"You know we were starting to think he made you up." Viola's smile grew slowly as she came down the stairs to see that her brother and his fiancee had finally arrived. She had to admit she was surprised her brother had managed to date someone so gorgeous, let along get her to agree to marry him but they were twins after all so she couldn't deny the genes of good looks were strong. Though she'd argue hers were stronger. "And you didn't fling yourself out of the car on the way up to our humble abode? 5 hours in the car with him? Sheesh, you are a trooper." She greeted her brother with a tight hug before turning to his fiancee, hesitating before reaching out to pull her into a hug. "Welcome to our humble abode. I don't actually live here anymore but I mooch off my parents as much as I can," she joked as she pulled back and met her eyes. "You look like you could use a drink, am I right?"

“Made just the way you like,” Viola told Ottilie as she set the plate in front of her with a grin. It had been a while since she was able to have anyone over for dinner as Rune worked on his recovery. That and Viola had generally just been a mess over it which had led to the house being a bit of a mess as well. But she had deep cleaned over the weekend, gotten Rune to some appointments and had set up a good network of care so someone could always be around in the house with Rune while she was at work or running errands. But Vi was slowly but surely trying to re-connect with all of her favorite people, especially the younger ones who had Viola had started to bring into her orbit of care. Ottilie had always been a bit resistant, reminding Viola far too much of her older self and it only made her want to show her love more. “I saw Apollo at the grocery store earlier today, says you’re still his number one employee,” Viola teased with a wink as she went back to the stove to serve herself and give Ottilie a chance to enjoy the meal without her prying eyes on her. “I think Stevie has missed you the most though,” she teased, glancing at the dog who was had very happily settled at the foot of Ottilie’s chair. “You want something to drink? Our fridge is fully stocked again now that I’m only half the mess I was.”

because she was so little when she moved to town, she’s always felt like a shrike lifer.

because it was only herself and her mom growing up, and because her mom was a hardworking nurse, ellis was a lonely child. 

the loneliness didn’t manifest much sadness, however, it only encouraged extroversion that helped her to fill the void.

ellis was well liked, but she wasn’t popular in school. she could have been, but her priorities were different to most of her peers - that she knew of, at least. 

she always worked extremely hard, both to help her mom, and to make her mom proud. her mom had high expectations only because ellis set the bar so high in trying to prove to her mom that everything she had worked for was worth it.

amongst the chaos of working hard, however, ellis still managed to have fun and live a good life, particularly with the addition of viola lancaster in her life.

the two began as best friends, ride or dies, and developed into more than friends in their teens. with viola, and additionally, her brother, ellis felt like her family of two grew to be a full family unit. she loved spending time with them. 

the relationship was serious, but unfortunately it didn’t last. there were many factors involved in the end of it, both of their separate troubles, some self sabotaging from viola, ellis’ fear of ruining the best thing she had ever had if she pushed too hard, but even though they went their separate ways the love and care remained. 

what didn’t remain was ellis. she left town after their breakup, following a job lead from a friend who was a personal trainer, deciding to go because after the dramatic change of the loss of her relationship with viola, she had a lot to figure out for herself and her life. 

she always missed home, but found great opportunities and experiences outside of shrike heights. she’s always been able to find silver linings, and alter bad situations for them to be for the better, and she definitely did that in her time away. 

when the attacks began in shrike heights, ellis began to visit for weekends more often, checking in on her mom and her loved ones. though she didn’t reconnect with viola again, it was the news that viola’s brother was attack that sent her back to town for good, without hesitation.

Somebody pinch me, I might faint!” Alma imitated the sound of a crowd, hands cupped around her mouth as she slowed down her skateboard once she got closer to where Rune was. It had been Rune who had enough patience to teach her how to skate when they were younger and now she used it as an excuse to bother him whenever she could. And also a way to get her work when her mom had the car. “Not to be a hater but you almost just ate shit on that last one, just saying.” Alma smiled sweetly to let him know she was just messing with him though that was pretty much how she treated the people she loved most. “How long have you been out here? Not long enough to leave yet, right? I was hoping I’d catch you here. And also that you’d eventually invite me over for dinner. I saw Viola in the supermarket earlier and she looked like she was going to make a feast.”

