Ellis Marsalis, Jr.

Ellis Louis Marsalis Jr. (November 14, 1934 – April 1, 2020) was an American jazz pianist and educator. Active since the late 1940s, Marsalis came to greater attention in the 1980s and 1990s as the patriarch of a musical family, with sons Branford and Wynton rising to international acclaim.

Life and career

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Marsalis was the son of Florence (née Robertson) and Ellis Marsalis Sr., a businessman and social activist. Marsalis and his wife Delores Ferdinand had six sons: Branford (born in 1960), Wynton (born in 1961), Ellis III (born in 1964), Delfeayo, Mboya (born in 1971), and Jason (born in 1977). Branford, Wynton, Delfeayo, and Jason also became jazz musicians. Ellis III is a poet, photographer, and network engineer.

Marsalis played saxophone during high school but switched to piano while studying classical music at Dillard University, graduating in 1955. He later attended graduate school at Loyola University New Orleans. In the 1950s and 1960s he worked with Ed Blackwell, Cannonball Adderley, Nat Adderley, and Al Hirt. During the 1970s, he taught at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. His students have included Terence Blanchard, Harry Connick Jr., Donald Harrison, Kent Jordan, Marlon Jordan, and Nicholas Payton.

Though he recorded almost twenty of his own albums and was featured on many discs with such musicians as David "Fathead" Newman, Eddie Harris, Marcus Roberts, and Courtney Pine, he shunned the spotlight to focus on teaching. Marsalis's didactic approach, combined with an interest in philosophy, encouraged his students to make discoveries in music on their own, through experiment and very careful listening.

As a leading educator at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, the University of New Orleans, and Xavier University of Louisiana, Ellis influenced the careers of countless musicians, as well as his four musician sons: Wynton, Branford, Delfeayo and Jason. Marsalis retired from UNO in 2001. In May 2007, Marsalis received an honorary doctorate from Tulane University for his contributions to jazz and musical education.

Marsalis was inducted into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2018.

The Ellis Marsalis Center for Music at Musicians' Village in New Orleans is named in his honor. In 2010, The Marsalis Family released a live album titled Music Redeems which was recorded at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC as part of the Duke Ellington Jazz Festival. All proceeds from the sale of the album go directly to the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music.

Marsalis and his sons were group recipients of the 2011 NEA Jazz Masters Award.

Marsalis was a Brother of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., initiated in 1953 at Epsilon Alpha Chapter, Dillard University.

Marsalis was a Brother of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia fraternity, initiated into Delta Epsilon Chapter (University of Louisiana-Lafayette) in 1965. In 2015, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia announced that Marsalis has been named Sinfonia's 24th Man of Music, the highest honor given by the fraternity to a member, for advancing the cause of music in America through performance, composition or any other musical activity.

On April 1, 2020, Marsalis died at the age of 85 from pneumonia brought by COVID-19.

2017 Favorite Fic Recs! Part 1

This year went by so quickly and had its ups and downs. One of the best things about it was all the awesome new fic, especially in my favorite fandoms. Just wanted to share the love before ringing in the new year! + What I’m Trying to Hide by invisibledaemon (GotG, Gamora/Peter) The Guardians get hit with truth serum from a flower. This has everything I want in a GotG fic: humor, adventure, and a major focus on Starmora! Everyone’s in character and the pacing is perfect. Very sweet and entertaining! + No More Evil Dads by Pikapegasus (GotG, Gamora/Peter) Peter can’t sleep, thanks to a recurring nightmare featuring his a-hole biodad - luckily, Gamora is there to help. This is a fascinating, angsty fic with well-written, dark visuals, and I love the h/c element in this. It’s brutal in the best way, and has a happy ending! + all the good love by glorious_spoon (GotG, Gamora/Peter, rated M) Gamora has to deal with the aftermath of getting hit with sex pollen while she’s with Peter. The honesty and character study is fantastic, it showcases Gamora’s virtues and flaws and adds depth to the sexual aspect - which is also hot! + Escape Plans by Kate_MacKay (GotG, Gamora/Peter) The Guardians do whatever they can to find Peter and Mantis, after they’re captured by the Kree. This fic has an amazing blend of action, suspense, and romance. I was on the edge of my seat while reading it, and it features one of my favorite tropes: Gamora saving Peter. + If You Were Here Beside Me, Instead of In New York by GeckoGirl89 (Friends, Rachel/Joey) Rachel visits Joey in L.A. after breaking things off with Ross for good. I’m a sucker for this type of fic and it handles all of the complicated relationship issues SO well. Rachel and Joey’s interaction is adorable, and has an added layer of angst, which I love. There’s also a bonus of awesome!Ross, which I was pleased to see. This is a post-series headcanon I gladly welcomed. + Closer Than You Think by PantsTerror (Zero Escape, Diana/Sigma, Explicit) Diana confronts Sigma before the Decision Game. This is intense and hot, and has a beautiful, lyrical quality to it. I absolutely love Diana pursuing Sigma in fic, and that she can feel something between them, even though she doesn’t remember him, she knows him. It’s amazing. + prelude to a kiss by archetypically (GotG, Gamora/Peter) Gamora and Peter keep getting interrupted before they kiss, until they don’t. I love the mingled sense of amusement and adorable nature, it feels both innocent and mature at the same time. It’s cute and emotional, and Rocket makes a great cameo in it. + Woo Me Until the Sun Comes Up by poprocks (GotG, Gamora/Peter, M) Peter and Gamora try to get some alone time on the Quadrant (post-Vol. 2) - key word try. This is one of those fics which I immediately adopted as a new headcanon. I can totally see this scenario playing out. I love how forward Gamora is in this, and there’s bonus dialogue from the other characters which is hilarious and fitting. + Wish you out of the woods by SevlinRipley (Boy Meets World, Cory/Shawn) Shawn spends the night at Cory’s place. I absolutely love the character work in this, how both of them have their issues and insecurities, and this addresses them so well. There’s also an intimate, intense vibe to their interaction, like they talk to each other in a way they couldn’t with anyone else. Beautifully written angst! + Bounties and Love by Doctor_Anthony (GotG, Gamora/Peter, rated M) After Ego, Gamora and Peter are kidnapped by a bounty hunter, and the other Guardians race to save them (post-Vol. 2 AU, Yondu lives.) This is a thrilling combination of action, suspense, political intrigue, with bonus Starmora. I really enjoyed reading this!

