And A Good Friday Was Had By All Bruce Dawe
You men there, keep those women back and God Almighty he laid down on the crossed timber and Old Silenus my offsider looked at me as if to say nice work for soldiers, your mind’s not your own once you sign that dotted line Ave Caesar and all that malarkey Imperator Rex
well this Nazarene didn’t make it any easier really – not like the ones who kick up a fuss so you can do your block and take it out on them Silenus held the spikes steady and I let fly with the sledge-hammer, not looking on the downswing trying hard not to hear over the women’s wailing the bones give way the iron shocking the dumb wood.
Orders is orders, I said after it was over nothing personal you understand – we had a drill-sergeant once thought he was God but he wasn’t a patch on you
then we hauled on the ropes and he rose in the hot air like a diver just leaving the springboard, arms spread so it seemed over the whole damned creation over the big men who must have had it in for him and the curious ones who’ll watch anything if it’s free with only the usual women caring anywhere and a blind man in tears.

On today's episode of "sports AUs that cater specifically to my interests and that I won't ever have the spoons to write":
JoeNicky synchronized divers AU
Hear me out
Diving is, at its core, an individual sport. It's just you and your ability to throw yourself acrobatically into the water vs a panel of judges, gravity, and a bunch of other people who are there for the same reason
But together with individual competitions, there's also synchronized diving, with two athletes from the same team diving side by side
So please imagine. Nicky and Joe being pro divers from the same country who are peak Competitive Bastards™️ about each other. In the individual competitions it's like all the others barely exist, as long as they come up higher than that guy it's ok
(They're so busy trying to outcompete the other that they constantly get better until they’re basically top ten in the world, go figure)
People think that if they were left alone in the same room they would murder each other, and then a coach (Andy? Quynh? Oscar Bertone? Who knows) has the brightest idea of the century
Put them together for the synchro competition
Shock, bafflement and scandal: "Why would you pair me with that guy?!"
"You are of similar height and also your styles are very similar, you're just too blinded by your pride to see it"
Listen. They may not stand each other, but they're still Competitive Bastards™️
They are NOT losing the chance for a medal just because they have to work with their mortal enemy
So they dive (heh) into the 'synching our diving routines until we look like a single person' training
And that's where it all goes topsy-turvy because. They are both Intense™️ in a way nobody else has ever really understood, not even the other divers in the team. And turns out they also have a similar sense of humour ("Di Genova, a sense of humour? Who would have thought"). And similar interests outside of the sport. And and and.
And they're training in the tiniest Speedos ever invented and I never said he wasn't attractive but NOW I also like him as a person and it's becoming A FUCKING PROBLEM
And then they compete, and they are ridiculously good, literally breathing in sync, what the fuck
(And then they kiss and become the most feared sync diving team in history)
(While still trying to outcompete the other in the individual competitions but now it feels like foreplay)
Not sure if the springboard or the platform would be more suited, I honestly think it could be either
Springboard is either 1 m (not an Olympic specialty) or 3 m (all international competitions including Olympics), it's 'funnier' because bouncy and also the difficulty of doing a lot of acrobatics in a relatively small aerial space before you get to the water
The platform is 10 m high and it's unhinged imo but also. Those two are canonically unhinged enough to not flinch at throwing themselves down into a pool at that height from a handstand position

Stevenson (Right and background); Cover for "Imre" (Left)
1858 – Edward Irenaeus Prime-Stevenson (d.1942) was an American author. He used the pseudonym Xavier Mayne.
Edward Prime-Stevenson was born in Madison, New Jersey. His father was a Presbyterian minister and a school principal; his mother was the offspring of a family of men of letters.
After studying law, Stevenson decided to become a writer and a journalist. In 1901 he moved to Europe, living in Florence and Lausanne, where he died of a heart attack in 1942.
In 1896 Stevenson published The Square of Sevens, and the Parallelogram: An Authoritative Method of Cartomancy with a Prefatory Note by Robert Antrobus that was supposedly written in 1735. However, it is believed that he was the author.
In 1906, under the pseudonym Xavier Mayne, Stevenson published the homosexually themed novel Imre: A Memorandum, but fifteen years earlier, Stevenson had published another milestone work, Left to Themselves (1891), a young adult novel described by its author as "homosexual in essence," the first such book ever published; and in 1908 a sexology study, The Intersexes, a defense of homosexuality from a scientific, legal, historical, and personal perspective.

