Review #146: Parallel Lines, Blondie
Man oh man oh man. I love Blondie so much. I found this record in the Windsor Oxfam. I don’t remember exactly how old I was, but I remember what boyfriend was with me so that puts me between 15 and 18. Yeah, same guy. I actually don’t remember if he ended up getting his hands on this record or not. I think I still have it. Will rifle through my collection later to check.
Blondie was in the “being cool” wilderness for some absolutely crazy reason at that point, and nobody really gave a shit about them anymore. When I was 17 or 18 they were playing the Reading Hexagon which is honestly still just such an unbelievable insult I’m still annoyed about it. I’ll circle back to that.
Parallel Lines epitomizes the complete and total coolness and badassery of Debbie Harry. I have never wanted to be someone more than I wanted to be her. So much confidence. Such incredible cheekbones. Such commitment to art. No apologies. The voice of an angel one moment and snarling whimsical warnings, like, hey you, don’t fuck with me, the next. Always standing in front of all of those completely non-descript nobody dudes. Yeah they’re playing the music, but who cares, who are they? It’s all her. She is Blondie.
Can I pick a favorite? It opens with Hanging on the Telephone, in which she is really threatening to rip the phone clean off the wall. It might be that one. But we’ve also got the classic One Way Or Another, which needs no comment, and one of my actual favorites of all time, Heart of Glass which never fails to fuck me up, but like, it’s a god damn disco track? Like sure, yeah, let’s boogie away our heart break. And I did. And I have. And I will. And these are all SINGLES. We aren’t even discussing the actual album tracks yet. Just listen to it. Honorable mention goes to Sunday Girl, which I always really loved. It’s cute and it’s kind of sweet in a very teenage girl kind of way that worked for me since I was in fact, a teenage girl. Also, not on the official album release, but there was a version of that track where the latter half was sung entirely in French and I always really dug it.
Okay so circling back to the Hexagon. This is a weird story and I’m still not sure how I feel about it, to this day. As I said, Blondie were playing a show at the Hexagon. I was absolutely obsessed with them, and Debbie Harry. I was also 17 or 18 and spent every penny I had on going to shows, but those pennies were pretty limited. I worked as a waitress at the pub that was two doors down from my house. It was full of characters. One such character was a regular, he was in his late 40s, was very wealthy, didn’t drive, was single, and spent literally every bit of his spare time in that pub. Think on that. He paid a lot of attention to the various young women that worked there. Was he creepy? No not exactly. But did it make you uncomfortable? Yes it did. Because you never knew when he might make it weird. Everyone liked him well enough. One day out of the blue this guy presented me with five tickets to the Blondie show. I didn’t know what in the hell to say or whether to accept them. Or what it meant. Whether there were expectations attached to them. Whether it was okay to take them. I was uncomfortable. I was 17.
Here’s what happened. My Mom, who sort of knew him too, since he was always there, decided it was fine, because she wanted to go. But for it to be okay, she decided he also had to come. So we went, he came, and a few friends too. The thing is though, she never knew him like I did. I saw him every day. I saw him with the other girls that worked at the pub. I saw him drunk off his ass. I don’t know that I ever would have taken the tickets. Or if I did, I’m not sure I ever would have invited him. I feel a bit queasy about it to this day. I think in the end something really off-base happened one night between him and someone on staff and he got barred. That was usually the way it went with regulars who were there that often.
The other thing to note is that Blondie ended because Debbie Harry was with Chris Stein, who was literally dying of some rare autoimmune disease throughout their last tour. There were other factors at play, but essentially, they broke up because he was too sick and she stayed at his side and became his full-time carer. When he was well, he left her. They are, remarkably, still close friends to this day and still perform together. Just never forget that men are dogs, and that Blondie is and always will be Debbie Harry. I love her. To this day she looks better than I do in a mini skirt and I love that for her.