The Age of Extinction: Flowers ‘Giving Up’ On Scarce Insects And Evolving To Self-Pollinate, Say Scientists

French wild pansies are producing smaller flowers and less nectar than 20 to 30 years ago in ‘startling’ act of evolution, study shows

Flowers are “giving up on” pollinators and evolving to be less attractive to them as insect numbers decline, researchers have said.

A study has found the flowers of field pansies growing near Paris are 10% smaller and produce 20% less nectar than flowers growing in the same fields 20 to 30 years ago. They are also less frequently visited by insects.

“Our study shows that pansies are evolving to give up on their pollinators,” said Pierre-Olivier Cheptou, one of the study’s authors and a researcher at the French National Centre for Scientific Research. “They are evolving towards self-pollination, where each plant reproduces with itself, which works in the short term but may well limit their capacity to adapt to future environmental changes.”

Plants produce nectar for insects, and in return insects transport pollen between plants. This mutually beneficial relationship has formed over millions of years of coevolution. But pansies and pollinators may now be stuck in a vicious cycle: plants are producing less nectar and this means there will be less food available to insects, which will in turn accelerate declines.

“Our results show that the ancient interactions linking pansies to their pollinators are disappearing fast,” said lead author Samson Acoca-Pidolle, a doctoral researcher at the University of Montpellier. “We were surprised to find that these plants are evolving so quickly.”

Insect declines have been reported by studies across Europe. One study on German nature reserves found that from 1989 to 2016 the overall weight of insects caught in traps fell by 75%. Acoca-Pidolle added: “Our results show that the effects of pollinator declines are not easily reversible, because plants have already started to change. Conservation measures are therefore urgently needed to halt and reverse pollinator declines.”

The method used in the study is called “resurrection ecology”. It involved germinating ancestral pansy plants from seeds collected in the 1990s and 2000s, which were being stored in the national botanical conservatories. The team compared how four populations of field pansies (Viola arvensis) had changed during this period.

Other than changes to the flowers, they found no other changes between the populations, such as the leaf size or total size of the plant, according to the paper, published in the journal New Phytologist.

If flowers are not likely to attract insects, then a plant is wasting energy making them large and nectar-rich. Previous research has shown the percentage of field pansies relying on self-pollination has increased by 25% over the past 20 years.

“This is a particularly exciting finding as it shows evolution happening in real time,” said Dr Philip Donkersley, from Lancaster University, who was not involved in the study.

“The fact that these flowers are changing their strategy in response to decreasing pollinator abundance is quite startling. This research shows a plant undoing thousands of years of evolution in response to a phenomenon that has been around for only 50 years.

“Although most research has been done in Europe and North America, we know that pollinator declines are a global phenomenon. These results may just be the tip of the iceberg: areas with far greater plant diversity will likely have many more examples of wild plants changing their pollination strategies in response to a lack of pollinators.”

Similar processes can be seen in invasive populations that need to adapt new ecological niches. Populations of foxglove have evolved to be pollinated by bumblebees in Europe. However, 200 years ago they were introduced to Costa Rica and Colombia, and they have since changed the shape of their flowers so they can be pollinated by hummingbirds, researchers found.

Other research shows plants that are unable to self-pollinate go the other way, producing more pollen when pollinators are scarce. Because they cannot resort to other methods, they have to outcompete other plants to attract a shrinking number of pollinators.

Prof Phil Stevenson, from Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, who was also not involved in the research, said it made sense that traits that guide or reward pollinators are likely to change when the number of pollinators drops, especially among species that have the option of self-pollinating.

“This is especially so for reproduction,” he said, “which is arguably the most important living function of organisms and likely the most adaptive trait of all.”

Sabina Lancaster, Watcher of Caed Nua

Really loves singing, though more as a hobby then a profession like the Chanters

Every lie she tells eats away at her soul, she cannot stand being deceptive, even if it gets her into bad situations. When lying is unavoidable, however, she finds she is really, really good at it. That she's so good at selling falsehoods is part of what disturbs her about it.

She has two brothers, one older and one younger, and a younger sister. Of the four of them, she was definitely the most adventurous, and it often got her into trouble.

She really misses her siblings, and part of why she likes talking to Pallegina is bc it reminds her of when she used to gossip with her sister

Viola, the Dark Urge

As it turns out, understanding the human body's anatomy on as deep a level as The Urge provides lends itself quite well to sketching. One of the only possessions she woke up with on the nautiloid was a tattered sketchbook to the point of being unrecognizable, and one of the first things she did when she got to the Grove was buy a new one, which she uses on her adventures

She has a giggle that lies somewhere between the sound of a goose honking and a balloon being slowly deflated.

