+ · 。~ my besties aethelstan and cynlaef
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing: cynlaef x f! OC (platonic), aethelstan x f! OC (platonic?), other characters mentioned | genre: headcanons, fluff, a tiny bit of angst, humor, found family | warnings: none | wc: 1k+ |
synopsis: being uhtreds youngest daughter and being best friends with aethelstan and cynlaef.
note: These are just some headcanons for a Wattpad fic I have for my OC (Eisa ) Uhtred’s youngest daughter. I’m thinking of also publishing it here. Just let me know in the comments if you guys would like that. My requests are open!
thank you @ivarthebadbitch for letting me use the lovely gifs <3
☆ Eisa first met Aethelstan when they were children (8). He was extremely quiet and timid, and she was loud and mischievous. He found her quite intimidating, but that didn't stop her from trying to befriend the quiet boy.
☆ The two of them got closer when her dad took him in.
☆ Eisa and Aethelstan met cynlaef a few years later and the three of them immediately hit it off. Cynlaef was only a year older than the two.
☆ The three of them only got closer as time passed. They even had a reputation of always being up to no good when the three of them were together…which was always.
☆ Trouble always seemed to follow the three of them. And when they did get in trouble they were always sent to uhtred or finan, the two boys would send Eisa in first knowing that the two men couldn't stay mad at her for long.
☆ The three of them knew everything about each other. To the point that they knew what eachother was thinking, just by looking at each other. A talent that annoyed a lot of people.
☆ The three love to bother Young uhtred, they were always testing his patience.
☆ They also loved messing with Finan, especially when they were bored. The trio would act extremely nice to finan to the point that it gets suspicious, making him think that they did something. When the trio never did anything.
“Okay what are the three of ya shits up to?”
“Nothing uncle finan, Why?”
☆ The innocent smiles they would give Finan would make him groan in anger and leave, mumbling curses to himself. Leaving the trio to laugh and enjoy the ale he left behind.
☆ In all honesty the trio was finan’s nightmare and god did they love it. Finan had no way near enough patience for them.
☆ Eisa, Aethelstan and cynlaef were the designated babysitters for sihtric and sidgeflaed. Most of the time it wasn't too bad, the kids really liked the trio, but sometimes it got a little…chaotic. Aethelstan and cynlaef were in charge of the entertainment and Eisa was in charge of watching over them all. (Yes including Aethelstan and cynlaef)
☆ The trio was also in charge of walking anyone back home if they were too drunk, Well it was mostly Aethelstan and Eisa because somehow cynlaef would end up drunk too.
☆ When it was summer the trio was almost always found by the river; probably trying to push each other in. Eisa would even convince finan, sihtric osferth and Uhtred to join. And if they were lucky young uhtred would join.
☆ Annual and accidental sleepovers were big in the trio's friendship!
☆ Eisa would be sleeping peacefully in her bed, Aethelstan would be sleeping on a fur blanket in front of the fireplace in eisa’s room with a book at his side, Cynlaef would be hunched over at eisa’s desk or asleep next to Aethelstan.
☆ Eisa’s father uhtred many times would go check on her in the middle of the night only to find the two boys asleep on her floor.
☆ He definitely wasn't happy about it first but he slowly got over it…very slowly.
☆ The trio has so many inside jokes. They would be in a corner just laughing and talking about them and finan’ osferth and sihtric would just be watching them with a confused look, trying to understand what they are saying. (they don't)
☆ Eisa and cynlaef tease Aethelstan all the time for being a ‘good boy’. He always listens to uhtred and the others.
☆ Eisa and Aethelstan tease cynlaef all the time when he does stupid things or says stupid stuff. (I'm sorry he just gives off such himbo vibes?!?!)
☆ And Aethelstan and cynlaef like teasing Eisa about the small crush she had on sihtric when she was younger. It would usually ends with her embarrassed and shouting at the two and them running for their lives.
☆ There is just a lot of teasing in the friendship and it's all out of love ofc.
☆ The three of them love training together. Well more like Eisa loves training with them.
☆ When Eisa had an ax or sword in her hand it just made her 100% more intimidating, and she was really good with them too.
☆ So most of the time Eisa trained with sihtric while the two boys watched with wide eyes.
