For Christmas, my family has made my "to read" pile even bigger!
Emperor of Rome, by Mary Beard: Her latest book! I didn't even know it was out yet, but I enjoyed SPQR and all the documentaries she's hosted. She's good at emphasizing the diversity of the Roman world and ordinary people's experiences, so I'm curious to see her perspective on high-level politics, too.
Inverse Cowgirl, by Alicia Roth Weigel: A memoir about sexuality, gender, and identity from an intersex activist and human rights commissioner in Texas, USA. Makes me proud to see other Texans working towards a kinder, more sensible future.
All About History: Book of the Roman Empire, ed. Dan Peele. A magazine-style book full of infographics, chapters on religion, the military, everyday life, and some famous Romans, and lots of glossy pictures. I'm most curious about the profiles of Agrippina the Younger and Julia Maesa, along with the sections on the Crisis of the Third Century, bathhouses and crime. Might also post excerpts of Nero's profile because I know a few of y'all are really interested in him!
I have eaten far too many cookies and gotten dog hair all over my pants. Gonna try finishing Plutarch's Life of Romulus later. I hope y'all also have a wonderful day!

Bahçesinde Arısı Olanın Kesesinde Sarısı Olur
Tumblr media
Sevgili Dostlar,

Federico Fellini
By: Grace Small
Frederico Fellini is an Italian director best known for creating films such as Roma in 1972, and La Strada in 1954. Fellini was born in the Italian town of Rimini on the coast of the Adriatic. He was born on January 20, 1920, and passed on October 31, 1993. Fellini was Painted as one of the most successful directors and filmmakers after the second world war. Federico Fellini created a cinematic world around the world he had experienced.
During the time in which Federico Fellini was brought into this world, during March of 1922 in the great country of Italy, there was much more than a birth of a groundbreaking director happening. During the time in which Fellini was born and growing up, growing up he was surrounded by the effects and events of the second world war. October of 1922 is when the March on Rome happened causing Mussolini to take power in Italy. This was the rise of fascism within Rome and Musollini became a dictator.
Using the world around him Fellini practices Neorealism within his pieces he creates. Neorealism is the practice of  “poetic realism” within the film world Fellini came to be known for his practices of using a fictional idea of the truth (Britannica). Within Fillini’s films he would take real world stories such as ones that fall in line with the aftermath of the second world war he would use to make the story he was trying to convey be more full. The Neorealism movement was popular in the 1920s, it was surrounding fellini from a young age within the popular literature and cinematography of the time of control within Italy. Neorealism thrived after the conclusion of the second world war. Fellini routed his work in stories he could tell from first hand experience or the overall experience of living during Fascist control in Italy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Being able to see popular directors and writers pay tribute to legends within the cinematic universe. Fellini has made a lasting impact on the way modern film is received and created. For example 8 ½ dance scene is a great example in which Tarantino adapted the scene from 1963 and made it memorable again in 1994. The dancing scene from Pulp Fiction has been referenced in sitcoms and redone in different films making Fellini’s impact last longer and deep-rooted.
When looking deeper into the film 8 ½ its self critics have raved about this film and examined its deeper level of appreciation for the film. A critic from The Guardian states “As he suggested, his films are trials, but as seen by an accomplice, rather than by a judge”. Michale Newton, the critic that said that Fellini never judged those who deal with similar issues that his characters endure in 8 1/2 , fellini merely highlighted and embraced the difficulties of “having it all” or attempting to have it all.
Tumblr media
Federico Fellini embarrassed the life he was given and the stories that he has gained throughout the way and turned them into cinematic magic. Fellini took the world that was ever-changing in his beloved country and made light of the dark actions of the fascists' rule and the fall of that empire. Fellini created a romanticized version of real-life struggles that he has dealt with to make light of it. Turning pain into art, Fellini has been praised for the different avenues and hands-on approach he had within his craft. Federico Fellini turned his life's struggles and pain into something more people can relate to.

The word "graffiti" is derived from the Italian "graffiare," "to scratch." The -i ending is plural - in the singular, it's "graffito."

