#voter id's
Text
There are things I disagree with the anti-sjw side of tumblr on. I think breastfeeding in public is ok. I never understood how this was controversial tbh.
Voting id’s are not necessarily a good idea.  Yes, the libs reasoning for it is dumb and the conservatives claim it will prevent election fraud. But in reality it will only further the surveillance state. And that’s something we need less of.

Don't Lose Your Vote! UK Edition
A snap general election could be called any day. This will be the first general election that requires photo ID if you vote at the polls (postal votes 📫 are unaffected by the Election Act 2022).
If you don't have an approved form of identification (list here), you can apply for a FREE voter ID photo card. Find out more below or use these 5 minutes to register and get your ID sorted instead ❎ because, and this is important to know, the government really doesn't want young people to vote.
The Explanation
Rishi Sunak, UK Prime Minister and Leader of the Conservative Party, may call a snap election in 2023. (A snap election is a vote brought in earlier ⏱ than the one that’s scheduled 🕐) The UK’s next general election (for MPs and the PM) is meant to happen between December 2024 and January 2025.
A snap election happens in as little as 25 days 😨 between the announcement (aka the PM asking the House of Commons’ to approve the dissolution of Parliament) and the vote 🏃‍♀️
You must be registered to vote - currently over 8 million people are not. Unlike other a democratic countries, the UK doesn’t automatically register all eligible voters. You have to do this yourself. Here’s a quick reminder of how to register:
youtube
Over the past 15 years, it has gotten harder for British citizens to vote:
Families can no longer register to vote as a household 🏡 so young voters must register themselves (Cameron Govt)
Colleges and universities are barred from registering students 👨‍🎓 (Cameron Govt)
The Elections Act requires photo ID 🤳 for anyone voting in person (Johnson Govt)
Local elections (for city and town governments) in 2023 were the first votes that required VOTER ID. According to the Electoral Commission, over 14,000 people were turned away from the polls because they had not heard about the change.
The House of Lords tried to amend the Elections Act before it passed, to include more common types of ID, such as bank statements, bills, student ID, library cards and much more. This amendment was struck down in the House of Commons. A lot of the IDs included in the approved list are more likely to be owned by older voters than younger ones. For example, a 60+ Oyster Card is acceptable ID but an 18+ Oyster Card is not.
Here’s the important thing to know: voters who don’t have a driving licence or passport or other approved forms of ID, can apply for a free voter ID photo card. Watch the video below to find out how!
youtube
And finally, please, for the love of our democracy, vote.
"Democracy is not something you believe in or a place to hang your hat, but it's something you do. You participate. If you stop doing it, democracy crumbles." Abbie Hoffman

“In a society where there is no ID-card system, requiring voters to prove their identities to solve a non-existent problem and using a narrow range of documentation is deliberately designed to stop poorer voters accessing their democratic rights.”

UK general election postal voters read this!
Edit: this was apparently part the election act 2022 law, that changed how long you can stay signed up for general elections postal votes.
The max now is only 3 years. If you've been on that long you Will have to reconfirm with the update from.
If you receive a update form please read it carefully, and if it says you need to send it back do so to stay on the list.
(People who have received these have been given less than 2 weeks to do so).
Sorry about the confusion, but this worried me and lot of my friends.
Left it below so people can see what this was about.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey heads up the UK post vote detail info update forms NEED to be sent back this time even if there's no changes!
If you don't you'll be removed from the post vote list!
This is awful as it's the accessibility option for most people & needs no photo ID.
This is a link to what types of ID are accepted if you don't manage to send it back in time.

Good news in voting rights coming out of Montana! 🎉
Yesterday, the Montana Supreme Court struck down four major voter suppression laws passed in 2021, which:
🔹Eliminated same-day voter registration in most cases
🔹Made it more difficult to vote with a student ID
🔹Outlawed absentee ballots for new voters who would turn 18 by Election Day
🔹Banned paid ballot collection and reduced other forms of ballot return assistance
The Court’s decision is a MAJOR victory for Montana voters, specifically Native American voters, young voters, and voters with disabilities who would be disproportionately impacted by these laws.

