#1 Suggestion for Hiking Boots-- Vasque -- Red Wing
#1 Suggestion for Hiking Boots– Vasque — Red Wing
The Absolute Must-have! (to get to the top of that next hill) If I had to pick one item I could not do without when I spent time in the rough outdoors, it would be my boots. I’m wearing them today as I write and scoop snow from the 2-foot dump we got.  My feet are warm and dry. Here’s why I think you are smart to invest in boots.  Here’s what you won’t do: You won’t wake up in a ravine from that…

Favorite Boots
Tell us about your favorite pair of shoes, and where they’ve taken you. I got a call one morning from a Vasque rep who wanted to send me a pair of their new Breeze mids. I was really needing a pair of boots at the time, and I checked the mail every day for them. Those boots took me everywhere, including the top of Colorado’s highest peak in January.  I wore them in the winter,  summer,  snow,…

Boots/shoes- I always travel with two pairs and flips flops. So you’ll see how things are partnered up; in the summer it’ll be the Defcons and the Breeze, winter time it’s the Torre and the TGoods. This allows for the bad weather, mud, etc that is always present and me to have a pair ready for work and play no matter the weather.
1. Vasque Breeze Low- no longer made, so I just scored another pair but the Talus may be a solid replacement. The Breeze is waterproof, bomber 550 like laces, flat sole and can be used to run. Used year round on all ranges. Comfortable to freezing with proper socks.
2. Thorogood Moc Toe- waterproof, resoleable, tough as nails and USA made. I can’t remember this model but it has the waterproof membrane in it. Used mostly for long distance motorcycle rides/courses and any breaching courses. I wear them a lot because once broken in they are like slippers. If I can have only one boot- this is it. Comfortable from mids 20s to over 100 with proper socks.
3. DEFCON Vans- I know they are hard to get but these are my summer shoes because of how hot it gets in the south. I’ll do June ,July and August wearing these and also when traveling by plane. 60-100 degrees dry conditions and flat terrain.
4. Vasque Torre AT GTX- bottom line is this is the best waterproof hiker on the market today. Sorry to all you Salomon people but you’re not even in the same category. The Torre has complete goretex liner, 550 laces, wide toebox, flat sole, a rubber rand that encompasses the entire shoe and it weighs in under that magical 22 ozs. (That’s the weight of a boot when most people say “it’s really lightweight “!) . The Torre has no competition on the market right now IMO. Low 20’s to mid 80’s with proper socks.
5. Olukai . There is only one sandal/flip flop and that’s Olukai. Legitimately the one piece travel gear that anyone who travels a lot will fight over and I myself have called the most important piece of travel gear. Olukai flops will last longer and be more comfortable than any of the crap you see in a box store. This is the Ohana model with the bomber tread.

With numerous options available, selecting the perfect pair of hiking boots can be a daunting task for outdoor enthusiasts. Next up, we'll delve into the key components to consider when choosing your ultimate hiking companion.
Key Components In Choosing Hiking Boots
When it comes to picking the right hiking boots, it's not just about the design or what looks cool. Your boots are your companions on rugged trails and challenging terrains, so choosing the right ones can make or break your outdoor experience. Let's break down a few crucial components to keep in mind when shopping for hiking boots.
Consider Durability
Durability is a fundamental aspect when selecting hiking boots. You want them to last through rough trails, unpredictable weather, and rigorous usage. Look for materials like full-grain leather or high-quality synthetic options such as Gore-Tex, known for their remarkable durability and weather-resistant properties. These materials can withstand harsh conditions and provide reliable protection for your feet during extended outdoor excursions.
Choosing durable materials means your boots will maintain their integrity over time, ensuring you get the most out of your investment.
Assess Comfort and Support
Comfort and support play a pivotal role in determining how enjoyable your hiking experience will be. Features such as cushioned midsoles, ankle support, and a well-structured outsole are essential for providing superior comfort and stability during long hikes.
Think of it this way: Just like a good mattress ensures a restful night's sleep, comfortable and supportive hiking boots enable you to traverse various terrains with ease.
Weight and Flexibility
The weight of your hiking boots can significantly impact your overall outdoor experience. Lighter options can help reduce fatigue during long treks, allowing you to conserve energy for more enjoyable hikes. Moreover, flexibility is crucial for adapting to uneven terrain, providing agility and preventing discomfort.
Imagine feeling as light as a feather while traversing through rocky paths—the right blend of weight and flexibility in your boots can make that possible.
In essence, selecting the right hiking boots involves carefully balancing factors such as durability, comfort, support, weight, and flexibility. The goal is to find a pair that not only suits your specific outdoor activities but also enhances your overall comfort, stability, and safety throughout your adventures.

