffrillas Productions: a guy breaks down and ranks various animated films, often by studio. these videos are just a lot of fun. I liked his videos on the Shrek franchise (one, two, three, four, and the musical), and Raya vs. Encanto - How One Message Failed and Another Succeeded
Super Eyepatch Wolf: this man is, as we speak, convincing me to read Berserk. he has a slow, dramatic presentation of his arguments that draw you in and a great sense of humor. All of his "Why You Should Watch" videos are interesting even if you don't have any plans to watch the show he's describing, because they give an overview of the themes and strengths without spoiling it. he also presents a wealth of information on manga/anime history, and miscellaneous commentary on other media. I liked in particular The Fall of The Simpsons: How it Happened, "Non Battle" Battle Anime, What Makes A Fight Scene Interesting?, The Impact of Dragon Ball Z: The Series that Changed Everything, Why You Should Watch Yu Yu Hakusho, What Makes A Good Character Design?,
Cinema Therapy: these two guys are charming and sometimes funny. they can get annoying and their analyses tend to be very superficial, but I really like their videos tearing into bad romantic cliches. I like 10 TROPES We Hate About Rom Coms, 7 Tips from THE ADDAMS FAMILY to Keep Your Marriage Alive, TITANIC: Love Triangles and Compatibility, Therapist Reacts to THE KISSING BOOTH (Part 1, Part 2), Relationship Therapist Ranks Christmas Romances with guest Shona Kay
Sideways: a channel about music! knowing nothing about music at all, I find these videos really interesting and accessible. see Why the Music in Cats (2019) is Worse than you Thought, Why Pipe Organs Sound Scary, Decoding the Music of The Matrix, Why Avatar has the Most Ironic Soundtrack of All Time, Why the Soundtrack to Shrek is Actually Genius, Ear Training and Sight Singing: The Superpower you get from Music School, Why "Spoken Word" Makes me Nervous
Pop Culture Detective: I like this channel for the analyses of troubling tropes in media, especially the ones on misogyny. See Marvel Defenders of The Status Quo, The Ethics of Looking And The “Harmless” Peeping Tom, Born Sexy Yesterday, The Complicity of Geek Masculinity on the Big Bang Theory, Sexual Assault of Men Played for Laughs (Part one, Part two), Stranger Things, Belligerent Romance, and the Danger of Nostalgia

A Review of Adele Lim’s ‘Joy Ride’ (2023)
Tumblr media
Joy Ride (2023) is a comedy movie directed by Adele Lim, who is making her directorial debut. The film follows four Asian-American friends, played by Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu, and Sabrina Wu, traveling throughout China searching for Audrey’s biological mother. Audrey was adopted by American parents as a baby, leaving her no recollection of her birth family and heritage. Along the way, they encounter various challenges, including a drug smuggler, a Chinese businessman, a famous actress’s fiancé, and a basketball team down for fun. The movie is a funny and candid exploration of identity and self-discovery, highlighting the universal truth of accepting and loving oneself.
Let me be honest; I do not directly relate to the main characters. I am a white male who was not adopted by parents who lived in another country. But I still appreciate the movie’s story and find the comedic situations hilarious. I always value it when I can walk into a viewing of a film with the intent to be entertained with a good story and be given exactly that by the time the end credits begin to roll across the screen. This movie accomplished meeting my expectations.
Behind the scenes, Joy Ride is helmed by Adele Lim, an accomplished Malaysian-American screenwriter and producer who has made quite an impression during her tenure in Hollywood. Her notable contributions include co-writing the groundbreaking romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians (2018), which broke a 25-year record by being the first American-based film to prominently feature an Asian cast, a feat previously achieved only by The Joy Luck Club (1993). Lim has also contributed to the screenplay for Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon (2021), an animated fantasy adventure inspired by Southeast Asian cultures.
With her background in journalism in Malaysia, Lim boldly pursued her dream of becoming a television writer and has worked on several successful shows such as One Tree Hill, Private Practice, Lethal Weapon, and Dynasty. Lim is passionately committed to sharing authentic and diverse stories that reflect her personal experiences and heritage and is dedicated to mentoring and advocating for aspiring writers of color in the industry. Her work has earned several well-deserved awards and nominations, including a Writers Guild of America Award, a Critics’ Choice Award, and a Hollywood Film Award.