ETA: I checked and in fact, I do not still have Parallel Lines in my record collection, but I am quite confident it got lost when I moved back to the US. Also, I’m not 100% certain that show was at the Reading Hexagon. I just know it was a shitty venue not worthy of Blondie. This was 18 years ago. You get the idea.

Show #43
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Title: Hertford, Hereford, and Hampshire
Show Release Date: April 12, 2023
Hello everyone, and this will be the first time a blog is posted at the same time as a show.  So, it may require editing, updates, or just some good old fashioned fixing at a later date.
The good news, is that the editing is still fresh in my mind as I have just completed it and made my notes to what I want to say here.  There are more references and uses of songs that need to be addressed, and a lot has changed since the third show that I last posted about on this site.  But, follow us on Twitter and you will find out when I post about the older shows.
So, this is possibly the 43rd show we have recorded, and that includes any of our holiday specials or any other odd thing we did.  By the time I update the shows betwixt the third and this one, I should have the counts straight, so we will say 43 just to get through this post.
Unlike previous posts, I am going to drop references as they come up, so this may look a little different.  Much like the show, this site needs some tweaking on format and will absolutely change around as we go.
First, you might be wondering about the title of the show, even after you've heard the show, you may still be wondering about it.  Well, it is a lyric from the song "The Plains in Spain" from "My Fair Lady".  There is another hidden meaning, but I will come back to that at the end of this season, as all the titles have a running theme - which you may or may not have guessed.  The main reason for this lyric is that Scott makes a rather astute parallel of Amy Winehouse to Eliza Doolittle.  Absolutely fantastic.  So, I really wanted to use that bit.
Our first round matchup is between Carole King and Lauryn Hill (Tapestry #25, and The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill #10).  We start with Carole an the many songs she has written for other artists in the Brill Building.  The Brill Building was discussed in Show #10: Frank Sinatra: The Tenth Wonder of the World  when we discussed Laura Nyro. And take a look at the Wikipedia page showing all of the songs that Carole King has written and the artists that made them popular - she was even sampled by the friend to the podcast, Kanye.
In our discussion, we referenced the Rocky Horror Picture Show and its executive producer Lou Adler.  Lou is responsible for bringing the stage version to Los Angeles, giving us the cult classic film, and unfortunately he also gave its sequel that should have never been made.  But in case you are curious, the entire movie can be seen here on YouTube.  You were warned, so send your complaints elsewhere.
There follows a short spot for the podcast Fancy Bread Miami - go check them out.  They are really great guys and their show is well done.
Next up is Lauryn Hill.  Dave brings up the lawsuit with musicians that played on the album that were not given and credit.  This article came out in August of 2018 discussing the lawsuit that took place.  We also make fun of how I totally mispronounced the OutKast's album title "Aquemini" in episode #16 (or possibly 17): Podcasting in the Name of.
There is a joke about how many songs Michael McDonald is featured on, and my estimate is way off.  Check out this page to see all of his contributions.  Also take a look at James Taylor and Joe Walsh.
The middle quiz game will get its own blog page.  Please watch this space for it.
The second round begins with Amy Winehouse and the brilliant reference to Eliza Doolitle - watch this clip from the movie and it will all make sense.  And you have not heard Amy Winehouse speak, watch this.
There is a documentary film about Amy Winehouse, and I highly, highly recommend it.  It is tragic, but it is done very well.  It is called "Amy".
We move onto Aretha and I mention the movie that goes along with this album is fantastic.  I could not find a clip of everything her father, but if you see the movie, you will hear his phenomenal, oratory voice and the love he has for his daughter.  Also, "The Old Landmark" was in the Blues Brothers film and the song is led by James Brown, and you can watch it here - I promise you, the best six minutes of your day!
Note: for our next show, I say that we are going to cover Eric Church.  And, he was voted off the island before the next show was recorded, and we failed to address it.
Thanks for coming out!