☆ Eisa liked to tease them saying that sihtric was the only one who could keep up with her anyway.
☆ Christmas/yule was the trio's favorite time of year. They would plan so many things.
☆ Snowball fights? Yes.
☆ Making snowman? yes.
☆ Throwing snow at Finan and young uhtred when they least expect it? Yes.
☆ Stealing warm ale from the ale house and drinking it in eisa’s room? Yes.
☆ They would spend months finding each other perfect gifts. Aethelstan always got Eisa the best gift, they were a lot more personal. (something that cynlaef teases him about when there alone)
☆ Sitting next to each other at the feast and messing with finan, Whenever finan would get distracted they would take his cup of ale and switch it with water, sometimes they even got sihtric involved. The trio would end up blaming it on osferth.
☆ Sitting next to the fire together and listening to Finan and Sihtrics horror stories.
☆ Uhtred puts the three of them on lookout duty as punishment whenever they get in trouble. Little does he know that they actually enjoy it. The trio could make any situation fun if they tried.
☆ They definitely get yelled at many times for being too loud or laughing at serious times, well mostly Eisa and Cynlaef…Aethelstan is too much of a good boy.
☆ There is so much trust in this friendship.
☆ Cynlaef and Aethelstan like to think that they are the ones protecting Eisa but in reality Eisa is the one protecting them.
☆ Eisa and Aethelstan helped teach cynlaef how to read.
☆ Cynlaef likes teaching Eisa more about the gods, Eisa loves listening and he talks a lot so it works out perfectly.
☆ Cynlaef is the first person Eisa and Aethelstan would go to if they needed uplifting.
☆ Even with his carefree spirit cynlaef could be intimidating if he needed to.
☆ Cynlaef is such a flirt! Eisa and aethelstan loved watching him make a fool of himself when he flirts with the woman at the ale house.
☆ Cynlaef used to playfully flirt with Eisa all the time and it never bothered her because she knew he was joking. But when cynlaef noticed that his flirting with Eisa was bothering Aethelstan he stopped. (Eisa ofc didn't know this)
☆ When it's just cynlaef and Aethelstan, Cynlaef loves to tease Aethelstan about Eisa all the time and how differently he acts around her.
☆ Aethelstan is extremely protective of the people he loves, he will do anything to keep them safe.
☆ Whenever Aethelstan is upset or angry Eisa can always find him training or at the dock, watching the water.
☆ Aethelstan hates being alone, it reminds him of his childhood where he had no one. Now that he has people, he doesn't want to leave them.
☆ Aethelstan often sneaks into eisa’s room at night whenever he gets nightmares.
☆ Aethelstan will have late night talks with eisa where he talks about the small memories he had of his mother, or things about his childhood he wouldn’t tell anyone else.
☆ Cynlaef and Eisa can tell when something is bothering Aethelstan because he becomes quieter than usual.
☆ Aethelstan loves reading to Eisa and cynlaef.
☆ Aethelstan is an observer, he likes watching the people around him.
☆ Eisa loves to draw, her room has many drawings everywhere, most of them being Aethelstan.
☆ The trio has their own special spot in the woods, they often go there when they have nowhere else to be. The boys can often find Eisa there sitting down and leaning against a tree drawing.
☆ Eisa has a fear of lightning and thunder so they always come over to stay with her so she's not alone.
☆ Whenever Eisa leaves to go visit Stiorra and Sigtryggr the boys just wander around, not knowing what to do now that she’s gone. The others notice a change in them and bring it up a few times.
☆ Finan thinks it's funny how they deny it but go back to pouting a few minutes later. The point is they miss eisa when she’s away for more than 2 days. They're kinda clingy.
☆ When she comes back from her visit, they demand to spend the day with her and if she can't they would go back to being pouty and huffy.
☆ Eisa’s favorite person is Sihtric. ( it doesn't really go along with the genre of headcanons, but i just had to say it)
☆ Going horseback riding and having races…the boys won’t admit it but Eisa wins most of the time.
☆ They get yelled at almost once a week for being late to their duties.
