Princess Agents (or not exactly TLOS v.1)
Oh. My. Goodness. This is not TLOS, despite the main leads being played by the same actors. This is probably the only common denominator between the two dramas.
Anyway, I think it’s a good thing that I’m only watching this drama now because I know there’s “The Legend of Shen Li” to fall back on for any PTSD (that’s “post-traumatic stress from drama” for me) I may suffer because of it.
Again, I say that though the leads here are portrayed by the same actors as TLOS, their characters, personalities and values could not be any more different. Hence, there is no character whiplash for me or any overlap that may confuse me between them.
Yuwen Yue, Lin Gengxin’s PA character, is more detached, calculating and ruthless than Lord Xingzhi. At least with Xingzhi, you can feel his underlying warmth and compassion behind his godly aura. He can still laugh or smile, whereas Yue’s face is almost always an unreadable mask. The only hint of any emotion is the slight rising of his eyebrows or a narrowing of his eyes.
Zhao Liying’s Xiaoliu/Xing’er is just as ruthless as Shen Li can be, and every bit as formidable a fighter. However, Shen Li is more upright and highly principled, while Xing’er has the selfishnesss and fluid morality borne out of poverty and constant oppression. Xing’er has a very cynical view of life compared to Shen Li.
PA feels more intense to me than TLOS and the emotions involved are heavier. I swoon and thrill at the romance between Xingzhi and Shen Li, while my heart aches terribly for Yue and Xing’er.
(On a side note, Lin Gengxin looks a lot younger in TLOS and much more ethereally handsome.Zhao Liying was almost plain-looking as Xing’er and very young, but as Shen Li, she was more mature and gorgeous.)

And we end on this and them blissfully happy, and together and she's no longer just the general but has blissful peace and he's no longer surrounded by the remnants of the dead but new life and just !!!! This is my fave cdrama of 2024 so far and I am so so so grateful to the makers.

Also, for those like me, who shipped Chu Qiao and Yuwen Yue in Princess Agents back in 2017, we finally got our happy ending 7 years later, people!!!! It has totally healed my PA trauma!

Best character surnamed: Yuwen
Come and vote for the best characters with the same surname!*
What does best mean? It's up to you! Whether you love them, are intrigued by their characters, love to hate them, or they're your '2 second blorbos whose personality you made up wholesale', these are all reasons for you to vote for your favs!
*note, the surnames are not exactly the same in all the cases, as often there will be a different character. I am, however, grouping them all together otherwise things got more complicated.
Propaganda is very welcome! If I’ve forgotten anyone, let me know in the notes.
This is part of a larger series of ‘best character with X surname’ polls’. The overview with ongoing polls, winners, and future polls can be found here