On March 11, 2019, the Trump Administration released its Fiscal Year 2020 Budget Summary. The White House is proposing more than $9 billion in cuts to critical housing programs. DATELINE Saturday December 19, 2020. Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, New York. I have moved to New York City, where I was born. to escape the inpending death toll rural Lycoming County will experience within the next few weeks. After the virus is controlled, I will return to beautiful Williamsport Pennsylvania and its architectural treasures on February 14th. I am currently in the hospital to take care of a series of too long neglected health problems anticipating that I will receive the coronavirus vaccine shortly.

I took this self portrait in June 2015 of the less than friendly disability entrance to Trump’s International luxury hotel and apartment condominium complex at Columbus Circle. Following the principles of unversal design would have been preferable if Trump’s de facto instructions were not based on stairs and hoopla.. I waited an unnecesryily long time for the elevator and became soaked as a consequenc. Hell of a way to treat a cancer patient returning to my friend’s place after therapy. This is how The New York Times described the building in April, 1996: “Fancier than Trump Tower. Glitzier than the Trump Taj Mahal. Pricier than Trump Palace or Trump Parc. Its glossy brochure trumpets Trump International as ‘the most important new address in the world.’

How the outcome of two senate races in Georgia will affect global architecture commisions

Let us start the analysis of the Georgia January 5th election with the big picture.

The big picture: As of yesrerday, 313,797 children, women and men have died from the crnavirus according to the Centers for Disease Control base in Atlanta. On the glass is half filled for architects, take joy from President elect Joe Biden’s selection of Rep. Marcia Fudge to run the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Here is Rep. Fudge from her official website: “Congresswoman Marcia L. Senator David Perdue, Incumbent Republican

Wikipedia – David Alfred Perdue Jr. (/pərˈduː/; born December 10, 1949) is an American businessman and politician. A member of the Republican Party, he has served as the senior United States Senator for Georgia since 2015.

After 12 years as a management consultant, Perdue became the senior vice president for Reebok. He later joined PillowTex, a North Carolina textile company.[2][3] He subsequently served as CEO of Dollar General.

Perdue ran for U.S. Senate in 2014, defeating Democratic nominee Michelle Nunn. He is running for reelection in 2020 against Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff. As neither candidate received more than 50% of the vote in the November 3 election, they face each other in a January 2021 runoff election. After the November election, Perdue called for the resignation of Georgia’s top elections official and claimed without evidence that there were unspecified “failures” in the election. He later supported a lawsuit by Trump allies seeking to overturn the election results.[5]

Perdue was linked to the 2020 Congressional insider trading scandal for allegations of STOCK Act violations. The allegations arose after he sold stocks before the 2020 stock market crash using knowledge speculated to be from a closed Senate meeting After reviews by the Senate Ethics Committee and the U.S. Department of Justice, Perdue was not charged with any crimes. The Justice Department closed its inquiry in mid-2020.

Democratic challenger Jon Ossoff

N.B. Two years ago I doanted $18 to Jon Ossoff’s campaign for the House of Representatives from Georogia. The election was to fill a vacant seat that happened when Re. Azar left thye House to become a an awful Secretary of Health and Humman Services for President Trump. The number 18 has spritual signifcance because the Herew alphabet applies numbers to lwtters. The Hebrew word for life [chai] is 18. In synagogues, i ndoners add 18 to their conytibutons to their synagogue. Also works for causes. Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 and 2 Review: X Marks The Spot

Re-releasing older video games in modern-era collections is something of a trend these days, but a lot of developers have been ignoring older releases in favor of touching up newer games with increased resolutions and higher-quality textures. It's kind of a shame, because some of gaming's best moments aren't found in last-generation titles, but instead in the retro releases that paved the way for modern gaming experiences. Capcom knows this, and that's one of the reasons why they've blessed retro gaming fans with releases such as the Mega Man X Legacy Collections 1 and 2. Like the Mega Man Legacy Collections that came before them, these new collections are hands-down the best way to experience the X series' greatest moments, plus they're rounded out with a challenging new boss gauntlet gameplay mode and a considerable assortment of added bonuses.

