The one negative when it comes to watching asian dramas that were based off of novels is that often times things won't make sense and you just have to accept that.
Due to budget or time constraints or censorship laws, etc etc etc, things will inevitably have to be changed, modified, or left out, and often times things that would have made perfect sense in the novel will either be left unexplained in the drama, or be modified in such a way that it no longer makes any sense.
Probably one of the most obvious/well-known examples of this would be in The Untamed, when Wei Wuxian asks Lan Wangji to lend him his headband to use as a blindfold.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't think I need to explain why that sounded absolutely ridiculous to drama-only fans (myself included).

This MV for The Rise of Phoenixes is AMAZING!
Ning Yi is in my top 5 cdrama characters of all time and that drama is a rare cdrama that broke me (Royal Nirvana, The Myth, and middle stretch of Novoland Eagle Flag are the only other cdramas that did.)
So good!
It's also in my top 10 cdramas for a reason. (In case anyone is interested, the other 9 in that top 10, in no order, are The Story of Minglan, The Myth, Rebel Princess, Novoland Eagle Flag, Joy of Life, Goodbye My Princess, Ever Night 1, Love Between Fairy and Devil, and Love and Redemption. LYF and/or Eternal Brotherhood might replace one of them if the second parts hold. So may Shen Li but I finished it too recently to be objective. Royal Nirvana, Three Kingdoms 2010, The Advisors' Alliance, Legend of Condor Heroes 2008, Bu Bu Jing Xin and Heroes 2022 will be in there if I am expanding to 15.)

Asian male leads that went against the norms and redefined thirst traps for you?
For me it was lee joon gi from flower of evil! Who is the genius tell me!!! That decided to make this meticulous, detail oriented crafty man who is painted as a violent sociopath but turns out to be a huuuuuge softie in need of love and just wants to make his family happy and get some cuddles and stuff
my brain's a little too fuzzy right now so idk about going against the norms, but here's some favorite Characters That Are Just Hot
ma dong seok as yoon sang hwa | train to busan
Tumblr media
he loves his wife and unborn baby. he wears a fancy lil scarf. he'll punch you into the roof of a train car. the sheer bruhery of this guy.
jang hyuk as park gye won | bloody heart
Tumblr media
look this whole post could just be jang hyuk characters (his character in chuno i think is the quintessential definition of a thirst trap), but this character gets a special shout-out because he works the least sexiest outfit of Royal Minister for the duration of the drama and also the atrocities??
wi ha joon as choi do il | little women
Tumblr media
the clown wigs i wore throughout this entire drama because of this guy. sort of like a human trojan horse but snaccify it. being toxic in his little outfits 10/10
chen kun as ning yi | the rise of phoenixes
Tumblr media
mansplain. manipulate. malewife. "chen kun with long hair" is a Movement.
shin sung rok as kim seo jin | kairos
Tumblr media
when you like them flawed and morally ambiguous and in desperate need of a divorce. "i can fix him" but if fixing him required you to probably stab someone in an infinite time loop down the road
shin ha kyun as lee dong sik | beyond evil
Tumblr media
he's done nothing wrong in his entire life except for perhaps inspiring the thousands of morally ambiguous daddy complexes that emerged from this drama
BONUS! some ladies
ha ji won as sung nyang | empress ki
Tumblr media
she'll get your whole family killed and ruin your career and you'll thank her for it
lee si young as seo yi kyung | sweet home
Tumblr media
ma'am.
kim ok bin as taealha | arthdal chronicles
Tumblr media
she's scary (appreciative)

