Sam Missing Out? Nah.
I like to think back that after their part in the Quinn situation was done in over with and vacations started with the pack. A beach day episode if you will.
Sam kicks Darlin' out of the room to hang with the pack boys and their mates. Darlin is upset about it most of the morning. Slowly through the day, they're enjoying themselves more at the beach.
But what about Sam? He's in a dark Hotel room finishing up work he couldn't have gotten done with Darlin to distract him. He's a little bummed and bored. The mates ain't having that.
They're sending pictures and videos in a 4-person group chat of Darlin going ham in volleyball, napping, and being an absolute menace. All without Darlin' realizing.
He doesn't respond to the text until he has the group in sight. A simple "Thank you." Is all he's able to send out before his name is getting called and he's being bombarded by Darlin and Asher to settle an argument.
Little note. The argument was over who would win in tug of war. David and Asher vs. Milo and Darlin.
I kinda wanna draw some of these out, but watch me have zero ambition to do so.

Angel, Baaabe, Sweetheart and Sam have all accidentally stepped on their mates tails and felt like absolute trash about.
David, Asher, Milo and Darlin absolutely played up how bad it hurt for attention and cuddles. They also all did that sad puppy whine and had them damn near in tears

Sam and Darlin' both go into little rants and rambles about things they feel passionate about. And when they do it, the other just kinda stares at them with a lovesick, dopey look on thier face because they're so in love with one another.

A friend and I are doing a buddy read of the least cringe sounding shifter romance novel we could find, and I would like everyone to imagine for a moment the mates doing the same thing

Babe and Angel are both very attracted to Tank and Sweetheart.
Tank and Sweetheart know about this attraction and openly flirt with the mates just to mess with Asher and David.

The majority of the pack can hit whistle notes
Lemme explain rq.
Dogs naturally are able to whine in a high-pitched register. I think the only one we've heard do so, however, is Asher in a BA. Correct me if I'm wrong. As low and scratchy as their speaking voices can be, I wholeheartedly believe that shifter wolves are infact inclinded to sing whistle notes.
Milo:
He has no problem flexing that he can sing. Will do so in a heartbeat. Sweetheart loves it. Their heart melts and core buzzes when he hits those high notes. This typically happens when they're cleaning up or getting home from a Sunday night dinner. Either in the car, kitchen, or shower.
Asher:
It happens when Baaabe is least expecting it. Hell. Asher doesn't expect it half the time. The first time it happened, they were jamming in the kitchen. Using cooking utensils as microphones. While they sung the notes in a lower key of the original track, Asher completely met the singer where they were. It was cute during their "cardio". But in that moment, it only put them to shame. They threatened to not feed Asher that night.
David :
He thought Angel had still been in the pool. He was getting more drinks from the fridge and lightly singing to the song blaring on the stereo just outside. Alpha man was feelin' himself. I'm talking hip swayin' and head bobbin'. The song hit its climax, and David let out a note in a register no one was aware he could reach.
"And you call me Angel."
David froze. Drinks in hand and fridge still open. He wouldn't hear the end of it.
Darlin':
Darlin had been home alone and getting some cleaning done while Sam was out. Something about them not being trusted with a shopping cart. As if someone was hurt badly. The music was cranked up, and they were dancing with and singing into the broom. Sam could hear them from outside, and a soft smile tugged at his lips. He opened the front door unnoticed. He was gonna make his way to them when a sharp noise attacked his eardrums, and he dropped the plastic bags in his hands. Darlin was at his side at the sound of crashing cans and glass. Darlin' now gets embarrassed every time they see a broom.