this is really late, but I saw your comments on the bad faith YouTube video on Raya and the last dragon. I def agreed with points raised in the video (mashing together multiple cultures while trying to claim representation was awful and racist and performative of Disney, esp when it was clearly added late in the game). But I also felt many criticisms were in bad faith. One thing that really bothered me is that multiple times they had an Indonesian person go “yes I know that this thing exists in Malay/Filipino culture, but to Indonesians it has DEEP SPIRITUAL MEANING and they didn’t do it the Indonesian way, so it was wrong”. Maybe because I’m Malay, but it was so offensive to imply that our culture isn’t as good/less “deep”/our culture being referenced wasn’t “authentic” enough - esp when the video supposedly is about how Southeast Asia isn’t a monolith and its history and culture is so complex! For all their talk that this was Southeast Asian voices sharing, it sure as hell felt like some countries were talking over others.
Also some of the criticisms of the storytelling felt like they didn’t realise the movie is for 6 year olds. We could meaningfully discuss then whether trying to tell this story was a good idea or not, but of course it was going to have a simplistic wrap up of gem back = unity. A film for 6 year olds is NOT going to discuss the current geopolitical and internal racism of Southeast Asia. I also took issue with some of their suggestions for “proper Seasian stories”. I don’t like the themes or writing in Raya that much, but there is also a middle ground that there are multiple possible story ideas out there that we as Seasians can write. Or maybe I’m just sick of our stories always having to be about how our families don’t understand us.
Like, I don’t think Raya is good representation and it’s got definite writing issues imo. But that video had a LOT of issues. 6 hours was not necessary to summarize their points and the video was frankly guilty of some of what they criticised.
Thank you! It doesn't surprise me that they were leaving out some SEA cultures in their criticism, there's many points where they don't understand something and then just...ignore it rather than at least checking if it means something outside of their particular culture (i.e. the martial arts review that only focused on two moves because those were the two the guy knew and then used that as a basis for reviewing all the action rather than even looking at the other martial arts used). It seems like there was just a few people ranting about their specific viewpoint and what they wanted rather than an honest attempt to educate others and discuss. And yeah, the editing was terrible and they could have cut it down a lot more.

WDAS TAGTEAM REVIEWS MOVIE #60: ENCANTO (2021)
Encanto! Or as I like to call it: Monster House The Good Ending
Sixty films in, and WDAS is still making musicals. If any other studio made mostly musicals, I gotta say they probably wouldn’t last. Disney just has a great way of doing these sort of things that others have a difficult time replicating consistently.
Ok, so we’re several movies into this inconsistently ongoing marathon, so I’ll try to keep this as short as I can. This movie was pretty darn good!
The plot was fun for the most part, and I loved the concepts that this world presented. Its got that X-Men/My Hero Academia way of portraying people with superpowers, but as a musical.
(Note to self: Begin writing X-Men musical)
The one thing I would say I didn’t enjoy about the plot would be that I don’t think that family should have gotten their magic powers and house back at the end. It made all their work seem pointless to me.
The visuals were beautiful, and I liked how vibrant the colors were. I didn’t hate Raya, but that film had a distinct love for beige that this film thankfully avoids.
I do think Disney needs to change how their CG characters look. I feel like ever since Tangled, they haven’t really made any efforts to make their human characters distinct between films. I still LIKE these designs, don’t get me wrong, but it’s getting a little repetitive.
Look at movies like Spider-Verse or Luca, Sony and Pixar are really making an effort to make each movie look different compared to each other in the character design department.
The characters here are great though, especially since there are so many of them! Mirabel is a great protagonist, and you really want to see her succeed. Bruno was probably my favorite. I like when threatening characters are revealed to just be big softies after all the buildup.
Finally, the music from LMM is great. He knows the formula to a successful Disney musical score and he takes full advantage of it.
One thing though, almost every musical number in this movie except for the finale is a dream/fantasy sequence. I know that you can do a lot more with animation, but I would’ve liked to see maybe a little more restraint.
But overall, I was entertained! I was certainly more engaged with this one than I was with Raya, but that’s probably cause I’m a sucker for musicals. I’ll definitely watch this one again cause I know I probably missed some of the small details.

Yooooooo I just finished The Heroine’s Journey by Gail Carriger and it was so good!!! I don’t read a ton of non-fiction, especially not about writing, but  I picked this book up because I love Gail Carriger’s writing (I’ve read most of her Parasolverse and I’m planning on reading her other series eventually) and it was definitely worth it! Would highly recommend to “writers, readers, and fans of pop culture” as it says on the cover.

Judul: Gadis Kretek Penulis: Ratih Kumala Tahun: 2012 Whoa! It’s good to be back writing again.
Kita mau makan apa? Buruh-buruh kita mau dibayar pakai apa? Kalau Bapak bisa nemu pemodal, ya silakan. Tapi yang pasti, jangan ngacak-acak modal Kretek Merdeka!.”
Dasiyah – Idroes Moeria Halaman 141
