I love the way faerie speech lowkey resembles the romantic way the victorian and edwardian lot talk. shit like “You are all under the earth and sky that I do love” and “The stars will go out before I forget you” compared with “My heart beats for you. Only ever you” and “You are the first dream, the only dream I ever was unable to stop myself from dreaming” like god help me

I can't freaking wait for Better in Black and the first chapter of The Wicked Powers!! The ship list has finally been released for it.
Will and Tessa : Feeling kind of ambivalent about this. I love them, but I prefer Jessa anyway and we just got some content of them in The Last Hours so. . . . *shrugs* Can't say it's unexpected, though.
Clary and Jace: Yes!! YES YES YES!!! I mean, I was pretty sure they were going to be in this, since they're one of the main couples of TSC and the title of the book is from one of Jace's quotes, but still. I am so happy!! I hope this is from when they're being amazing badass heads of institute. Or maybe Lightwood family time?? Whatever, I don't care, I'm just glad one of my all-time OTPs is in.
Anna and Ariadne: My whole The Last Hours experience was weird, so I don't really remember much about them, but I loved them in Every Exquisite Thing and can't wait to see more!
James and Cordelia: Neutral about this one too. The whole James/Matthew/Cordelia love triangle and the way the three of them behaved in the second and third books ruined both Herondaisy and Fairstairs for me. Heronchild for the win!
Sebastian and the Seelie Queen: Weird choice, definitely not expected, but I can't wait to see what this story is about! From some Twitter screenshots I gather this is going to set at least something up for The Wicked Powers. And there is something intriguing about this couple and how they tie in to the whole theme of love in these short stories. The rest of the couples all have - mostly - healthy relationships, so this one should be different.
Emma and Julian: I adore these two and I'm always happy for more Blackstairs, but we literally just had Secrets of Blackthorn Hall?? Maybe it's a flashback from when they were kids, because I would love that. Then again, they are a main couple and all of those are here.
Thomas and Alastair : Yes!!! Hopefully Zachary is there too. Thomastair rom-com?? Sign me the hell up!
Mark, Kieran and Cristina: Faerie politics + an amazing ship. Expected since the couple or throuple thing, but still thrilled!
Simon and Isabelle: Finally some Sizzy content!! Awesome! We haven't had an Izzy POV since what, City of Heavenly Fire?? I really hope it's that. And I want to see Simon recruiting or helping with the new Academy at Luke's farm!
Luke and Jocelyn: Okay, not a fan, even if I liked the scene in City of Glass where they got together. But I do love some Circle content, and the two people who love and are loved by Valentine most during the time they realize how far off the rails he's going? Interesting. I'm hoping there'll be a flash present with an announcement that Clary's getting a sibling. (And how angsty will it be if it's a girl with red hair and blue eyes like in Clary's This World Inverted vision??) (Though I do get if Jocelyn is too traumatized to have more kids).
I was hoping so much for Gabrily and Haline, but these choices definitely do not disappoint. Three and a half of my five favourite TSC couples is definitely not a bad result. The anticipation will (hopefully maybe) get me through entrance exams hell.

Ok maybe I'm just sleep-deprived but all this build up in sobh plus kit's childhood trauma and the whole watson thing is making me think that kit's going to have a moriarty moment
Bc like moriarty is a criminal mastermind who is described by sherlock(?I think?) to be "the organiser of half that is evil and of nearly all that is undetected in this great city". Essentially he's saying that moriarty gets away with his schemes because he goes undetected. Rook taught kit from a young age to be undetected, plus jessa wants kit to lay low and not have a bunch of attention on him. Here's another quote connecting to how both kit and moriarty go unnoticed, "But so aloof is he from general suspicion, so immune from criticism, so admirable in his management and self-effacement, that for those very words that you have uttered he could hale you to a court and emerge with your year's pension as a solatium for his wounded character"
And as far as we know, ty and kit are going in twp still stuck in that fight with residing anger still inside because they never got closure. And since the fae are probably the bad guys in the series as well, if kit decides to stand with them it could cause him and ty to be on opposing sides. And then we can match the dynamic to that of sherlock and moriarty
Also, kit is very smart. He taught himself everything from old textbooks or just books in general from the age of ten, not to mention how observant he is naturally. I think cc is really setting this up to plot twist that kit isn't a watson but a moriarty
Ignore my rambling my brain just will not shut up-
Ok this is really interesting and I would personally love an enemies/opposing teams plotline for kitty. Very Faith and Buffy circa season 3 of btvs.