☆ Eisa having to get used to the fact that no boy will ever step close to her because of all the intimidating men she’s surrounded
☆ Late night conversations that would last for hours, talking about random things or more…emotional things. The three of them had been through a lot and they feel very comfortable talking to each other about it.
☆ Their friendship means a lot to them, and they will do anything for each other.

the fact that everyone was making fun of sihtric bc of his wife and number of their children through 4 seasons and he was the family guy in the group all this time just for totally ignoring their existence in the movie-
and idc that sidgeflaed could be already dead or that sihtricssons/-dottirs are all adults who decide to leave him and live somewhere else, that's a lazy explanation, my slutty dane and me deserve more, you already erased from existence sihtric's firstborn son who disappeared after season 3, where is sihtric's private village is what I'm asking

sldkfjdsk i'm the one who sent in that ask last night and yes i am just sitting here wondering how the fuck you keep track of all of them………are there like six aethels?? and three other aelfs or whatever. i am so lost
Tumblr media
HAHAHAHA
Ok so Aethelflaed and Aethelred have a daughter named Aelfwynn, naturally. Then Aethelhelm (not to be confused with Aldhelm) has a daughter named Aelflaed (not to be confused with Aethelflaed, see above), and Aelflaed and her husband Edward (Aethelflaed's brother) have a son named Aelfweard, whose half brother is Aethelstan (son of Edward and Ecgwynn)—both boys are cousins to Aelfwynn. Aelfwynn, Aelfweard and Aethelstan's grandmother, mother to Aethelflaed and Edward, wife to Alfred, is named Aelswith. There is also an Aelfric (rip to the one true DILF on the show) and there was an Ealhswith in the books (not to be confused with Aelswith, which is just a different spelling of the same name) but they did a sensible thing and changed Ealhswith's name to Sidgeflaed for the show (wildly different, I know). There's also another Aethelred, brother to Alfred, whose son is Aethelwold.

Did I miss anyone?

Do you remember back in season 2 Uhtred trying to show off for Gisela when he was training with Clapa? What about a prompt where Finan was doing the same to impress Ingrith.
A/N: Ah i loved this idea!! Hope you'll like what i did of it ahah. Thanks to @emilyhufflepufftlk who also gave me ideas for it ;)
Don't hesitate to send me prompt for Finan and Ingrith if you have any, I'm just in love with writing them!
Distracting Sight - Finan x Ingrith - Drabble
Finan chuckled as Aethelstan was put on his arse by Osferth in the square. The young bastard grunted frustratedly and wiped the sweat from his face, his long hair sticking to his forehead.
“Ya need to be more attentive!” Finan scolded him, his hands on his hips. “Ya can't just focus on his sword hand, one fights with all of their body.”
Aethelstan sighed, exhausted, but gratefully grabbed the hand Osferth offered him. Finan crossed his arms and watched the two former monks fight for another round. Aethelstan fell again from a hit he could have easily seen if he had been really observant and Finan shook his head exasperatedly.
“Alright, I’ll show ya.” Finan sighed, waving at Aethelstan to leave the square.
The young bastard threw his sword at Finan who caught it easily before swirling it ably. He jumped in the square but before he could position himself to face Osferth, he heard a familiar and warm laugh. He looked behind his brother in arms and held back a grin when he noticed Ingrith walking out of a street beside Sidgeflaed.
He observed his wife long enough for her to feel his dark eyes on her and finally look back at him. Her hand moved to grab Sidgeflaed’s arm and she nodded toward them, a few words Finan couldn’t hear escaping her mouth. When the two women didn’t walk further, he guessed they had decided to stay to watch them practice and Finan couldn’t help but grin.
“See, Aethelstan.” Finan said to the young bastard’s attention, however his eyes still lingered on his wife. “Baby Monk has never defeated me because I can predict his every move from simply watching him.”
“You might get someone jealous from staring at me too much, Finan.” Osferth muttered as he prepared himself.
Finan ignored his remark and faced his friend determinedly. He glanced at Ingrith before he moved forward, his sword whistling as it cut the air. Osferth countered easily, he might have never succeeded to put Finan on his arse ever before, it didn’t mean he hadn’t grown into a good warrior as well. But the Irishman had trained himself the monk and he could easily anticipate the direction his sword would take.
