A late entry for this Halloween🧙🧹, a complete 1964 Milton Bradley Monster Old Maid card game. Featuring #universalmonsters on "Monster size cards" the box had some rubbing and paper separation to the lower right hand corner. Rose Quartz is dead. Rose Quartz made the decision to have Steven, knowing full well that it would end her life. I don’t want to get into the politics of abortion, but even if she only figured that out once she was already pregnant, “abortion is okay if this baby will Literally Kill the Mother” is a position held even by lots of abortion opponents. I’m certainly not going to offer a huge objection.

Considering the depressive symptoms and self-loathing we’ve seen Rose have post-Greg, I do think it’s more likely that Rose made the decision already knowing it would kill her. I’ve been to the bottom; it’s easy to fantasize about the end of your pain bringing joy to others, a net positive from the death of someone who won’t be missed. That’s your brain lying to you, offering you a way out, offering an end to your pain through convenient rationalizations.

As an aside, it makes me really angry when people go “uwu Rose Quartz’ death was so beautiful, she just wanted to be a mother”. Rose Quartz’ death should not be romanticized because Rose Quartz’ suicide should not be glorified. Nobody’s sending this message intentionally, but what you’re saying when you sparkle up Rose’s death is that suicide can be a good thing, that if you go out with a Grand Plan you WILL be giving a net positive to the universe instead of doing nothing but causing those who love you grief and pain.

I’ve been to the bottom, and I’ve clawed my way back up more than once. That’s the crap your brain whispers to you in your lowest moments, when you’re convinced there’s no other way out, that nobody wants you, that nobody needs you.

It’s bullshit. Please try not to say things like that.

(Also, she was never a mother. She essentially abandoned Steven on a doorstep. She forfeited her right to the mom title when she did that.)

Anyways, I have a pretty good idea why Rose killed herself. Depression, self-worth issues, despair after five millennia living with the calamity she feels responsible for calling down on the Gems on Earth. I’d like the show to address why she abandoned Steven, abandoned Greg, abandoned Pearl and Garnet and Amethyst. They’ve started to move on, to find peace after her passing, and Pearl in particular is healthier for having lost the object of her fixation. Now, we need Steven to be able to let go, to leave her behind, to make his way out of her shadow--or, at least, to stop shoving himself back into it.

She’s gone. It’s time to let her go.