At the beginning of the story, her sense of taste was out of whack, as in some food would taste other than it should or simply lack flavor altogether, and she has to slowly regain her sense of taste as the story goes on

Killer hand drum player, once he gets going he busts out beats like you'd never believe. Not that he'd ever let anyone know that, of course. He has a reputation to uphold, you understand.

While the Myconid Circle he grew up in was not the one we see in the game, he was familiar with that Circle and his presence in the group made passing through the underdark much easier.

Isn't quite as mean as everyone makes him out to be, he's just very comfortable being flippantly mean in, what he thinks, a lighthearted way that actually comes out off very harshly. This is why he basically only gets along with Halsin, Jaheira, and Lae'zel, because the first can see through his exterior and is touched by his love of the natural world, the second sees the attempt at banter for what it is and plays along, and the third has been dealing with militarized githyanki her whole life and is unfazed by him (though he cuts it out with Lae'zel once they become something more serious)

As many times as Viola had feared a day like this, none of that fear had prepared her for what it would actually feel like. The call had come from a childhood friend of hers who now worked as a nurse at the hospital. She had seen Rune being brought in and had immediately called before they could even get through his ID work and calling his emergency contact. So when that official call came, the phone just shook on the receiver as Viola drove as fast as she could without being reckless. She had been in her right mind enough to drop Stevie off with a neighbor before running out of the house and she tried to keep her hands still against the wheel. 

"It looks like he's lost a lot of blood, Vi…" 

Her friends voice echoed in her head and she swallowed back the knot in her throat, the tears and sob that wanted to release itself so desperately. Her little brother, her absolute everything. Rune. 

She pressed the gas even more and pulled into a parking spot, barely remembering to turn off the car before she ran inside. In the years before Rune had legally changed his name to Lancaster, she had to fight just to be with him at his appointments or every time  they had to come get him patched up after a bad fall during skating. She knew how weird it was to see a young blonde white girl strolling in and claiming that this young Thai boy was her brother. Even with how many people knew her in town, it had been a battle to be recognized as his guardian. His family. So she was always prepared for a fight but her friend was already waiting for her by the desk and took her to sit outside of the room they would take Rune back to after looking him over and assessing if he'd need surgery. The waiting time felt like light years and the sorry looks the nurses gave her as they wheeled him into the room broke her heart. She tried her hardest to focus on what the doctor was saying, even writing it down so she could remember but all of it felt blurry until it was just her, the sound of his monitors and and an unconscious Rune lying in front of her. 

It was then that she allowed herself to cry, her tears falling hard as she took his hand. "I'm so sorry," she repeated over and over as if it were her fault, as if she had failed to protect him. The guilt was fucking her up but the sight of him was even worse. His arm was so heavily bandaged she could barely see it and the bruises and cuts along his body were hard not to notice. She brushed her fingers through his hair and kisses his face as best as she could, staying close to him as she cried. Hours and hours more passed but she had barely moved an inch. Her friend came to bring her coffee, to hold her for a moment but it was only when Viola was finally drifting to sleep in a chair hours and hours later that she heard Rune stir and she was immediately by his side, hoping that if she was the first thing he saw when he woke up that he would know he was safe. She didn't even have any words as she saw his eyes flutter open, just a squeeze to his hand and patience as he started to wake up and likely recall what had just happened to him. She had so many questions but she knew the time for that would come.

To say the day had been lovely would have been an understatement. Viola had thought her 33rd had been great but standing in her house now, with her favorite people surrounding her dinner table was definitely going to be her new favorite memory. The day had been easy and with Danny by her side she had been able to actually enjoy herself. She had been a bit nervous about having everyone over. All of her worlds colliding and their house being the most full it had been since before Rune's attack. She hadn't wanted him to feel overwhelmed but she also knew he would be sadder if she didn't celebrate the way she wanted. Still, as folks were mingling and pouring drinks, she slid her arm around her brothers, smiling as they stood off to the side, watching Stevie sniff around the backyard. "When he comes back in and sees how many people are here, he's going to go on a crazy butt sniffing frenzy," she joked and lay her head gently on Rune's shoulder. "You okay?"
