This is something a bit different from me, but in light of the recent announcement from Ubisoft that there’s going to be a remake of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time coming out in January 2021, I thought I’d share some thoughts.

(This started out small but got outta hand so super long post incoming, no spoilers for the games)

So first off, a bit of my history with the original game.

I’m a big fan of the Prince of Persia (PoP) franchise, and I’ll fully admit that nostalgia plays a big part in it. You see, in many ways this 2003 classic was my real entryway drug into the world of videogames.

It wasn’t the first videogame I had ever played. My friends had consoles, there were some games on the school computers, but I didn’t own games as a kid. As far as my parents were concerned, these were all the spoils and soul damning devices of Lucifer himself. You know how it is, every generation goes through this thing of blaming all the world’s problems on a new artform: rock and roll, comic books and then videogames.

So yeah, a gaming console or buying games for the home computer was a BIG NO-NO!

But of course, the more an authority figure says you can’t have something, the more you want and crave it. It was only a matter of time until the opportunity presented itself to me.

And then the day finally came.

It was just me and a couple of friends, going to this new magazine store near the school. And there it was: the dvd case that came with a gaming mag for like 5 euros if I remember correctly, stupid cheap for such a great game.

There was doubt, there was fear, there was anxiety. I didn’t know much about the game, only the old 1989 DOS Prince of Persia:

This had the same name but looked different. I was seduced immediately.

The case stared longingly at me:

It’s not my fault, I was bewitched and I bought it.

My symbol of rebellion, my first big transgression, and my first real treasured posession that I bought with hard earned money.

I furiously installed the game as soon as my parents left the house. Played it for a couple of hours and stood in awe at the thing - the cinematics, the cool parkour moves, the arabian nights setting, the time manipulation to undo mistakes when platforming or in combat, the Prince breaking the fourth wall saying:”no no no, that’s not what happened, let me start over” whenever I died and got a game over…

You have not experienced true fear if at some point in your life you didn’t feel the cold sweat running down your back as you hear the very distinct sound of your parents’ car arriving when you’re doing something “prohibited”.

As soon as I heard that sound, I quickly quit the game, uninstaled it (I could not run the risk of them finding out I had tainted their machine with a videogame *gasp!*), and ran to my room to hide the game before opening the door for them.

Neetheless to say, I never made much progress since I had to start over every time after quitting and uninstalling the thing. I would just play those first couple of hours over and over, never knowing how the story progressed, but I was happy all the same. At one point I knew every line of dialogue, every music cue, every sound effect of that beginning part. It would be some years before I got my first laptop and finally managed to complete it.

All of this to say that the game means a lot to me. Not just as a product or piece of entertainment. This wasn’t casually playing on someone’s gameboy advance or PS2 to have a bit of fun and pass the time.

This was more intimate.

It was just me; the game; a dark room and a blanket; and a sincere and charming, simple but compelling story told seamlessly through mechanics that only enhanced it. This was me witnessing gameplay and storytelling going hand in hand in a way that even many of my other favourite games don’t do, or don’t do as well (there’s usually some disconnect where a game only manages to really excel at one but not the other).

As a big fan you might think I was super hyped for this.

But I gotta say…no, not really.

I’m not super angry, but I’m not really excited either honestly. And I don’t think it’s just the rough and uncanny character models and animation that people are pointing out all over (although that doesn’t help).

I guess to talk a bit on that, I should stress out that my problem isn’t that it doesn’t look realistic enough. To be honest, and this is going to sound rich from a big Witcher 3 fan, I think that the gaming industry overall, moreso big tripple A titles, seem to have this unhealthy obsession with photorealism. Like, I don’t need to see the characters’s pores to care about these polygon people. Strong art direction is what I feel is more valuable. I just don’t think this arms race to photorealism is sustainable. Games are taking longer to make and fund, and I’d rather have dev teams spend more time polishing and refining the games’ mechanics and/or story if the trade-off is less “realistic” graphics.

It might just be personal preference, but I wish we were getting more stylized character and world design. Go look at some screenshots for Pathologic 2, a game that came out last year that hits that sweet spot between full-blown cartoony/caricature and realistic by today’s standards:

And I think that is somewhat what they were going for with this remake’s character models (or I hope it was). But it’s still not quite there, hopefully they’ll work on improving those so they can hit that sweet spot also.

(in defense of my hipocrisy and love of The Witcher 3, I think the more realistic look was appropriate for the world they were portraying, it benefits from it. However I don’t think I would love it any less if it had less detailed models and environments)

One last thing on the graphics.

