The Radio Times has some additional info on who is playing who and a quote from Meadows which explains a bit why we're not getting what we thought we were getting:
Speaking about the series, Meadows explained: "I really wanted to delve into the history of this story and the circumstances that lead to an entire West Yorkshire community risking their lives to put food in their children's bellies.
"It was during the workshopping process with the actors I realised there was also a story to tell leading up to Ben's incredible book. A prequel that not only allowed us to understand 'why' the Cragg Vale Coiners did what they did, but maybe fall in love with them a smidge while they did it."

For a bit of happy, I belatedly listened to Adam Buxton's interview with Paddy Considine. Such a delight. If you are a fan of Hot Fuzz or House of the Dragon there's some nice chat. But one of my favourite films is 24 Hour Party People, and Considine shares some fantastic behind the scenes stuff about filming in the Hacienda Club and scintillatingly spooky synchronicities. Great listen.

“One of the last sessions I had with the psychologist, he said to me, ‘Imagine you could go back and make that event not happen. The risk is that you quite possibly wouldn’t be doing what you’d be doing now. Would you go back and change it?’ And I know I wouldn’t. Having experienced that, and the empathy that comes with it… I’d never swap that in a million years. I certainly wouldn’t swap telling stories. That is just part of my life and I’ve got through it. It’s lovely to know I can.”
-- Shane Meadows, about the horrific event from his childhood that inspired The Virtues (x)
