‘Stardust’ gave him the space to grow
BY MARK OLSEN Los Angeles Times (X)
AUG. 5, 2007
In “Stardust,” the character Tristan Thorne finds himself in the fantastic realm of Stormhold, where he must protect a star, fallen from the sky in the form of a beautiful young woman, from all manner of dangers and pitfalls, including pirates, witches and ruthless princes.
Tristan is played by Charlie Cox, 24, who found himself plunged into a leading role as a romantic foil opposite Claire Danes and alongside such mega-wattage costars as Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer. Yet before he could set off on his magical journey of Hollywood enchantment, Cox faced what turned out to be perhaps the biggest challenge of the role -- simply winning the part.
Director, producer and co-writer Matthew Vaughn first saw Cox on an audition tape the actor had done for another project and didn’t think he fit the part of Thorne. Vaughn, already having seen hundreds of actors for Tristan, eventually gave in to the casting director and agreed to meet Cox. As soon as the young actor entered the room Vaughn knew he’d found his Tristan.
Almost.
As so much of the story revolves around the burgeoning romance between Tristan, a shop boy yearning for a life of adventure, and Yvaine, the fallen star, Vaughn couldn’t fully commit to Cox until he found his leading lady as well.
“The whole point was to find the couple,” explained Cox. “Matthew’s very serious about this. Chemistry on screen, you can’t act it, it’s got to just be there. So he said, ‘I can’t just cast one of you.’ ”
Vaughn knew he was asking a lot of Cox, putting him on the cusp of a big break while also potentially setting him up for a whole lot of nothing.
“I said to poor Charlie, ‘You haven’t got the part until I find Yvaine,’ ” recalled Vaughn, “because it’s about having the right chemistry. I might find an Yvaine and suddenly you’re not right. So I said, ‘You’re going to have to bear with me for a bit.’ And so every time we auditioned the girl, they auditioned with Charlie.”
“Stardust,” based on the book by Neil Gaiman and co-written by Jane Goldman, has a very specific tone and feel, something like a pop-up storybook come to life. Along their way Tristan and Yvaine must fight off a witch who wants to cut out Yvaine’s heart for everlasting life, a set of princes scheming after the jewel around her neck to ascend to the throne of Stormhold, and assorted other extraordinary perils. Grounding this all is the rather sweet, slightly screwball relationship that emerges between Tristan and Yvaine.
As Tristan, Cox somehow manages to walk a tightrope between matinee-idol dashing and puckish whimsy, as the film veers from a childlike innocence to an absurdist, Candide-style picaresque. He largely functions as the audience’s emissary to a world of magic and wonder, where anything might and does happen.
As the story progresses, his character evolves from sweet, simple bumbler to swashbuckling adventure hero. The lack of baggage viewers have toward Cox from previous roles is part of what helps to make his transformation convincing.
“That’s why I wanted an unknown,” said Vaughn. “You genuinely see him grow in front of you without realizing it. If it’s Orlando Bloom all geeked up, you know he’s going to take off his glasses and get a new haircut -- ‘Hey, I’m Orlando, the hero.’
“A lot of people could play the nerd part well, the awkward teen, but couldn’t play the hero. And a lot of people could play the hero well but couldn’t do the nerdy guy.”
A stepped-up challenge
Cox, a London native, dropped out of drama school when he was cast in a small role in “The Merchant of Venice” starring Al Pacino. He would then land a supporting role as the brother of Sienna Miller (a “Stardust” costar) in “Casanova.”
None of his experiences quite prepared him for the physical and emotional challenges of playing the lead in a film such as “Stardust,” where suddenly he was working nearly every single day for four months and sharing major screen time with major stars.
“It really helped my character,” said Cox of his own amazement and bewilderment at finding himself with such a plum role. “In the same way that Tristan is in the story, I’m entering uncharted territory. Every day is something I’ve not experienced before. When I think back on my experiences on the film, and even to some extent doing this stuff” -- and with this he casts both hands around the plush hotel suite in which he is sitting, acknowledging the catered lunch, the inquiring journalist and the small cabal of handlers in the next room -- “I’m bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, a bit like a rabbit in the headlights and trying to keep myself together.”