I will say this though, at least from the footage we see in the new trailer the team seems to be capitalizing on colour. Big vibrant reds, blues, whites and yellows in the environment look great, and really captures the 1.001 nights/arabian nights feel that I absolutely love. I appreciate that since there’s always this tendency for remakes to suck all the colour and life from the original (in both games and movies), regardless if it fits the setting and tone or not.

Anyway, I think the reason I’m very much without a big reaction is that I believe the 2003 original is a true classic, a masterpiece even - I guess I should stress out that when I say masterpiece, I don’t mean it’s perfect. Just that the whole is bigger and better than the sum of its parts, that the things it does right, it does so right, that it completely overshadows the flaws.

The story, the art direction, the gameplay (the holy trinity of platforming, combat and puzzle solving), the brilliant introduction of the dagger of time as a gameplay and story mechanic (one of my favourite mechanics in all of gaming), the music, the charming duo that is the Prince and Farah, the tight pacing with the game being just the right length and not overstaying its welcome, the outstanding level design where you’re never stuck doing one thing for too long (the game is always juggling between combat, story, platforming and puzzles, mixing and matching)…

Looking at all these things, I just really don’t think we need a remake because I don’t think there’s that many glaring terrible flaws that could justify it.

Adding more scenes and content could be good, or it might backfire: bloat and ruin the game’s already excelent pacing and fluidity (which I think is the main keyword that better describes the original, everything flows superbly). The original was only 6-8 hours long and it is better for it. I’m not confident that adding dozens of hours of gameplay like the big tittles today would help at all.

The only real improvements I can see are:

tweeking and perfecting the combat (I’ve seen it mentioned that they’re implementing a targeting system which sounds good);

perhaps also better Farah’s A.I during combat when you have to help protect her from swarms of enemies;

Maybe throw in a couple more enemy types? The cut sand tigers for example?

usual things like adding the option of subtitles, add the ability to skip cutescenes;

But other than that…

I don’t even think the graphics of the original look bad. They’ve aged of course, with the game being 17 years old, but still. I installed it last night and played through the first hour to take some screenshots and I think they’re still good:

I can understand the MediEvil remaster, the Spyro remaster or the more recent FFVII remake in terms of wanting to update the graphics. I can understand that not everyone can easily go back to these low poly lads:

But this game? I know I’m influenced by nostalgia and all, but I don’t think it needs that makeover that badly, especially when compared to these other remakes and remasters. Funnily enough, I just noticed that these examples I just listed were all PS1 games. PoP: SoT was a PS2 , PC and Xbox game. PS2 era games have aged far better visually and don’t need that big a makeover in my most humble opinion.

It would be one thing if the original was out of print like a Rule of Rose scenario ,where you can’t find the game unless you go to ebay or something and it’s stupid expensive. Or if it was a pain to get running on modern systems like it was with Grim Fandango, until it got a remaster.

But no, you can find the Sands of Time trilogy and the PoP (2008) reboot on GOG and Steam (on Steam only there’s also the PoP:The Forgotten Sands midquel). So there isn’t the usual problem of the game no longer being accessible to people who want to play it, which helps justify the need for a remake.

The original still plays nice, sounds nice and looks nice, so I guess this all goes to show that at the end of the day, this remake just feels a bit unnecessary to me, at least from what little the trailer showed (I would love to have my bitter cynical ass proved wrong though!).

Maybe I just have a superhuman tolerance for older games and how they look, I really don’t have that big a problem if the game itself is good or interesting, so I don’t always think older games need remakes.

Maybe my falling out of love with Ubisoft in this last decade has curbed forever any hype I might have for their announcements, even when they pull out my son, my baby boy Prince of Persia out again.

Maybe I’m just burnt out and too pessimistic about remakes, remasters and adaptations (although game remakes usually do better than film ones).

And this makes me a bit sad because I don’t want to sh*t all over the first piece of “new” Prince of Persia content we’ve had since 2010??? Oof, it’s been a while.

Especially knowing that Yuri Lowenthal is coming back and excited to voice the Prince again. And I also don’t want to be too harsh since we’re looking at an alpha of the game. But so far I’m just very numb to this, I do seriously hope it turns out good and that they don’t rush it out the door. But I’m not convinced we need a remake in the first place. The original is a milestone, a game changer. I’d rather see a game that had great ideas and poor execution being remade than something people already love and consider a masterpiece.