He glanced away an instant, glad to find Ingrith still staring at them. He felt himself grow bolder and started to wait until the last second to dodge and avoid a good hit. It probably was a childish thought, but he was determined to show his wife he wasn’t yet an old warrior despite years of treading battlefields.
Finan kept glancing at his wife, more and more captivated by the sight of Ingrith, until it tricked him. He hadn’t expected Osferth to push him away with his feet in the middle of his stomach. Finan stumbled back, one arm wrapping around his waist instinctively and the other suddenly too weak to stop Osferth’s sword. The Irishman dropped his weapon and Osferth hurried to raise his blade to his friend’s throat.
For a moment, the former monk looked at Finan in disbelief as they stood in the middle of the square, his sword a serious threat to the Irishman’s life if it had been a real one. “Today is a memorable day it seems.” Osferth eventually grinned proudly.
Finan grunted, the echo of Aethelstan’s laughter reaching his ears as he pushed the staff away from his neck. “The sun blinded me.” He grumbled.
The Irishman didn’t even dare to look toward his wife and shouted at Aethelstan to come back in the square to continue his practice. The young bastard couldn’t hold back his chuckle as he walked past Finan and retrieved his sword. Finan slumped into the bench facing the square and crossed his arms, unsure if he was more pissed because he had lost or because of his own foolishness.
“Is Finan the Agile a sore loser?”
Too taken in his sulking, Finan hadn’t heard Ingrith approach him. He looked up at her and shook his head with an exasperated sigh. “I’m not. But I’m certainly a fool.” Her amused face turned into a concerned one, her eyebrows furrowed. He grabbed her hand kindly to reassure her there was nothing to worry about. “I wanted to impress you.” He admitted with a soft smile.
A laugh escaped her and she sat beside him without releasing his hand. “If you want to impress me, you can try to cook without burning the dinner.” She teased him, bumping her shoulder into his.
Finan snorted before he brought their joined hands to his lips. “Thank God, you won’t ever be on the battlefield with me, darling.” He pointed out with a chuckle. “Ya’re a very distracting sight.”

i’m gonna be free and i’m gonna be fine
Missing moment in 5x01. Eadith and Ingrith talk.
read it on ao3
As night begins to fall and the people of Rumcofa gather in the hall, Eadith begins to wonder if she made a mistake in coming here. The easy camaraderie she’d once experienced with Finan and Sihtric and Uhtred and Osferth is gone now, buried beneath years of shared adventures and inside jokes she’ll never understand. They’ve moved to a new home, married, had children, and she…
“No husband?” Osferth had asked, because that’s what it always comes down to, isn’t it? No husband, yet, eh, Eadith? Better get a move on, before the good ones are all taken. What they really mean is, Better get married before you’re too old. Before you’re no good to anyone.
She doesn’t expect them to understand. She doesn’t fully understand herself. She doesn’t want to get married, because she doesn’t know a single married woman who can live as Eadith wants to live. The married women she knows have to make so much room in their lives for their husbands, for their children, that they have so little room left over for themselves.
So why Eadith is back here, in Mercia, trying not to look at a man who’d once asked her to marry him, she doesn’t know.
It isn’t that she wants to marry him or came here with the intention of taking him up on the offer he made years ago. Even if he wasn’t married now, even if he asked her to marry him again, her feelings would not change.
But she would be lying if she said Finan wasn’t part of the reason she came back here. If perhaps, he wasn’t a big part of the reason she’d come back here.
She just doesn’t know what she wants to do with that.
Almost as if reading her thoughts, his wife, Ingrith, materializes in front of her with a pitcher of ale. “So, Eadith,” she says cheerfully, “what is Frankia like?”
“Actually, it looks a lot like Mercia in many places,” Eadith says just as cheerfully. She has nothing against Ingrith. In fact, she’s happy for her and Finan. She just worries Ingrith won’t see it that way.
“So you were not homesick?” Ingrith asks, filling her cup.
Eadith smiles and shrugs. “I lost my home when I was young; I do not really know what it means to be homesick.”
Something in Ingrith’s expression softens. “So did I.”
“You’re not from Rumcofa?”