Nirvana in Fire Rewatch Episode Nineteen
Events:
Meng Zhi visits Jingyan, gives him a fright by casually opening the secret passage, and pledges his support in the battle for the throne. He does not outright state that he's working with MCS but he hints it very strongly. They discuss the Chiyan case.
The Emperor stays overnight with Jing-pin and they talk about Jingyan and about Prince Yu. In the morning she gets promoted to fei.
Nihuang is sent back to Yunnan for military reasons. Mu Qing is kept in the capital as a hostage. MCS and Nihuang get upset over parting.
Gong Yu makes an attack on Xie Yu, gets wounded, and takes refuge with Banruo. This is all according to plan.
Yuwen Xuan, Prince Ling of Southern Chu, picks a fight with Mu Qing as everyone's saying goodbye to Nihaung.
Banruo and Prince Yu discuss Liyang's affair with the Chu prince. The Empress told Prince Yu she doesn't know why Liyang married Xie Yu.
Yuwen Nian, the Chu princess, spars with Jingrui. It is very portentous.
Names and titles:
Jingyan calls him 'Meng Zhi' instead of 'Meng-da-tongling' while they discuss the Chiyan case.
MCS refers to Mu Qing as xiao-Qing while talking to Nihuang in private.
The Chu princess is called Niannian by her brother, in public.
Characters:
Our first look at how Consort Jing deals with the Emperor.
Banruo and Prince Yu both dismiss Consort Jing's promotion as unimportant.
The excuse for keeping Mu Qing as a hostage is that the Grand Dowager can't bear to part with him, so she must have a grandmotherly relationship to him as well.
Mu Qing's presence in Yunnan is not militarily significant, Nihuang's is. The Chu prince teases him about that - it must be a common occurrence.
MCS tells Nihuang he wishes he was just Lin Shu again.
MCS asks after Gong Yu's injury with some concern.
Meng Zhi claps MCS on the shoulder, and Fei Liu takes offence and they nearly fight over it. This isn't significant, but it's hilarious.
Yue Niuze was number 6 on the Langya list. He recently defeated number five. He has twice fought Master Zhuo, who's number 4, and is thought to be gunning for him again.
Time:
Nihuang has been in the capital about half a year, maybe a bit more. That's regarded as a long visit.
Misc:
There's a tiny moment when the eunuch who's delivering an edict to Prince Yu angles for his favour.
The Southern Chu party doesn't travel or arrive in Jinling with nearly enough pomp - budget issues I guess.

