This Week I Have Been Mostly Reading (16)

Oh this is so late! But I’ve been on my holidays…which involved reading an actual book with an actual spine, I know, crazy or what? Anyway, back on the literal review bike, so here you go.

The Wheel (Biliouskaiju, Chrome Carnivale (thewarboys)) What? Interesting times for Nux, what with Judgement Day looming and his mates fighting for his attention. Why? Nux and Slit have a VERY complicated relationship. Seriously epic detail of the tournament. DRAMA! Highly recommend a read. When? 3rd July 2015 Quote 1 – “Alright, cough it up! You're not dyin' soft in bed! I will not Witness! Hear me, Below Boy?!" Quote 2 - He told of the men and women draped in chainmail made of bullet casings at the Bullet Farm, of how the air was filled with the sound of gentle metal clinking, like a chorus on the wind.

After the Fire (bonehandledknife(ladywinter), Primarybufferpanel(ArwenLune)) What? A Return of the MaxTM fic, of the heartstrings-tugging variety. And their very own brand of foreplay. Why? I’m rubbish at reviewing smut, so just read between the lines, yeah? When? 3rd July 2015 Quote – "Furiosa, an Imperator has come back!"

Bottled Glory (squeezedoutofmiracles) What? Slit placates an enraged Nux by bringing him a war trophy. He doesn’t know what it is, though. Why? Bounces wildly between dark and hilarious, and properly nails the War Boy turn of phrase…That was not intended as a pun, but it’s staying. When? 4th July 2015 Quote – His clay was all smeared off, and there were bite marks scattered over his shoulders, with a smear of chrome aerosol on his nose and Nux wanted to hear hours of story over how it had got there.

Until You Sleep (xenowhore) What? Slit taking care of a dying Nux. Why? Goes down in fic history as the one that reduced me to tears in Byres Road Starbucks. I didn’t even have to reread it, apart from picking out a quote (sniff). It does remind me why I’m determined to read ALL MAD MAX FICS because this is a prime example of a determinedly weepy fic I might have passed by. Because I’m not into that sort of thing, Oh no not me *bawling into my tall filter* When? 4th July 2015 Quote 1 – he knows he would take the burden of them if he could. Take them in the night and have Nux wake up the way he used to, annoying and prattling on like a pup, grinning at Slit as he pestered him into getting dressed faster. Quote 2 - When that morning comes, all the Rotgut in the world won’t be enough.

Leviticus 19:28 (Zagzagael) What? A guilt-ridden Furiosa makes a memorial of Ace. Why? It’s a rare fic where Ace doesn’t come home. Another one where I remember exactly where I was while reading it, but I digress. Memorable. Painful. Realistic. When? 4th July 2015 Quote – On a ripped and tattered scrap of paper, she had his name. She memorized the shape, whispered it until she could speak it aloud without choking on it. After ten days the name was illegible, rubbed to fading between her thumb and fingers and she had Capable write it out again, this time in block letters at the nape of her neck, just beneath the brand. Then she went in search of the tattooist.

Bad Boys Are More Fun|| Closed

Lake had always been the quiet one. He wasn't loud or insane, and he rarely ever partied. He hated being in the limelight, and would much rather be inside reading a book than at a party. 

So he wasn't really sure why he agreed to go to this house party in the first place. Probably because his twin wanted to go, and they always did everything together. But this time around he had had enough, getting drinks spilled on him and people hitting on him until he was close to a panic attack. Sending a quick text to his brother he turned on his heel, moving out to the sidewalk and starting the long walk back to his house. Of course he could have called for the family limo, but this was just more his style. 

He tucked his hands into his pockets, huddling against himself as he shivered. It was a lot colder than he expected it to be, but he figured he was too close now to justify calling a car. So he continued on, teeth chattering as he tried to move a little faster, getting a creepy feeling about being alone at this time of night.

This Week I Have Been Mostly Reading (15)

Sorry it’s late! Sparkle season makes things a bit crazy. As ever, it’s a privilege to reread these works and rave about them. Thanks to all the writers!

Seeing Red (Biliouskaiju, Chrome Carnivale (thewarboys)) What? Nux and Slit stumble onto an escape attempt. Why? Another bittersweet offering from thewarboys. See last week’s review for two others. When? 1st July 2015 Quote – "Not s'posed to be out of their room!" He turned a wild-eye down to the laundry strewn about the floor, tying them together, and the two bright-eyed young War Boys next to the empty basket. "That is not how Laundry goes!"

