May 29, 2023 - Monday - Memorial Day
3 day weekend well spent, Alhamdulillah! The first two days, I did hardcore grading + event logistics. Third day (today) I ran out of steam lol and spent the whole day tending to plants (indoors and outdoors) and trying to figure out how to paint them. It was such a healing time tbh. It reminded me about The Secret Garden and the healing magic of gardening 🥺✨

Do you guys notice how when Shawn Fain, president of the United Auto Workers union, started planning a general strike, he did it by a) targeting his messaging towards unions with the ability to safely and effectively strike in large numbers, b) laid out a clear, actionable plan for those unions to follow (setting contracts to all expire at the same time, since many unions cannot strike while under contract), c) is using union contracts to set clear, actionable demands that can be met in order to gauge success and provide an end goal, and d) started organizing FOUR YEARS before the proposed strike date to give people the chance to plan accordingly, because it takes a really freaking long time to get tens of millions of people organized?
You notice how he didn't do it by slapping a message on Twitter saying 'hey nobody go to work on Monday, that'll really show 'em'?

I was waiting for something and wound up watching part of an episode of the Apprentice UK and discovered a new fun fact about myself: watching people who claim to be good at negotiating fuck up literally the most basic negotiation tactics fills me with a wild animal rage

Baby April and Raph playing <3
When I was little, and we had first gotten our dog, it was recommended that we annoy him (so that when children inevitably yanked on an ear or something he didn't go for the throat). I IMMEDIATELY volunteered for the task, and would bother him constantly (mess with his ears, poke his teeth, etc).
This ^ is something we do as a byproduct of the training. I hook a finger around one of his teeth and he'd gently shake. It reminded me of Raph and April for some reason, so I drew it! :D

Anyway SVT has a lot of really really good data journalism and visualisation. For me who is obsessed with this stuff this is so incredible I could cry. I was going to do a run down over what you can see but it's so much this post would be thousands of words long. So I'll name the categories they have, which are the war in Ukraine, the 2022 Swedish election (that features so much other general political statistics it's beautiful), the climate, covid, crime, economics, nature, scrutiny (?), the 2020 American election, the 2019 European election, the 2018 Swedish election, the labour market and so much more. It's very accessible and very fun, I love it so much, the BBC could never. Only downside is that it's only in Swedish, but I'd thought I'd recommend it anyway.