I am trying not to be too worried about the 2024 election but literally every day my brain reminds me that we are one day closer to finding out if this is the year we decide to continue working on climate change and gun control and immigration and abortion and student loan debt relief and other important issues, or if this is the year we decide we’re going to be another 4 years too late

civic duty
went to vote today. local elections, mostly uncontested.
it was so crowded, i did not expect that.
the man directly in front of me got mad when the people dispensing the ballots asked his name and then asked him to verify his address and date of birth. "That's personal information!" he exclaimed. "You have no right to ask me for that!"
"We have to verify your identity," the election worker said, stunned. "That's how this works."
"You're denying me my right to vote!" the man shouted.
"We-- have to figure out which voter you are," the election worker said. "I don't need to see ID or anything, i just need you to confirm for me which address you're at, and then which person by that name that resides at that address, so I can see if that matches our rolls, so I can make sure I'm dispensing a ballot to the right person."
"I was trained as an election worker!" the man shouted. "I know you have no right to demand personal information from me!"
"Well i can't give you a ballot if I can't verify which voter you are," the election worker said.
"I'm calling the cops!" the man shouted.
"By all means," the election worker said, "but please step outside to do so. I recommend you call the downtown cops, not just the emergency line, as they'll be more knowledgeable."
So the man went outside. I gave the workers my name, my address so they could find me, and confirmed my date of birth, since it seemed perfectly reasonable to me that often more than one person with the same name might reside at a particular address, and they gave me my ballot and I went and voted. When I went outside the man was still on the phone, yelling. "They have no right to demand personal information of me!"
That information is public record, my dude. And it's how they registered you to vote in the first place. And it's how you're organized in the voter rolls.

Sarah Jones and Jason Easley at PoliticusUSA's The Daily Substack:
The Trump and Mike Johnson press conference at Mar-a-Lago barely lasted 20 minutes, and what the event might be remembered for isn’t Trump’s various lies about abortion, immigration, or even the value of Mar-a-Lago. Something Mike Johnson said in just a few minutes signaled how Trump plans to handle a potential 2024 election loss.
Johnson said: [You need to understand something, since the 1993 National Voter Registration Act, the motor voter law, allows people to sign up to vote. If an individual averts or states they are a citizen, they don't have to prove it, they can register that person to vote in a federal election. States are prohibited from asking someone to prove that they are a citizen. The federal voter registration form has a check box. If you do that, you're good. That is a serious problem. And what we are going to do is, house Republicans are introducing a bill that will require proof of citizenship to vote. It seems like common sense. All of us would agree we want U.S. Citizens to vote in U.S. Elections. But there are some Democrats who don't want to do that. One of their reasons for this open board that everyone asked, why would they do this? Why the violence? They want to turn these people into voters. Right now, the administration is encouraging illegals to go to the local welfare office to sign up for benefits. When you go to the welfare office they ask you if you would like to register to vote. Many people, we think are going to do that. If the numbers are so high, so many millions of illegals in the country, one out of a hundred, they would cast thousands of votes, that could turn an election. This could impact congressional elections in the country. It could affect the presidential election.] [...]
Johnson and Trump Are Going To Claim That Illegal Immigrants Stole The Election For Biden
Johnson was the architect of the House scheme to block the certification of the 2020 election. He likely won’t be the Speaker of the House when the next election is certified, but what he is doing is creating a path for Trump to challenge the 2024 results in every swing state that he loses. Trump will claim that any swing state that uses motor voter registration that he lost was full of illegal votes for Biden. Trump will demand that the election not be certified, and that all of the swing states that Biden won be thrown out. Johnson knows that a national voter ID law will make it much more difficult for some Democratic leaners to vote, and that the bill that he and Trump are proposing is dead in the water, so the tactic will be to challenge every state that Biden won that is considered a swing state by claiming that illegal voters voted for Biden.
On Friday, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and 2024 GOP nominee Donald Trump trafficked in the lie motor voter registration caused "illegal votes" for President Joe Biden to be tallied in a bid to cause 2020 2.0 in which Trump lied about the election results to falsely declare himself the victor.

