CATHEDRALS ON THE SEA...

Just a quick progress update on my second book, which is currently in the last stages of completion...

'Cathedrals on The Sea' tells the stories of the design and service career of some of the most memorable and remarkable postwar passenger ships ever built. They are all bound by a single, common thread; that being the

fact that I have sailed on all of them.

Each chapter also encompasses my recollection of what it actually felt like to be aboard each of them.

In the mix are; Ausonia. Black Watch. Canberra. Crystal Symphony. Islandbreeze. Marco Polo. Norway. Queen Elizabeth 2. Rotterdam. Royal Clipper. Sovereign of The Seas.

In technical terms, this new book comes in at approximately seventy thousand words, and it will feature a selection of some eighty, personally sourced colour photographs.

'Cathedrals on The Sea' will be published by Pen and Sword Books. I was- and remain- hugely impressed by the care, effort and expertise that they put into the presentation of my first book, 'Titanic; Superstars and Scapegoats'. That book continues to garner great reviews, going forward.

Needless to say, I am both excited and energised by the prospect of sharing such a profoundly personal body of work with you. Please stay tuned for updates.

De Holland Amerika Lijn verzorgde vanaf 1873 een verbinding tussen Rotterdam en New York. Vanuit Rotterdam vertrokken duizenden Europeanen naar de Verenigde Staten voor een beter leven. In 1959 werd de Rotterdam V het laatste schip dat gebouwd werd voor deze trans-Atlantische lijndienst. Begin jaren ‘50 was al duidelijk dat het vliegtuig de rol van het schip zou overnemen. De Rotterdam werd dan ook ontworpen met een nieuwe rol n gedachten. Het schip zou een deel van het jaar op de lijn Rotterdam-Nee York varen en deels cruisediensten vervullen. In 1968 was de lijndienst niet rendabel meer en voer het schip alleen nog cruisevaarten. In 1971 arriveerde het voor een laatste dokonderhoud in Rotterdam. Na jaren van trouwe dienst werd het schip afgestoten en dreigde na een overname door Premier Cruises (en faillissement) sloop. Een consortium zorgde voor behoud van het schip. Ondanks dat er veel gedoe was over het feit dat woningcorporatie ‘Woonbron’ maatschappelijk geld investeerde, kwam het tot een succesvolle redding. Sinds 2008 ligt het schip als hotel/restaurant van @westcordhotels aan het Derde Katendrechtsehoofd. ————— At Katendrecht you can visit the SS Rotterdam. The ship was build in the 1950’s as a liner to ship immigrants from Europe to the US. But it was already clear that airplanes would take over this role. Therefore the ship was already designed to be used as a cruise ship. From 1968 on this would be its role within the famous @halcruises group. It sailed the seven seas and its world cruises were famous. In 1990’s it was sold to Premier Cruises. After its bankruptcy the ship was saved and was renovated and turned into a hotel and restaurant.