Guess we’ll see how I feel once more news and footage come out.

small edit: I can’t believe I was just watching this Sands of Time playthrough on youtube and at one point it is said: “Another game that is designed similarly to this is Soul Reaver actually.”

Of course! I didn’t even see it! All of my favourite things are connected!!! Maybe that detail was another thing that helped me getting really into Soul Reaver as I was first playing it.

1. Bandhani:

The pattern of putting 2-3 beads together dictates motifs and patterns This art originates from the districts of Saurashtra, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Amreli & Junagadh and is also practiced in Ahmedabad. Ancestral craftsmen from the Panchmahala and Vadodara regions likewise make customary bead adornments and trimmings while working around strong articles, for example, coconuts and pot-rests it takes a shocking three-dimensional structure. Bead art is used to render home furnishings 3. Patola: Patola is a woven saree made from the tinting technique of double ikat. Such handmade sarees are highly costly and used to be worn by royal families. The artwork by Patola is native to Patan, Gujarat. For the production of a saree, it takes about six months to one year. The dyeing process is the reason behind its demand, which takes a long time. The saree has become renowned in Indonesia for its fine intricacy and marvelous coloring, for local weaving being a tradition there. There are only three families in Patan making this handicraft rich and popular. It is said that only sons within the family are taught the technique of this handwork. There are essentially four patterns of Patola saree and all are produced by Salvi community in Gujarat.

4. WoodWork:

Woodwork is a common Gujarat hands-on skill. Gujarat people love to use wooden objects to decorate their houses, rooms, and other locations. Woodwork provides for these spaces with a typical richness theme. Bhavnagar District is the center of Gujarati woodworking. Woodworking art is a classic mix of opulence and elegance. Most notable, Surat woodcraft "sandli" (sandalwood), Gujarat has its place in people's hearts. Carpeting delicate "sandli" articles with state of the art designs require years of experience. The template includes picture frames, porch wing, bridal box, jewelry box, spoon serving, and furniture. Gujarat handcrafted wood stuff is loved nationally and globally. 5. Zari:

Zari is a decorative feature of textiles, using a thread to do the embroidery. In Indian bridal dresses, Zari research plays a significant part. Surat a city in Gujarat is famous for its threads work. They use these shimmery threads to create delicate and elegant designs. The string comes in three hues like golden, silver, and copper, all of which when utilized in the weaving procedure look rich. Zari's fashion started in the Mughal era according to historians. It has also been the Mughal dressmakers' favorite fabric to create royal outfits. 'Salam’ 'Katori’ 'Tiki’ 'Chalak’ and 'Kangari' are the most well-known Zari embroideries. The clay craft techniques are influenced by common patterns and designs on the embroidery. It takes three to five days for the craft to dry off until it’s completed. The workmanship plans are typically observed in customary structures including a peacock, horse, mango tree, blossoms, ladies, ladies, and substantially more. The art makes enhancing and conventional things, for example, bowls, pots, handis, lights, divider casings, and figures. 7. Leather Handicraft:

Gujarat’s Leather Handcraft is a striking quality in India. The leathercraft originates in Kutch regions. The leather products are primarily manufactured by the Meghwal community in Gujarat. Bhujodi village is renowned for its handicrafts in leather.

This magnificent art, dating back in time, continues to flourish during the modern era with its strong effects. The leathercraft is mainly used for the production of saddles, armors, helmets, and swords, depending on the time of demand. In contemporary times, exquisite leather objects include boots, shoes, covers for cushions, and artifacts. One can see the handmade leather pieces in beautiful colors and embroideries. The master of this craft Narsi Bhai Bijlani moved from Pakistan to Gujarat after partition. 8. Hand block printing:

Hand-block printing is a Gujarati traditional technique. Gujarat the oldest and largest center known for Hand block printing. Each Block design has a conventional approach. This craftsmanship from Gujarati corporates covers for satchels, grips, frill, divider pieces, place settings, boots, nd cushions. Also the embroidery is famous for the execution of architectural designs, known as "Kheer Bharat" The stitches got this name from floss-silk, which in India is called "Kheer". 10. Tangaliya work:

Tangaliya Job or Daana is skilled in weaving shawls and making textiles for wearing the outfit. Dangassia is Gujarat’s native culture, who began the craft 700 years ago. Gujarat District Surendranagar is the birthplace of Tangaliya Work. Tangaliya shawls are one of Gujarat's most renowned crafts. The perplexing additional turning technique to make geometric designs makes it exceptional. The soul of Tangaliya Work is vibrant dots, which are simultaneously rendered on both ends of a shawl. Using various colored fabrics, the handwoven technique is used to make cloth or shawl. The content from "Tangalia" contains items from home decor and ladies’ clothes. This art speaks volumes about its quality worldwide. 11. Rogan Painting:

