Senator Tuberville Holds Military Promotions Amid Abortion Funding Policy Dispute
This article discusses Senator Tommy Tuberville's stance on President Biden's military promotions and his refusal to release holds until the administration reverts its abortion funding policy. The Biden administration accuses Tuberville of jeopardizing national security, while Tuberville argues for individual nominations to be voted on. Despite criticism, military branches and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer have yet to respond.

He keeps repeating we need to have more kids and is then caught by surprise when the reporter explains that is the purpose of In Vitro Fertilization.
Alabama has decreed frozen embryos to be children and any that do not produce a child leads to everyone involved being prosecuted for murder. This is causing hospitals to stop performing IVF procedures.
Make no mistake, Republicans have declared war on women, science, education, marginalized people, and the future. Women and marginalized people are fleeing the deep red states in droves.

Obviously, the Alabama Supreme Court actually putting fetal personhood into law is another victory for creeping Christian Authoritarianism and yet another attack on health care, womens' rights, and bodily autonomy....but watching the Republicans flip their shit now that IVF clinics are in danger of closing is hilarious in a "the clown car is on fire" kind of way.
Because of course this was going to happen. Fetal personhood and anti-surrogacy (especially in the context of same-sex parents) has been bouncing around in conservative religious and legal circles (but what's the difference?) for decades, with those pesky liberals warning about it for just as long. Anyone with an inkling of awareness of the issue could have seen it coming.
So the fact that they were caught so off guard is myopic enough. And they're panicking for a very good reason, because yanno who generally goes to IVF clinics?
The people who can afford it.
Certainly the abortion bans in various states were bad, but if you had a lot of disposable income you could just...go to another state. Extremely inconvenient, yes, but not insurmountable. But this?

Oh my god, now the far-right pro-life politics that you've been cultivating for going on fifty years is now in a position to affect people with money? People that matter? Now you have to try and contend with the very extremist judges you installed that don't have to worry about getting elected and whose decisions are now putting you on the political chopping block?
Join us the in misery you're created for everyone else, assholes.

Senator Tommy Tuberville does not have a lot of fans these days—on either side of the aisle—thanks to his ridiculous blockade on military nominations and promotions, which he continues to hold up because he’s mad about reproductive rights. On Wednesday, for instance, members of his own party called his now monthslong stunt “a national security suicide mission” that is doing “great damage to our military.” And after comments he made on Thursday, he’s unlikely to convince more people to come over to his side!
Speaking to reporters about the apparent heart attack suffered on Sunday by Marine Corps commandant General Eric Smith—which Army veteran and Senate Armed Services Committee chair Jack Reed said he believed was in part due to being overworked as a result of Tuberville’s blockade—the Senator from Alabama scoffed at the idea that he had anything to do with it. “The Marine Corps commandant probably got 2,000 people working for him,” Tuberville said. “Jack Reed blamed me for his heart attack. Come on, give me a break. This guy is going to work 18-20 hours a day, no matter what. That’s what we do. I did that for years.”
You might be under the impression that Tuberville actually served in the military, but that is not the case. In fact, Tuberville has no military experience whatsoever. When he said, “I did that for years,” he was presumably referring to his job as a college football coach, which he held before becoming a Senator in 2021. (He has nevertheless also said things like “there is nobody more military than me.”) As Insider notes, while Tuberville was coaching football, Smith—who Reed says was doing two jobs at once at the time of his heart attack—was earning a Purple Heart.
Since being elected in 2020, Tubverville has made a name for himself not just as a guy who has left hundreds of military jobs in limbo, but as an idiot and apologist for white nationalists. Shortly after his victory over Doug Jones, he claimed that the three branches of government were “the House, the Senate, and the executive” and that World War II was a fight against socialism. Later, he insisted that white nationalists are not racist before begrudgingly reversing course.

A veterans group is running this ad in Alabama aimed at Sen. Tommy Tuberville – who the narrator calls "Senator Trouble".
Tuberville is holding up Senate confirmation of senior US military commanders to protest abortion.
GOP splits further over Tuberville’s military blockade as it stretches through summer
Tuberville's grandstanding is putting US national security at risk – and he just doesn't care. While some Republicans disagree with Tuberville, they are unwilling to do anything to break the logjam.
Just as Republicans can no longer be regarded the party of law and order, they have also forfeited cachet of being strong on defense. Staying on the good side of anti-abortion extremists is more important to the GOP than protecting the American homeland.

By Alexander Bolton
The Hill
April 25, 2023
Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R) on Tuesday blocked a request by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) to allow 184 military promotions to move forward over his objection to the Pentagon’s recently enacted abortion policy.
Tuberville’s protest of the Defense Department’s policy of providing leave and reimbursing some expenses for service members who must travel to obtain abortions has held up a range of military promotions for months, and the first-term senator is vowing not to back down anytime soon.
“One senator is personally standing in the way of promotions for 184 of our top-level military leaders. One senator is holding up pay raises for men and women in uniform. One senator is blocking key senior military leaders from taking their posts. One senator is jeopardizing America’s national security,” Warren said on the floor.

The year's worst senator.
Tumblr media
December 28, 2023
As is our semi-regular custom, we herewith present the most appallingly dreadful US senator of the year just ending. And, of course, it's former Auburn football coach and current Alabama embarrassment Tommy Tuberville (pictured above straining to form a coherent thought). Tuberville began his political career in 2020 by getting himself elected to the US Senate as a Republican (natch). He seems to have successfully resisted learning much about government in the three years since.
But, then, he didn't know much to start with. On the campaign trail Coach Tuberville asserted,
Our government wasn't set up for one group to have all three branches of government. You know, the House, the Senate and the executive.
Things have just gone downhill from there. Weighing in on the jury verdict that found Donald Trump liable for sexually assaulting and defaming E. Jean Carroll, the coach remarked, "It makes me want to vote for him twice." It's statements like these that cause him to be universally regarded as the dumbest man in the Senate.
Plus, he's also a racist! In an interview in May, Tuberville made this comment about Black inner-city teachers: "I don’t know how they got degrees. I don’t know whether they can read and write." Asked on Birmingham radio station WBHM whether he believed the military should allow in white nationalists, Tuberville said: “They call them that. I call them Americans.” And speaking of the military.
Tuberville earned nationwide scorn this past year by putting holds on Senate-confirmed promotions for hundreds of senior military officers, thereby thoroughly upsetting the chain of command, seriously disrupting military readiness and recklessly endangering nation security. Admiral Lisa Franchetti, Chief of Naval Operations, said it would take two or three years to fix.
The Alabama senator's excuse was that his MAGA sensibilities were offended by the military's policy of paying expenses for women service members who must travel to obtain legal abortions. Also, he thinks there's too much "wokeism" in the military, as evidenced by “people doing poems on aircraft carriers.”
Finally, The Washington Post reports that Tuberville doesn't even live in the state he represents (a constitutional requirement), but rather "his home is actually a $3 million, 4,000-square-foot beach house he has lived in for nearly two decades in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida.”
As if being racist, stupid and duplicitous weren't enough, Tommy Tuberville is also un-American. Did we mention he was one of eight Republican senators to vote against certifying President Biden's election victory? For all this, we bestow on him without reservation the 2023 title. And a Happy New Year to all our WoW readers.
