The piece that started it all. Sitting by the fire winter of 2019 binge watching ER with my Sadie and wondering what would happen if I really treated a piece of furniture as an art canvas. I had no idea what was coming into our world and our lives. I was just really happy painting all of these flowers. Some things have changed. Now we are binging Chicago Fire and of course our world has turned inside out but I’m still loving exploring this painting style and where it is bringing me as an artist. Ya know what today is? It’s my most favorite day ever. It’s not Christmas, or my birthday, or #valentinesday. It’s the day all household hero’s love the most if they are lucky enough to have it. It’s friggin cleaning day my friends. Cleaning day! Every 6 weeks I give myself the extremely amazing gift of an entirely clean house! I throw down my hard earned cash for a spotless toilet bowl! No more fur balls the size of pets. No toothpaste globs, no dishes, no unknown smells or giant sticky spots. I get one pure day of domestic bliss. On this day anything is possible. I might sit still. I might read a damn book, take@over the world, or take a nap. For one moment,there is nothing that needs cleaning. No one is allowed to cook on cleaning day. Shoes stay off on cleaning day. Momma is happy on cleaning day. Alas-It will all slowly erode. The fur will turn back into creatures and the toothpaste will be everywhere, smells will emerge, and it will be another 6 weeks till I feel this happy in my home, so I am sharing my blissful moment with you. My home is not staged. There are no fresh flowers or special lights. There is an old chair with rips covered by a granny quilt and a vacuum in the shot but it’s clean. It’s so so so clean. This should be a holiday. When I rule the world I will invest in the arts and cleaning services for all small business owners. I will even hire cleaning services for small cleaning service business owners. I don’t mean neutral (although we all know my thoughts on the subject) I mean something that you are doing because you are supposed to or you think it’s the only way it will sell or be accepted by polite society. By dull I mean you have not put your full heart into it. It hasn’t excited you, the creator, in its making. While We can’t go to a party and dance with our friends or go see a concert or visit a museum filled with delightful art to stir our imagination, we have to find a way to keep our hearts beating.l and our ideas expanding. So go do something. Anything. That you’ve never done before or in a new way. Just try it. Doesn’t matter if it sucks. Unless you are building a house or shed or something. I love to decoupage. It’s like going into battle. Who will win this time? Me-the tissue-the bubbles or the mod podge? Lucky for me I’ve been to the “Battle of the Podge” many times which is why I am now always the victor! I don’t use decoupage papers or posters or transfers made to fit furniture. I prefer to create mixed media patterns unique to the piece I am upcycling. There is a lot more freedom this way and a lot less screaming and crying when I’ve ruined yet another huge transfer or sheet. I know you know that scream. So despite every social media marketing expert telling me not to give away SO many of mysecrets for free I continue to do so. To make it easier for you than it was for me. “Black Sheep” Available now. Funny story behind this one. I wanted to paint one flower on 4 #reclaimed tiles so I could sell as a set. I tried to mount them in one frame and it did not work. I decided instead that it would be cool to frame separately so family members could share the set and each person could hang their piece in their own home. Sweet right?