A Full Decade of Mega Man X Releases

Seeing as how the Mega Man series just celebrated its 30th anniversary, the crew at Capcom have been busy creating polished, modern collections featuring all of the series' biggest hits. I previously reviewed both Mega Man Legacy collections, and both wound up being excellent ways to relive the Blue Bomber's early history, starting with the first 1987 Mega Man release and running all the way through the 2010 release of Mega Man 10. The new Mega Man X Legacy collections follow the same pattern, except they represent the more modern X series of games that kicked off in 1993 and ran through 2004: Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 contains Mega Man X, X2, X3, and X4, while the Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 contains Mega Man X5, X6, X7, and X8.

As such, deciding between the two collections will likely come down to which Mega Man X era players are most familiar with: the first X collection offers up to the first two SNES and PlayStation era releases, while the second X collection covers up to the final two PlayStation 2 era releases. Mega Man X7 and X8 in particular weren't very well-received at the time, mostly due to X7's wonky 3D implementation and X8's lackluster use of 2.5D effects, but the rest of the games offer largely-similar 2D experiences with gradually increasing fidelity and gameplay enhancements.

Timeless Sidescrolling Action

By now it should go without saying, but I'll say it anyway: Mega Man games, and in my mind Mega Man X games specifically, offer up some of the finest platforming action to be seen in their respective eras. Mega Man had been kicking around for six years before the X series ever made its debut, and in that time Capcom managed to find a perfect balance between shooting, platforming, weapons, upgrades, and overall difficulty, culminating in a gameplay formula that would eventually become widely emulated through decades of new releases. There's just something addictive about making careful progress through stages, seeking out power-ups, and organizing the downfall of evil robotic empires through specific use of imaginative weaponry — and the X games present that timeless style in a package that's better looking and far less challenging than previous 8-bit series releases.

As might be expected, the standard Mega Man gameplay loop can be found in all of the newer X titles: players will start in an introductory stage only to be confronted by a powerful force, and will afterward be tasked with taking down eight different bosses set across eight different stages before taking on the marathon-style final stage and ultimate boss battle. Though that pattern largely holds true with X7 and X8, players will note that the 3D-enabled segments of X7 do tend to break up the usual sidescrolling formula, and serve as one of the only weak points of Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 — fortunately, the first Mega Man X Legacy Collection is nothing but two-dimensional, sprite-based goodness. Players will also note that both collections include the new Rookie Hunter mode, which essentially drops the level of challenge by cutting all incoming damage in half, plus it prevents instant deaths from bottomless pits and spike traps in Mega Man X4 through X8.

Extra Extra

Rounding out the new Mega Man X Legacy Collection packages is a huge variety of extra goodies: both games feature a Hunter Medals menu listing that offers up a number of special achievements for completing various tasks, like using all powered-up attacks for each weapons or for diving far enough into the game's Museum feature. Both games also feature the X Challenge, either Vol. 1 or Vol. 2 depending on which collection was picked up, allowing players to go after all of the X-series bosses back-to-back in challenging two-on-one battles, complete with leaderboard rankings for bragging rights. Beyond that, the collections also feature smooth anti-aliasing and CRT screen filters, interchangeable border wallpapers, options to adjust screen size, and even a special in-game manual explaining various controls, though players unfortunately won't find any digital recreations of the original print game manuals.

All of this is topped off with the aforementioned and remarkably robust Museum menu, which features an art gallery stuffed with concept art and character data; a music player with tracks from each of the games; a product gallery showcasing old promotional materials, comic covers, and collectible items; original Japanese- and English-language trailers for each of the games; and finally, the 25-minute animated feature known as The Day of Sigma, originally created as a bonus prologue to Mega Man Maverick Hunter X for the PlayStation Portable. Completionists can even toggle between the original English and Japanese versions of each game on the main menu with the push of a button, allowing them to note the difficulty changes and altered enemy placements between the two different releases.

X Rocks, Man

Ultimately, both Mega Man X Legacy Collections 1 and 2 nail exactly what modern-era collections of retro video game titles should be: a compendium of everything the series has to offer, including the base games, fresh new tweaks, added bonuses, trivia, trailers, and more. There's really no stone left unturned with either Mega Man X Legacy Collection, making them perfect for longtime series fans or for gamers new to the Mega Man X formula.

This review is based on a PlayStation 4 download code provided by the publisher. Mega Man X Legacy Collections 1 and 2 will be available in retail and digital stores on July 24 for $39.99 each. The games have been rated T for Teen by the ESRB.