Furiosa (eag, @evilasiangenius )) What? Furiosa joins the ranks of War Pups. Why? I liked the training car on rails, the Prime as arch-villain to be thwarted, the War Boy hierarchical structure, the world beyond the Citadel. Such a lot of detail and character cameos tucked neatly into six thousand words. When? 1st July 2015 Quote – The white was cold but it warmed up quickly against her skin. It stole the color from her body; it covered the bruises, the brand, almost entirely. Covered her face. Her arms. Her shorn head. Every bit of visible skin.

All I Am (duesternis) What? Trucker au. One chapter per character. Why? It’s lovely. I haven’t got the words, I can only recommend. Really. When? 1st July 2015 Quote 1 – Nux talks too much. Talks too much and too fast and always to strangers. Quote 2 - praying to all the gods that will hear him, that he finds someone who approves of all of him. Quote 3 - Later Dag gets a photo in the mail of a small patch of grass growing on the dashboard of a truck, a tiny spider building a net between the blades.

Custodiet (palimsestus) What? Where they have to subdue a delirious Furiosa. From the same prompt as In the Dark Why? The knife-edged tension, the feels. When? 1st July 2015 Quote – “Blackwater fever,” came a gruff voice from behind them, and the Ace hacked a cough as he limped alongside. “She’s been drinking the water here.”

Splendid’s Moon (hellkitty) What? Furiosa makes plans for Ace’s birthday. Why? Ace’s reluctant reminiscing about his childhood in the old world. Also, it’s a Furiosa/Ace, which is none too common. When? 1st July 2015 Quote – “He said you’re so old you even have a…a…,” the pup looked at his friend, for help.

This Week I Have Been Mostly Reading (14)

The great thing about leaving a comment on a fic is when you re-read it (say, when you’re doing an idiot thing like writing a weekly review) and check the comments only to see you left one identical to what you’ve just written. I should just cobble together all my comments instead, but where’s the fun in that? They’re usually incoherent anyway.

Alright waffle over. Here’s part 14!

Stargazing (harrowmarrow) What? Nux contends with Larry and Barry’s ideological wrangling. A Nuxable encounter. Toast’s confusion is boundless. Why? Great voices. Confused Toast is the best Toast. Loads of great dynamics in here. And the Vuvalini get some good lines. I want to read it all again but I haven’t got time 😫

When? 28th June 2015 Quote – Let’s ask her mate how to smooth out the scratch we put in things.

Mother’s Milk (Biliouskaiju, Chrome Carnivale (thewarboys)) What? To the Pups, it’s the food of the gods (I’d say ambrosia but that is and always will be Devon custard, which doesn’t sound very godlike). Slit and Nux try getting their mitts on some. Also Rictus is a big bullying bastard. Why? Swings wildly between adorably cute and horribly heartbreaking. Which is just about right. And the ending is just…*sniff* When? 30th June 2015 Quote - "I AM NOT! I AM NUX, THE UNCRACKABLE!"

Brothers (Biliouskaiju, Chrome Carnivale (thewarboys)) What? War Boy coming of age. Why? thewarboys are aptly named. I think there’s been a rift in space time and they’re actually a pair of elderly War Boys reminiscing about their childhood. When? 30th June 2015 Quote – “What you do if anybody tries to take from you?" "GIVE 'EM HELL!" The chorus of little voices rang out, and giggled amongst themselves. "What you do if anybody thumps ya?" "PUT UP OR SHUT UP!" "Who ya go to if ya get hurt?" "ORGANIC MECHANIC!" "Who loves ya?" "DADDY LOVES US!"

Names Grow (Amazon_Syren) What? Couldn’t describe it better than the summary…A series of vignettes about what happened during the five months after the Many Mothers took the Citadel. Why? Nice to have a bit of Vuvalini-At-the-Citadel POV. Nice logics. Nice. When? 30th June 2015 Quote – She wonders if he’ll live long enough to be Gutter the Flowering, Gutter the Vine.

throw roses in the rain (evewithanapple) What? Cheedo and Dag in the Vault, the other three as supporting characters. Why? It’s very vivid, with the backstories and the here-and-now. Very real. When? 30th June 2015 Quote – When they’d come to the Citadel- each on her own, Joe’s harem slowly growing, prize by prize- they’d been encouraged to recall what had come before.
