Before Malkmus went solo ... Malkmus went solo! The long-awaited Terror Twilight deluxe edition landed last week and it's been great to revisit Pavement's swan song, as well as get acquainted with a host of demos, alternate versions, live performances and more. This audience tape of SM alone in SoCal is a missing piece of the puzzle, coming right after he and the gang got together up in Portland, OR to begin work on the album — and by most accounts failed miserably.

However, Steve still had his new tunes and he randomly popped up in Long Beach for two solo shows with Scarnella (Nels Cline and Carla Bozulich), accompanied by his own pre-recorded demos and samples of Moby Grape and CCR. I was there, dear reader! A weird but wonderful evening — the Long Beach Museum hosted a series of outdoor concerts each summer, but I'm guessing the artists featured were usually more middle of the road. You can get a sense of the odd scene from this video, with rosé-sipping locals trying to get into the strange Scarnella noize. I don't think I make an appearance, sadly. Malkmus is not quite a seasoned solo performer at this point (a lot of tuning breaks!), but he still sounds super cool, playing the new TT material, some "lost" tunes, and covers of Steeleye Span and the Silver Jews. Enjoy these blue arrangements ...
