♫ - describe my muse’s singing voice
low and gritty, dark-timbred but brightly toned. husky when loud and low, pure when soft and high, powerful and projected at next to all times. typically in-tune, though cracking at the cadences, constantly tonally off-course when he gets too excited — pitch and quality are for people who are trying, not just having fun, after all. i always use this song when i describe how i imagine his singing voice :,)
✎ - describe my muse’s taste in music/literature
music: heavily rhythmic and using lots of polyrhythms. either cluttered with beats and tunes and melodies, or stripped down to its very core. gritty, emotional, rough, and honest. a particular preference for industrial tunes, with tech metal as a guilty side-pleasure. something like this or this
literature: he isn’t terribly interested in literature, but in verses when he can read/timelines where he’s learned, he has a huge guilty pleasure for dark romance. tragedy, operatic endings, tales of love and loss and vengeance. preferential of a more simplistic writing style, none of that overly-wordy gibberish. also has a particular love for the mythological and fantastical; especially loves when the two overlap

ON A DRINK AND A PRAYER
by Réginald-Jérôme de Mans
It’s simplistic to suggest that everyone needs to have a signature drink, one go-to cocktail they [apparently using the third person plural as a substitute genderless pronoun is accepted usage now, written gritting my teeth] order everywhere and every time. (And yes, there is a dinosaur in the room, but I’m not going to name him or his infamously shaken drink.) Attempts at that suggestion are attempts at an ersatz sophistication. We learn more as we live more, so we move out of that early period of only ordering one thing, or only knowing how to make one drink. Different times, different places, different moods can all justify different choices – or sticking with a single drink if it really is what you like, whether that’s a club soda, a light beer, or a China Clipper cocktail, the last of which I first encountered in my reissued 1949 Esquire’s Handbook for Hosts, a guilty pleasure that also introduced me to the Maiden’s Prayer, a go-to for me along with the sidecar or the martini.
The rather coy name didn’t originate with the drink itself: La prière d’une vierge is a 19th-century piece for piano by a Polish composer, translated and turned into the mawkish poem A Maiden’s Prayer by a minor English author. A recent profile on the Esquire website revisiting the Maiden’s Prayer cocktail informs us that by the early 20th century, the poem’s name had been given to a drink recipe. Who knew poems were the memes of the last century?
I’ve mentioned the Handbook for Hosts before: it’s an entertaining time capsule to a time when entertainment seemed at once both more raffish and more refined. It has a litany of recipes for cocktails with baroque names, from the aforementioned China Clipper to the Brown University (which surprisingly is not equal parts privilege, aimlessness and liberal complacency shaken with a dash of bitters). The recipe for the Maiden’s Prayer is tagged with the parenthetical “Served on the edge of the couch.” As Esquire’s recent revisionist profile points out, that’s a rather unsavory notation implying that the drink (1) was intended to be served to women with (2) the intention of loosening their morals.
Nonetheless, the 1940s recipe (1/3 gin, 1/3 Cointreau and 1/3 lemon juice, with a dash of orange bitters) doesn’t make for a stereotypically feminine drink (and a drink designed with the sexist aim of seducing women would only play on stereotype). It’s not particularly sweet, fruity, or creamy. And fans of pulp detective novels know that Jazz Age roofies already existed in the form of chloral hydrate, known as a Mickey Finn.
Before discovering its history and dubious background, I had developed a taste for it myself despite being a man and not a maiden. A taste, that is, for my own version of it, made with lime juice instead of lemon juice. I like the taste of limes better. Apparently limes have less sugar than lemons, which makes the drink less sweet anyway. After a period of not making them I started again recently but found something was off. The drink seemed one-dimensionally tart. To try to flesh it out, I tried adding other bitters, Angostura or Peychaud’s, until the result looked as pink and opaque as Pepto-Bismol, and only marginally more drinkable. I called it a Whore’s Prayer. And, I confess, drank it anyway, with chagrin.
Then it hit me. I realized that I’d made my earlier versions of the drink with the only orange bitters I used to have, blood orange bitters. In the meantime, I’d run out and replaced them with standard orange bitters. I switched back to using a generous dash of blood orange bitters and the improvement was immediate, yielding a drink that was pleasantly sour, but with body, the libatory equivalent of Kat Dennings.
It’s far from any kind of accessible knockout drink, despite the checkered past of its earlier incarnation. I prefer my adaptation – more world -savvy and less virginal than the maiden, but still a beautiful, personable companion for slow evening enjoyment:
The Maiden’s Prayer (around the block a few times version): 1/3 gin, 1/3 Cointreau, 1/3 fresh-squeezed lime juice, generous dash blood orange bitters. Shake with cracked ice, pour into cocktail glass.
Cheers.
