I learned today that, in 1941, Bette Davis was paid $385,000 to appear in the film adaptation of Lillian Hellman’s The Little Foxes.
When I saw that, it seemed pretty hefty for 80+ years ago, and it is: roughly $8.4 million in 2024 money.
Now, that’s not quite Keanu or Leo or Sandra money—they’re in eight figures regularly—but for a serious literary property that was hardly a feel-good picture, that’s quite a chunk of change.
