Seeing Viv like that tweet about how "people need to get over the amateurish pilot" infuriate me to no end.

The pilot looks better than what we've seen of the show so far. Especially with the motion sickness trailer, Vaggie disappearing from it, and the weird static Yule Log video where they're just frozen in place. No movements, no blinking, NOTHING. Only the fire is moving.

And stans saying that the new VAs are a "massive improvement" over the old ones piss me off so badly.

If they're such an improvement, then why does have the new cast sound like the old cast??? Why not let the actors try their own versions of the characters? (Really curious if Alex sounds like Stamper) Hmmm almost like Viv knows the old VAs were a huge reason for the pilots success in the first place. 🤔🙄

The only character that sounds completely different from the pilot is Husk, who is just Keith David talking. I love KD but God Viv you really didn't give a fuck. You were just excited to have KD.

Also, it's so funny to me that she really thought she'd get Weird Al for Lucifer just because she met him in person once, and after getting Kesha and Norman her ego got so inflated she probably thought she could get anyone she wants. So glad Norman didn't come back.

Also, you know she probably gushed all over Kesha and showed her the Die Young video. "Look look I made something popular with YOUR song!!! I'm totally on the same level of stardom!!!"

All of this. If you like the new VAs that's fine, but anyone who argues that they're "a massive improvement" over the pilot cast is doing so around a mouthful of copium and Vivzie's boot; Blake's trying to sound like Michael and failing and Amir's got none of the danger Ed brought to Alastor. The only edge they're probably going to have on the pilot cast is singing, but we know that that's not why Vivzie dropped them all.

Also, this is a grapevine thing so I have no way of proving it, but apparently Viv soured relations with Kesha because she wouldn't leave her the hell alone.

The only thing an A&R man needs, Seymour Stein once said, was a good pair of ears. Stein, who has died aged 80, might have added indefatigable enthusiasm, a streak of opportunism and a shrewd business brain, all of which he deployed in a career that saw him sign the deals that launched the careers of Madonna, the Ramones, Talking Heads, kd lang and many others.

Those artists enjoyed their first hits on Sire Records, the label Stein co-founded in 1966 and with which he remained synonymous even after his company had been absorbed by the Warner Music group. By the time he stood down in 2018, unhappy with corporate politicking, Stein’s achievements had long since earned him a place among the finest “record men” – as they were known – of his generation.

“I have no easily definable skills or talents. I’m a hit man, a record business entrepreneur,” he wrote in the introduction to his autobiography, Siren Song, in 2018. He played no instrument and had no technical knowledge, for which he was ultimately grateful, believing it might have got in the way of an appreciation of artists who could not be judged by conventional musical standards.

The story of how Stein acquired the US rights to the then-unknown British band Depeche Mode for his label typified his modus operandi, based on instinct and energy. One day in 1980 he picked up the latest issue of a British music paper in his New York office and read about a new group signed by a UK contact, Daniel Miller, to his Mute Records label. On a hunch, he grabbed his passport, booked a ticket to London on Concorde, and went straight from the airport to meet the group in Basildon, Essex, their home town, an hour’s drive east of London. “I signed them on the spot,” he remembered.

Their subsequent success made them one of a string of British bands whose records he released in the US. When his rivals called him an anglophile, it was not always, he recalled, meant as a compliment. But it was British musicians, from the Climax Blues Band to the Smiths, who provided a bedrock for his business.

To sign Madonna Ciccone in 1982, he summoned the singer to his bedside at the hospital where he had undergone heart surgery. Having listened to her demo tape, he offered the 24-year-old $45,000 for three singles with the option to release an album. Going on to sell more than 60m albums in the US alone while helping to reshape feminism for a new generation of young women, she was his greatest success.

He was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Dora (nee Weisberg) and David Steinbigle, Orthodox Jews whose own parents had emigrated from Galicia, the region of eastern Europe straddling Poland and Ukraine. His father was employed in Manhattan’s garment industry while his mother worked at her family’s market in Coney Island.