However, I would argue that CC'S writing is pretty formulaic. It's not necessarily a bad thing. Love a good pattern. But it means I don't see her making one of the main characters into a villian. Sure Grace is pretty morally gray but she was never really presented as one of the good guys or a part of the group like Kit. And yes you could argue that Kit's only real connection to the LA squad was Livvy and Ty and now Livvy's dead and he and Ty are on the outs. But he is shown to be connected to other "good guys" like Tessa and Jem and shown to be still close with Dru.
Also, Kit doesn't really have much connection to his faerie side. The only faerie he is even remotely close to is Kieran. Whereas he has plenty of shadowhunters and non fae he's close to. It doesn't really make sense that he would side with the fae.
Finally. CC usually has a pretty black and white morality style for her books. Yes their are morally gray characters but the main villians are usually 100% evil. Think of the cohort and how their bigotry is always presented as completely obvious and blatent, which yes it can be. But it can also be sneaky and subtle ie microaggressions. Anyways my point is I doubt she would place a beloved good guy character on the side of the villians and place him up against the other mains.
I mean I wish she would, but I don't think it's happening.

okay but like no one talks about arthur blackthorn enough ??
like this guy was tortured in faery and obviously holds no warm feelings towards them but like he doesn’t hold it against mark and helen who are kind of like reminders of his time in faery ??
(not liking faeries)
“Perhaps you are confused,” Arthur said coldly. “You might have heard of my niece and nephew; you might think that because our relatives Mark and Helen have faerie blood you will find a kinder hearing here than you would at some other Institute. But my niece was sent away because of the Cold Peace, and my nephew was stolen from us.”
Kieran’s lip curled up at the corner. “Your niece’s exile was a Shadowhunter decree, not a faerie one,” he said. “As for your nephew—”
Arthur took a shaking breath. His hands were gripping the armrests of his chair. “The hand of the Consul was forced by the betrayal of the Seelie Queen. Unseelie warriors fought beside hers. No faerie hand is free of blood. We are not well disposed toward faeries here.”
“Back when faeries were more closely tied to their demonic ancestry,” said Arthur hoarsely.
“This is the wrong family to have come to,” said Arthur. “You are asking us to break the Law for you, as if we have some special regard for the Fair Folk. But the Blackthorns have not forgotten what you have taken from them.”
(not holding it against Mark & Helen)
While I’m sure we’re all immeasurably relieved that you’ll be looking after the Blackthorn children,” said Luke, “Helen is one of them. Are you saying, by claiming responsibility for the younger siblings, that you agree that her Marks should be stripped?”
Arthur Blackthorn looked horrified. “Not at all,” he said. “My brother may not have been wise in his . . . dalliances . . . but all records show that the children of Shadowhunters are Shadowhunters. As they say, ut incepit fidelis sic permanet.”
“That’s just it,” said Balogh. “As long as we don’t negotiate his release, the problem takes care of itself. The boy is likely better off with his own kind anyway.”
Arthur Blackthorn’s round face paled. “No,” he said. “My brother wouldn’t have wanted that. He’d have wanted the boy at home with his family.” He gestured toward where Emma and Julian and the rest were sitting. “They’ve had so much taken away from them. How can we take more?”
A wave of dizziness passed through Emma along with a terrible mixture of horror and relief and amazement. Julian had stiffened, as if he’d been shocked with electricity. She saw the slight tightening of his jaw, the twitch of a muscle in his cheek. He didn’t open his mouth; it was Arthur who spoke, half-rising from his chair, his voice thready and uncertain:
“Mark?”
“There was a time when the Fair Folk might have freely returned to us one of our own,” said Arthur. “The pain of loss goes both ways, as does the loss of trust.”
“A convoy came to us from Faerie,” said Arthur. “They offered to return Mark to his family, and in exchange, we would help them discover who was killing faeries in Los Angeles.”
“And you said nothing of this to the Clave?” said Robert. “Despite knowing you were breaking the Law, the Cold Peace—”
“I wanted my nephew back,” said Arthur. “Wouldn’t you have done the same, for your family?”
