According to acting High Commissioner for Human Rights Nada Al-Nashif, the country needs to be more strong in combating systematic racism because prior efforts have been "piecemeal." The study reveals trends of prejudice, excessive force by law enforcement, illegal deportations, and a disproportionate number of African-Americans in prison systems worldwide. The report focuses on seven officers killed in the line of duty: George Floyd and Breonna Taylor in the United States, Kevin Clarke in the United Kingdom, Luana Barbosa dos Reis Santos in Brazil, Adama Traoré in France, and Janner (Hanner) Garca Palomino in Colombia.

Today UN special rapporteur @francesca.albanese.unsr.opt gave a scathing report at the UN about the ongoing genocide in Gaza. She talked about the systematic destruction of Gaza’s healthcare system based on unfounded claims that they were used as Hamas command centres.

In her written report she talks about the attack on Al Shifa hospital in November where the iof fabricated evidence. At the time Al Shifa was housing thousands of patients and the iof turned it into a death zone.

This image shows Inas Abu Maamar (36) cradling the body of her niece Saly (5) who was killed, along with four other family members, when an Israeli missile struck their home, in Khan Younis, Gaza, 17 October 2023.

The photographer describes this photo, taken just days after his wife gave birth, as a “powerful and sad moment that sums up the broader sense of what was happening in the Gaza Strip.” He found Inas squatting on the ground, embracing the child, at the Nasser Hospital morgue, where residents were going to search for missing relatives. Inas had raced to the family home when she heard that it had been hit, and then on to the morgue.

At the outset of the Israel-Hamas war, Israel instructed Gazans to evacuate to the south for their safety. Yet, according to reports from @guardian and @aljazeera, Israeli airstrikes heavily bombarded Khan Younis in southern Gaza from mid-October. Many of those killed were families who had left Gaza City days earlier. By the end of 2023, Palestinian women and children accounted for more than two-thirds of the death toll in Gaza, according to @unitednationshumanrights.

The jury was deeply moved by how this image evokes an emotional reflection in every viewer. Composed with care and respect, it offers at once a metaphorical and literal glimpse into unimaginable loss. Set in a geographically distant medical setting, it resonates globally, urging us to confront our desensitization to the consequences of human conflict.

The image is multi-layered, representing the loss of a child, the struggle of the Palestinian people, and the 33,000 people killed in Palestine. The jury recognized that this photographer was awarded for the same subject nearly a decade ago, underscoring the continued struggle for recognition of such a pressing issue.

GENEVA (6 March 2024) - UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk today urged the international community to act swiftly and decisively to prevent Haiti's further descent into chaos.

Last weekend’s mass prison breakout has been described by Haitian officials as a lethal threat to national security, Türk said. More than 4,500 inmates are now known to have escaped, among them prominent gang members as well as those arrested in connection with the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. The break followed coordinated gang action against national institutions with the stated aim of bringing down the Government.

“This situation is beyond untenable for the people of Haiti,” the Human Rights Chief said. “Since the beginning of the year, a staggering 1,193 people have been killed, and 692 others injured by gang violence.

“The health system is on the brink of collapse. Hospitals often do not have the capacity to treat those arriving with gunshots wounds. Schools and business are closed, and children are increasingly used by gangs. Economic activity is asphyxiated as gangs impose restrictions on people’s movements.  Haiti's biggest provider of drinking water has stopped deliveries. At least 313 000 people are currently internally displaced.”

Ahead of today’s Security Council meeting, Türk called once again for the urgent deployment, with no further delay, of the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti (MSS), to support the National Police and bring security to the Haitian people, under conditions that comply with international human rights norms and standards.

“The reality is that, in the current context, there is no realistic alternative available to protect lives,” the High Commissioner said. “We are simply running out of time.”