Rogan Painting, or "Rogan Printing" captures spiritual India's true spirit. Kutch regions Khatri group is famous for this craft. Also though it comes from Persia, in India Gujarat leads the way for Rogan Painting. Niruna village is the mainspring of a Rogan handcraft in the Bhuj district. This is a painting produced using silk that utilizes a unique brush to get the excellence right. The paintings, therefore, take on a degree of excellence to offer such brilliant work. The paint is made from vegetables or flowers with castor oil and natural colors. It takes a few days for the paint to make the crafts turn into a paste.

12. Rabari Embroidery:

Rabari Embroidery has deep origins in Gujarat's Kutch areas. This art was initiated by women of the Rabri community and named after their culture. When tribal women loved to be colorful they made their Rabari Embroidery garments. The most famous styles of Rabri Embroidery are the Dhebar and Kachchi. Rabari Embroidery has developed around for decades, because of its distinctive designs, evolving as a modern craft. Throughout every piece, the embroidery has elements with striking colors, small mirrors, and artistic features. Quick in every part of the world, this handwork has its place. 13. Patchwork & Applique:

Patchwork and Applique are methods for the repair of a torn piece of fabric. The district of Banaskantha Gujarat is renowned for that art. Kutch is the root of Patchwork and Appliqué Art. The art of producing and arranging embroidered pieces on cloth may sound simple but creating each piece requires an artistic meaning. Patchwork and Applique are important elements of dark-colored fabrics, beads, mirrors, and other adornments. The most in-demand pieces of this craft are door and wall hangings. A groundbreaking aspect about this artwork above all is that once the patches are mounted on the fabric they do not appear to hack or wrinkle. 14. Carpets (Dhurries): Dhurries, floor coverings, covers, and mats are as yet being woven at straightforward pit looms in the towns of Kutch. The craftsmen weave the patterns with their fingertips and work on the pedal-operated machines. Their exquisite patterns, contrasting paint schemes, and intricate weaving make these carpets popular. The durries are made of fleece, goat hair, and cotton. Subsequently, handloom weaving is a significant control of the town, situated on thruway Ahmedabad-Bhavnagar.

Rogan Jones ⚜ Psychic ⚜ 36 ⚜ Locus Sigilli ⚜ ENTJ

In the midst of chaos...

Son of Fallon Jones—retired J&J detective, Rogan grew up under his father’s shadow. Many who knew his old man claimed that Rogan is Fallon’s carbon copy; in appearance, in character, and virtually all other habits that pass down from father to son either by DNA or exemplary behavior. But that was about as far as the apples fell from the tree. Unlike his predecessor, Rogan was not a conspiracy theorist nor did he have any taste for mysteries. Being born to parents whose very business was the art of sleuthing, Rogan had come to dread them miserably. Having spent an entire childhood having to listen to elaborate and often ridiculous conspiracies that ruined perfectly good conversations at the dinner table, Rogan went out of his way to eliminate both conspiracies and mysteries in his adult life.

Given the fact that there was a lot that he did not see eye to eye on, with his father—his choice of career had been yet another sore topic. Fallon had been extremely disappointed in his son when Rogan had refused to follow in his footsteps. He lacked any interest for paranormal criminal investigations and instead wanted to have an education that would lead to a practical life. One preferably that didn’t involve crime or danger. And a business degree seemed to promise him exactly that—a chance at pursuing a career that offered stability and logic. A line of career that also rather complimented his talent.

While his detective father, had a supernatural gift for pinpointing patterns and trends that made him so successful in his line of work as a detective, Rogan dabbled with a paranormal capacity of a very different kind. It had left his parents scratching their heads in wonder of which lineage of genes in the Jones family had passed down to him of all people the innate ability to wield binding contracts. And not just any contracts. Deals that were bound by paranormal energy and were physically impossible to break. Those that did…well they ended up getting a taste of what it was like to make a deal with the devil. To Rogan’s chagrin though, these contractual elements came into play virtually any time he became involved in an exchanged-based arrangement. His childhood is marked by many such odd occasions where losing even the seemingly harmless of bets turned deadly. Rogan wasn’t quite sure how it worked, but in every situation wherein he gave his word or someone else gave him theirs, the vow is somehow magically sealed. And it took a hell of a lot of trial and error on his part to get the hang of it.