Essential Features of High-Quality Hiking Boots
When you're out on the trails, the last thing you want to worry about is your footwear. High-quality hiking boots can make a mile of difference in comfort and performance. Let's delve into the key features that define top-notch hiking boots.
Waterproofing
One of the first things you'll notice about top-quality hiking boots is their ability to keep your feet dry no matter where the trail leads. Whether it's a drizzle or a downpour, waterproof hiking boots work tirelessly to keep moisture out. This feature ensures that your feet remain comfortable and protected even in wet or marshy conditions. Quality waterproofing technology keeps you focused on your adventure instead of worrying about wet socks and blisters.
Traction
Hiking boots with high-quality traction are an absolute game-changer when it comes to navigating various terrains and weather conditions. The outsoles of these boots are designed with aggressive lug patterns that provide superior grip on different surfaces, from muddy trails to slippery rocks. This means you can maintain your stability and confidently tackle steep inclines or declines without slipping or sliding.
Keep in mind: Even if you're just going for a casual hike, proper traction can prevent accidents and unnecessary strain on your feet and legs.
Breathability
Long hikes can really get your feet sweating, especially in warmer climates or during strenuous activities. Imagine trekking through breathtaking mountainous landscapes, only to be stopped in your tracks by sweaty, uncomfortable feet. That's where breathable materials make all the difference. High-quality hiking boots feature materials that allow moisture to escape, preventing that unpleasant feeling of walking around with damp, swampy socks.
By focusing on these essential features, high-quality hiking boots offer the comfort and protection you need for all kinds of outdoor adventures.
As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Now, let's turn our attention to nurturing and maximizing the lifespan of these essential gear companions—your beloved hiking boots.
Caring for and Wearing Hiking Boots
Tumblr media
Your hiking boots are like trusted companions on the trail - they support you, keep you safe, and help you conquer nature's challenges. But just like any loyal companion, they need proper care and attention to continue supporting you for years to come.
Proper care starts with cleaning your boots after every hike. When you return from a hike, take a few minutes to brush off any dirt or debris and remove the laces. This simple act goes a long way in preventing the build-up of grime and maintaining the breathability of your boots.
While cleaning is important, so is allowing your boots to thoroughly dry. After each hike, take out the insoles and let everything air out in a well-ventilated area. If your boots are wet from traversing puddles or streams, stuff them with crumpled newspaper to absorb excess moisture and then air dry them away from direct heat sources.
Waterproofing your boots as needed is another crucial step in maintaining their longevity. Depending on the material, reapply a waterproofing treatment every few months or as per the manufacturer's recommendations.
Equally important is wearing appropriate hiking socks. Quality hiking socks play a key role in preventing blisters and discomfort. Look for moisture-wicking socks made of merino wool or synthetic materials, which help keep your feet dry and reduce friction.
“The term "cotton kills" holds true for socks too. Avoid wearing cotton socks as they tend to retain moisture, leading to blisters and cold feet.”
Breaking in your new hiking boots before embarking on long hikes cannot be stressed enough. Wear them around the house or on short walks to allow the boots to conform to your feet and identify any pressure points that might cause discomfort on longer treks.
And remember, caring for your hiking boots isn't just about maintenance - it's an investment in comfort and safety for all your outdoor pursuits. The more you care for them, the more reliable they'll be when you need them most.
With a solid foundation on maintaining and wearing hiking boots, let's now transition into exploring a detailed breakdown of specialized hiking boot models designed for various outdoor activities.
Specialized Hiking Boots: Model Breakdown
When it comes to selecting the right pair of hiking boots, it's crucial to consider not only the length of your intended outdoor excursions but also the particular terrain and conditions you are likely to encounter. Each style of hiking boot—day hiking boots, backpacking boots, and winter boots—is engineered with distinct features that cater to their respective uses.