Build A Cowboy Round 5!
Hi good evening sorry for vanishing OK SO i mentioned in the tags of my first poll that this cowboy is not just going to be a vaguely historical cowboy, but from a Very specific time frame, because of the fic that his partner Javi exists in. That being said, there is a lot to unpack here with this! The time period exactly is 1841, the setting is Texas (because I am texan and we are predictable) and oh my god this is one of the most insane times for a character to be from texas 😭
Our cowboy will have in fact lived through the Mexican War of Independence (1810-1821), the Texas Revolution (1835-1836), tx's CRINGEFAIL attempt at self governing, rapidly approaching our annexation into the US in 1844-5, and then coming right up on the fuckign CIVIL WAR in 1861. These guys deeply understand the concept of "get me the fuck out of the interesting times, im sick of the interesting times". im so sorry cowboys, you can blame Herman Melville for this.
anyways yall didnt come here for a history lesson but you are in fact going to get one because i am insufferable first and an artist second :) and also as a note, race and backstory are always intertwined things but Especially when it is fuckign 1841 so. yeah exercise caution, there will be discussion of racism, medical close-calls, and anti-indigenous genocide. PLEASE ACTUALLY READ THE BACKGROUNDS BEFORE CHOOSING ONE! you dont have to read the sources. those are just there because i have autism. 👍

DETAILS BELOW THE READMORE BC I GOT WAYYY TOO WORDY⬇️
BACKSTORY A: Black Cowboy fled Texas* to Oklahoma with his family after the revolution, now travels up the trade routes breaking wild horses, passing along abolitionist messages, and assisting refugees. A miracle baby surviving a cleft lip with limited surgery and sustained permanent hearing damage as a result, he took up the trade of horsebreaking with flying colors, keeping right up with his older brothers. A sharp shot, keen eye, and a talented horseman, his best trained horses help him identify sounds that he otherwise can't hear. Loosely familiar with PSL, but primarily used a mix of lip-reading, localized/community generated sign growing up.
* After the US aided Texas in staging a coup against Mexico and declaring independence, an ordinance passed in 1836 that fully banished free Black people from the region unless they had personal pardon from Congress. This ordinance was not passed without pushback, and it changed shape and restriction over the years as people of color such as Joseph Tate, John and Charity Bird, Diana Leonard, Allen Dimery, and more all fought for their right to their own lands and lives. The law eventually settled into what was known as the Ashworth Act in 1840, which allowed free Black people to stay IF they had been residing in the state before 1836. It certainly wasn't the victory many had hoped, and even though many free Black persons in Texas were granted pardon to stay, like the Ashworths who the act was named after, many others were forced to leave after their allotted time was up, and were threatened with the future of slavery should they return. thank you texas history for being a vile piece of shit 👍
BACKSTORY B: Mexican/Tejano Vaquero from West Texas whose family has been ranching and cattle driving for decades. Has no interest in moving post-revolution, fuck you very much. If the borders are going to cross his family without asking*, then there's no need to cross them back. Technically lives with his family, but spends extensive periods of time away from home on cattle drives. Steady-handed, steadfast, quick to keep his herd safe. Miraculously survived a cleft lip as a baby and sustained permanent hearing damage** as a result, but that didn't stop his father from teaching him everything he knew, nor our man from taking to it like a fish to water. Knows more about cattle driving than you will ever forget.
*Some brief notes on the borders shifting and alienating people in their own rightful land.
**There was no official sign language of Mexico until the first Deaf school was established in 1869, but he and his family likely have a community-based one that works for them.
BACKSTORY C: Coahuiltecan (specifically Payaya)* cowboy, farrier, and leatherworker. Picked up the line of work as family was pushed to assimilate, one of the few still claiming Coahuiltecan identity at this time**, and has made a good living for himself and his sisters with it. Like the others, miraculously survived a cleft lip as a child but sustained permanent hearing damage as a result. Knows Plains Indian Sign fluently, and also relies on the direction of his horse for picking up sudden sounds before he can spot them. Tries to keep his work as local as possible to avoid separation from family for long, and whenever that is necessary, makes sure to come back soon.
*Note: Coahuiltecan is a term referring to several northern-Mexican and southern-Texan autonomous groups with distinct cultural differences. However, since Spanish and French colonizers lumped these groups together, an immense amount of distinguishing knowledge has since been lost.
** Also note: the Tāp Pīlam Coahuiltecan Nation is still very much around today (check out their site!) but nearing the mid 19th century, people at least claiming/listing this heritage on legal documents dwindled immensely for a variety of reasons.

Ok so, if you're in the UK you may or may not know that you need photo ID to vote starting in May (aka the next elections). The promotion has been atrocious so far (either that or it's just my local council that's awful, which I severely doubt), so I've made some graphics to explain what you need to do (what photo ID you can use, what to do if you have none, how to get a Voter Recognition Certificate, shit like that). Please share them everywhere so people know how to vote!
Versions with light backgrounds in a reblog, since I can only share ten images at a time.