It was around this time in university that he also met Evelyn Ross. A vibrant young woman who attended the same university though as an art student. It was hard to ever find Evelyn without her hands stained with paint or muddied with clay. Despite the fact that they were both pursuing different fields, Rogan found himself intrinsically drawn to her. He supposed it was the fact she lacked any psychical talents that he had found so refreshing. Evelyn was a safe bet—a source of comfort. Luckily, that attraction hadn’t been one sided and so by the time he’d finished his masters, Rogan had proposed to Evelyn after being with her for almost three and a half years.

...there is also opportunity.

To his chagrin however, there was no avoiding mystery and chaos once he took on the seat as head of the Arcane Society after his uncle Zack Jones. A position that was very much thrust upon him by force since his cousin Dixon refused to step up to the plate to succeed his father. There was also the fact that Rogan’s past experience in managerial roles had granted him leadership skills that people believed were important for steering the Arcane Society in a new progressive direction.

The Arcane Society is an organization fraught with disorder and hence Rogan finds his hands full as he tries to tackle the endless list of tasks his uncle Zack left under his succession plan. Revamping the Arcane Museum and hunting down lost artifacts was a difficult task all on its own. But with new plans to establish headquarters in New Orleans, a city crawling with supernatural threats of virtually every kind—from vampires to werewolves, witches and everything in between he was determined to give voice to the human faction. And it is only when he has the entire responsibility of the organization lourded over his head that Rogan finds his moral compass on business ethics being challenged. There are times when he succumbs to underhanded methods to achieve his means. Yet that is not something that sits too heavily on his conscious. In a dog eat dog city like NOLA, one had to be willing to bite if they wished to avoid getting bitten.

Web of Connections:

Marcel Gerard: One couldn’t just establish a secret society in the crescent city without holding diplomatic relations with the King of the quarter. With Marcel he’d made his very first deal in New Orleans—on the simple premise that the Arcane Society would interfere minimally with his dealings. That is, of course if his night-walkers kept themselves in check enough to ensure that the human faction was dealt with fairly. But as always Rogan has a few plans of his own stocked in his back pocket. When the lost relics are once again restored to the Arcane Society, the fangs in this town are going to have to re-evaluate the links on the supernatural food chain.

Kira Yukimura: As a man on a mission, Rogan wasn’t the type to leave any stone un-turned. Reinstating the Arcane Museum to it’s former glory meant acquiring the right resources. Noshiko Yukimura, a woman well endowed with a keen eye for antiques was someone he imagined would be a great asset as a consultant to help him curate supernatural artifacts. In the process, she’d graciously volunteered her daughter Kira to help out at the museum. While he left most of the work pertaining to museum to those he’d employed to manage its upkeep, the few times he’d paid it a visit he’d noticed the young girl emanate a curiosity about existing pieces of artifacts that garnered concern from him. Teenager or not, the girl ought to know that there was some truth to old adage that curiosity killed the cat.

Jenna Sommers: This humble little history teacher had tickled his curiosity when he'd discovered the uncanny resemblance she bore to Alaric's ex-partner. But now that she was living in his great aunt Trula Tallentyre's charming victorian house, she'd truely captured his attention. And not entirely for the right reasons. That property, like many of the others under his family's estate, should've been secured under the Jones' name. The game is wonderfully brought to life with an excellent 3D engine, and the app plays smoothly on iPads (which might explain why it's only available for iPads!). Some might find the reliance on dice-rolls to get anything done frustrating at times, but it does feed into the sense of theatre created by the tension and dread as you pray that nothing else goes wrong on the ship as it is hastily patched back together. Imagine Apollo 13 except Tom Hanks ends up eating Bill Paxton - great stuff.

Feud (Review)

In many ways Chess is the quintessential turn-based strategy game, and a classic that many people try and iterate on over the years. Some we've been fans of, others not so much, but Feud has impressed us the most so far. This free-to-play gem, instead of trying to be too clever or add in extra rules, instead trys to condense the Chess experience into a tied, closed-quarters tactical brawl.

A 4x4 board, with sixteen pieces (eight each side), leaves no room for manoeuvre, so planning your attacks, moves and exploitations is paramount. Matt was very impressed by this bite-sized take on the classic formula, and there's even cross-platform multiplayer (async) as well as pass-and-play. The only thing it's really missing is a ranked mode and some QoL touches - make sure you check it out!