Songs used:
Title: Entitled "Comedy Theme" by user Hagfilms at freesound.org
Carole King - "It's Too Late"
Lauryn Hill - "Doo Wop That Thing"
Amy Winehouse - "Me & Mr. Jones"
Aretha Franklin - "The Old Landmark"
Outro - "Touch Me There" - a silly piano bit I made

Green Day - Basket Case 1994
"Basket Case" was the second single from Green Day's third studio album, Dookie (1994). The song spent five weeks at the top of the US Billboard Alternative Songs chart and garnered a Grammy Award nomination in the category for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group. In 2001, the song appeared on their greatest hits album International Superhits!. In 2021, "Basket Case" was ranked number 150 in Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time". Billie Joe Armstrong said "Basket Case" is about his struggle with anxiety; before he was diagnosed with a panic disorder years afterward, he thought he was going crazy. He commented that at the time, "The only way I could know what the hell was going on was to write a song about it." The video was nominated for nine MTV Video Music Awards in 1995, but did not win in any of the categories. It received a total of 85% yes votes!

A Million Times, Yes
Tumblr media
player: Ruben Dias words: 915. Whoops! request: Ruben Dias  | 250 - 500 | You / your  | Okay so I can’t really make up my mind if Ruben knows the reader already, or gets to meet her in Portugal. I would leave that option to you🙈
So I’m thinking that you absolutely love the beach, the long walks along the water, or just the peace that it brings to you. You and Ruben walk alongside the water and he is just mesmerised by the fact that you’re totally relaxed, because usually your stressed out from work. You have deep conversations about everything that’s coming to your minds and he realises that you are the one for him. So after the time in Portugal, Ruben makes it his mission to take random trips to the sea whenever you are stressed out and one day he asks you a very important question.
Tumblr media
-
Ruben bringing you to this particular spot was normal now and just driving here made you feel at ease in some way. He’d noticed the change in you when he took you to one of his favourite spots in Portugal, somewhere close to where the water was and as you’d sat with your eyes closed, listening to the lazy lap of the waves against the rocks. He said you’d stood a few inches taller because of the stress and weight of everything lifting and in a way, you had felt it too.
Now, he couldn’t just fly you back to Portugal after a rough day, but he did find two different places which he hoped could mimic that feeling, one was a lake near where the two of you lived and the other was a seaside resort when you needed the sea. It wasn’t completely the same but closing your eyes, you could picture you were. He’d sometimes bring a packed lunch, something for the two of you to nibble on as you’d unwind and put the world to rights and a blanket for when you’d remained out there way after the sun had gone down and a chill had crept in, sweeping in over the water surface until it had reached you both; prompting him to pull you close and hold you in his arms until you wanted him to let you go.
Today was no different. Ruben had shut you down the moment you’d opened your mouth to say that you’d debated picking up a shift because they were understaffed. You knew oh too well what it felt like to be there alone, or pretty much alone for the good of some of your coworkers who were more than a little work shy, but it didn’t feel as though anyone else would do the same if you were short staffed, explaining that you could handle it better than anyone.
He hated it when you came home burnt out, crabby and somewhat emotional at times because of how often you found yourself in this situation. But he made you text your boss back and reply that you couldn’t pick up the extra shift because you already had plans and only once that text was sent was he somewhat satisfied. He’d watched as your deteriorated throughout the week and you knew another water trip would no doubt be arranged soon.
“It just pisses me off.” you confess, picking up a light, smooth pebble like stone that’s been worn away over time from the water and rolling it between your fingers until you’re happy before skimming it over the surface. Ruben’s been quiet for the past 10 minutes. Each time you’ve looked at him, he’s been shredding blades of grass or picking at some of the food while watching you and letting you get it all out of your system. He’s hummed and ahhhh’ed in the right places, given advice when needed but mostly, he’s allowed you vent undisturbed.
“It pisses me off because I know I’m capable of running that shift, I’m not saying that I’m not. But I shouldn’t have to run it by myself.”