1954 – The New Mexico Supreme Court rules that emission is not necessary to prove sodomy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1960 – Olympic gold-medal winning diver and gay rights activist Greg Louganis was born in El Cajon, California on this date. Of Samoan/Swedish descent, Louganis first won a silver medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. He was considered a favorite for two gold medals in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow but was denied the chance with the American boycott of the games that year. Louganis won gold medals in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, two gold medals in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. He is widely regarded as the greatest Olympic diver of all time.
In the 1988 Seoul Olympics, he suffered a concussion after hitting his head on the springboard during the preliminary rounds while performing a reverse 2½ pike. He completed the preliminaries despite his injury, and went on to repeat a similar dive during the finals, earning the gold medal.
In 1994, after much speculation, Louganis announced he was gay and went on to perform in the Gay Games. In 1995, Louganis's autobiography co-written with Eric Marcus, entitled Breaking the Surface,it which he revealed he is HIV positive, was published. A 1997 made-for-television movie, "Breaking the Surface: The Greg Louganis Story," was aired on national television in the United States.
He also produced a video diary called Looking To the Light, which picked up where Breaking the Surface left off. In the years since his diagnosis was made public, Louganis has been an outspoken HIV awareness advocate.
In the October/November 2010 issue of ABILITY Magazine, Louganis stated that the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy is "absurd," "unconstitutional," and a "witch-hunt." He added that "gay men and women have been serving this country for years. . . [it's] basically encouraging people who are serving our country to lie to each other."
Since retiring from competitive diving, Louganis has done some acting, most notably appearing in an off-Broadway production of the Paul Rudnick play "Jeffrey." As a hobby, he competes at the top level of dog agility with his Jack Russell Terriers.
In 2013, Louganis announced his engagement to marry his boyfriend Johnny Chaillot, a paralegal. They married in October 2013.

1983 – Brian Michael Smith is an American actor known for his recurring role OWN's Queen Sugar as well as appearances on NBC's Chicago P.D., HBO's Girls and Showtime thriller Homeland.
Brian Michael Smith was born and raised in Ann Arbor, MI. He was raised by his mother, Ingrid Smith, an event planner and Ford Motor Company employee, with the support of his close-knit family. He and his mother spent his early years living with aunts, cousins and adopted brother.
Although assigned-female at birth, he self-identified and was perceived as male throughout his childhood. He challenged pressures to conform to his assigned role through performance and athletics.
While attending Ann Arbor Pioneer High School he played Defensive End and Fullback on the Boys Football team during the Fall and set records in throws and pole vaulting on the Girls Track & Field team in the Spring.
On September 17, 1999 during a game at Traverse City, became the First Female* Athlete to score a Varsity touchdown in the State of Michigan.
He studied acting and video production at Kent State University. Upon graduation he began teaching drama and media literacy to teens until moving to New York City to pursue his career in acting.
In 2017, Michael booked the role of Officer Antoine "Toine" Wilkins, on OWN's Queen Sugar. Toine also happens to be a Transgender man.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1990 – In 2012, Alex Morse was elected at 22 years old as mayor as Mayor of Holyoke, Massachussets.
A Holyoke native who became active in the community early on, he joined the city's Youth Commission at age 12. "I've always been very proactive and mature, and incredibly focused. Because I can talk intelligently and passionately about Holyoke...my age was never an obstacle. It never really mattered."
Morse is also gay. He started Holyoke High School's chapter of the Gay-Straight Alliance and founded the city's first GLBTQ non-profit organization, Holyoke For All, which hosts an annual "pride prom" and offers support groups, advocacy training, and scholarship assistance for GLBTQ youth.
When he took office on Jan. 3, 2013, he became the country's youngest openly gay mayor -- a label that, Morse said, is even less significant than his age. "I've been open and honest about [my sexuality]," he said. "I haven't found it to be problematic. Whenever you claim something as your own, no one can use it against you."