At the recent Los Angeles premiere of “Stardust,” Cox looked dorkily dapper in a three-piece suit and cheerfully posed for photos with all of his costars. He worked his way down to the farthest reaches of the press line, daring to go where bold-faced names rarely do. He needed to be frequently prodded along by a minder, having not yet mastered the tricky maneuver of the polite but definitive disengagement.
As he entered the lobby of the theater he was greeted by a coterie of the well-wishers and glad-handers who attend such events. Soon after, De Niro and Pfeiffer entered through the same doors and Cox was suddenly swept aside by a celebrity undertow, momentarily lost as the crowd rolled toward his costars.
The Hollywood pecking order has a way of constantly reminding who fits where, but for now Cox is more than happy with what “Stardust” has done for him.
“I know people complain about it, ‘Oh, this junket’s a lot of work,’ ” he said earlier. “But right now, this is what you work toward. I’ve done films where I would have loved to have been asked what it was like to do the movie, how I got the role or how I feel about this business, but I’ve just not been significant enough.”

Movies of 2024 - My Pre-Summer Rundown (Part 1)
The Runners-up:
20. ROAD HOUSE – ranked VERY HIGH INDEED on the list of great movies that really don’t need remaking, Doug Liman’s stab at turning 1989’s beloved original guilty pleasure action-fest into something a bit more modern doesn’t QUITE succeed, but it’s still a whole lot better than it has any right to be. Jake Gyllenhaal’s Dalton is a very different beast from Swayze’s but he is the surprisingly warm heart at the centre of this deeply revisionist take. Ultimately the old one’s STILL the superior film, but this is still a very admirable attempt.
19. ARGYLE – while it ultimately fails to capture the charm of director Matthew Vaughn’s far more enjoyable original Kingsman film, this gloriously DAFT sort-of-meta adaptation of the popular espionage adventure novel is still a whole lot of fun. Bryce Dallas Howard is charmingly nerdy as the author who discovers that the fictional adventures she writes about Henry Cavill’s titular master spy are actually VERY REAL, but the true star of this film is Sam Rockwell as one of the most unlikely action heroes out there …
18. SIXTY MINUTES – Netflix’ razor sharp, super-trim real-time action thriller is a tour-de-force breakneck romp which is sure to provide a major breakout for French writer-director Oliver Kienle (Isi & Ossi, Two Hands). Martial artist Emilio Sakraya shines as Octavio, an MMA fighter who ditches a match in order to attend his daughter’s birthday party, only to find himself fighting his way through various thugs as he races through Paris streets in a desperate bid to make it on time to avoid losing custody of his little girl.
17. I.S.S. – sneaking in largely under the radar, this super-tense sci-fi thriller from director Gabriela Cowperthwaite (Blackfish, Megan Leavey) deserves a lot more attention than it’s likely to get. The International Space Station becomes a microcosm for the world as the sudden eruption of nuclear war between America and Russia leads to a fraught standoff between the astronauts and cosmonauts in orbit. If nothing else, this should be a star-making turn for its lead, Ariana DeBose (Hamilton, Schmigadoon!).
16. GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE – 2021’s Afterlife may have been a clunky misstep in Sony’s attempt to soft-reboot the franchise, but this follow-up definitely gets things RIGHT back on track, delivering a much more interesting and original story and making the new generation of spook-wranglers a good deal more interesting. It’s still a ways short of the quality of the original Ivan Reitman movies (or even the unfairly maligned 2016 movie), but it’s at least good enough to appease us the fans …
15. SOCIETY OF THE SNOW – writer-director J.A. Bayona (The Impossible, A Monster Calls) retells the true story of the desperate battle for survival of the Uruguayan rugby team who crash-landed in the Andes in 1972, previously brought to the screen in Frank Marhsall’s divisive 1993 movie Alive. This is a far more introspective and authentic film, and ultimately proves the superior cinematic account, lending a moving air of poetic beauty to an otherwise harrowing tale of loss and hard-won triumph
14. REBEL MOON, PART TWO: THE SCARGIVER – once again, this is likely more of a placeholder than a true review, since I fully expect to give both movies a far more comprehensive once-over when the Director’s Cuts of Zack Snyder’s two-part overblown sci-fi space opera are finally released. Suffice to say, this is already a MUCH better film than Part One, regardless of what the reviews are saying, so I can only imagine whatever we get in the extended version will only add flavour to what’s already a perfectly decent flick. Honestly, I really LIKE these movies, even in their chopped-down condition they’re far more fun than we really expected them to be, and there’s no escaping the fact that, just like the first half, this is a genuine visual work of art, Snyder again proving that whatever else you might wanna say about him, he really is a master of visual storytelling. We’ll just have to see how the proper FINISHED films turn out, whenever that is …
13. DAMSEL – Millie Bobby Brown shines as a princess shipped to a far-off kingdom to wed a prince in order to save her impoverished land from succumbing to famine, only to discover she’s really being sacrificed to a ferocious dragon. Following the Dragonslayer blueprint of playing medieval fantasy as pure survival horror, this taut suspense thriller from 28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo does a really beautiful job of taking a classic genre trope and turning it on its head in winning style.
12. ORIGIN – both adaptation and biopic, this moving drama from writer-director Ava Duvernay (Selma) tells the true story of journalist and author Isabel Wilkerson (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) while also following her journey as she wrote her incredibly important nonfiction novel Caste: the Origins of Our Discontents. The subsequent film is at once a powerful account of a woman’s struggle to overcome personal grief and a potent treatise on how centuries of systemic racism and elitism have created massive social divides all across the modern world.
11. MONKEY MAN – Dev Patel makes his directorial debut while starring in this wonderfully bizarre action thriller about a poor boy living in Yatana while seeking revenge against the powerful men who destroyed the forest home of his childhood. Touted as an Indian John Wick, this is actually a far more psychologically intriguing film than that, tackling weighty sociopolitical themes with powerful emotional and theological resonance. That being said, the action sequences ARE genuinely spectacular too …

💗 GROWING HEART - if they have a crush, is it noticable? what changes when they're in love?

Movies I watched this Week # 144 (Year 3/Week 40):
“Are you girls ready for the greatest weekend of your life?"
- You say that every weekend! -
"Well, yeah, we’re doing that again”
People, places, things used to be my one of favourite movies to re-watch with Adora 6-7 years ago, as we were all struggling with the dynamics of the similar, sudden changes in our lives. A very sweet Brooklyn Indie about a single dad to cute 6 year old twin daughters. Genuine and delicate romance with sharp dialogue about love and hurt. It was my introduction to a group of ‘minor’ actors I had followed since, Jemaine Clement, Regina Hall, Jessica Williams, Michael Chernus. Feel Good and heart warming. 10/10.
🍿
3 Film Noir with Gloria Grahame:
🍿 The Big heat, Fritz Lang's 1953 paranoid Noir about honest homicide detective Glenn Ford going against all-city police corruption. With young Lee Marvin, playing a creepy “Heavy”, as well as Marlon Brando’s sister. 8/10.
🍿 The following year, Fritz Lang again directed Glenn Ford as a straight up train engineer as he falls again for Gloria Grahame in Human desire. But the woman is not a heartless Femme fatale. She's an abused wife, with a history of being harmed by men her whole life, who can't find any easy way to survive. Based on 'La Bête humaine' by Émile Zola (which I didn't read).
🍿 Re-watch: Nicholas Ray’s In a lonely place. Humphrey Bogart is rage-filled, entitled writer, who becomes a suspect in a murder while falling for Grahame who lives across the courtyard of his Hollywood apartment. A mystery about a dark and self-centered male, who's allowed to be aggravated and aggressive when he doesn't get his way. (Photo Above).
🍿
“Oy! Keep your fingers out of my soup!”
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, my third Guy Ritchie / Matthew Vaughn crime caper. I really don't understand why I resisted checking them out up to now. This, Snatch, Layer cake, all terrific, gritty, multi-layered Tarantino-style black comedies. 8/10.