Ingrith shakes her head, setting the pitcher on a table. “It’s just a place where I ended up, like many people here.”
Eadith nods. “Do you like it here?”
Ingrith shrugs. “I like it because Finan is here.”
Eadith’s smile becomes tight. “How long have you been married?”
“Not long.” Ingrith’s eyes search hers for a moment. “I think he was waiting for you.”
Eadith holds Ingrith’s gaze. “Then he would have had a long wait.”
The corner of Ingrith’s mouth lifts in something like a smile. “So you didn’t come here to be with him again?”
“No,” Eadith says truthfully. “What happened between us…is over and done, as far as I’m concerned. Maybe he didn’t see it that way, but I did.”
Ingrith considers this. “Why did you come here, then?”
Eadith lifts her shoulders. “Honestly, I have no idea. I suppose I was hoping I’d figure it out by the time I got here.”
Ingrith gives her a real smile now. “It’s just a place you ended up,” she echoes from before.
Eadith smiles back. “Exactly.”
“There are worse places to end up.” Ingrith stands beside her, bumping her shoulder teasingly into Eadith’s. “And at least you’re in good company.”
Eadith raises her cup. “I’ll drink to that.”
Ingrith taps her cup against Eadith’s, both women grinning at each other.
“So,” Eadith asks, “what do you for fun in Rumcofa?”
.
Two hours later finds Eadith, Ingrith, and Sidgeflaed with their arms around each other’s shoulders, drunkenly singing as they try to dance their way out of the hall. Sidgeflaed’s children run in front of them, laughing and chasing each other.
“Sig,” Eadith says, because Sidgeflaed is a mouthful right now, “you have so many children.”
“So many,” Ingrith agrees.
“Too many,” Sidgeflaed says candidly, and the other two women collapse with laughter.
“I hope Finan and I have children,” Ingrith says when they’ve righted themselves. “But not that many.”
Eadith rests her head on her shoulder. “You’ll have beautiful children.”
“Yeah, if they take after Ingrith,” Sidgeflaed says, punctuating this jab at Finan with a belch.
Eadith and Ingrith laugh again, clutching each other as they stumble over a dip in the path.
“What about you, Eadith? Do you want children?” Ingrith asks.
“Not me,” Eadith says far too readily, and then braces herself, because she knows what’s coming.
What? No children? Are you sure? Maybe you just haven’t met the right man yet. You’ll change your mind.
But it never comes. Instead, Sidgeflaed says, “Good for you!” and, as if to prove her point, swoops down to scold one of her younger children for eating dirt.
Ingrith links her arm with Eadith’s and guides her to one of the guest houses. “This is where you’ll be staying.”
“It’s nice,” Eadith offers, even though she hasn’t seen the inside yet.
Ingrith looks at Eadith for a moment, swaying ever so slightly, and then she hugs Eadith warmly. “I’m glad you ended up here,” she sighs.
Eadith hugs her back, smiling. “So am I.”
She still doesn’t know what she’s doing here, but that doesn’t mean it was a mistake.
Far from it.

Finan x Ingrith | show up at my door
Tumblr media
Three times Finan showed up at Ingrith's door drunk; first time they were friends, second time they were something more, third time they were married.
A/N: this is basically three shorter one shots joined together. I really love these two and imagining them at different stages of their relationship.
Word Count: 2647
Warnings: No spoilers, just Finan being drunk and lots of fluff
‘Come join us Ingrith!’ Finan called out to her, stopping her as she walked down the street past Rumcofa’s alehouse on her way home. She paused and turned to him, a hopeful smile on his face as he looked up at her from where he sat at a table with Sihtric and Osferth. ‘Please,’ he added, slight pleading in his eyes.
Ingrith sighed. ‘Fine, I’ll join you for one drink.’
Finan’s face split into a wide grin, happy that she accepted his request, before shoving Osferth off the bench so that she could take his place beside him.
It had been a few months since Lord Uhtred and his men had come to Rumcofa, and slowly Ingrith, like the other residents, were getting used to their presence. She often saw them down by the river, overseeing the traders and collecting the tolls, patrolling the town and organising the Mercian guards, and, of course, at the ale house.