“It’s the principle.” He adds.
“Exactly!” You send another one flying over the surface, ripples forming where the stone briefly kisses the top before you’re bending to scoop up some more to choose from. “I can handle it, I always do but it does feel as though I’m not respected. Not by the manager, not by those I work with. Because it’s fine. Miss Dependable will be there to pick up everyone else’s pieces, but who’s going to pick up mine Ruben?”
Frustration has you sending a stone flying but rather than skimming the surface like before, it plonks down into the water, sending water splashing in every direction the drops can reach. When he doesn’t reply, you turn on your heel to look at him, only for the stones to fall from your fingertips and land assorted at your feet.
Ruben kneels before you, a look on his face like you’ve never seen before as he grasps a small opened box revealing a dainty but perfect ring. It’s not big. It’s not a show stopper which demands attention and holds down your hand with the weight. It’s perfect. It’s you.
“I will. I’ll be there to pick up the pieces now and for as long as you’ll have me.” He says, tone of voice matching the expression upon his face and you try to place which emotion is the dominant one. He sounds worried, terrified and yet, there’s the slightest slither of confidence to speak those words that comes through.
“Well that’s one way to calm me down.”
“Your ranting wasn’t planned.” He admits and chuckles to himself. “There was just no stopping you once you got going.” this time his laugh openly verbalises with no worry. “But it snapped you out of your bad mood, you’ve unleashed most of that frustration and I’m hoping that we can put a smile on your face and something else on your finger…” he drops his gaze between the ring and your hand. “Because I’ve been thinking about every way to do this and being here with you is where it feels right. Being with you feels right and I don’t want anyone else by my side for the rest of my life.”
“I don’t want or need anyone else either. It’s you and it’s a yes, a million times over.”

I think people say Red is Taylor’s only true breakup album because that’s kind of what Taylor herself has said she thinks. Per Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums podcast: "I look back on this [Red] as my true breakup album, every other album has flickers of different things. But this was an album that I wrote specifically about pure, absolute, to the core, heartbreak.”
A great quote! Tysm for this reminder. And with that in mind I do agree. As per her, a lot of her albums touch on or talk about a breakup but RED really is the one that top to bottom centers the most on that crash and burn process coming down from a singular breakup.
… Which brings us to TTPD.

Review #7: Rumours, Fleetwood Mac
I might have met a person who hasn’t listened to Rumours, but I’ve never met a person who has listened to it and was like “no thanks”. Never. If anyone hates this record get in touch, I just want to talk.
So interesting that such an incredible piece of work that holds up decade after decade, represents a band that during its creation was a damn hot mess. It’s not just a breakup record. It’s a double breakup record. Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham had called it quits, and John and Christine McVie were circling the drain, divorcing while they toured Rumours. Hoo-boy can you feel it all. Never has such an overall cheery and upbeat record been so deeply filled with resentment, anger, heartbreak, defeat and getting the fuck over it. You’re just trying to keep up with which song is a fuck you from which band member to the other. Except you can’t, because you end up just getting lost in the music.
Never mind that before all of that, the drummer had an affair with Mick Fleetwood’s wife and all hell broke loose. Line up changes and whatnot. They started as a blues band, y’know? Yet, here we are, with this gorgeous thirty nine minutes of music and a group of people that arguably should seek therapy, rehab, and probably never see each other again. If David Attenborough is a Fleetwood Mac fan — and let’s assume that he is — he would say, “life… finds a way”.
