Andy Compton returns to the Viva Recordings label, this time accompanying New York-bred vocalist Rogiérs (pronounced Ro-ghe-ay) for the deeply soulful “Feel Free”. Andy first visited Viva in 2000 with The Rurals and his Farmyard Flavours singles and full length album, and “Feel Free” shows the Peng label head, prolific producer, and busy globe-trotting DJ still residing in the classiest of deep house digs. “Feel Free” floats and cruises in the most musical way, with a simple yet longing bass line forming the foundation for Rogiérs’ yearning words. Gentle drum beats, chiming electric piano chords, and the coolest of synth solos combine to create a bonafide late night winner. An instrumental is also available for those wishing to go on an unguided journey, and the Guitar Dub – which replaces the vocal with lovingly filtered and effected guitar riffs – is on hand to inspire the dreamiest of dance floor visions.

On this day of the gutting of #AffirmativeAction, advocacy and a few other things-here's a thought about the Atheist "Community" as I've experienced it:

(1) "Community” is not having a few drinks and laughs together at a conference or rally. (2) When a person is perceived as “useful”, people will cover-up for them. When they are not, they will be treated with indifference. (3) The George Floyd & "BLM" social justice wave provided non-profits everywhere a platform of opportunism disguised as care.

So many thoughts worth comment on regarding blatant hypocrisy of the formalized Secular Humanist & Atheist Community-especially concerning its use of Black people for #DEI bona fides. However in general, this one resonates with me the most:

-> Opportunism disguised as "care" is not "community".

On a day where the Religious Right can congratulate themselves for hard work on years of flawed arguments, conflations, false equivalencies, deception & un-scientific dogma, I'd like to highlight my musical friend and colleague Dan Barker of the #FFRF. His organization is one of many secular orgs championing #freethought #reason #science & #religious education to ensure equality in the protection of #churchandstate.

In winter of 2022 I sang with Dan here in Wisconsin as we prepared for a new project called #GodlessGospel and we will continue to lend our voices and actions for a more just world, and in doing good for goodness sake. ❤️

The Pew Research Center confirms a trend nearly every US survey conducted over the last twenty-five years has shown: the remarkable decline in religiosity and deference to religious institutions and dogma within American society. Black Americans (despite a much slower decline) are no different.

I am an artist first. A singer-songwriter, musician, arranger and producer. But I am also a humanist; a critical thinker, self-identified with the tradition of revolutionary Black Freethinkers and powerhouses before me from Makandal to Frederick Douglass, Hubert Harrison, Lorraine Hansberry, James Baldwin, Sikivu Hutchinson and so many more. 

I lend my voice to this cause blending artistry and activism. World history, US history and my personal history demands this. And while I have been called every name in the book by many of my fellow Black Americans, their misunderstandings, bigotry and ignorance cannot be my preoccupation. I speak with the same voice of resistance as the ancestors previously mentioned; the ancestors that helped bind the hands of the oppressor and gain liberation for ourselves and our families. I speak with a prophetic voice, not borne of superstition but of the realization of what current circumstances, trends and history predict vis-a-vis demonstrable facts and precedents. Black History is alive and well within me and I will always be proud of standing up for myself and the dignity of reason, autonomy and ethics. For these things, as well as my art, will be my legacy.

It was ten years ago: 2011. I was in the midst of three major life transitions and was eagerly planning to resign myself from the music business (saving that for the memoire). But after crossing paths with an admirer turned A&R, I was urged not to “retire” but to make another album. Though reluctant at first, I did.

A year and a half later “theShedding” was completed. But it didn’t come out until 2014, two years later. This was due to dozens of setbacks and problems launching the single; a nearly catastrophic video shoot, thieving snakes for business partners, disgraceful & insulting “friends”, exhaustion with labels and “industry”, missing audio files and later crippling unemployment. I would stop singing for an entire year and lose my voice.

But something about “Good To Know You”- that no matter how bittersweet my reflections, it has always made me stop short of cursing the whole experience of making this record. And I believe it is because this song in every part was made with love, and in love.

I will forever be grateful and indebted to my friend Sparks-who though he didn’t realize it, picked me up from the lowest of lows and helped me get back my voice to sing. Al Copeland who brought me to Boston for this performance after a year of being away from everything & everyone. And special thanks to Thomas for shooting this video, and Robin, who have supported me since #Day1 more than 20 years ago. This song is my emotional masterpiece 🤩. It represents growth and gratitude-and no matter how bad things become, it ALWAYS reminds me of the magical time we had recording it live and the true meaning of loving yourself through change and disappointment. 💞