🍿
2 by French screenwriter Emmanuèle Bernheim, both directed by François Ozon:
🍿 My favorite random discovery of the week: Swimming pool. An erotic thriller with bookish Charlotte Rampling as a middle-aged British author, single and reserved, who travels to a summer villa in Avignon. Like most stories of Northerners in the South of Europe, she falls into a trap of unexpected dreams and desires, when a young promiscuous girl invades her vacation. Ambiguous play of realty and fantasy leaves this a bit of a mystery, like the books she usually writes.
🍿 5X2 is a small story about the disintegration of a middle class marriage, told in reverse order. The first of five episodes, (each lasting exactly 18 minutes), starts at a lawyer's office, reading the terms of the divorce between a husband and wife. And the other chapters go back into other times in the relationship. All the way to the first one years ago when they met at an Italian resort. It's an engaging and bitter-sweet drama, but without any conclusive and clear insights: Yes, love is impossible, sex is unexplained, nobody is at fault.
Between each episode, Italian pop songs from the 1960's comment on the meaning of each move. 7/10.
🍿
Gregory’s Girl, the feel-good Scottish comedy by Bill Forsyth, about an awkward teenager who falls for a soccer playing girl. A wholesome coming-of-age, sweet and charming.
🍿
Martin Scorsese X 2:
🍿In a 25-minutes conversation with GQ, Scorsese breaks down his most iconic films, 'Taxi Driver,' 'Gangs of New York,' 'Goodfellas,' 'The Departed,' 'Raging Bull,' 'The Wolf of Wall Street,' 'Mean Streets,' 'The Irishman,' 'Silence,' and 'Killers of the Flower Moon.
🍿 I wished I had seen Mean Streets decades ago, before all of his other gangster movies; Now I must compare it to 'Goodfellas' and 'Casino'. Obviously it's still a younger filmmaker at the beginning of his mastery of the craft. It's odd to observe De Nero as a total 'Loser', a small time, good for nothing, deadbeat wannabe. A character study more than an action film.
🍿
Ram Dass, going home, a quiet documentary about spiritual "guru" Baba Ram Dass at the end of his life, dispensing ancient words of wisdom as he reflects on life and death at his home in Maui. Sagely, meditatively, peacefully, it's a simple and peaceful poem of spirituality.
🍿
3 classic comedies:
🍿 The bank dick, WC Fields as Egbert Sousé, a goofy drunk. Written by his alias Mahatma Kane Jeeves, filmed and presented in Lompoc, CA, and much of the story centered around The Black Pussy Cat bar. It ends with a hilarious car race that is both wild and hilarious.
🍿 First watch: Buster Keaton’s last great film, the 1928 The Cameraman. "The worst mistake of his life" he called it, because with his move to MGM and various studio politics, he lost his ability to control his productions. Agile and romantic.
🍿 Triple trouble is an unusual Charlie Chaplin 2-reeler from 1918. It combines a number of primitive Chaplin-directed scenes, which were edited by Essaney Studio, against his wishes, as he left them to form his own. A patchwork of pratfalls, slapstick, and visual jokes, that don't form a coherent story.
🍿
The trailer for the restored Belle De Jour tempts me to watch this subversive masterpiece again and again!
🍿
An experimental short by infamous Danish surrealist artist Wilhelm Freddie, (together with Jørgen Roos) Eaten horizons. 21 years after Buñuel‘s ‘Andalusian Dog’, it demonstrates unfiltered inspiration from the master.
🍿
While waiting for his ‘Zone of interest’, here is Jonathan Glazer’s banned commercial for Cadbury’s Flake chocolate. Recently I watched the many commercials he directed on his old YouTube channel, (for example, his Guinness black swim),
but now I also saw his music videos, which he directed between his four features. 33 in total. "Today I learnt" that I don’t care much for music videos.
🍿

Reviews of The Godfather 4
Original review published in the Washington Weekend Review by contributing writer Aurthur Idle
"The Godfather 4" is a true masterpiece, a film that will leave you breathless from start to finish. This highly anticipated sequel to the iconic "Godfather" series, is nothing short of spectacular. The film brings back the beloved character of Fredo, who this time around returns as a cocaine addicted ghost seeking revenge on his brother Michael.