As is often the case I had actually heard covers of a few of the songs as a young’un before ever hearing the originals or ever hearing the full album. Eva Cassidy covered Songbird. It was my childhood friend’s favorite song, and makes me think of her every time I hear it. The Corrs, Irish sibling band, covered Dreams in the late 90s. Their whole thing was a little weird. Jack Dee used to have a bit about the “odd” Corr brother that wasn’t invited to be in the band, Pat Corr. It was pretty funny. That old boss of mine used to say disparaging things about Andrea Corr as if she’d ever have given him the time of day. It makes me want to punch things, even now. I realize in hindsight he used to tear down any Irish woman musician that saw more success than him (see also: Sinéad O’Connor, Delores O’Riordan). They all did see more success, and they all deserved it, with two of them leaving legendary musical legacies even after death. He never made it past a breakfast show that had two knockoff muppets as presenters. I’m not joking.
Let’s talk about Second Hand News, what a charming and odd way to open an album. Buckingham wrote this and he’s generally acknowledged to be a real piece of work (allegedly, John McVie threw a glass of vodka in his face during the making of the record), even now. He insists he “ain’t gonna miss” Nicks when she goes, and that he’s been “tossed around enough”, but it’s pretty clear he ain’t over it. Boohoo, Lindsey. Such light acoustic riffs, luscious harmonies and hefty rhythm throughout with some outro guitar solo just to really make its point.
Dreams is a Stevie Nicks led classic. Let’s talk about Stevie. She’s been my hair inspiration for most of my life. She put out solo shit that was every bit as good as this record. Her voice sounds like that of a woman who has lived a thousand lives. An old, witchy, wise, woman, living in a young, exuberant, beautiful woman’s body. Like smoke on water. She warns Buckingham of his inevitable loneliness… “when the rain washes you clean, you’ll know”. Oof. For as tough and witchy as she is, there’s a real tenderness to her. I’ve always admired her ability to show the world all of her sides, the badass and the vulnerable. Pretty recently she showed us that vulnerable side when we lost Christine McVie. Stevie let her deep grief be known to the world. Whatever had gone on with that band, that was her best friend, and they’ll never sing together again.
This really is one of those where all of the tracks are amazing, but they’re all really different. Some are like standing in an open field of sunflowers, while some are like that part on a rollercoaster where you’re climbing slowly up the incline just waiting for the chaos. The Chain, I think, has to be my favorite for that reason. What I find so interesting is that they’re all credited as writers on this one, so it was an actual team effort, it would seem. First and foremost, the four (five?!) part harmonies in this are so incredible. It’s no softy squishy Simon and Garfunkel shit. These people are pissed, in different keys. It’s POWERFUL. But each instrument also has a voice of its own, the bass line, the guitar solo, the simple drum beat that evolves into a sprint. Whoever was on the tambourine even was going really fucking hard. It takes you on a damn journey. That rollercoaster was wild, let’s go again. And again. And again.
I used to have this record on vinyl and it sadly was one that got lost along the way between the UK and the US. I’ll say, it sounds mighty fine in that format. For a while in and after college, I lived in a shitty house in East London (it’s definitely fancy now but it was a rathole when I called it home). The kitchen ceiling literally caved in once. Anyway, it was me, my then boyfriend, my best girlfriend, and four other dudes. Sometimes we had just one rotating roommate. The point being it was some chaos, not unlike Fleetwood Mac in the making of Rumours. We were all a damn mess. But we were united any time I stuck this record on my turntable, or any time I was doing the dishes and one of the singles came on my absolutely adorable digital radio that looked like a teeny tiny Marshall Amp (add to list of things I wish I still had). I think of the good times in those kinda bad times when I hear Rumours, which is sort of the point of the album, as pointed out by Stevie in 2002:
“If you took out all the bad stuff in the band, the songs wouldn’t have happened. There simply wouldn’t have been a Rumours if everything had been fabulous.”
I’ll take her at her word, anyone with bangs that effortless can really do no wrong.

@jilymicrofics July Prompt 8: Hazy || 500 Words || NSFW || Canon Divergent MICROFIC MASTERLIST
Note: Look. I was going to try and wait until tomorrow, (especially since I dropped a oneshot today) but it's tomorrow somewhere, and Taylor (and specifically I Can See You, a Jily song if I've EVER heard one) has absolutely invaded my brain.