Annals of Emperor Wen of Zhou, Part 2 (ZS01)
Heba Yue might be dead, but Yuwen Tai still lives.
1st Year of Taichang [532 AD], Yue became Great Acting Tribunal of Guanxi. He used Taizu as Assistant of the Left, acting as Yue's Marshal of the Office, concurrently Cavalier Regular Attendant. There were no affairs [too] large or small, in everything he was entrusted with deciding them.
When Shenwu of Qi had routed the Erzhu, he thereupon took control over the court and government. Taizu requested to go and observe him. When he had arrived in Bing province, Shenwu of Qi asked about affairs in Yue's army. Taizu's oral answers were gallant and articulate. Shenwu of Qi consider him to be not an ordinary person, and wanted to keep him behind. Taizu pretended to pledge his loyal devotion, and therefore obtained instructions to go back. Thereupon he at starlight proceeded on the road. Shenwu of Qi actually did dispatch [someone] to pursue him, they reached the Passes without catching up.
Taziu returned back and spoke to Yue, saying:
Gao Huan is not someone who serves others. That his disobedient plans have not yet issued out is for fear of Your Excellency and brothers, that is all. However, of everyone who have desired to establish great merit and save the altars of soil and grain, there have not yet been one who did not make use of the circumstances of the land to bring together the noble and gallant, and then was able to achieve success.
Houmochen Yue¤ originally was of truly of mediocre materiel, by coincidence he happened then upon unearned reliance and trust. Just now he is without heart for worrying about the state, and likewise is not hated by Gao Huan. Only be prepared for him, and planning against him is not difficult.
Now the cavalry of the Feiyetou's bow string are not less than ten thousand and the soldiers of the Inspector of Xia province, Huba Mi'etu's victorious troops are more than three thousand. Coming to the Inspector of Ling province, Cao Ni, he also relies on his out-of-the-way remoteness, and often holds close divergent expectations. The drifting people of Hexi, Hedouling Yili and others, their households and mouths are wealthy and prosperous, but not yet receiving the airs of the court.
Now suppose [we] move the army near Long, seize their strategic points, make a display for them with power and defer to them with virtue, then [we] can gather their soldiers and horses to supply our army. To the west [we] arrange the Di and Qiang, to north console the sandy frontier, [then we] return the army to Chang'an to save and assist the House of Wei. This is what Huan and Wen raised up.
Yue was greatly pleased, and then dispatched Taizu to go to the palace to request to render service and in confidence lay out their situation. The Wei Emperor deeply adopted it. He promoted Taizu to General of Martial Guards, and he turned back with orders to report to Yue. Yue thereupon guided the army west to stay at Pingliang. He made plans with his multitudes, saying:
Xia province is in a neighbourhood of bandits and traitors,[we] must increase soothing and consoling. How to obtain a good Inspector to garrison it?
The multitudes all said:
Assistant of the Left Yuwen is precisely that person.
Yue said:
The Assistant of the Left is my left and right hands, how could he be dispersed with?
He was lost in thoughts for a number of days, and then followed the multitudes' opinion. Hence he petitioned for Taizu to become Envoy Holding the Tally, General of Martial Guards, and Inspector of Xia province. Taizu arrived in the province. Yili looked up to his manners and devotedly adhered, but Cao Ni still exchanged envoys with Shenwu of Qi.
Wei's 3rd Year of Yongxi, Spring, 1st Month [30 January – 28 January 534], Yue wished to chastise Cao Ni. He dispatched Chief Controller Zhao Gui to arrive at Xia province and plan out the affair with Taizu. Taizu said:
Cao Ni is in a lonely city blocked off and far away, is not yet sufficient to be of concern. Houmochen Yue¤ depends on the multitudes and is intimate and nearby. He is greedy and untrustworthy, and surely about to become a problem. [I] want to soon plot against him.
Yue did not listen, and thereupon he and Yue¤ chastised Ni together.
2nd Month [1 March – 29 March], they arrived at Hequ. Yue in the end was murdered by Yue¤, and his soldiers and multitudes scattered back to Pingliang. Only Great Chief Controller Zhao Gui led his personal retinue to gather Yue's corpse and return to camp.
And so the Three Armies had not anywhere to belong. The various generals, as Chief Controller Kou Luo was the most senior in age, together were pushing forward Luo to control military affairs. Luo was habitually without gallant schemes, and made imposing orders but did not act. He therefore spoke to the various generals, saying:
Luo's wisdom and ability is fundamentally lacking, and not suitable to command and steer. Those nearby who are pressing it into the crowd's discussion are pushing each other forward to administer and lead. Now [I] request to turn down the position, and furthermore to select a worthy talent.
And so Zhao Gui talked to the multitudes, saying:
The supreme leader was loyal, just, and entirely steadfast. With violence in court and countryside, his meritorious legacy were not attained, and suddenly he suffered a baleful cruelty. How though will the state mourns a good steward, when in fact also the multitudes are without anyone to rely on? Surely [if we] want to bring [us] together in the same oath, and respond in kind to wipe away the shame, [we] must chose someone worthy for overall command of the various armies. If the one raised up is not that man, then the great affair will be difficult to accomplish. Even if [we] want to set up loyalty and establish righteousness, that can be obtained.
I took the liberty to observe Yuwen of Xia province. His noble bearing is not of [this] generation, and his gallant strategies are ahead of the times. Distant and near turn their hearts [to him], officers and enlisted employ his instructions. He applies laws and orders with uniform dignity, his rewards and penalties are strict and clear, he is genuinely enough to trust in. Now if we report our grief, he will surely come and hurry to the difficulties. Following that, if we then respectfully offer him, the great affair will be accomplished.
The various generals all declared it good. They therefore instructed Helian Da to hurry to reach Xia province. He reported to Taizu, saying:
Houmochen Yue¤ did not care about his sworn oath, he threw away kindness and turned his back to virtue, and traitorously murdered the loyal and good. The crowd feel indignant and resentful, and complain and entreat about having nothing.
Your Excellency formerly occupied the control and management, your kindness and trust seen and heard. Now there are none too small and none too great, everyone desire to push forward to defer to [you]. The multitudes' thoughts about Your Excellency stretches the day [to?] a complete year. [I] wish [you] will not delay or stop, but comfort the multitudes' expectations.
Taizu was about to go with him. The magistrates and people of Xia province all sobbingly requested, saying:
[We] hear that Yue¤ now is at Shuiluo, the distance to Pingliang is not far. Suppose he already has Excellency Heba's multitudes, then plotting against him will truly be difficult. [We] wish [you] furthermore to stop and halt, and so watch his changes.
Taizu said:
When Yue¤ had murdered the supreme leader, he ought himself to have exploited the circumstances to straight-away occupy Pingliang. Yet he turns around shifting and stumbling, and stations troops at Shuiluo. I understand there is nothing he is able to do. Moreover, what is difficult to gain and easy to lose is the time, and what not to wait for all day is the moment. Now [if I] do not proceed soon, [I] soon fear the multitudes' hearts will stray away themselves.
Chief Controller Mijie Yuanjin made plans with intention of responding to Yue¤, and covertly plotted against Taizu. The affair came out, and he beheaded him.
Taizu then led his followers and light cavalry, and hurriedly proceeded to Pingliang. At the time Shenwu of Qi dispatched Senior Clerk Hou Jing to recruit and guide Yue's multitudes. Taizu arrived at Anding, and encountered him. He spoke to Jing, saying:
Though Excellency Heba is dead, Yuwen Tai still lives. What will my dear sir do about it?
Jing turned pale, and replied saying:
I am like an arrow, that is all. After being shot out by a person, how might I control myself.
Jing with that promptly turned back.
Taizu arrived at Pingliang, and wept for Yue with considerable grief. The generals and soldiers were both saddened and delighted, saying:
Excellency Yuwen arrived, there is nothing to be anxious about.