A heart murmur in infancy kept him away from sports at Lafayette high school, where he discovered that he preferred applying his prodigious memory to Billboard magazine’s charts of current bestselling pop records than to his lessons. The love of music was kindled by listening to the records brought home by his older sister.

During a summer holiday he talked his way into an internship at Billboard’s offices on 47th Street and Broadway. It was there that he met Syd Nathan, the myopic, asthmatic, choleric boss of King Records, the label of James Brown, based in Cincinnati. In 1961 Nathan suggested that he shorten his surname and offered him a job, asking, “Do you want to be a spectator or do you want to be in the game?”

It was at King that Stein learned, from the ground up, how the record business really worked. His knowledge would be expanded while working for George Goldner, another old-time record man, at the Red Bird label, where the Shangri-Las and the Dixie Cups were the hit acts.

There he met the songwriter and producer Richard Gottehrer, with whom he founded Sire, each putting in $10,000. The Climax Blues Band, Barclay James Harvest, Matthews Southern Comfort – all from the UK – were among early successes, along with an album by the Dutch band Focus, before the pair began releasing their own self-recorded albums from 1970.

After Gottehrer had left the label in the mid-1970s, Stein and his wife Linda could be seen patrolling the New York clubs, scouting a new generation of local bands. They were quick to pounce on the Ramones, with their two-minute blasts of brattish attitude, and the cooler art-school rock of Talking Heads. From the UK came Echo and the Bunnymen, Soft Cell, and the Pretenders, whose American singer, Chrissie Hynde, was impressed by Stein’s extraordinary recall of lyrics old and new.

As well as continuing to sign emerging acts – many of them from the UK, such as My Bloody Valentine, Aphex Twin and Everything But the Girl – Stein also played a significant role in the later careers of established stars. Brian Wilson’s eponymous first solo LP was released on Sire in 1988; the following year Lou Reed’s artistic momentum was revived by the first of a series of Sire albums, titled New York.

While on a constant search for new music, Stein used his fortune to eat well and to collect art and antiques, including The Siren by the pre-Raphaelite painter John William Waterhouse, which he sold at Sotheby’s in London in 2018 for a reported $5m. In 1983 he helped found the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, into which he was inducted in 2005.

He and Linda Adler were married in 1971, shortly after she had recovered from the shock of his announcement that he was gay. Their formidable and often turbulent partnership, which also produced two daughters, was ended by divorce after seven years. Samantha, their elder daughter, died of cancer in 2013. Stein is survived by their younger daughter, Mandy, and by his sister, Ann.

In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Rohit disclosed, "The phase that he (Ronit) was going through, it was just me with him, there was no one else. It was a very volatile phase for him. It was volatile because there was no work. Industry had rejected him. His friends would tell me ‘Rohit, you are a star on TV, but your brother won’t make it"

After making his feature debut with Bank Robbery, Ronit went on to become well-known in 1992 with the love romance Jaan Tere Naam. Back then, "Akkha India Jaanta Hai," the movie's smash hit song, had also become a national anthem. But after a few more films, Ronit's success vanished. But the popular TV programmes Kasauti Zindagi Kay and Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi gave his career a boost.

Although Rohit is his younger brother, at that time he had to act as his older brother. Then Rohit said, "I was his older brother. People who see him now don’t remember that phase. Because his film audience… They went away with the film. The viewers he gained after Kasautii, they don’t know about his struggle. For them, Ronit Roy is Rishabh Bajaj (his character from Kasauti Zindagi Kay).”

In the 2017 film Kaabil, which starred Hrithik Roshan, Ronit Roy and Rohit Roy shared the screen. It's interesting to note that both brothers had bad roles in the film.

1) Technique section:

How was it made?

This film featured tightly synchronized music and sound effects to traditional animation. The sounds were recorded at Cinephone studios in New York, using Pat Power’s Cinephone system (closely based on the Phonofilm). This was not the first cartoon to be synchronized with sound, “but it was the first to attract favorable attention”.

How was it captured?