She had been wary of them at first, like most people had been, but the more she got to know them, the more she found she liked them. She had first been introduced to the rag tag group of warriors through Sihtric’s wife, Sidgeflaed, whom she had formed a friendship with soon after she had joined her husband in the town. Now she considered them all friends – Finan especially.
What had begun as one drink, soon spread to two, then three and then they began to lose count. By the time they left the alehouse, darkness had descended around them, the torches lining the streets having been lit and most people retiring to the warmth of their homes. As they walked home, Ingrith could tell she had, had one too many cups of ale, feeling a little dizzy and laughing far louder and more frequently than she would whilst sober.
However, the men must have been drinking for a while before she arrived as they were all in much worse shape, Osferth stumbling and Sihtric slurring his words. The worst by far was Finan who was barely conscious and was being supported under each arm by Sihtric and Osferth.
‘Good lord, he’s heavy,’ grumbled Osferth with a frown. ‘Why did the Irish bastard have to try and drink Rumcofa dry?’
‘He was trying to impress Ingrith,’ Sihtric smirked, getting her attention.
‘Why do you say that?’ she asked as she walked behind them as they struggled further down the quiet street.
Sihtric just shrugged, before groaning loudly at bearing all of Finan’s weight as Osferth let go to dive to the side of the street and throw up.
‘I thought you were supposed to be the sensible one?’ Ingrith asked him with a giggle. ‘Aren’t you a monk? Or is it common for monks to throw their guts up from ale?’
‘More common than you might think,’ Finan mumbled drunkenly, seeming to have regained consciousness, still being supported by a smirking Sihtric.
‘I am the sensible one,’ Osferth glared back at them, ‘but those two are a bad influence.’
‘Oh I don’t doubt that,’ Ingrith laughed back.
They carried on down the street until they reached Ingrith’s small home. She paused at the door, turning to say goodnight to the others, Finan once again passed out and being carried by an annoyed, tired looking Sihtric and a slightly ill looking Osferth.
‘Why don’t you leave Finan here?’ she asked, thinking with a frown that Sihtric and Osferth still had a very long way to go to take Finan back to his bed, which was the other side of the town near Uhtred’s hall. ‘You don’t really want to carry him all the way back, do you?’
‘Are you sure?’ Sihtric asked, seeming slightly unsure.
She nodded.
‘Thank you blessed Jesus and Mary,’ Osferth groaned, not waiting to see if Ingrith would change her mind before pulling Finan through her front door and dumping him rather unceremoniously onto her bed with Sihtric’s help. ‘Ingrith, you are an angel,’ the former monk grinned at her with relief.
‘I’m not so sure about that,’ she answered with a slight smirk. ‘Now you two get to bed – and I don’t want to hear you moaning about having sore heads in the morning. It was your own fault!’
They both bid her a goodnight and then left, closing the door behind them. She let out a sigh once they were gone, before setting about making a fire, the flickering flames bringing warmth into the small room.
She looked back at Finan who was sprawled out across her bed, light snores coming from him as he slept soundly. She couldn’t help but smile fondly as she walked over to the bed to check on him. He seemed so peaceful when asleep. She gently pushed his hair off his forehead, running her eyes over the features of his face which were illuminated by the flickering orange glow from the fire in the hearth.
‘Good night Finan,’ she sighed, a strange feeling in her chest.
Seeing as Finan was spread out across her whole bed, and he was too heavy for her to move, she curled up in some furs in the chair beside the fire. It was not the most comfortable of places to sleep, but she had slept in worse, and she fell asleep quick enough.
---
She woke the next morning to find Finan gone. It was already well into morning so she guessed he must have been needed by Uhtred, but she was still disappointed and slightly hurt that he would just leave without saying anything to her.
She went about her day as normal, nursing the slight hangover she had gained from the night before as she went. After running her various errands around the town, she returned to her house to find Finan waiting on her doorstep, shuffling his feet anxiously in the dirt.
He almost jumped when he saw her approaching, trying to hide (unsuccessfully) the bunch of flowers in his hand behind his back.
‘Hello Finan,’ she greeted him with a tentative smile.
‘Hey,’ he smiled nervously back, ‘I, err, wanted to apologise for last night. And to thank ya’ for putting me up, ya’ didn’t have to.’
