The bees of Big Moon Botanical Sanctuary and Apiary, main campus of the Wildflower School. I am mesmerized by our bees, as is everyone who comes to visit their bedroom. They moved in 2 weeks ago. Here they do their morning dance up to the sky above and out to forage. Whenever I step into their hive space I feel a joy in my heart and pure unconditional love for these little creatures. One little one came up to my face and hovered just at eye level for a few seconds and then buzzed off, I am already turning into the crazy bee lady and talking to all of them as they dance around me. Welcome to the main campus of the Wildflower School of Botanical Medicine at Big Moon Botanical Sanctuary and Apiary. We are just 45 minutes East of Austin, TX on 8 magical acres of Oaks, Elms, Cedars and wildflowers with a separate lab, gardens, bees and chickens(and our wild critters). This house functions as the main classroom outside of the city. We also have a city classroom at a nonprofit the American Botanical Council surrounded by themed medicinal gardens. 15 years ago, I started teaching folks at coffeehouses, and in my backyard. Soon, we were visiting farms and wildland all over Central Texas. My apothecary was housed for a long time in just a room in my tiny home, later a small finished out shed. It became obvious that the school needed it's own space to stretch and grow and staying in the city meant no plants and ugly spaces. I wanted to have a place that people felt their connection to nature at. The universe laid this property at our feet and 15 years later the herbs have their very own kitchen and occupy about 1650 Sq feet with our library and classroom space. What started as a dream of mine grew into a dream with others. Now we have over 10 teachers, and year round herb school. There were no loans, no angel investors. We saved and our students believed in us. They helped us to move out of the city and we continue to do this with the same mission and goals I wrote up in 2003. Accessibility, respect, love, and bioregionalism. Our students and gardens have flourished. You can to. Never doubt where 1 little shelf of herbal potions can lead you. With hard work and dedication to the green path anything is possible. This could be your future too, and it's the same vision and empowerment we offer at our school. The world sorely needs herbalists, needs you. I send out this manifestation of my vision to you all. Texas has many secret spots. This is one of them. A hike down from the hill country savannah the Colorado River cut out a deep canyon where cold springs are dripping to form this travertine waterfall. Our final outdoor adventure with our Community Herbalism program was hiking and swimming and connecting to the hidden places. They aren't easy to get to but they are well worth the hike. Such is the path of a herbalist. If you want to find the magick, you may have to search for awhile, work hard and then all of a sudden it's there right in front of you. Thank you to all the students who worked so hard. Graduation is tomorrow. Our latest flower harvests at the Wildflower School. Properly dried herbs should look and smell alive. Make sure when u dehydrate herbs you don't burn them. We like to keep them at about 110 degrees for a few days or in Texas, you can let them dry in the car as long as the sun doesn't hit them. The result should feel crispy. Any amount of moisture in the Deep South can mean mold in the jar later. Our new Wildflower Chapter Herbalists Without Borders shirts are here! Why a shirt?? We are responding to the destruction left by Hurricane Harvey as herbalists. As many folks know, as the dust settles many mutual aid grassroots groups can be pushed out of the picture. We have a clinic in Austin at the Wildflower Unitarian church and are forming mobile responses around the gulf coast. These shirts help us to come in resembling more of a church group than wild and weedy group of herbalists. We want to blend in. We are figuring out ways to remain on the ground and an acceptable part of clean up, which in the South, churches are generally given a frew pass. Most of our members are now ordained so that our offerings can be spiritual in nature, more than looked at as medical.
