reblogging this bc i’m thinking about them so heavily…….i love chatting up about them
howdy howdy!!! do u have any thoughts on jack’s background? I think it’s really interesting the few tidbits we have (Illinois Boy™️, the Oh Calcutta story, getting his start in radio) + in the case of those first two its like. clearly been told time and time again for an audience. or if you’d prefer something else any thoughts on minnie 🙏😭 haunting the narrative icon
hello hello ! i so wish we’d gotten a little bit more about him but i’ve always imagined jack as being a little more introverted in his younger years? i think he really enjoys validation and this is such a difficult thing to achieve as someone as slightly awkward as jack. (don’t know why. maybe i just enjoy pathetic men but his blushing at naked bodies and his little “oh! not my chair!” has always made me feel like he has had to build up this persona he has made for himself) charming and quick-witted but very easily crumbles whenever he’s in an uncomfortable position (he seems to almost dissociate often?)
i think he might’ve been in some sort of college radio and broadcast (i’ve discussed this with a friend before!), and he was just so happy to build an audience. there’s no mention of his parents (my memory is foggy!) so part of me thinks that they’re either not in the picture or he’s lost them? so you know,,, mommy and daddy issues galore despite either one. maybe even one of them didn’t think being someone on television would maintain a steady flow of income. regardless, it might make him more interested in gaining that connection with the audience, getting validated for his feelings. getting praise for it. no you’re so cool please continue to make your show! i’m such a big fan!
he doesn’t know who is there for him as Mr. Midnight and who is there for him Jack Delroy so he blurs the line and vents to his audience, looks at the camera with every intention to impress.
i imagine meeting minnie was very sweet though. they were both sort of up and coming and it’s nice to have someone who understands that struggle! i imagine minnie being in theatre makes her the more extroverted out of the two ! (she was the one sharing stories and jack getting shy about them!), but also a lot more open about her emotions. jack seems like someone who keeps to himself and doesn’t quite understand how to communicate well (he does hide a lot from others when they ask what’s going on. might just be that 70s toxic masculinity upbringing that makes him unable to express these,, daddy issues? who knows!)
i do fully believe he loved her though! younger jack probably never dreamed of finding a girl like minnie. maybe a bit of idealization for her occurred earlier on but minnie was so fresh and bright and full of life even during her time spent ill that i always thought she just good humor and a knack for just being naturally talented at the arts.
which is a big difference between the two! minnie just had that spark of life, she was always going to end up being someone big, she knew how to capture a room. jack was awkward and had to find his voice, he had to learn what people liked, what good jokes landed and how to deliver them, he had to work hard (and i don’t mean this as minnie not working hard! jack just had to work to become this persona while minnie was able to become her characters almost immediately, she’s able to understand their emotions and feel for them immediately. i think it makes her a much more empathetic person while jack is a lot more sympathetic. jack needs to be verbally told what people are feeling which might be why ratings are so comforting. they’re either good or bad! they’re easy to read.) and become who we know as Mr. Midnight. something of an artist obsessed with not their craft but what their craft will mean to others
sorry if this wasn’t exactly background stuff pfft! i more so focused on how their personalities were! i do think that minnie was possibly in dance, and has that ability to be able to play a song after she hears it on time on the piano. i think she has to teach jack how to pick up on it though, he’s sort of stumbling and his keys are sour baha. he probably used to stay up late studying little mannerisms talk shows had. i think he has a natural charm to him but that charm is a lot more meek than what we see? i love them both dearly,,,

i fully think lilly wasn’t able to get hypnotized whenever they were making everyone believe gus full of worms hence her giggling. like to her, this was just a grown man randomly panicking out of nowhere and it was odd to her! it would also explain why she asked june what had happened since she noticed everyone so upset ! (she is my daughter and knows no wrong)

Do you have anyone to talk about stuff with? Or are you just raw dogging it? Are there more people out there like you or did they throw away the mould after they made you.. I ponder
this is the funniest ask i've ever gotten. your concern is charming, anon, i love you,, i'm going to assume that you mean if i have someone to talk to about my interests (and i do!) but if you mean my emotional state, not to worry, i also do ! the mold that was made to create me had to be destroyed afterwards in fear that i would cause too much worry to the general public. the entire field of psychology is actually made to figure out specially what is going on in my head.
this is also an invitation to anyone that would like to chat to message me ! or just continue doing anon, whatever is most comfortable to you guys ! <3