Day Hiking Boots
Designed for short jaunts on relatively easy trails, day hiking boots typically prioritize lightness and flexibility without sacrificing support. Their distinguishing traits include:
Lightweight construction for swift movement
Flexible midsoles promoting natural foot movement
Consideration for breathability maintaining comfort during shorter hikes
Backpacking Boots
Conversely, backpacking boots are built for demanding treks with heavier loads and longer durations. These robust companions boast:
Sturdier construction to withstand extended wear and tear
Enhanced ankle support for stability under heavy loads
Rigid outsoles for solid traction on rough terrain
Winter Boots
For journeys in icy and snowy settings, winter boots provide essential warmth and specialized grip. Highlighted features include:
Insulated linings preserving warmth in freezing temperatures
Aggressive treads and waterproofing for secure footing in snow or slush
Supportive midsoles combating fatigue in challenging wintry conditions
Choosing the right footwear can greatly impact your outdoor experience, ensuring comfort, safety, and durability on the trail. Whether it's a brisk day hike or an extended backpacking trip, understanding the unique attributes of each specialized hiking boot empowers you to make informed decisions that align with your adventure goals.
As sturdy as the right pair of hiking boots can make each step through rugged terrains, the cost shouldn't be overlooked when making these important selections. Let's now shift our focus to the financial aspect—considerations for affordability when investing in hiking boots.
Affordability Considerations for Hiking Boots
Tumblr media
When it comes to purchasing hiking boots, it's important to weigh what you're getting for the price. There's a wide array of options, from top-of-the-line boots with all the bells and whistles to more budget-friendly ones that still get the job done. Let's delve into how to ensure you're getting good value without breaking the bank.
First off, consider what kind of hiking you'll be doing and how often you'll be hitting the trails. If you're someone who hikes occasionally or mainly tackles easy, short trails, there's no need to fork out a lot of cash for top-end boots with advanced features catered more towards hardcore hikers. It's okay to start off with a more affordable pair if you're just getting into hiking or if you're unsure how much you'll enjoy it.
For those who plan on taking their hiking game up a notch and are willing to invest in a slightly pricier pair down the line, finding an affordable option is still crucial. While costlier boots often come with higher quality materials and enhanced durability, budget-friendly options are designed to provide good value without skimping on essential features that ensure comfort and support during outdoor excursions.
Our website includes information on budget-friendly options that provide good value without compromising essential features.
Consider this like buying a car. You don't need a fancy sports car if all you're doing is driving around town; a reliable sedan will do just fine. But if you plan on doing a cross-country road trip or want something with extra speed and performance, then splurging on something more luxurious might make sense.
It's also worth noting that even within the budget-friendly realm, there are several options available, each catering to varying budget constraints. As an outdoor enthusiast, you don't have to overspend to find suitable footwear that meets your specific outdoor needs.
By carefully considering what specific features are necessary for your hiking activities and how much use your boots will get, as well as exploring various budget-friendly options available, you can ensure that your investment in a pair of hiking boots provides both excellent value and performance tailored to your adventuring needs.
In summary, finding the right pair of hiking boots doesn't have to entail emptying your wallet. By evaluating your needs and exploring the different options, you can find high-quality footwear without exceeding your budget.

Just hobbled back from a hiking adventure, feeling like a two-legged pack of sore muscles. My trusty Vasque boots finally decided they’d seen enough summits, so I treated myself to a new pair – gotta keep the feet happy! Spent the weekend in Massachusetts, summiting two mountains, and then snuck into the Catskills for a bonus peak. My personal highlight? Camping by Bish Bash Falls – the sound of…
