Flea market find: an urban reflection. Barcelona, Spain

Recently at this flea market, Mercat del Encants, an old man called out to me randomly in Spanish, “Did you make your purchase!?” I nodded no, but now I realize I could have told him that my favorite find was this view with this reflection, not something I wanted to buy.

I’ve been in Barcelona for almost two years now, but this is the first time I saw a view of this noticeable tower that I felt compelled to share. The Torre Gloriès looks mighty and masculine; however, the aspect that I wanted to highlight (without knowing it) is that it has imperfections and sensitivities. With the reflection, the tower looks emotional and less confident - a being that second-guesses itself all the time. It takes time for hidden aspects to unveil themselves.

Thinking of the Catalans today as they vote on a referendum for independence which is opposed by Spain's national government, and many other governments (including the US). While it is very unlikely the measure would pass, the commitment the region's citizens have demonstrated to democracy is incredible, especially as an American where our right to vote is vastly underutilized, and for some continuously threatened. From farmers promising to use their tractors to block the national police from shutting down polling stations to Catalonian government leaders at all levels risking their jobs and freedom to enable the vote to private citizens printing ballots when the Spanish government seized the official ones, to the people - old and young - who showed up to protest arrests and slept in polling stations to ensure they were not shut down. Tiene 34 plantas sobre la superficie, además de cuatro plantas subterráneas, para un total de 145 metros de altura. El edificio posee en total 50.693 metros cuadrados de superficie, de los que 30 000 son de oficinas, 3210 de instalaciones técnicas, 8132 de servicios, incluyendo un auditorio, y 9132 de aparcamiento. Llegó el momento de caminar por Barcelona. La mejor manera de conocer un lugar y su gente es caminando, perderse, preguntar. Salí temprano del piso de mis amigos, acompañé a uno de ellos a su sitio de trabajo, en el camino me va dando instrucciones de qué hacer, por dónde ir, qué conocer, con qué se debe tener cuidado, entre otros muchos detalles útiles para un aventurero en su exploración por primera vez en la ciudad. Vamos caminando y lo primero que vemos fue un enorme edificio, para unos es el pepino de Barcelona, para otros cualquier referencia fálica... Un rascacielos corporativo llamado Torre Glòries, anteriormente Torre Agbar. Éste rascacielos es señal de modernidad y avance económico de la ciudad. Por lo general cuando viajo no investigo los detalles de los lugares, su historia y cultura, sitios emblemáticos, etc. Estando en el lugar permito que la situación me vaya llevando a los lugares, recomendaciones de las personas y las posibilidades de transporte. Luego con calma busco mayor información del lugar o curiosidades, les colocaré en los post la información más detallada en la medida de lo posible.