The performances of the cast are outstanding, with special praise going to Vincent D'Onofrio for his portrayal of a haunted Fredo. The chemistry between the characters is electric, making for an intense and emotional viewing experience. The film also showcases some stunning visual effects, with the ghostly apparitions of Fredo being particularly haunting.
Coppola has done an incredible job of weaving together elements of the past "Godfather" films with fresh and exciting new elements, creating a film that both honors the legacy of the series and stands on its own as a thrilling piece of cinema. The film's script is tight and well-crafted, delivering both heart-wrenching moments and intense action sequences.
Overall, "The Godfather 4" is a must-see film for fans of the series and newcomers alike. This film truly delivers on all fronts and is a testament to the power of great storytelling, incredible performances, and masterful filmmaking. It is a film that will stay with you long after the credits have rolled, and one that you'll be eager to see again and again.
Review published in New York Film Magazine by Alastire Iamovich
"The Godfather 4" is a highly anticipated and masterful sequel to the iconic "Godfather" series that will leave you breathless from start to finish. One of the standout scenes in the film is when Fredo's ghost, created as a hologram of the late John Cazale, confronts Michael in a truly unforgettable moment. This scene is a tour de force, elevating the film to new heights and showcasing the incredible talent of the cast and crew.
The scene opens with Michael, played by Vincent D'Onofrio, sitting at his desk, seemingly lost in thought. Suddenly, the room is filled with a ghostly apparition, that of Fredo, who materializes before Michael holding an oar from the canoe in which he was killed. The visual effects in this scene are stunning, with the hologram of Fredo being particularly haunting. The attention to detail in this scene is simply amazing, with the filmmakers doing an incredible job of bringing Fredo's ghost to life in a truly believable manner.
The scene is a tour de force for Vince Vaughn, who delivers a powerful performance as Fredo's ghost. The actor brings an incredible depth of emotion to the role, making this one of the most unforgettable moments in the film. The tension between Michael and Fredo's ghost is palpable, as the two characters face off in a confrontation that is equal parts emotional and intense.
Fredo's ghost is a force to be reckoned with, and his lines in this scene are nothing short of electrifying. "We could have been selling blow together in Miami, spending every night at the most luxurious nightclubs, but you had to be a loser family fuck." This line is delivered with such raw emotion and intensity that it is sure to be one of the most quoted lines from the film.
Overall, this scene is a testament to the power of great storytelling, incredible performances, and masterful filmmaking. The filmmakers have done an incredible job of weaving together elements of the past "Godfather" films with fresh and exciting new elements, creating a film that both honors the legacy of the series and stands on its own as a thrilling piece of cinema. If you're a fan of the "Godfather" series or just a lover of great cinema, this film is a must-see.
Film analysis published in the PsiSee media journal by Anna Island
"The Godfather 4" can be approached from a psychoanalytic perspective, drawing on the works of thinkers like Slavoj Zizek and the insights of Hegel and Walter Benjamin. The film can be seen as a meditation on the nature of desire, guilt, and the ways in which these forces shape our relationships with ourselves and others.
From a Zizekian perspective, the film can be seen as a parable about the ways in which our desires shape our reality. Fredo's ghostly apparition can be read as a manifestation of his unfulfilled desires and the guilt that he feels as a result of his past actions. The confrontation between Fredo and Michael can be seen as a symbolic struggle between the desires of the id and the demands of the superego, with Fredo's ghost representing the return of repressed desires that are now haunting Michael.
Walter Benjamin's ideas about the "aura" of an object and its capacity to evoke emotional responses can also be applied to the film. The ghostly apparition of Fredo can be seen as a powerful evocation of the "aura" of the original "Godfather" films, calling forth a sense of nostalgia and emotional connection to the past. At the same time, the film's use of modern special effects to create this ghostly apparition can be seen as an attempt to disrupt this aura, and to explore the ways in which technology has changed our relationship to the past.
Hegel's insights into the dialectic of history can also be applied to the film. The conflict between Fredo and Michael can be seen as a struggle between different historical forces, with each character representing a different moment in the development of the Godfather family. In this sense, the film can be seen as a meditation on the ways in which history shapes our desires and our sense of guilt.