“You’re a Shadowhunter,” said Robert. “If you must choose between your family and the Law, you choose the Law!”
“Lex malla, lex nulla,” said Arthur. “You know our family motto.”
“Then let me ask Arthur this, Clary,” said Robert. “What punishment would he choose for Nephilim, even young Nephilim, who break the Law?”
“Well, that would depend,” Arthur said, “on whether they were punished already, five years ago, by losing their father and brother and sister.”
“We would have protected Mark,” said Robert Lightwood. “There was no need to fear the Clave.”
Arthur was pale, his eyes dilated. Yet Emma had never heard him speak so eloquently, or with such clarity. It was bizarre. “Would you have?” he demanded. “In that case, why is Helen still at Wrangel Island?”
“She’s safer there,” snapped Robert. “There are those—not myself—who still hate the faeries for the betrayal of the Dark War. How do you think they would treat her if she were among other Shadowhunters?”
“So you couldn’t have protected Mark,” said Arthur. “You admit it.”
not to mention that he’s more than willing to take Emma in to?? like okay we know that his mental state leads him to be unable to take care of any of them really but like still
“Absolutely not,” Julian said. “Emma lives in L.A.; it’s her home. She can stay at the Institute. That’s what Shadowhunters do. The Institute is supposed to be a refuge.”
“Your uncle will be running the Institute,” said Jia. “It’s up to him.”
“What did he say?” Julian demanded, and behind those four words were a wealth of feeling. When Julian loved people, he loved them forever; when he hated them, he hated them forever. Emma had the feeling the question of whether he was going to hate his uncle forever hung in the balance at exactly this moment.
“He said he would take her in,” Jia said. “But really, I think there’s a place for Emma at the Shadowhunter Academy here in Idris. She’s exceptionally talented, she’d be surrounded by the best instructors, there are many other students there who’ve suffered losses and could help her with her grief—”
“Yes, yes, I understand,” said Jia. “Very well. Your uncle doesn’t mind, Julian, if Emma lives in the Institute, and the institution of parabatai trumps all other considerations.”
Helen was nearly finished packing the belongings that she had brought with her to Idris. Uncle Arthur (he had told Emma to call him that too) had promised to send on the rest.
the quotes are from city of heavenly fire and lady midnight. i don’t think i even went into lord of shadows (where arthur, you know, willingly died to keep his family safe) and i made this post before queen of air and darkness came out.
like of course he shouldn’t hold anything against helen and mark but like honestly while it would have been wrong to it would also have been idk understandable if he had? like he went through a super traumatic experience in faery and helen and mark are linked to both faery in general and !! to a specific faery who was complicit in his traumatic torture. but he doesn’t hold it against helen and mark, considers them family, and loves them and like while that’s the right thing to do i also really appreciate him for that ?? like idk i just feel like arthur deserves more appreciation

I just think it shows so much about her character. She sees that her family will be hurt if she doesn’t do something, so she steps in and keeps that from happening, regardless of the damage to her.OTP: JemmaBrOTP: RosastairsOT3: JulianXEmmaXCristina; i want to ship Rosastairs but I can’t not ship Jemma I’m just a sucker for angsty relationshipsnOTP: MarkXEmma we’ve all seen that that could never work outBest quote: "There was no reason to sail down Sexy Thoughts River to the Sea of Perversion when it wasn't going to go anywhere." It just shows the sacrifices he will make to help his family, despite how hard it is for him.OTP: Marktina (explained in the last ask)BrOTP: MarkXTy i just love the way they understand each other OT3: KIERARKTINA BITCHES FUCK YEAH IM SO READY FOR MY FIRST CANON FUCKING OT3nOTP: again EmmaXMarkBest quote: my god there are just so many of them but for a change we’ll go with a serious one: “There was beauty in the idea of freedom, but it was an illusion. Every human heart was chained by love.”Headcanon: When Mark *finally* realizes what’s going on between Kieran and Cristina, he totally supports it and plays matchmaker until the three of them are one glorious OT3.CristinaDo i like them: Yes what a fucking queen5 good qualities: deeply compassionate, knows herself well, protects her heart when necessary, a good listener, will also talk sense into a friend (Emma) when needed3 bad qualities: Sometimes protecting her heart goes a bit far and she seems a bit scared to take risks, and that’s all I’ve got I love Cristina Rosales and can’t think of a bad thing about her honestlyFavorite moment: When she tells Mark she doesn’t want a body without a heart. I think it just showcases perfectly the way she sets her boundaries and expects others to respect them. Topics I just need to touch on from Lord of Shadows (MAJOR SPOILER ALERT)
Emma and Julian
- I’m really glad their friendship went back to normal after some time. The distance between them was unlike them at all and I hated it. I know it was necessary because they both had to process how things had changed between them, but that doesn’t mean I liked reading it.