Jan Kasper Klein was a Dutch gym teacher who hid seventeen Jews in his small home during the German occupation of Holland.
Jan was born in the picturesque town of Delft, Holland in 1912 to a Christian family. Naturally athletic, Jan excelled in multiple sports as a child and as he grew older began to coach. After he completed his schooling, Jan became a high school gym teacher and gymnastics coach. He was longtime friends with Bob Denneboom, a Jewish diver who became Dutch champion of platform diving from the three meter springboard.
Tumblr media
As Bob settled into Jan’s humble cottage, the Nazi deportation of Dutch Jews intensified. Bob had a large extended family who were in imminent danger of arrest. Despite the small size of Jan’s home, he invited Bob’s entire family to take refuge there. The Denneboom clan included Jan’s parents, sister and brother-in-law, and various cousins, fifteen people in all. Including Bob and Mischa, Jan was harboring seventeen Jews in a very quiet neighborhood where everybody knew everybody else’s business. He managed to prevent his neighbors from finding out what was going on by making sure his Jewish guests maintained complete silence. Some of them huddled in the house behind drawn curtains; others stayed in the attic and an additional secret hiding spot underneath the roof. The one giveaway was the large amount of bread people saw Jan carrying, so he told his neighbors that he was starting a breadcrumb business.
It was exceedingly difficult for eighteen people to live together in the small cottage, and Jan’s mother offered her home in a bombed-out section of the Hague as a second sanctuary. Several of the Jews traveled there in the dead of night and Mrs. Klein fed them and provided for their needs, as did Jan for the Jews he was hiding in Amsterdam. Jan forged relationships with members of the Dutch Resistance movement, and was able to obtain extra food ration cards to feed all the people in his care.
Somehow, the Germans found out about the Dutch mother and son who were secretly sheltering Jews. On February 16, 1944, the Gestapo raided both Klein households. They arrested all seventeen Jews, as well as Jan and Mrs. Klein. In the chaos of the raid Bob Denneboom managed to escape, perhaps using his exceptional physical prowess to outrun the Nazis. Everybody else was taken to concentration camps.
Bob’s parents, sister and brother-in-law, and other relatives were murdered in Auschwitz. Jan Klein was sent to Dachau, and his 65 year old mother went to a work camp in Vught, Holland. Thankfully, both Jan and his mother survived the war and returned to their homes. Of the seventeen Jews who were hidden by the Kleins, only three came back alive, including Roza Vos-Rijksman, who later married Bob Denneboom.
After the war, Jan went back to his quiet life as a gym teacher, and didn’t talk much about his heroic actions during the Nazi occupation. Bob and the other Jews saved by Jan told everyone they met about the generous Dutchman who opened his home and his heart to seventeen Jews, most of whom had been complete strangers to him before they moved into his small cottage.
Jan Kasper Klein was honored as Righteous Among the Nations by Israeli Holocaust Memorial Yad Vashem in 1974.
For hiding seventeen Jews, at great personal sacrifice, we honor Jan Kasper Klein – and his mother – as this week’s Thursday Heroes.

These were both full of noteworthy moments in Olympic History:
Montreal 1976 was the first time Canada hosted the Olympic Games. Queen Elizabeth II opened the Games, and her daughter Princess Anne was a competitor (who was also the only female competitor not subjected to sex verification testing). At these Games, 14 year old gymnast Nadia Comăneci became the first person to score a perfect 10 in the Olympics. And amusingly, the Olympic Flame was extinguished by rain a few days into competition. An official relit the cauldron with a cigarette lighter, but it had to be doused and relit again with a backup of the original flame.
Seoul 1988 was also South Korea's first Olympics. It was seen as both symbolic of the nation's recovery from the Korean War and - due to the lack of widespread boycotts that had become commonplace in the past decade - the beginning of the end of the Cold War. Here, diver Greg Louganis won two gold medals despite hitting his head on the springboard and suffering a concussion (which would later become the source of controversy once he revealed his HIV diagnosis to the public in 1995, despite there having been no danger from his blood in the chlorinated pool).