small starter for @pctaldrunk  ||  Yuwen Yue & Daji
Power often belonged to those who were willing to rip it from the hands of others. It was a bloody affair, but Daji was more than willing to bask in the influence it brought her. But blood was not the only currency at her disposal, and she willed slight tears into existence.
“I will take the blame, all of it, if you deem it just. After all, I know I am nothing compared to the lord in front of me.”

Almost to the end of Princess Agents! (Ep 43):
-Yuwen Yue has game so negative it's in the void, but then he pulls one liners like "I want you to owe me for the rest of your life" out of nowhere and I'm like SIR
- love yan xun going full goth barbarian for his villain arc. eyes are winged so sharp they can kill a man
- WHEN CHU QIAO WENT BACK TO SAVE THE ARMY!!!(!!!!)
- probably an unpopular opinion but I can't stand yuan chun. at all. I'm at the point where I'm fast forwarding her scenes and I'm generally a li qin fan
-deng lun showing up with like 10 eps left in the whole series and still making the main character poster. ok work lol
-"I misjudged you."
"You didn't misjudge me. You just didn't understand all of me" 💯

I feel like Chinese dramas (or at least the ones I’ve been watching) have steadily moved up in terms of how much emotion the male lead displays. On a scale of Bai Zi Hua to Ning Yi, these have been my observations from least to most emotive male leads:
Tumblr media
Bai Zi Hua (The Journey of Flower): the ultimate cold shifu who couldn’t actually admit he loved the girl until she died trying to prove that he loved her.
Tumblr media
Yuwen Yue (Princess Agents): not much better at expressing emotion than Bai Zi Hua but at least he tried
Tumblr media
Li Cheng Yin (Goodbye My Princess): he was terrible at expressing his love but at least he could admit that he loved her despite all the horrible things he was doing “for her”
Tumblr media
Ye Hua (Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms): a precious bean. Sincere and loving though he wasn’t always that way (re: Su Su) but at least he got there in the end
Tumblr media
Xu Feng (Ashes of Love): adorable, honest and knew what he wanted and admitted as much up front. Too bad he was trying to love an emotionally cursed girl but they got there eventually
Tumblr media
Ning Yi (The Rise of Phoenixes): a consummate flirt but damn, he’s good at expressing himself. He may not be overly forthcoming with his affections but his microexpressions and actions speak louder than words!
And there we have it - my personal ranking of emotion kings and no surprise that my current favourite Ning Yi is reigning supreme. I’m liking this change to more emotional characters rather than the standard cold lead. Makes things much more interesting!