Overall, "The Godfather 4" is a film that invites us to explore the complex psychological forces that shape our relationships with ourselves and others. Whether seen through the lens of Zizekian psychoanalysis, the ideas of Walter Benjamin, or the insights of Hegel, this film is a powerful work of art that will challenge and inspire its viewers.

Acotar characters as some of my fave lgbtq+ tv characters
in spite of all the homophobia this week i would like to push this gay agenda further. enjoy.
Rhys: Eric Northman, True Blood
Rhys and Eric both are the hottest and most powerful motherfuckers. They have a very select few who they love with everything they have and would straight up set the world on fire if anyone threatened what they loved. 18/10 would go under the mountain or the backwoods of Shreveport for these men.
Feyre: Rosa Diaz, Brooklyn 99
Both Feyre and Rosa present a tough exterior to the world, but when they love you they love you with everything they have. Both are loyal and fierce women, but are willing to get vulnerable with those they trust. 17/10 If anything happened to them I would kill everyone in this room and then myself.
Amren: Raphael Santiago, Shadowhunters
Amren and Raphael are both arrogant and condescending due to their age and power. Despite these flaws they are people of their word and respect others who are the same. If you betray them it’s usually the last thing you ever do. 11/10 would avoid all social gatherings with them any time.
Cassian: Jesper Fahey, Shadow & Bone
Cassian and Jesper appear sarcastic and fun loving at first glance, but there’s depth and pain behind their flirtatious comments and silly banter. They desire a real connection with someone who’s their equal in every way. 15/10 would plan a heist with them any day.
Nesta: Pam Swynford de Beaufort, True Blood
Both Nesta and Pam are powerful women who proudly wear the title of bitch. They’re loyal to a select few and would kill for or die for them without question. Both women have a very tough outer shell that takes a long time to penetrate, but once you do their hearts are beautiful and fierce. 19/10 would go to hell and have a three-way with the devil with them.
Elain: Jules Vaughn, Euphoria
Elain and Jules are cheerful and kind, but have a strong backbone and refuse to be pushed around. Like Jules, Elain will need to go through a journey of self discovery. It won’t be easy and she may stumble a time for two, but eventually it will lead her to finding out who she is and what she wants from life. 13/10 would get on a train and run away to the city with them.
Lucien: Oberyn Martell, Game of Thrones
Lucien and Oberyn are both sunshine babes. They would go into the depths of hell to right a wrong done to someone they loved. They enjoy a fun time, but make extremely deadly opponents. 17/10 would protect their eyes with my life.
Azriel: Wolfgang Bogdanow, Sense8
Azriel and Wolfie both have very difficult childhoods that they have endured and are constantly trying to overcome. They love fiercely and are loyal to a fault. They may not always have the most healthy mindsets, but would willingly walk through hell for the ones they love. 14/10 would shoot a bazooka at any baddies for them.
Gwyn: Amanita Caplan, Sense8
Gwyn and Amanita are both strong and loyal women who would face any danger in order to protect their loved ones. They are kind and gentle people, but are not afraid to fuck shit up if someone they love is in danger. 16/10 would go to war with these ladies by my side any day.
Emerie: Bill Potts, Doctor Who
Emerie and Bill are both smart and inquisitive women. They yearn for adventure and excitement. While both women struggle with a sexist society they are not afraid to be bold and let it be known that they will not accept anything less than respect. 17/10 would go traveling through time and space with these ladies.
Mor: Sara Lance, Legends of Tomorrow
While Mor and Sara are trained warriors, both are dorks at heart. These women are natural leaders and would do anything for someone they loved. They both bare scars from their past, but neither let them define who they are. 14/10 would kick your ass without breaking a sweat.
Helion: Lito Rodriguez, Sense8
Both Helion and Lito are dramatic af, demand the spotlight to be on them at all times and enjoy a good orgy. Loyal and brave, they would fight for the ones they love even if that meant putting themselves in danger. 18/10 would let them drunk dial me if they lost their flip flop.
Tamlin: Cal Jacobs, Euphoria
Tamlin and Cal are both obsessed with appearances and wanting to present as alpha males. While the public see a hetero man, they’re getting down in dirty motel rooms with other dudes. 4/10 no homo.