Smut below the cut.
Red hair falls in waves down her back, collarbone exposed to the warm summer air as his lips descend on the smooth pale skin, kissing each freckle in a trail down the slope of her breasts, hands moving up to gently work them until a soft moan escapes from between swollen lips.
Feet fumble as they blindly make their way back, back, back against the stone exterior of the cottage, lips traveling up her neck to meet her own, mouths parting and breath mingling, sharp little gasps escaping her as his fingers roll over piqued pink peaks.
The scene swims and suddenly the garden, the gentle sunlight is gone. Instead there’s a storm raging outside and the power is out in that Order safe house they shared in Portsmouth. A handful of candles light the room and she’s on top of him, flushed skin aglow in the candlelight, head thrown back in ecstasy as her hips move faster and faster, his glasses skewed on his face as he looks up with awe, hands gripped so tightly into her hips his fingers will surely leave marks.
A groan rips out as he rolls her until her back is against the mattress, red halo hair strewn over the pillows, and he continues her pace, leaning over and capturing her lips hungrily as she shudders around him with a delicious cry.
Another change, this time on a couch he vaguely recognizes as hers. There’s a warm glow from the lamps, and judging from the kitchen window it’s around dusk. They’re upright, arms slung around on another, knees and thighs touching, lips lazily moving together as hands move from hair to face to chest to arms—lightly touching, tentatively exploring their fully-clothed bodies. His lips trail to where her neck and shoulder meet and she lets out a breathy sigh of his name, “James…”
Something about that, about his name in her mouth like that sends him reeling back and he blinks rapidly as the library of the Order’s Headquarters comes into focus, a flushed and fuming Lily Evans sitting before him.
“Have your fun?” She bites, her voice strained.
“I don’t—Evans—what?” His mind has trouble focusing, hazy thoughts of gardens and candlelight and swollen lips and the way she bloody sounded crying out in that safe house scrambling his mind and affecting all of his senses. He’s confused. “Those…weren’t memories…”
She glares, and James notices the heaviness of her breathing. “No. Seems like you dug a little further.”
”Further?”
“Dreams, Potter.” She tears her eyes away, crossing her arms and muttering, "Fucking Moody’s fucking Legilimency practice."
“Dreams?” James breathes, and the blood in his veins hums. “You have drea—those kind of dreams? About me?”
Her simmering gaze flickers back to him, and he’s not sure if he imagines the way it briefly drops to his lips or if it’s just the memories of her dreams playing tricks on him.
“You’ve seen for yourself.” She breathes. “Happy, Potter? Or would you like to see more?”

On this day in 1977, the Fleetwood Mac LP “Rumours” went to #1 on the US Billboard 200 Album Chart (May 21)
This wonderful, eclectic, emotional musical rollercoaster was famously born out of the band’s relationship turmoil, and is arguably one of the best albums of all time.
“Dreams”, “Don’t Stop”, “Never Going Back Again”, “Go Your Own Way”, “The Chain”, “Songbird”, “Gold Dust Woman”, “I Don’t Want To Know”, “You Make Loving Fun”.....just a classic piece of vinyl.
“Rumours” was an instant commercial success, selling over 10 million copies worldwide within just a month of its release, and becoming the band's first #1 album on the UK Albums Chart, also topping the US Billboard 200.
It was also #1 in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the Netherlands, and South Africa.
The record has received a Diamond Award from the Recording Industry Association of America for a 20× platinum certification or 20 million copies shipped, making it, as of 2021, tied for the eleventh highest certified album in US history.
In 2003, it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
In 2018, it was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry, being deemed "culturally, historically, or artistically significant" by the Library of Congress.
In 2020, Rumours was rated the seventh-greatest album of all time in Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time".
Mick Fleetwood has called “Rumours” “the most important album we ever made", because its success allowed the group to continue recording for years to come.