- Okay so I think the curse is seriously coming into play here. Cassie never outwardly says that the curse is already occurring, but she drops multiple hints throughout the book. For one, all of a sudden, Emma and Julian can communicate telepathically. I don’t know but I’m pretty sure that’s not supposed to happen. Also, um, they caught a STONE building on fire?! Stone? All-powerful runes? Ring a bell?????
- During the church scene and many, many other scenes, there’s so much sexual tension between Emma and Julian. Literally. I think there’s more in LOS than LM because at this point they’ve had sex and seen that intimate side of each other. At this point, they both have privately acknowledged that they are in love with the other. I think that plays a huge role in their relationship and how it has evolved since Lady Midnight.
- That huge fight that they had when they were staying at Malcolm’s cottage literally broke me. I was on the verge of crying while reading that. I’m just glad that it didn’t take long for them to make up.
- Their conversation about the Shadowhunter family mottos BAHAHAHAHA
- This is their second sex scene and honestly I loved it so much. It was so perfect. I almost burst into tears crying when Emma admitted to Julian that she’d been lying about her relationship with Mark.
- Emma still hasn’t told Julian that she loves him and I keep wondering if this is an important detail that will be used in QoAaD. Am I the only one who noticed this?
Diana Wrayburn
- It’s not like I hated Diana in Lady Midnight, I just didn’t know her very well and didn’t see the depth of her character. Once I read her backstory, I grew to love her. She is such a strong person and honestly I just want to be her best friend.
- Diana and Gwyn? Um, can you say hella cute couple?
- Once Cassie told us that there would be a transgender character reveal in Lord of Shadows, I knew from the start that it would be Diana. In Lady Midnight, it talks about how she has lots of secrets and a dark past. We knew that she’d been through a lot, so it wasn’t a huge surprise for me, but still a monumental moment in the book nonetheless.
- Summed up into four words, I can say “I love Diana Wrayburn!”
Kit Herondale
- From the moment we found out in Lady Midnight that Kit is the Lost Herondale, I knew that he would be an interesting character to read about. I was not disappointed.
- It’s truly heartwarming to watch Kit grow from a person who is denying himself as a Shadowhunter and the culture of the Shadowhunters to fully embracing it and finding a home with the Blackthorns. That scene where they’re fighting the Seven Riders and Ethna (or whatever her name is) is about to kill him and he’s all like “I’m Christopher Herondale.” I just loved that and I almost cried.
- At this point, I still don’t really know where his relationship with Ty will lead. I know for sure it will be either a romantic relationship or a parabatai relationship, and I’m perfectly fine with whichever. For me, it’s hard to tell right now. Cassie has a habit of pulling large plot twists on us, and I don’t know what to think. All I do know is that I like Kit and Ty as friend or lovers. I think they compliment each other very well and are so cute. (The Sherlock and Watson comparisons?! Cute af!)
Julian Blackthorn
- I’m honestly so scared for Julian and I have two main theories for him. Neither of them are happy. He’s either going to literally go off the deep end and go full evil and be really bad or he’s not going to survive to the end of the series. Like I said, I don’t really like either option.
- Julian’s hidden ruthlessness is touched upon several times in LOS like in LM. This is NOT coincidental and Cassie is foreshadowing. His ruthless nature and his undying will to protect those he loves will play a major role in the plot of QoAaD, I’m sure.
- I don’t even want to think about how Livvy’s death will affect his family, but especially Julian. He’d devoted his life, time, and heart to protecting his family and doing whatever it takes to keep them alive and safe. He’s failed to do that. Because of Livvy’s death, he will blame himself and I feel like it will really push him over the edge.