The dialogue, sound effects, and music had to be recorded all on one track. Any unwanted sounds or mistakes would mean that the whole track would have to be recorded again from the start.  The score was conducted by Carl Edouarde, and the orchestra had to play to visual cues inked onto the cartoon’s print, to play on beat. To finance the whole recording process, Disney had to sell his car in order to pay the musicians.

What materials were used?

Disney and a small staff used public domain tunes and sound effects, and kept the timing with the use of a metronome and markings on film, to develop the soundtrack. This score was then recorded in New York with a small orchestra and a theater conductor. Before the soundtrack was produced, there was also a screening to test the accompaniment of sound to the film, shown to the Disney employees and their wives. The team used a mouth organ, pots and pans, slide whistles, and spittoons to produce the sounds.

What is the short about?

The short is about Mickey who is the first mate to captain Pete, on a steamboat. Mickey likes to goof off a bit and slacks off to have fun, but Pete does not tolerate this, and constantly reminds Mickey of the chores and duties he must fulfill aboard the boat. Minnie later boards the steamboat, but her ukulele and sheet music are eaten up by a goat on the boat. However, this does not faze the two mice, as they crank the goat’s tail like a phonograph, and the tune “Turkey in the Straw” begins to play from the goat’s mouth. Mickey begins using the different objects and even the livestock on the boat as instruments, to play along to the song, but captain Pete catches him goofing off again, and thus sets him off to work to peel potatoes.

This film depicts the main characters: Mickey, Minnie, and Pete.

3) Reception section:

How was it shown?

It was first shown in 1928 at Universal's Colony Theatre, now called The Broadway Theatre,  in New York. It was said to have generated a lot of laughter from the audience in the theatre.

How did you see it?

It was a funny, cute and silly film, featuring Mickey, who seems like a real rapscallion. Though, I didn’t much care for the parts where he harassed the animals on the boat by playing them like instruments, for the sake of music, like when he swung a cat around in the air by its tail.

What was the response at the time? Now? 

The music and sound effects that synced to the animation was hugely successful, and must have amazed and delighted those in the audiences. It was so successful that it led to international fame for Disney and Mickey. Since Steamboat Willie, the film inspired other competitors to not just solely focus on visuals, but to incorporate sound and audio to their productions as well. The only negative response that the film received was the part in the film where Mickey harassed the babies of a nursing sow. It was dubbed inappropriate by television distributors, and in the 1950’s, the scene was removed in later airings of the cartoon. Nowadays, the uncensored versions are accessible online. And while there is still the same negative response, viewers understand that the film was made in the 1920’s and is old-fashioned.

