hello youths! 🥰🫶🏻 story time!
the above pics are from 1997: spring (pic 1) & fall (pic 2) --
(btw -- @blackcr0wking was just over 2 yrs old & already drawing! 🥺🥺🥺)
-- & here is how we got pics of ourselves (ie: selfies; we didn't really call them anything but "OOC pics," haha) online in the 90s:
you got friends to take them (the 1st pic was taken by my friend in her car), or you used, say... a ruler to push the button on yr camera that was precariously set ~just so~ on yr dresser (pic 2.)
you wasted a LOT of film; it was embarrassing asf to bring it to get developed if you were using a standard or those one-time cameras.
then you either had a scanner, a friend with a scanner, or in my case POST-MAILED yr pics to an online friend with a scanner... and THEY got them online for you... & then mailed the OG photos back.
phew.
basically, in the 90s world of BBS's, IRC, & AOL, you were ~hot shit~ if you had photos of yrself online. 💅
ps: pic 2 is one of only TWO shots that remotely worked out, out of 16 sheets of polaroid film.
in the IRC/AOL roleplay days (WoD: VtM/WtA, MtA, VtDA, & just any medieval fantasy) we used ourselves as our char pics ...
(y'all call them PB's now & idk what that stands for? help? 🥺)
& i was playing an old-clan tzimisce vampire named nakita taktarov, lolol, & ohhh, but this was considered a banger photo back then. 😬😬😬
by like 1999 people started using fantasy art or celebrity photos for char pics/PBs, & the bottom of our IC profile page would credit artist/name celeb.
& oh yes -- those who could draw their own characters were highly envied!
& that's how selfies & PBs were in the mid to late 90s.
like, now i wanna get into how long-distance/online friendships worked in the 90s... 🤔
::sighs in autism hyperfix & drops into porch chair; half-heartedly waves random kids off with her cane.::

The Guard - Old School v New School
WARNING:
Tumblr media
In all my classes last Monday, and also on Saturday, I showed the Renzo Gracie v Oleg Taktarov fight from the late 1990s. I mentioned it was from “the good old days” when trained we jiu-jitsu to fight, not for grappling tournaments. And I demonstrated the two ideas behind the guard.
There is the old school guard, demonstrated by Renzo in the video. Your head is back, feet in the air, ready to strike.
Tumblr media
And then the is the new modern guard where you’re sitting up, hands low and feet hidden so they can’t get grabbed.
Tumblr media
I have lost students over the years because for white to purple belts, I want to focus your training on the former. I personally feel that once you get to purple, then you should be comfortable in a one-on-one fight and by all means start exploring different things. But my first goal for you is helping you survive.
In the blue belt test, you need to demonstrate a “technical stand-up”. I taught it in four classes on Monday and also on Saturday. And like I mentioned on Saturday too … it’s embarrassing that some “black belts” don’t know this stuff …!
For those who were off last week, here’s a 90 second video with 79k views  (there are dozens of others too) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yC_sSqO4Vx0
Or, if you wish, here is my slightly longer video where I explain the same thing:

See you on the mat,

We Own the Night (James Gray, 2007) Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Walhberg, Robert Duvall, Eva Mendes, Alex Veadov, Danny Hoch, Moni Moshonov, Oleg Taktarov, Antoni Corone, Tony Musante, Dominic Colón, Yelena Solovey. Screenplay: James Gray. Cinematography: Joaquín Baca-Asay. Production design: Ford Wheeler. Film editing: John Axelrad. Music: Wojciech Kilar. It takes real talent to embrace movie clichés as whole-heartedly as James Gray does in We Own the Night and still come up with a watchable and frequently suspenseful film. We've seen the mean streets of New York in the 1980s so often in the movies before. Cops continue to battle mobsters on TV series, and the tale of brothers who go in radically different ways is as old as myth. There are misfit girlfriends in countless movies about working-class families, along with wives who suffer as their husbands go out into danger, and what's a mobster movie without snitches and turncoats? There's even a big car chase. It's in the last, I think, that Gray shows off his skill as director, for instead of shooting the speeding cars from the outside, Gray puts us inside the car carrying our protagonist, as a gunman in the pursuing car fires at him. It's a sequence as visually confusing to the audience as it would be to an actual driver. Of course, it helps if you have a cast as capable of transcending the clichés as Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Wahlberg, and Robert Duvall are. We Own the Night was not highly praised on release -- it has a 57% "rotten" rating on Rotten Tomatoes -- but I think it's going to be one of those films that look better with age, when we recognize the skill with which it's made.