Darlin and Baabe
Welcome to the continuation of how I think the listeners met each other! On today’s docket we have a tough cookie and a chaotic bean. Gender and appearance neutral. I’m writing this with no storyboard outline thing so we’ll see how this goes. I do know it’s taking place after David makes Darlin go to a pack meeting.
Redacted Masterlist
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
Darlin hated pack gatherings. No, that wasn’t quite it. Or was it? They didn’t honestly know. Although that fit as well. They didn’t know how to feel about their pack. They loved the shifters within it and had a history with more than a few of them. That history was limited though. There were those mandatory years when they had no choice but to live around the pack. Their parents never forced them to participate beyond just being around though. Then they had met... him. And after that they had just not really gone back to being around the pack. It had become too difficult. They could see the sympathetic looks all the others sent them for what had happened to their friend. But David had been strict with his orders. And now Darlin was forced to go back there.
Back to those damn looks. How surprised would everyone be once they found out that Darlin had been here for a while now and just hadn’t been around to say hello? Or had David already told them? Darlin certainly hope he had. It would be one less thing to explain. Maybe if they were lucky, David would explain everything and they could just sit there. It wouldn’t be unfamiliar, just sitting off to the side while the pack mingled with each other.
Darlin sighed as they adjusted their flannel. They could have taken the bus or something, yes. Hell, even an Uber. The pack meetings were just held at the Shaw security building so there wouldn’t have been anything too suspicious about that, or a risk to breaking covert. They sighed again, their eyes glued to the sidewalk that lead them ever closer to their looming demise. They probably shouldn’t focus too strongly on how they were going to likely be crowded around and surrounded with questions. Judging by how that made their body tense and their core thrum with the urge to shift and run the opposite direction, they really shouldn’t think about that. That was fine. But what could they focus on instead?
Sam? He had sounded so apologetic over the phone as he explained that David was coming. Darlin didn’t know why their heart offered a weird warmth through their veins when thinking of the southern Solaire vamp. He was certainly a distraction, but not the kind of one Darlin required right now. David had mentioned that he, Asher, and Milo had mates now. That was certainly new. When had that happened?
Darlin took out their phone and ignored the cracked screen to scroll through the mostly one sided text conversation history from their alpha. Asher had tried a few times before giving up. Milo had just sent the one text when Darlin first left and that was it. They didn’t fault him for that though. They had never been very close to anyone after all. And it was hella awkward texting someone you didn’t know that well. There was no mention of mates. Asher and David both had unempowered mates, which didn’t really surprise Darlin all that much. Those two always did things together after all. Milo having a mate in the Department though... that was a surprise. They didn’t have to know Milo very well to sense the tension that the accented shifter felt for D.U.M.P.. Darlin could understand that though. After him and the Department’s inability to do anything about it, Darlin didn’t like them very much either.
The estranged shifter stopped in front of the door, their eyes staring at the push sign on the door. They could already hear and smell the others inside. The auras were a dead give away too. They took a deep breath before pushing the door open and stepping in. Their eyes drifted over everyone, meeting David’s gaze first. He gave a small nod and Darlin returned the action. Regaining that trust had already begun it seemed. David had said showing up would do that. At least he kept his word. Darlin frowned. If only they could do that too. They moved away from the door, the movement getting the attention of the others. The conversation in the room slowly died down until all that was left was small kitten whispers. Heard but unintelligible.
They adjusted their expression to be annoyed. It was a mask for the anxiety that had coursed through their body. They preferred the warmth that thinking of Sam provided. It would have been nicer if the vampire was standing next to them, his gentle voice grounding them. Hell, they would have taken a lecture about their survival skills instead of this. This god damn silence. The god damn stares. The god damn worry. The god damn surprise. A rush of air left Darlin’s mouth and they turned away, moving towards the door again instead. Forget this, it was a mistake.
A bubbly voice caught their attention. They paused, not turning around as they listened to the words that the voice was saying.
“Wow. It got kinda quiet in here. Hey Ashy, why is everyone so quiet all of the sudden?” Ashy? Who the fuck... wait did they mean Ash? As in Asher? Darlin turned around then, seeing Asher standing next to someone they didn’t recognize. They stretched their senses out but were met with a void of nothing. This stranger didn’t have an aura. Unempowered. And considering where they were, they hopefully had the status of being an informed unempowered. Wait a minute, why should Darlin care? It wasn’t their problem. Maybe Sam was right when he said they tended to adopt other people’s problems as their own.
They paused before clearing their mind from thoughts of Sam. Not the time. Stranger. Focus. They were still talking but Darlin wasn’t listening. They seemed close to Asher. Could they be his mate? Darlin shifted their weight from foot to foot, just watching. Asher seemed to be quietly explaining something to his mate. The word was fitting more and more when Darlin watched the connection between the two. It was similar to the other mate bonds they had seen growing up. The startled as Asher’s mate walked up to them. They could hear Asher inhale sharply and they felt their heart sink for a moment. Did Asher think they were going to do something? No... they couldn’t fault him for that. Everyone knew Darlin acted without thinking and wasn’t good with people, let alone strangers. But they wouldn’t harm someone innocent...
“Hello!” They said happily. Darlin looked at them, still feeling uncomfortable. They could feel Asher’s eyes watching the interaction. He must have been really protective of his lover to think that Darlin would hurt them. Darlin crossed their arms, staying quiet as they tried to level the other person with a gaze. Maybe if they could make them go away Asher would calm down. “Asher said you’ve been in Washington for a while, so we haven’t had the chance to meet.” Asher’s mate added on. Darlin nodded once and that was it. The mate looked back at Asher and some kind of silent exchange was made because the beta walked over. Darlin watched him nervously, even though their face just grew more annoyed. Was that why Asher had been nervous? Because Darlin looked angry? They supposed that made more sense than just thinking the worst of them. They didn’t think Asher’s personality would have done a full 180 while they were gone.
“Haha, sorry Tank.” Right... people here knew them as Tank instead of Darlin. “Baabe wanted to meet you. I told them you would be kinda overwhelmed though. But Baabe this is Tank. Tank, this is my mate.” Asher introduced. That was probably for the best. It was easier when there was a third party versus just throwing Darlin into a conversation with a stranger. They uncrossed their arms to slip their hands into their pockets.
“It’s nice to meet you, I guess. What’s your actual name?” They asked. Baabe waved a hand.
“You can just call me Baabe, I don’t mind. It’s kind of a thing for the mates now, y’know? Everyone just calls David and Milo’s mate by the nicknames.” Baabe responded with a smile. That seemed kind of awkward, but considering Darlin had forgotten about a nickname that had been used for them for years because they had gotten used to hearing Sam call them Darlin in a much shorter time they supposed it made sense. You just got used to calling yourself that and responding to it. They looked towards Asher. He didn’t seem to have any problem with anyone calling his mate the pet name. Although he probably wouldn’t hesitate to put anyone in their place if they tried pushing boundaries. More than him if Darlin could hazard a guess.
“Yeah. I mean, okay. Uhm... Good to know? Fuck, I don’t know.” Thankfully the awkwardness that Darlin had generator was expelled by Baabe’s laughter. It was a contagious sound. The corners of Darlin’s lips twitched upward and they felt some of their tension ease away. It returned for a moment when Baabe looped an arm through Darlin’s.
“Come on. You can come sit with me. Asher is a stinkbug anyways.” Baabe said as they pulled Darlin towards where they had been, leaving a stammering Asher behind. Darlin blinked, surprised. Baabe leaned closer to them and lowered their voice, even if the leaning closer was unnecessary. Darlin could hear them even if they hadn’t. “You looked kinda stressed. I could see it in your shoulders. Whatever you’re worried about, it’ll be okay.” They patted Darlin’s bicep gently, never dropping the silly grin on their face. Darlin smiled back softly. Maybe packs weren’t too bad.