- There is this undeniable dark Julian that we all know exists. Few of us actually acknowledge that this is a part of Julian because we don’t want to imagine our baby Julian like that. Our baby Julian, who has been in love with Emma for god knows how long. Our baby Julian who ran an Institute when he was twelve, killed his own father, who became parabatai with Emma even when he knew he was in love with her because he didn’t want to lose her. Jules, Julian, who paints her in secret, who hides his feelings for her. He is an incredibly selfless person and I feel like that it could seriously be his downfall and weakness ironically.
- Basically, I think that tough times are in the forecast for Julian Blackthorn. :(
Five Main Character Deaths
- Jon Cartwright: I was really surprised about his death and didn’t see it coming. I was just a lil sad but overall it wasn’t that bad. I will miss him though. I hope Marisol will be okay.
- Arthur Blackthorn: I was also very surprised about this death. In Lady Midnight, Arthur is written as this insane, depressed, and sad individual. We don’t like him because he was supposed to run the Institute, not Julian. In the last few pages of his life, he was completely lucid and actively gave up his life to save the younger Blackthorns. I was very taken aback and thought it was very honorable. It instantly redeemed his character for me. I was sad to see him go.
- Malcolm Fade: I never really believed he was dead tbh. I actually laughed when he truly died. Literally, this dude spends 200+ years dedicating his life to bringing a girl back from the dead, and when he does she just kills him?!?! I died it was actually really funny. I realize how sick that sounds and I’m sorry but it was so funny.
- Robert Lightwood: Never did I think a character from another series would be killed off. I set myself up for sadness when I assumed that. I was very sad when Robert died; not only was he Emma and Julian’s only hope to fix things between them, but he was also just mending his relationship with his children and it broke my heart when Alec was calling for his dad. I can’t remember exactly, the last few pages of LOS were a blur of tears and emotions and words and I’m pretty sure I started crying when Alec was calling “Dad, please, dad.”
- Livvy Blackthorn: Oh my god. Oh my god. Livvy’s death caught me by complete surprise and it crushed me. Livvy had so much ahead of her. She’d found out that Julian had been the one that had taken care of all of the younger Blackthorns since the Dark War, and she’d wanted to be like him. She’d kissed Julian on the forehead. It was so cute and it warmed my heart. SHE NEVER GOT TO RUN AN INSTITUTE. All Livvy wanted was for her family to be together and when Helen and Mark finally came back and everyone was together, she died. She never got to see her family reunite, and I think that’s the saddest part. I truly will miss Livvy. And when the clock rang? Oh my god, I was a hot mess. There are dried tears on the last two pages of LOS. I cried myself to sleep that night when I finished it.
Side note on Livvy’s death: maybe this is a grieving me just searching for a way to bring Livvy back but there was a quote in either Lady Midnight or Lord of Shadows (I think its LOS) and one of the characters (I think a faerie or something) is like “Oh, how foolish of u to regard death as something so final.” Will this tie into Livvy’s death? WILL LIVVY COME BACK?
Characters I Literally Cannot Deal With
- Jaime Rosales (taking advantage of Dru like wtf)
- Annabel Blackthorn (she fucking killed Livvy and Robert ugh)
- Zara Dearborn (I don’t really need to explain this, do I?)
- The Cohort (see above)
Characters I Didn’t Pay Much Attention to Before but Now I Like Them
- Mark Blackthorn (sweet bby oml)
- Kieran (ur not as bad as I thought, pal)
- Diana Wrayburn (I explained above. Never hated her or anything, just didn’t know her)
- Gwyn ap Nudd (PROTECT THIS ACTUAL TEDDY BEAR OML)
- Dru Blackthorn (don’t make her babysit plz)
- Ty and Livvy (I have a twin and I wish he was like Ty lol)
Emma Carstairs
- hot mess of angst and emotions throughout the book (as expected)
- Julian Blackthorn Julian Blackthorn Julian Blackthorn Julian Blackthorn
- She slayed one of the Seven Riders like holy crap girl ur a legend
- She and Julian had sex again. Have I talked about this? Yes. It was amazing. I loved it. I enjoyed every second of it.
- I love how whenever someone does anything mean or says something bad about the Blackthorns, Emma freaking goes apeshit on them
- When Emma made Diego stand in the antpile.... OH MY GOD I LOVE THIS GIRL
