Astro Boy/Atom's backstory is genuinely super tragic from an in-universe standpoint, but from a distant/meta perspective, it's like through Tenma, Osamu Tezuka predicted some people's extreme ambivalence about very cutesy, stylized, non-naturalistic anime characters.

Develop intense attachment to anime characters, remember that they're just a copy of the real thing (and might even find them uncanny when reminded they don't quite look 'alive' on a primal level the way a human/ape is), get angry, and lash out at the anime characters because of unprocessed self-disgust for wanting that escapism in the first place.