Egypt: Old Kingdom (Review)

Publisher: Clarus Victoria Platforms: iOS Universal, Android Price: $4.99

Clarus Victoria are back with a second entry in their turn-based strategy series based on different historical periods of Egypt. The first game focused on the prehistoric history of the area, while their new game focuses on the 'Old Kingdom' period, which last around 400 years ending around 2100 BC. Back then, the capital of the nation was Mephis and it is here that the player must work to try and build great periods and develop their civilisation.

Resource management is key, and then you must also try and assimilate the other Egyptian tribes through either diplomacy or warfare. It's a niche-style strategy game on a very niche topic, but a breath of fresh air and an excellent pick for those looking for something a little bit different.

In hindsight, our original score of 5/5 was perhaps a bit ambitious. While an excellent turn-based strategy game, much of Ticket to Earth's appeal and potential lay on the assumption that Robot Circus would finish the final three chapters of the game. One could argue they're taking their time, but 20 months on and players have finally gotten Episode 3, and the promise TtE made to players all those years ago is almost complete.

With a unique take on turn-based tactics, a genuinely engaging story and plenty of challenge to boot, now that Ticket it Earth is 75% complete it definitely deserves your attention, and can be considered one of 2017's silent stunners. It shot itself in the foot, for sure, but time has proved early adopters right in the end.

Farabel (Review)

Publisher: Frogames Platforms: iOS Universal, Android Price: $8.99

Given that there are so many ways you can design a turn-based tactics game, for something to come along with a genuinely interesting and clever twist is rare, and speaks to the highest levesl of creativity. Farabel's trick, such as it is, is to start you at the end. You being the story at the height of your power, having just emerged victorious from a long and bloody struggle with the Orcs. But to learn the tale, you have to go backwards in time.

With each level you complete, your forces actually get weaker as you make your way back to the beginning of the war. Within individual turn-based battles there's also some timey-wimey shenanigans your hero character can exploit, making for some devilishly flexible tactical solutions. There are thirteen scenarios in all as part of the main story, and beyond that you can participate in daily challenges, or build an army from scratch to take part in special modes, like survival. All round, it's excellent value for money, even being at the steeper end of the scale.

Euclidean Skies (Review)

Publisher: Miro Straka Platforms: iOS Universal Price: $4.99

This game would also fit right in on our Puzzles guide, but there's a healthy enough dose of turn-based tactical thinking that earns it a place on this list (that, and the five-star review it got). It's a significantly different game to its predecessor, and while it doesn't always work the raw ambition this game shows makes it all the more compelling. Even the art style is different - more vibrant and aggressive, it brings the world to life in a way that's unexpected, but also fantastic.

This is a must buy for fans of puzzle tactics games, and while some of the charm is lost in the shift away form Euclidean Land's simplicity, there's plenty of character in this boisterous new chapter.

Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind (Review)

Some strategy gamers will find Six Ages' blend of (sort of) forced immersion awful, where others will lap it up. Fans of King of Dragon Pass - which this serves as a spiritual sequel to - will already be familiar with it. They'll discover a smoother interface and a new setting in a new culture. Forgoing the traditional control and power fantasies of strategic empire-building is a hard habit to give up. But for those that can make the sacrifice, Six Ages holds a wealth of wonders few other games can match. It wants to tell you a tale of gods and humans, of mysteries and the mundane while still taxing your tactics. It's a bold goal and, while it doesn't always work, the narratives that it weaves are unlike anything else in gaming.

The game’s blocky, loose artstyle and easy interface make it an easy game to learn and hard to put down. Imbroglio sounds like a mess; it is in the name. But of all Michael Brough’s excellent, sparse designs, this one has the most player-driven customization and controlled random inputs. Here is ample proof that roguelikes can offer as much strategic challenge as the best of classics. Each character has their own ability and weakness, and the 4x4 grid on which the game unfolds is filled with tiles doubling as weapons. Swiping towards an enemy will activate that tile and fire its ability, with every slain enemy adding experience to the weapon responsible.

The goal of the game is to collect treasure, which upon collection heals the character and causes the walls of the grid to change configuration. Enemies spawn quicker and quicker as the turn count increases, so the whole affair is a race against time to level-up the sixteen tiles while staying healthy and collecting treasure at a steady pace. It is accessible but with a glut of weapons and characters to unlock and the final challenge to beat, it will reward sustained interest and focused strategic approaches.