I think one of the most interesting things The Rise of Phoenixes does is show how growing up in a situation where you and your siblings have to compete for your dad’s approval and attention (that is, an abusive situation) really erodes the fundamental sibling relationship (another example of this in media being Nebula and Gamora from Guardians of The Galaxy, sorry to use a Marvel example but it’s right there). This even goes far enough that although Ning Yi clearly rationally thinks he doesn’t want to kill most of his siblings and he knows it’s all because of how they’ve grown up, he still doesn’t feel significant remorse for killing them. This is partly because most of them have personally killed maimed or manipulated someone he loves, but it’s also because he tends to place the blame for their deaths squarely with his father and not himself. (He is the executioner of his father’s will when he kills Ning Chuan, not a power hungry fratricidal maniac) Shaoning, Ning Yan, Ning Chuan, and Ning Sheng are not his fault, even when he does think he bears responsibility (as in the case of Shaoning). Contrastingly, Feng Zhiwei, who grew up in a comparatively happier household, is absolutely unwilling to accept the deaths of her siblings (sworn and actual) as the natural consequence of their environment, even when that death is basically suicide by cop and literally not her fault whatsoever. Zhiwei self-blames, Ning Yi externalizes.

Who can seed this torrent???
Guys, "Rise of Phoenixes" is no longer on netflix and the only complete torrent I can find has zero seeders.
Have you used this torrent in the past? Can you seed it? Or, if you have all 70 eps and their subs (or hard baked into the video is also fine!!) would you be willing to make a new torrent we can all use so we can grab copies of the show since we have no idea when it will ever come back?
I can't put in a link *and* put a post in the tags- tumblr will block it. But the name of the torrent itself is "The Rise of Phoenixes (Complete)", very simple, looks like 70 files and I'm assuming the subs are hard baked since they do not have a separate file.
If you can seed but need a new link to the torrent, DM me and I will message it to you asap so we can get this ball rolling. If you have different files and are willing to make a new torrent of the complete series with subs, please post to r/cdrama (bonus if you can dm me a link!).
Thanks guys-- let's see if we can save the show a little.
Reblogs to spread the word are super loved and appreciated, please let's see if we can find any seeders, which would be the easiest course. <33333

《 天盛长歌 》The Rise of Phoenixes (2018)  ⤷ Feng Zhi Wei is the unfavored daughter of the Qiu Family, who has to flee due to unfortunate circumstances. Owing a favour to the 6th prince Ning Yi, Zhi Wei dresses as a man to attend the prestigious Qingming Academy and becomes the supreme scholar to the Emperor. She remains loyal and honest to the reigning Emperor during the princes’ fight for the throne while falling in love with Ning Yi who seeks to unravel mysteries from his past and seek revenge for his beloved ones.  Although their love for each other is true, can they maneuver the scheming and countless hurdles thrown their way?

Favorite dramas in term of cinematography?
nice!
bloody heart. unquestionably the most beautiful drama i have ever seen. and it's using a color palette i dont often see in kdramas (bring on those saturated autumnal jewel tones, baby)
my liberation notes. such an intentional drama? the filming does a lot of work to fill the silences from the character's dialogue in a meaningful way.
mr. sunshine. really gorgeous shots, particularly wide shots of landscapes. the way interactions are framed is also really beautiful
one spring night. the way everything is filmed does a great job of creating intimacy. i especially like the night/outdoor shots
goblin. this drama was expensive and it showed!!
cheese in the trap. the framing in this drama was really clever. in particular, a scene that always sticks out is when the male lead catches the female lead and sml walking home together. the drama didnt feel a need to do the typical REACTION SHOT ZOOM IN and instead you see the male lead literally fade into the background, it's great. i also love the autumn color palette and how space was achieved
rainless love in a godless land. beautiful!!!!!!! the cinematography was a major draw for this drama. those beach scenes with god? chef’s kiss.
kingdom, especially season 2. the camera work definitely contributes to the atmosphere, which is incredibly important in horror
the guest. this show is CREEPY and so much of it is due to framing and camerawork
goodbye my princess. this one is sort of a merge between set design, costume design, and cinematography but gd if it's not one of the prettiest dramas ive ever seen
the rise of phoenixes. super gorgeous!!
more than friends. while watching i joked that the show was basically a big promo for an upcoming artbook on seoul
