long-term hiatus notice

Hi everyone, just wanted to let you know that I’ll be taking a break from scanlation starting this December 🙏 I’m not sure if I’ll be returning to scanlation/translation anytime soon (not for another half a year at least) — have been pretty overstretched keeping up with the chapters recently, and I need the time to handle work/life as it is m(_ _)m

If anyone’s been considering taking up this series, as always please feel free to go ahead! I’ll still hang around and respond to messages etc., just that chapters will no longer be released 👀

Anyways, Ch9 of The Remains will be released on 4 Dec! If you want to read the (raw) chapter as soon as it drops, this’ll be a great opportunity to buy the monthly magazine 😆 (links here if you need them!)

Callbacks to the light novels

On Page 1 of this chapter, Louis mentions some tales in passing. In order of appearance, these are: Book 1 Story 2 (Louis and the Aquaria), Book 1 Story 3 (Albert’s Drinking Contest), and Book 2 Story 2 (There’s No Business Like Show Business).

Callback to Ch71

William’s handshake with Helena Curtis mirrors the same scene with the other Helena in New York, in Ch71 of the main manga.

The Girl Who Sees Rainbows…?

The official English title given for this story is “The Girl Gazing at the Rainbow”. This is due to the use of 視る rather than 見る in the Japanese title — while both words mean “to see”, the former kanji is used to emphasise “looking intently”, and hence “gazing”.

While I will be using the official English title in this arc's chapters, I still stand by my original version of it (“The Girl Who Sees Rainbows”) in the light novel translation, as I think it sounds more natural and succinct in English. 😅

Where might The Remains be going next?

My sensing is that subsequent chapters will adapt the rest of the third light novel, since [spoilers!!] the three stories within it are all connected 😆 That would mean the rest of the cast will be getting some time to shine too (including the 221B gang!) ☺️

Really hope they’ll adapt Forbidden Games (Book 2 Story 1) in between those chapters — maybe as a side story/minor digression from the plot? It would be such a missed opportunity if it doesn’t turn up in The Remains ( ; ω ; )

Hi! Do you by any chance know if we'll be able to buy the Moriarty the Patriot light novels in English? Or where to buy them in general?

Hello :) The light novels have not been licensed in English yet, so for now you can only obtain them in either the original Japanese, or Mandarin. (I'm not sure if it has been officially translated to other languages beyond Mandarin.)

For the Japanese novels, you can purchase them as either physical books or electronic ones. Here's the official website for the first light novel, with links to various online bookstores where you can buy the electronic versions. (Here are the links for Book 2 and Book 3 as well.)

If you want the physical books, you can either buy them online (I usually use Amazon JP), or go to the manga section of a Japanese bookstore (they'll be placed together with the Moriarty the Patriot manga).

A quick update that Ch4 of The Remains will only be released next week at the earliest, hopefully before July comes around 🙇🏻‍♀️ (The past two weeks have been super-busy...)

Another reminder that anyone who would like to scanlate the series should feel free to go ahead! Update schedule

The current update schedule will be 3 weeks after the chapter release. I’ll try to push them out as quick as I can, but do remember that The Remains chapters are much longer than the main series’ (in terms of redrawing and words) — so despite a similar page count, there’s a lot more work to be done 🥲

chapter update: mid-april

A quick update that I'm in the middle of typesetting right now, so Ch2 of The Remains will be released nearer the end of this week |ω･)ﾉ That would make it 3 weeks since the chapter release on 4 April (JST), similar to the previous chapter.

I'll share more about the expected release schedule for The Remains in the upcoming update post, now that I have a better idea of what to expect.

my stance on e-pub versions of the light novel TLs

Recently, I've noticed an increasing number of asks about turning my light novel translations into epub/PDF versions for offline reading. As such, I've decided to clarify my stance on this upfront:

📌 My stance on offline versions

I'm alright with others compiling the translations into offline versions (epubs, PDFs etc.), as long as the following conditions are respected:

The files are not shared publicly, whether online or physically;

The files are not monetised (i.e. you are not making any money from their creation and/or distribution);

Credit is given to teawaffles.tumblr.com within the files themselves

A brief rationale for this

No public sharing

The light novel TLs are still being updated, especially now that the serialisation of The Remains gives me an opportunity to relook the TL and fix mistakes. Publicly sharing the epub files will only lead to more people reading an outdated version of the translations :(

While I do appreciate that there are some who prefer to read the novels offline, please remember that this work isn't yours to distribute! A lot of time and effort was poured into writing the translations — and then to have that work turned into files and publicly distributed by someone else (even with the best of intentions) honestly feels awful 😢

Lastly, it is not strictly legal to post fan-translations online. Publicly distributing the fan-TLs as files can cause a whole lot of trouble, especially in the event that the novels become licensed in English 😥

That said, I would like to draw your attention to the emphasis on public sharing — it's okay if you want to share your epub versions of the TLs with friends on private channels! The key thing I want to avoid is a situation where anyone can simply do a Google search for epub versions of the TLs, and download them.

No monetisation

These translations were shared freely so that more people can read these stories — they are not for you to profit from 🙏 I hope you can respect the intent with which the TLs were shared with you, and pay it forward should you wish to distribute your epub versions privately.

Credit within the files

This one should be straightforward: leaving the credit within the files themselves will ensure proper attribution whenever the files are shared. In addition, leaving a direct link back to this blog will allow the reader to find the latest version of the TLs.

A closing note

In conclusion, as long as you respect the above conditions, there is no need to contact me separately should you wish to turn the light novel TLs into epubs 🙏

Also, I wanted to highlight that I personally maintain backups of the light novel TLs (and all other Yuumori TLs too), so there is no need to archive the translations for the sole purpose of preventing them from vanishing |･ω･)

If that is a concern for you, you may wish to find private fandom discussion channels where such material is archived off the public web...