(I was going to put a giallo gif here, but honestly, they're all disgusting.)
(Giallo in English refers to the very violent/gory/generally bonkers 1970s horror from Italy. Argento, Bava, kiiiiiind of Deodato and Fulci. Do not look them up unless you have a very strong stomach. Very strong. Just trust me. They put Deodato on trial for murder because it looked so horribly realistic in one of his movies. I am not kidding. You know Hostel? You've heard of Hostel. Eli Roth made Hostel. Know who Eli Roth loved??? Deodato.
[Deodato honestly seems like he was pretty cool, but he died back in December. Not my kind of movies, but he seemed to have fun with it all.]
Anyway, I bought the notebooks because they were funny, BUT DO NOT LOOK UP GIALLI IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GETTING INTO.
Yes, I've seen some. Just trust me here.
And... have a poster, fuck, I don't know:
Tumblr media
Probably the most famous giallo [in the US, anyway]. And hey, fun fact, I used to know Jessica Harper. That's her. 😅)
(And yes, I'm wearing WDW 50th anniversary Crocs in the notebook picture. I'm also wearing multicolored cargo pants and mismatched socks. Don't even start. I do not care. When in Rome, send the Romans fleeing in terror from my fashion sense. Carino. Vaffanculo. 😝)

Marcel Proust, dunque. Insegna letteratura francese a Tor Vergata. That Keep men Sassy | The Hour Markers
One of the most prominent and sought-after luxury brands in the world is Bvlgari. Founded in Rome in 1884 by Sotirio Boulgaris, a Greek silversmith (who later changed his surname to appear more Italian), the Italian brand is highly regarded for its jewelry, fragrances, and accessories, and most crucially, its watches.
Tumblr media
While Bvlgari may be best known for its jewelry, it has long been respected as a serious player in the world of fine watchmaking. Contrary to many luxury brands, Bvlgari has made significant investments in its horological expertise. For example, in the 2000s, Bvlgari expanded its watchmaking expertise by purchasing renowned brands like Daniel Roth and Gérald Genta, the name brand of the man who created legends like the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and the Patek Philippe Nautilus. In fact, Bvlgari's Octo Finissimo line has produced numerous world firsts in the watch industry, with notable examples including the thinnest mechanical chronograph, minute repeater, and most recently, timepiece in history.
The fact that Bulgari watches are Swiss-made and feature incredibly sophisticated in-house movements makes them a genuinely feasible alternative to some of the great names in the market. Most significantly, compared to other luxury watch competitors, Bvlgari watches offer a wholly unique appearance. They seamlessly meld the worlds of fine jewelry and expensive horology since they are both bold and elegant.
Here are our five Bvlgari watches for men that keep it sassy.
Bvlgari Octo Roma:
The Octo Roma is available in a wide variety of dial colors and complications, but we’re big fans of this brown time and date-only variant. A rich, lush brown like this is unique - and really gorgeous. Right now, blue and green dials are all the rage in the watch industry. The thick alligator leather band and the dial go together beautifully.
Tumblr media
Let’s start with the Bvlgari Octo Roma. The historic Basilica di Massenzio, a notable Roman landmark, served as an inspiration for Bulgari's Octo watches, which are renowned for their distinctive octagonal case shapes. The Octo Roma, too, is a landmark watch for Bvlgari: architectural, distinctive, and stylish, it’s a great watch for all occasions.
This Octo Roma is 41mm in diameter and powered by Bvlgari’s in-house BVL 191 Solotempo caliber, which is decorated with Côtes de Genève, chamfering, and snails. It’s pretty to look at through its sapphire crystal case back. A 42-hour power reserve and 50m of water resistance round out this versatile watch.
2. Bvlgari Octo Finissimo
Bvlgari's Octo Finissimo series, a different take on the Octo, has been available since 2014. Compared to the Octo Roma, it is sleeker and features a fantastic integrated bracelet. How thin? 6.4 mm. That’s pretty impressive! Water-resistant to 100 meters and boasting a 60-hour power reserve, its BVL 138 Finissimo movement features a platinum micro-rotor – something very much in vogue at the moment.

Additionally, the Octo Roma Carillon Tourbillon is made of platinum, with a 72-hour power reserve and a massive freaking tourbillon in pride of place at 6 o'clock (with those case band and back elements crafted from titanium). Bvlgari has a wide range.