WEEKLY TAG WEDNESDAY
Thank you, my darlings @jrooc @mybrainismelted @energievie
Name: That Bitch
What is the most listened to artist in your music app of choice this month? The Rolling Stones? (how the fuck did that happen?)
What song do you know all the lyrics to? Any song? Or a Stones song? Any song, off the top of my head, The Cure's "10:15 Saturday Night" & "Doing the Unstuck." By the Stones, ugh, I don't think I know any of their songs all the way through. Eep! 😬
youtube
youtube
What song do you pretend to know all the lyrics to and sing along to even though you don’t? Oof, so many. One that comes to mind right now is "Echame La Culpa" by Luis Fonsi & Demi Lovato.
youtube
If you were to be crowned Queen/King/Royalty of listening to a band or artist, who would that be? Rancid.
youtube
What band/artist surprises you the most on your frequently listened to artists? I have no idea why the fuck Alanis Morissette continues to pop up on my random, also Maroon 5. At least I can say Taylor Swift pops up on my frequents 'cause I share my profile & people listen to her music. But the other two? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Why? 🤦🏻‍♀️
Favourite line from a song (or one you have been thinking about lately? One of my all time favorite songwriters is Jarvis Cocker. He has a way of turning a phrase that I find absolutely captivating.
In the song, "Seductive Barry," he wrote: "I will light your cigarette with a star that has fallen from the sky." Which is not a new phrase, but the way he uses it within the context of the song makes it ✨ special. ✨
youtube
Guilty pleasure band or song? Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam's "Can You Feel the Beat," & "We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off," by Jermaine Stewart.
youtube
youtube
Okay let’s talk fandom music:
Fave band or song you’ve discovered from a Fan Fic? I think the one that's stuck with my the most has been "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" the Daniel Duke version of the song originally done by The Proclaimers. It was used in AllThatMatters' fic The Ghost of You and Me.
Fave Fanfic Playlist? I like clicking on to playlist to see what's on them, but I can't think of any memorable ones right now. I think for me I have clearer memories of songs that are attached to a specific moment in a storyline or that are suggested as a play-along during a chapter.
Fave Gallavich song? "Pink+ White," by Frank Ocean.
youtube
Do you listen to music recommended by the writer or an included playlist? If there is a song that is recommended in the beginning notes, I will listen to it while I'm reading or before I am reading if I am using the screen reader while I'm driving. I don't always get a chance to listen to everything, but I do like to hear a song or two in order to get into the atmosphere the writer's trying to create.
What song do you think is Gallavich coded? Oof, so many. Gimme a sec...
Well, on the angst side, I've had Beck's "Lost Cause" stuck in my head.
youtube
What’s a bop you want to share with your mutuals today?

I made a post a couple days ago expressing my frustration about music not being a thing in itself anymore. someone tagged it with something to the effect of “perhaps on the internet”. I’m not posting this to pick on them, I just want to use this as a jumping off point to talk about how/the ways in which this is pervasive outside of this.
“stan culture” for sure is something that’s strictly of the internet. but bizarre poptimism-as-politics is a mainstay in formal music publications as well. one thing I’d like to use as a case study here is rolling stone magazine’s (once the seminal “rockist” publication) list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. the initial 2004 list has been revised twice – once in 2012, and once again in 2020. for my purposes here, I’m going to focus on the 2020 list.
some of the inclusions on there include taylor swift’s “1989”, harry styles’ “fine line”, lady gaga’s “born this way”, beyonce’s “lemonade”, and billie eilish’s “when we fall asleep, where do we go”. in the grand scheme of things, 500 albums isn’t very many, and these honestly have no place there. and I’m saying this as someone who likes, um, two of these albums. meanwhile, pink floyd’s “animals” was omitted entirely, which is objectively a better album on a technical level than any of these.
there’s also no way to say this without sounding like a dick, but marvin Gaye’s “what’s going on” was given the top slot and you just… know this was in response to george floyd, not because the publication had any organic desire to honor gaye as an artist. and i love marvin gaye!
meme that illustrates my feelings towards marvin gaye:

it’s just all very depressing to me lol.

