how did you first get into fandom? Back when I was living in Glasgow, Scotland, it was my 21st birthday, and my friends and I were going to see a horror movie. Turned out, the tickets were sold out, so we decided to see Star Trek XI. I’d NEVER watched Trek in my life, didn’t know a thing about it, and when I walked out of that theater I was a totally changed human and now I am a Trek Encyclopedia LOL
how long have you been engaging with fandom spaces? Since 2009, so like 14 years.
how often do you read fanfics? Every day, if my brain is healthy enough that day! I sometimes take breaks of a couple months and only read published books though, I feel I get a different experience from both that I can equally appreciate.

share a personal headcanon that you feel very strongly about: Ian loves his mom more than he feels comfortable saying, because he feels like it's a family and even personal betrayal. I think it’s impossible to accurately describe how to feels to grow up with an abusive parent who vacillates wildly between adoring and abusive, but there’s no feeling quite like loving and hating your parent, desperately wishing you could be what they wanted so they’d stay, and hoping you never see them again. I know we’ve seen Ian follow Monica more than any other kids, but I think that any time he curses her out to his siblings or whoever else, each bad word is also like a self-cut.
you’re trying to convince a friend to get into your current fandom(s) If for My Hero Academia, I would have them watch the Heroes Rising movie, for Shameless I don’t even KNOW where I’d begin tbh LOL
and finally, what does fandom mean to you? Fandom is family! I’ve been in fandom for fourteen years, and I have so so so many real life friends who have been with me through literally the hardest parts of my life. My divorce, my ex husband going to prison, the birth of my child, me being a single parent, moving back to America, my coma, my kidney transplant. My fandom friends from across the world have uplifted me and been my support system through every single high and low. I don’t know how I’d be here without them, quite literally.

What does Fall Out Boy mean to me?
**Caution: This post is gonna get sappy** More under the break, if you wanna go down emo lane with me :) Think 2006 Pete Wentz…just with grammar and paragraphs.
So…I don’t know why, but I just really wanted to share this tonight. I think we all have stories to share, and I’d honestly be beyond thrilled if some of you shared, too. For me…FOB and this little bandom community has meant more than I can say, and I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge that and say thank you.
Nearly two years ago right about this time, I found out my marriage was ending. It was the long sad story that countless movies have been made from, but basically my husband wanted more out of life, and I wasn’t part of that future. It was a crazy huge shift to go from madly in love to unwanted/on the way to being single in the space of about three weeks.
July 22nd, 2016, was going to be a hard day. It was the day my soon-to-be Ex and I were supposed to have the fairytale wedding we’d been planning for nearly seven years. Instead, I was going to a lawyer and drawing up papers…ah, life. But I decided about two weeks before that I wasn’t going to sit in my basement and cry for the whole day. Nope…and I think that was the first time I made a positive choice to beat depression back. After some mad googling, I found that FOB were playing four hours away at the State Fair.
Without going way deeper down memory lane than anyone wants to, I was an emo kid…on the inside. I never really got into music until I was about 19, but that was when I found Evanescence, Breaking Benjamin and some Panic!. I remember listening to From Under The Cork Tree during my school years, and I remember loving “Light ‘Em Up” when it came out. But the problem was…my Ex hated anything remotely “emo.” He didn’t like FOB, or Panic!, or MCR. He made fun of me once in the car when I put in FUTCT, mocking me singing to “Sugar.” So I stopped listening to those bands I loved and that had gotten me through some really hard times.
So when I saw that FOB was playing, I remember thinking “They sang that song, “Sugar We’re Going Down.” And my sister loves them…why not?” I hadn’t gone to a concert in years and my sister hadn’t ever gone to one. I figured why not go to a band she liked…because I’d forgotten how much I liked them too.
Fast forward to a sweltering midwestern evening and FOB coming out swinging under a huge sunset prairie sky. I hadn’t really heard any of SRAR beyond “Light ‘Em Up,” but I loved it. “Sugar” played and I was back in my tumultuous teens again. Then “Thks fr th Mmrs” came on and oh man. Guys…if I could take you back to the way that felt. To sing “he tastes like you only sweeter” and “Thanks for the memories, even though they weren’t so great.” It just, it’s silly, but it made me feel like it had been a good ride, but if it was over and that was okay. His loss. I’d move on. I’d find someone better. I’d be better myself, I’d be happy, I’d find that sweeter thing because I deserved it. It was honestly the first time I felt like I smiled with my whole heart in a long, long time.
The rest is history. I googled this band, Fall Out Boy–dimly I remembered that FUTCT CD that was in my car somewhere. I listened to that album again, discovered IOH and Folie (my fav album), danced with my sister to SRAR (kids–they like new things, not the old stuff!) and cried to “Jet Pack Blues” and “Novocaine.” I clicked on an AO3 link by accident and read my first Peterick story, then clicked another link and found a FOB blog on here.
Then I started to read more and more fanfic, listen to FOB, then Panic!, then MCR…then back to music that I loved. Me, not because someone told me I should or that I was stupid for liking it. I emailed @jiksax and found a friend who was an endless fountain of compassion after reading “And I’ll Burn” about two thousand times. I messaged @shatteredmirrors-and-lace23 and met a friend I’m pretty sure I’ll have for the rest of my life, and I yammered incoherently to @shark-myths about how her words made me feel things.
So I kept reading, and started writing again. There’s no way to explain it, but up to that point, I couldn’t watch a movie that had a romance, I had to leave the room if my married/dating/engaged friends were too obviously happy, I cried when I put my wedding ring in a box and resolved not to look at it, because it all hurt. But in Peterick…in this probably-not-real relationship, I found a way for my super-broken, half-dead little heart to feel something close to love again…and it didn’t hurt. It didn’t make me want to curl up and scream. It just felt…okay. I don’t know how to explain it. It was like I was missing love so much, and I couldn’t feel it any other way because it was a wound too fresh.
Then I met @laudanumcafe and @allkindsofplatinumandpercocet and @sn1tchesandtalkers and @das-verlorene-kind. Life got better, things got easier, love didn’t seem so impossible and I started to smile more. I went to Connecticut for no other reason than I wanted to see FOB again, I wanted to see 50k rare books at Yale’s museum, and I deserved it. Now, I look back at myself two years ago and see the canyon of heartbreak…but I also know how good this mountaintop feels. I know how it feels to have friends all over the world, to sing along to songs that tug at my heart and make me feel brave. I know the future is a bright, amazing, shining thing, and because the world is a small, silly, strange place…it started with a Fall Out Boy song.
So thanks, my friends. Thanks for your kindness, and your love, and your comments on my stories and for letting me cry over yours. Thank you for being there, and for being you. Believers never die.
