365 Day Movie Challenge (2017) - #183: My Dream Is Yours (1949) - dir. Michael Curtiz
Like Doris Day’s first film, Romance on the High Seas (1948), the follow-up My Dream Is Yours is the type of candy-colored confection that Warner Brothers adored making for their rising star. Day plays Martha Gibson, a fresh-faced clerk in a Manhattan music store who is chosen by fast-talking talent agent Doug Blake (Jack Carson) to replace his former meal ticket, egotistical singer Gary Mitchell (Lee Bowman), as the star attraction on a Los Angeles radio show.
Like Romance on the High Seas, the plot of My Dream Is Yours is secondary to the songs (including the title tune, “Cuttin’ Capers,” “I’ll String Along with You” and “Love Finds a Way”), the Technicolor cinematography (achieved here by Wilfred M. Cline and Ernest Haller) and the large supporting cast, including Adolphe Menjou, Eve Arden (in sassy best friend/secretary mode here, which was her strong suit), S.Z. Sakall, Selena Royle, Edgar Kennedy, Sheldon Leonard, Franklin Pangborn (no character actor could do “exasperated” quite like him) and John Berkes (later to memorably play the father of the man trapped in the cave in Billy Wilder’s Ace in the Hole). My Dream Is Yours is simple, lighthearted entertainment; it’s nothing groundbreaking but it is certainly watchable and enjoyable in the moment.

Konzept