Nas - King’s Disease III ALBUM REVIEW

When Nas and Hit-Boy teamed up in 2020 for King’s Disease, it marked a new phase for Nas as one of the GOATS who has been able to age gracefully and still continue to put out good albums. When that album came out, I was not expecting Nas and Hit-Boy to go on a crazy run of quality albums. 2021’s King’s Disease II and Magic albums further solidified Nas’s GOAT status, his ability to rap over any kind of production, the fact that a rap veteran can still run laps around younger rappers, and Hit-Boy’s talent to cater to Nas’s rap style and push him out of his comfort zone. Nas’s discography is incredible and King’s Disease 2 and Magic already rank very highly within that list of amazing albums. For Nas, age 49, to team up Hit-Boy, 35, this far into his career and make incredible albums like the King’s Disease series and Magic show that Nas is in rare form and that their chemistry is pure magic. Nas is so good that he doesn’t sound old but sounds like an OG who can speak on all different types of life experiences and tell stories from an older perspective. King’s Disease III, their fourth collaborative album is yet another incredible addition to a flawless run of albums. What sets KD3 apart from the other 3 albums is that there are no features this time, which attests to how Nas and Hit-Boy work together, which is what the true essence of this album series is. Nas speaks to their chemistry and work rate on the first song Ghetto Reporter as he says “For me droppin' album after album like it's a various artist compilation / But it's just me and HB and this shit take concentration.” It’s a triumphant way to start the album as he proclaims KD3 is their best album yet. I also love what Nas says at the end of the song about how he wants to have sixty-year old fans and sixteen-year old fans. The KD series that Nas has been on doesn’t sound dated at all and Nas doesn’t sound like an old head at all as he embraces the sounds of today while sticking to how he raps. This is why it doesn’t sound forced when he raps over trap beats and even a drill beat on this album. As a younger Nas fan, this line made me happy. The first couple of songs sound fresh but also very vintage as Hit-Boy provides mid-tempo boom bap beats which Nas is most known for rapping over. The smooth beat switch on Thun sounds like an old train station, giving the song a classic New York hip hop feel, especially with the repeating “Queens in the house” vocal loop. On this song, I like how Nas talks about how he and JAY-Z joke with each other about their beef as people still compare them as if they’re still beefing. Nas has worked with some of the greatest producers of all time but as they have made multiple amazing albums together in the past 2 years, Nas feels that Hit-Boy is the Quincy Jones to his Michael Jackson on the song Michael & Quincy. Nas sounds so focused on this song and his scheme where he weaves in Michael Jackson references throughout his bars is masterful. He raps, “We easin' on down the road for the third win / Who's bad? It's up and it's stuck, feel the whirlwind.” The beat switch on this song is absolutely filthy as it smoothly transitions from a smooth boom bap beat to a hard-as-fuck trap beat. His bars with the MJ references on this part of the song are amazing as he raps “Even if I never had two arms full of Grammys / Or a sponsor from Pepsi, I'd still be honorary / Like Quincy on the trumpet, Hit-Boy on a drum kit / Nasty like Mike on the vocals, I overdub it / Bouncin' off the wall, always startin' somethin’.” The song 30 is a triumphant banger where Nas raps over an amazing trap beat, where Nas raps about this being his 30th year in music and still putting out quality. It’s like the happier brother to the song 27 Summers, which was a darker song where Nas rapped about success in his 27th year. I liked how he addressed Pete Rock wanting money from Illmatic and MC Serch selling his rights to Illmatic, which Nas is not tripping about. The beats on this album definitely pay homage to the 90s era that Nas started his career in. Songs like Hood2Hood and Recession Proof are another prime example and I love how Hit-Boy can make those kinds of beats and push Nas to try other styles. Songs like Reminisce, Serious Interlude, and I’m On Fire are a little slower and bring some balance to the album as Nas can flex really well, but can also reflect on the past and tell some pretty amazing stories. The song First Time is pretty awesome example of that as he talks about the first time people may have heard his music for the first time and his first time hearing some of his favorite artists. When I heard Nas for the first time, I think I was eight or nine and I was flipping through this one Rolling Stone magazine where JAY-Z was on the cover and I found a lot of my favorite music in. It was around the time Nas and Damian Marley did their album together and that was listed as one of the best releases in the magazine so I listened to a few songs from that and went back and listened to his older music and he became one of my favorites. One thing I love about this song is when he raps “First time you heard Nas, you probably heard somebody say that I pick bad beats / But I pick bad freaks,” addressing the narrative that Nas never picked good beats, which I never agreed with at all and is continuing to prove people wrong as Hit-Boy has been providing Nas with amazing beats since the first KD. Nas has always been one of the best storytellers and Beef is a perfect example of why he is and shows that he never lost that ability. In a similar fashion to I Gave You Power, Nas personifies beef and the consequences that occur when people are beefing. WTF SMH is an instant favorite as the beat knocks and I love the way Nas was flowing on it. The hook is so simple but is reminiscent of when he used some acronyms on Zone Out. The beat is so hard but it suddenly switches to the most heavenly soul sample I have heard this year. That loop is so beautiful and even though it changed the vibe of the whole song, Nas did not slip up at all. The song Til My Last Breath goes out on a celebratory note. It reminds me of the way King’s Disease ended with Spicy and similarly, it sounds like it could be a new New York anthem. There is not a single skip on King’s Disease III and it is further proof of an unprecedented run from a hip hop legend this late in his career, churning out quality albums at such a high rate with a producer that bridges barriers between young and older generations. Nas and Hit-Boy have been on fire these past few years and it has been pretty amazing to witness in real time.
