you know i think the funniest thing about sauron/mairon is that he has been described as “fair” 7 times in the book, higher than any other characters including luthien, and she is supposedly the most beautiful woman in that fictional universe,, like somebody actually did a count on it

And just to confirm that Sauron definitely has Thoughts about aesthetics and style, here's a quote from Two Towers where Éomer complains about Sauron's orcs stealing specific horses when the Rohirrim didn't agree to sell them to Sauron.

‘Then you do not pay tribute to Sauron?’ said Gimli. ‘We do not and we never have,’ said Éomer with a flash of his eyes; ‘though it comes to my ears that that lie has been told. So looks like our Dork Lord is pretty committed to his style choices. No wonder he had created Galadriel's outfit to fit the proposal scene! Personally, I'm pretty sure he had designed a whole wardrobe for his queen-to-be. Jewelry of course included. A throne too, right next to his.

But going back to the horses.

Of course our Dork Lord would decide that since he turned 100% evil again, he can only use black horses. No, other horse coat colors don't fit his Evil Aesthetics though he didn't mind them when he was trying to be good and make Galadriel like him. So when he's back to his dastardly evil ways? Only the most evil look is good enough. Only black horses are Sauron approved.

It's just that other horses just don't have the right appearance, they don't look sinister enough for the darkest of dark lords in the history of Arda. Everything needs to look the part in case Galadriel is watching and feeling guilty about rejecting him and making him Bad again.

I'm also pretty sure he distributed a pamphlet like this to his orcs so they knew what horses he wanted them to steal and which ones he didn't. Or did he have a discussion with them, instructing them to only steal the black ones? Something along these lines:

Sauron: OK, we need more horses and since we couldn't buy them, go steal them. Random orc: My lord? Sauron: Specific horses, mind you! Don't steal just any random horses you see. Random orc: Uhhh, my lord..? Sauron: The black ones. I want black horses. Don't bother bringing me grey or brown ones. And definitely not the white ones! Bad memories. And that stupid wizard who Galadriel likes rides one too! Random orc 2: Don't ask. The last one who asked why the coat colors matter got fed to Shelob while the Dark Lord muttered something about aesthetics and no one understanding his vision. Random orc: Right. No questions, just black horses. Got it. Random orc: We'll get right to it m'lord. We'll bring you the blackest horses you've ever seen! No problem at all. They really don't pay us enough for this..

Though I gotta wonder why Rohan simply didn't stop breeding black horses. Imagine if they only had white or grey horses, bet Sauron wouldn't have stolen any of them. Wouldn't really fit his Dark Lord image now would they?
