Once again it's time for synthesizer fun!

I may have mentioned before the Youtuber SynthDIYGuy; he did a video some time ago on a set of homebrew widgets he called "passive patch pals". These are very small devices that modify the action of a modular or semi-modular synth by sitting directly on the patch cables that connect them. I've built a few in the past, as seen below:

Some of these are relatively self-explanatory; the volume knob and the divide-by-ten both make things quieter, for instance. The rectifier cuts out half of the signal — whether the positive or negative half depends on which way it's pointing. A jacklight is pretty simple too — it converts the signal to a visual indicator by lighting up green when the signal is positive and red when the signal is negative.

The IamO is an invention of the SynthDIYGuy — it's a tiny voltage-controlled amplifier, made mostly from a JFET transistor, so if you put a slowly varying voltage into the middle jack, it raises and lowers the amount of signal let through from I(n) to O(ut). (There's some nuance; it's not exactly clean, and the lower the level let through, the more harmonics are added, so it's like a low-pass gate in reverse.). With a faster control signal, it's similar to the famous ring modulator sound.

But perhaps the most obvious of the devices above is also the one I was most dissatisfied with. The switch is just two jacks and a button; when the button is pushed, the signal goes through, and otherwise it is blocked. Now, sometimes that's just what you want — as a mute switch for a drum gate, for instance. But other times, you want the opposite — you'd want the signal to usually go through, and be cut off when you push the button, like a mute switch. It's tricky to find tiny pushbutton switches that do that, though. Obviously I did, though, or I wouldn't bring it up.

But this one is just a bit better — it can be either kind of button, depending on which output you select. Plug through the normally closed side, and it's a mute; plug through the other side, and it's a gate. And since it's all passive, you can run it backwards; if you put signal A into the NC side and signal B into NO, then the output sends A until you push the button, whereupon it's replaced with B for as long as you hold it down.

(The switch itself is what is termed a DPDT, but only using one side, for effectively a SPDT. Searches will clarify what's going on electrically.)

Really, I should spend more time actually making music...