‘I couldn’t let poor Sihtric and Osferth struggle to carry you all the way across town, could I?’ she scoffed with a roll of her eyes, coming to stand in front.
‘Right,’ he nodded, ‘erm, I got ya’ these.’ He held out the bench of flowers towards her, which she took after a moment’s hesitation. ‘To say thank you.’
‘They are beautiful. Although next time I’d rather you not pass out black out drunk in my bed.’
‘Yeah, I’ll bear that in mind.’
There was an awkward moment’s pause as they both stood on her doorstep, looking at each other, waiting for the other to leave or say something.
‘Well then I-‘
‘I guess, I better-‘
They began to talk over each other, both stopping to let the other speak.
‘No, you go-’
‘No, it’s nothing-’
They both looked at each other before bursting out laughing. Ingrith shook her head, looking back down at the flowers he had given her.
‘I had a great time last night,’ she finally said, meeting his eyes which softened at her words. ‘I don’t think I have ever laughed that much.’
‘I had a lovely night too.’
‘I’m surprised you can remember it,’ she smirked back at him.
He chuckled at that. ‘True, but I… I like spending time with ya’, Ingrith.’
She felt her cheeks begin to burn. ‘Good,’ she answered, ‘because I like spending time with you too. When you’re not too drunk to stand, that is.’ He smiled broadly at her, crinkles forming in the corners of his eyes. ‘I’ll see you around Finan,’ she said softly with a warm smile. ‘Now, get lost I am busy,’ she grinned, giving him a playful shove.

Ingrith was sat at home, mending a rip in one of her dresses by the light of the fire and the twinkling candle beside her, when a knock came from her front door. She got up to answer it with a frown, wondering who could be visiting her so late in the evening.
She opened the door to find Finan learning heavily against the door frame.
‘Finan? What in Odin’s name are you doing here?’
He smiled broadly at the sight of her, pushing himself off the doorframe and swaying violently. ‘Ingrith! I… I just wanted to talk to ya’,’ he mumbled, his accent thick from the obvious amounts of ale he had drunk.
‘Are you drunk, again?’ she asked, slightly exasperated although a slight smile tugged at her lips.
‘No,’ he answered defensively before giving her a sheepish smile, ‘well, maybe.’
‘Go to bed, Finan, I will talk to you in the morning.’
‘No!’ he insisted. ‘I have things I need to say, and… and they can’t wait.’
‘Alright,’ she answered uncertainly, opening the door wider to allow him to come inside. ‘You better come inside then.’
He followed her inside, watching her intently. Once she had shut the door behind them, he came to stand close in front of her, swaying on his feet.
‘You are so beautiful,’ he breathed.
‘And you are drunk.’
‘No! Well… yes, I am – but, I mean it! Ingrith, you are beautiful… and you are… funny…’
‘Finan,’ she sighed, not wanting him to say something whilst drunk he would later regret.
There had been something growing between them; soft looks and small touches, seeking the other out whilst in a crowd. She had grown to trust him completely. And yet, she wasn’t sure what this thing they had was, or where it would lead.
‘Stay here tonight,’ she added before he had time to argue with her. ‘You are in no fit state to walk home on your own.’
‘Are ya’ worried about me?’ he smirked down at her.
‘Yes, I am,’ she answered simply. ‘Now, come on. Get some sleep, we can talk in the morning.’
He sighed as if he was defeated before nodding. She watched as his shaking hands tried to unlace his boots, finally batting his hands aside to remove them herself. He climbed on top of the bed, thankfully not spreading out across the entire mattress this time, allowing for her to climb in beside him.
‘Why do you drink so much?’
‘Perhaps I just like taste?’ he murmured, his eyes beginning to look heavy as he fought to continue to look at her.
‘As long as it is just that. That you’re not drowning your sorrows,’ she murmured in reply, studying his face which was only inches from hers. ‘I hope you know I’m always here for you.’
‘I do know that,’ he sighed, his eye lids finally closing. ‘But I wasn’t drinking to forget. I was drinking so I would have the courage to tell ya’ I love you.’
‘Finan,’ she gasped. ‘I-‘ her words died on her tongue as light snores filled the room, Finan falling peacefully asleep opposite her.