-For many years I held many preconceived notions about Atlantis gay cruises. Of course I was worried I was not hot enough, slim enough, muscled enough, and I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the party people. Yet so many people have told me in the past few years that an Atlantis cruise can be like any other: what you make of it. You don’t have to go to dance parties, stay up all night, or be less than 10% body fat to enjoy yourself. And IF you do want to go to dance parties, there are plenty of them, with fun creative costumes, great music, and a sea of sexy beings, which I can verify from personal experience is NOT the case on any straight cruise I’ve been on. So my partner Santi and I decided to jump in and go. We had actually signed up for another we couldn’t go on, so the anticipation had been building for years now.
-Arriving at the cruise terminal, it was clear how different this week was going to be, as so many parts of the queer tribe trickled in with bubbles, lewks, and smiles. The Oasis of the Seas is enormous, with distinctive zones including a promenade which felt a little mall-like but was spacious and led to a boardwalk, a beautiful green park space spanning another deck, and of course the top decks with pools and hot tubs. The whole ship creates a giant queer space where people can show off and be radically self-expressive. The costumes people brought were so impressive, and most everyone brought great energy and friendliness to the cruise. Unfortunately the wind and a bit of rain prevented the first few days from being spent poolside, but it did allow us to spend time in the thermal spa and enjoy the welcome party (one of my favorites because it was in such a large space), dog tag tea dance, pink party, and neon party before we even got to a port. The first port was San Juan, and we hiked through the rain to see the fort. Despite my military service, I hate the war-like instinct of our past and present. We are so lucky to be able to live fairly freely in this moment and just be ourselves. -Gays being ourselves can be a lot, especially for those like me who tend toward being a little introverted, slightly socially awkward. During moments where the crowd and music was all too overwhelming, it was easy to just slip away, get fresh air, maybe a costume change or quiet moment in the cabin, then join the party again. I wish every dance party had the option of going downstairs to one’s room to enjoy a respite. Could we keep up with the younger and more hardcore EDM / party folks all week? Hell no! But I loved dipping into the party when it felt right, and dipping out when it was time. Fortunately Santi keeps me grounded. We didn’t go to every dance party, and we did get some rest. -That rest did allow us to go to some of the restaurants and see some shows. The sushi restaurant stood out with a fantastic truffled lobster sushi roll, and the chef’s table experience rivaled many celebrated Bay Area restaurants. (Kudos Chef Abigail) The rest of the food was fine, and we hadn’t planned on focusing on the food anyway. There could have had more bottom-friendly food with improved veggie options and whole grains and plant based proteins. But the SHOWS! OMG the Aqua 80 show (imagine ‘O’ on a smaller scale, on the back of a ship) was spectacular! They water danced and slack lined and flew in on wires with twisting rings, but the diving was my favorite. The 3-meter springboards were underutilized, but they impressively dove from about 10-meter and about 20-meters (from the highest part of the ship structure). No wonder they can’t do it in high winds. Really fearless and goofy but clearly skilled divers. It capped off a sweet date night with Santi. We missed the aerial show but did catch Alan Cummings perhaps workshopping part of his new show. I caught the tail end of the last night’s comedy show, including making merciless fun of folks (while covering up their names) from their Telegram posts during the week. I forgot the comedian’s name, but he truly hit the funny bone. We’re all ridiculous, so let’s laugh about it. Really loved this wild ride of a week. Thanks to all the sprites and nymphs and oceanids who made this trip Into the Deep one that will no doubt call us back to the queer seas very soon.

5 Types Of Swimming Pool
Mentor Water leads the way in providing top-notch swimming pool solutions. We offer a wide array of products and services covering everything you need to craft the perfect pool, whether for hotels, resorts, or homes! From the initial idea and design to the construction and ongoing upkeep, we have a complete set of services to turn your pool dreams into reality.
Lap Swimming Pool:- A pool specifically made for swimming laps and water exercise is known as a lap pool. It is often long and narrow, which makes it perfect for cardiovascular training and stroke practise because swimmers may swim back and forth uninterrupted. The length of a typical lap pool is roughly 25 yards (75 feet) or 25 metres (82 feet), matching the lengths used in competitive swimming. To keep swimmers separated and in order during busy swim periods, these pools frequently have lane markers. Lap pools are common in health clubs, colleges, and residential settings, catering to people looking for a quick and easy way to keep in shape while reaping the rewards of swimming.
Pre- Fabricated Swimming Pool:- For homeowners looking for a quick, affordable, and hassle-free pool construction, a pre-fabricated swimming pool is a popular option. These swimming pools are normally produced off-site, in a factory, and then delivered to the installation site. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials, such as fibreglass, vinyl, or steel. This method drastically shortens the construction period, enabling homeowners to use their pool sooner. Pre-fabricated pools offer a practical and cost-effective alternative for people looking for a swimming pool without going through the drawn-out construction process, albeit having design constraints compared to custom-built pools.
Diving Swimming Pool:- A diving pool is created specifically for recreational and competitive divers. It has a deeper area with strict depth restrictions, often between 12 and 15 feet (3.7 and 4.6 metres), to ensure safe diving. The pool has a variety of diving platforms and boards, such as 1- and 3-meter springboards and 5-, 7.5-, and 10-meter platforms. These swimming pools are made to reduce turbulence and guarantee a clear landing space. Swimming pools, schools and sports facilities frequently have diving areas that offer a regulated setting for practise and competition.
Designer/Customiezed Swimming Pool:- A designer or bespoke swimming pool is a unique water haven made to the owner's exact specifications and aesthetic preferences. These pools frequently have distinctive forms, materials, and priceless extras like waterfalls, fountains, and elaborate tile work. For homeowners that appreciate both usefulness and aesthetics, they are painstakingly planned and built by pool designers and builders to blend with the property's surroundings, creating a gorgeous and exclusive refuge.
Toddler Swimming Pool:- For young children, a toddler swimming pool provides a shallow, secure aquatic play space. For the protection of babies and toddlers, these pools are typically small with a depth of only a few inches. They frequently have vibrant decorations, water sprays, and interactive water features to give kids a fun and safe place to splash around while introducing them to the pleasures of water at a young age.
Our commitment revolves around ensuring quality, dependability, and affordability. Contact us today to learn more about how we can help you achieve your dream swimming pool construction.