I thought the grove and the cult were the same thing? Now I'm confused by the fact that they may not be? Then how did Jack find out about the cult in the first place, it had to have been before Minnie passed, because I believe it's hinted at that the deal he made with the devil is what killed her, and that he just put her out of her suffering by her own command. So how did he find the cult? And then why would the grove have such importance (I also thought that the grove was what was being shown during the photo sequence during Jack's hallucination near the end) if you can explain please do! /Nf
hi, anon! i'll explain a bit of the different groups and my thoughts on where they overlap!
the grove is something that actually exists in real life! it's a private gentleman's club that is made up of some of the most powerful men. some of these include past presidents, executives, high ranking officials, business leaders, artists & musicians. they do a two week encampment together during july in this very large land they have (called bohemian grove!). they have different camps and I suspect the owl in the film was supposed to let us know that we were in Owl's Nest (one of the camps!) since the founding of the club, the bohemian grove's mascot has been an owl, symbolizing wisdom. a 30-foot hollow owl statue made of concrete over steel supports stands at the head of the lake in the grove. it designed by sculptor and two-time club president Haig Patigian (wonder if this is why carmichael's ;ast name is haig, hah). the owl shrine has served as the backdrop of the yearly cremation of care ceremony. imagine the grove as some place where the rich and powerful men can basically say "this is for boy's only !!!!" and pretend as though they are the most hedonistic men ever without any care for the world. they do have some suspicion of it having to do with the occult but they basically get to roleplay pseduo-pagan spookiness. they're what is shown in the beginning of the film in those black and white images.
as for the cult, they worship a demon named abraxas! they're the ones that are confirmed to have done human sacrifices and where lilly came from. this is a "real" cult in the film. i tried to research a bit more on abraxas and i have seen some different things but i think carl jung describing abraxas as the "god of all gods" perfectly encapsulates what the cult is for. they are the ones that jack seemingly sacrificed minnie for as she was killed using their dagger.
i've got a few ideas of how jack stumbled upon the cult here and here ! however, i have no doubt in mind that there is an overlap between grove members and some of the cult ! they love powerful people and it seems as though they think being in the cult will lead them to said power. really, even the network in of itself is a cult of some sort that you have to sacrifice everything for and in front of the camera in order to show everyone just how bad you want something.
i think both were something jack ran to in desperation and he has been damned by both hence him seeing both of these at the end. he kneels before the owl (kneels before power!) and drinks what i assume is blood to demonstrate what he is willing to do for the cult - an initiation of some sort.
i hope this cleared some things up or made sense ! wrote this a bit rushed so my apologies !

Who do you think would be madly in love with you based on your posts?
i enjoy a lot of david’s characters as well as paul dano’s but i fear based on my posts and interests they would all see me as a concern rather than a lover,,,,(this just stems from me being unable to perceive myself so im not completely sure about it!)

I dont have any thoughts on gus really besides inlove him. Me and a friend pf mine are obsessed. Hes everything to us. Do you have any thoughts or theories?
i just wrote a bit about Gus here ! it's not my best work but it is a little bit more on him ! i loved him first watch and i still love that guy a ton !
i think gus is meant to be someone the viewer is meant to live through at times. his exasperation for how things are going is something i think we can all relate to, but it is his emotional connection with everyone that keeps him there. i think it's what makes him so human to me. the decision to think your love and care will save you. that it is returned the way that you give it out.
but if anything he's just seen as this little set piece and nothing more. not really as a whole person. someone just to entertain, to be used as a punchline, to be one of the people that suffers for the views because he can just slap on a smile afterwards after he is told to! he's like the little angel on jack's shoulder (ironically dressed as the devil). he is who attempts to find any jack delroy inside this empty husk of a man filled with guilt and sin

Men & Glory: The Revered and The Reviled
Tumblr media
God told me I was forgiven and then he split me open
Late Night With The Devil places a lot of emphasis on worship. Be that a religion, a lover, wealth or power. But it feels an awful lot like at the end of this worship always lies another man. An all-seeing powerful one that you feel less than around, one that you can comfort yourself (or fear) in knowing they are what is leading your life for you.
Before I had even finished the film, and I saw Gus beginning to split himself open to rid himself of the worms that lived inside of him, those that were a constant paranoia he thought he only had to worry about externally, unaware that his fear was so deep inside of him that it become the perfect home for it, I noticed he wore a cross.
Not that a cross is anything out of the ordinary to see on someone. But he wore it underneath his clothes, near his chest, dear to him. A succor. It's especially ironic since he was dressed as the devil earlier in the film. But he took it off surprisingly soon (I thought he was going to wear it the entire night since it was a Halloween special!).
I'm not sure where I'm headed with this specifically but him wearing a devil costume despite being the only character we see show devotion to a religion is making me want to dig a little deeper. Something about how much he is willing to do for the network. For Jack. Going against belief for the sake of others. Did he believe he was being punished for that? For caring for Jack?
Gus is awfully selfless in every action that he seems to take. I don't think anything he did in the film came from self-interest. He was concerned for his own safety, of course, but him constantly saying the crew and him spoke gave indication he was a solace for them, someone to go to when things got hard. He was worried for everyone!
I think he has been with Jack for so many years and has seen the man go through so much that he thought Jack seemed to act in a feverish way. But what seemed to really get me is that he told Jack he was not a bad man. Jack, you're a good man. You know better than this. You are not yourself. I know you.
But of course, he is always dismissed in his concerns. Almost in an emasculating way. He's just the sidekick to Jack, the comedic relief, the one who doesn't quite get the jokes that Jack says. Less than. On screen that is. You would think they know Gus is just playing the part but the way he is condescended seems to show otherwise, like they cannot differentiate between him on camera and off. The lines have blurred. Gus you need to learn to just take it. You don't have control around here. None of us do.
It's like being punished for stepping out of line. For committing the sin of putting himself first before the God they worship and that God is the network. This all knowing presence that rewards you for how much blood you are able to feed into it. You must dedicate yourself to it. It demands it. You and I might worship different things, Gus, but we both know that they're both bigger than you and I.
You have made the mistake of viewing Jack as the one that had any charge. As much as you plead for him to return to that old friend of yours, he is long gone. If he was split open, the worms you fear so much would fall right out of him the same as you. He is nothing but a man. You have given him the glory that is reserved only for kings. And as Jack's last name implies (Delroy = Of The King), he is not a king but rather belonging to one. He is a hunting dog taking orders. And you the prey. And the worms will return you back to the dirt. You will become one with them. But even then, that is not enough. The worms that eat you do not die and their fire is not quenched.