Blupjeans Week Day 3!
With a clean 500 words, I present to you something silly based on the prompt Strings. I enjoy referencing other fandoms in my fics, so enjoy the Indiana Jones reference :]
Also, TW/CW: Spiders
Strings of white, silky thread threaten to cut through Lup’s IPRE robe as she sits, tied up, in the corner of a small cave. Around her the silk strings dance through the air, flowing as if through water. She attempts to take a deep breath, but the constriction of the bindings prevents the inhale.
Barry is dropped near her extended feet, equally bound by the white silken threads. He lays on his side, and the top of his head snaps against the stone floor with a disgustingly wet sound, but all he does in response is groan in discomfort.
Lup glances down at him with wonder. Sure, Magnus is the tank of their operation, but something about the resilience of Barry Bluejeans is comforting. And attractive. But oddly enough, that attraction is taking the backseat in this situation.
Alright, maybe the passenger’s seat.
“Hey, Babe,” Lup says. Her lack of breath is betrayed by the wheeze that accompanies the words.
Barry’s eyes are still pinched together in pain when he speaks. “Hey, Lup.”
Lup looks around the cavern and the strings of white thread. “This sucks, huh?”
Barry hums. “Spiders,” he mutters. “Why does it always have to be spiders?”
“The size of dogs, too,” Lup says.
Hissing noises have peppered the air around them, but one particular hiss catches her attention. It’s louder than any of the others have been, and it pulls her attention up into the webbed rafters of the cave.
She inhales sharply. “I’ve got a better idea, actually, fuck this,” she says, panic rising in her voice. “I’m burning a spell slot.”
She casts Fireball and braces herself. The blast of flames comes shooting out from behind her, burning away the wispy strings of webbing. The binds around her body fall away, and she pushes herself forward, to Barry.
Above them, tens of dog-sized spiders begin to his and snarl in their direction, descending the strings of white silk followed by their mother, which is easily the size of a fantasy Buick.
Lup rips the web off of Barry and helps him to his feet. “Come on, Bar-Bar, we gotta go, go, go!”
Barry lets himself be pulled haphazardly to his feet, but hurries after Lup nonetheless. As they exit the cave, she burns another spell slot, casting Fire Storm into the spider-infested cavern. She makes sure the two of them get far enough away from the cave and into the jungle they had been scouring for the Light of Creation before dropping to her knees to take a deep breath.
Barry drops down to the ground next to her and rolls onto his back, taking deep breaths of his own.
After a few moments, he looks over at her.
“How did you cast that?” he says. “It’s not even a Wizard’s spell.”
Lup sucks in another breath, this time one to calm her emotional fire. “Barry?”
“Yeah?” “You are so lucky I love you, or you’d find out exactly how I cast that spell.”

On this day in 1983, the ZZ Top LP “Eliminator” debuted on the US Billboard 200 Albums Chart at #32 (April 23)
ZZ Top’s eighth studio album featured the hit singles "Gimme All Your Lovin'", “Legs” and “Sharp Dressed Man”.
It was ZZ Top's most commercially successful release, with sales of 11 million in the US alone.
Guitar World wrote in 2002 that ZZ Top had been expected to fail in the MTV era, but that they "surprised everyone with Eliminator, a brilliant merger of roadhouse blues and synthesizer swells and looped beats".
The album went to #2 in Australia and Canada, #3 in the UK, #4 in the Netherlands and New Zealand, #9 in the US, #11 in Switzerland, and #13 in Norway and Sweden.
Rolling Stone named “Eliminator” #398 on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
The video for "Legs" earned the band the MTV Video Music Award for Best Group.