---
She woke up before Finan, getting up and fetching some fresh water from the well and beginning to prepare them both some breakfast. She kept glancing back at him as she worked, thinking back on his words the previous night, wondering if he had meant them. She wanted his words to be true; she cared for him more than anyone and she felt they had a connection like none she had ever shared before.
She heard him groan behind her as he slowly began to wake up. She couldn’t help but bite her lip nervously as she took a cup of water and went to sit beside the bed.
‘Morning,’ she murmured hesitantly, giving him a soft smile as he blinked blearily up at you. ‘This is becoming rather a habit.’
‘Sorry,’ he groaned, looking confusedly around him like he couldn’t remember how he had ended up there. ‘I didn’t… shit I just turned up at your door, didn’t I?’
‘Yep,’ she smiled, a slight chuckle leaving her lips as she watched him screw up his face in embarrassment. ‘I don’t mind really.’
He gave her a weak smile before his face dropped and his eyes widened as a realisation hit him. ‘Shit! Did I…? Did I tell ya’ that I love you?’
Her heart fell as she nodded. It was probably just something he said whilst drunk – of course he hadn’t really meant it.
‘What did you say back?’ he asked suddenly, anxiety lining his features.
‘You passed out before I got the chance.’
‘Oh,’ he answered sheepishly, before nervously meeting her eyes once more. ‘But… if you had… answered, what would you have said?’
She looked into his eyes, so full of hope and longing, and realised that he had meant what he had said, and that she loved him too. She placed her hand on the back of his neck and drew him towards her, kissing him gently and lovingly, trying to convey all her feelings in a way words couldn’t accurately express.

Ingrith was once again sitting beside the fire in her home – which she now shared with Finan. She sat looking into the flames, waiting for her husband to return from the alehouse. She would have joined him and the others, however she had spent her evening with Sidgeflaed, helping her to look after her many children and catching up on all the local gossip.
A loud knock came from the door, accompanied by lots of giggling. She crossed the room and opened the door to find Finan, Osferth and Aethelstan giggling uncontrollably beside a bemused looking Sihtric.
‘Shhhhhh!’ Finan hushed his friends dramatically, his finger pressed to his lips. ‘We have to be quiet, Ingrith can’t know I’m drunk.’
She rolled her eyes at them. ‘Finan,’ she said sternly to get his attention, her husband immediately straightening up and trying his best to look sober.
‘Good evening, my beautiful wife,’ he grinned, coming forward to kiss her cheek, his breath smelling of ale.
‘I thought you were only going for a couple of drinks?’ she frowned at the three men, ignoring Finan’s flattery. ‘You will be a bad influence on Aethelstan!’ she added, glancing sympathetically at the young teenager who would definitely have a terrible hangover the next day. ‘I will tell Uhtred.’
‘Uhtred won’t care,’ Sihtric dismissed with a smirk.
‘Then maybe I will tell your wife!’ Ingrith shot back, Sihtric’s face immediately falling – his wife’s wrath obviously more of a threat than Uhtred’s.
‘Now, off to bed the lot of you – and make sure Aethelstan gets home okay!’
They all nodded, Osferth putting his arm around Aethelstan as they continued down the street. She shut the door and turned to see Finan already sitting on the edge of the bed, clumsily attempting to untie his boots.
‘Let me do it,’ she sighed, going over and kneeling in front of him.
‘Ya’ aren’t really mad, are ya’?’ he asked worriedly.
‘No,’ she answered, a smile tugging at the edge of her lips, ‘although next time you go out and have fun, you might invite me?’ He smiled lovingly up at her as she threw his boots aside and got him a cup of water. ‘Here, drink this.’
He took the water from her and drank a few mouthfuls before putting it aside. He pulled her closer towards him, so she stood between his legs and wrapped his arms around her middle, his head resting against her stomach.
‘I love ya’ so much,’ he mumbled against the fabric of her dress, his warms wrapping tighter around her.
‘I love you too,’ she replied with a small sigh, running her fingers through his hair. ‘Now let’s go to bed and get some sleep, shall we?’ she whispered, leaning down to kiss the top of his head.
