About the AO3 "No Guest Comments for a while" warning

If you're not following any of AO3's social media accounts you might be in the dark as to what kind of "spam comments" have engendered this banner at the top of the site:

These spam comments have been posted about a great deal on the AO3 subreddit for the past couple of days. Initially they comprised a bunch of guest (logged out users) bot comments that insulted authors by suggesting they were using AI and not writing their own fics. Some examples, from the subreddit:

But it then escalated to outright graphic porn images and gifs being posted in comments, again by logged out 'Guest' accounts. Obviously, I'm not going to give examples of those, but between these two bot infestations, AO3 has clearly decided to act and has temporarily closed the ability to post comments for users who are not logged in with an AO3 account.

Unfortunately, this means that genuine readers who don't have an AO3 account won't be able to leave comments on fics that they enjoy.

If you are a genuine reader who doesn't yet have an AO3 account, I strongly suggest getting yourself on the waiting list for one. More and more AO3 authors are now locking their fics down to registered users only - either due to these bot comments or concerns about AI scraping their work - which means you're probably missing out on a lot of great stuff.

Hopefully guest commenting will be enabled again at some point soon, but I suggest not waiting until then. Get yourself on that list.

Wait times are going to be longer than usual at the moment, due to the current Wattpad purge [info on Fanlore | Wattpad subreddit thread], but if you're in line, then your invite will come through eventually.

2. What’s your total Ao3 word count? 1,275,881

3. What fandoms do you write for? Harry Potter/Jily. I briefly wrote for Game of Thrones for a while but my interest in it waned pretty quickly.

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

Shelf Awareness Salmon Fishing in the Olympics Careless Texter Mother Deer (The Completely Unwilling Participants on) The Bachelor

Absolutely unsurprised to learn that my top five fics by kudos are completed.

5. Do you respond to comments? I always intend to. I really do. Sometimes. Sometimes is the answer.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Don’t understand this question.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Pretty much any of my completed fics, but the one that jumps out is Shelf Awareness because they were really living the dream. An October of Unconventional Courtships would have beaten it if not for poor old Peter’s finger.

8. Do you get hate on fics? Not really.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? I think anyone who’s followed me for a while knows that I absolutely despise the one smut scene that I actually published in a fic, and yet I have written more that is as of yet unpublished. I’m not a fan of writing it. One weird or awkward word choice can turn the whole scene comical and I’m always so in my head about it.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? I guess Bachelor fic is a crossover with, well, The Bachelor? I’ve definitely written fics inspired by other things but never a straight-up crossover.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Yep! I had a fic called A Wizard Walks Into a Bar on FFnet and in 2013 someone took it and reposted it under a completely different fandom that I’d never heard of before. The author had stolen another of mine that I can’t remember and a couple of Bee’s too. My brother left a review on it that was like “I love this fic. I loved it even more when my sister first wrote it a few years ago,” and then we reported it and the account got taken down.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? A few, yes.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? I’ve co-written with Kristina and with Bee, so as far as co-writing goes there’s no higher plateau that a person can reach.

14. What’s your all time favorite ship? Jily

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha let’s not go down that road right now.

16. What are your writing strengths? Dialogue and comedy. I think that’s fair for me to say.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? Constantly picking and editing as I go instead of bashing out a draft and going over it later.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I don’t have any tbh. You do you.

Having just read the 20 qs post, I would say one the biggest strengths of your writing that you left off was your sense of character. Especially in CT with all the switching povs it's amazing the way that each scene feels different based on who's eyes we're seeing it through. Like the change isn't just that we're hearing their thoughts, but the very things they noticed about the world around them is different. It really speaks to your deep understanding of you characters. I just love the way you write so much

omg thank u so much for saying this, that's so sweet of you! i was sort of thinking of this when i said "voice," but more in the sense of the different voices for different stories rather than pov switches within the same fic. it means a lot to me that this stands out to you though because in CT especially it is quite conscious! i remember when i was getting back to writing 52 and beginning with doe's pov, i kept writing lines of narration that didn't sound like her, and i had to edit a lot to make it work hahaha

I thought maybe the reblogs meant you were getting back into CT but I am a pessimist so I did not dare hope for a new chapter but you did and woah did it deliver itw as amazing. I love doe and mary so much so seeing a lot of their POV was amazing. Also didn't think we would get much of jily but the little hints and especially this line (“We’re certainly not going to see Grinch, I’ll tell you that much,” James said.) were enough for me. you are amazing and thank you so so much sharing your writing.

16. What are your writing strengths? I do a lot of (an excess of) research, I'm good at description, I am funny when I want to be, I've had some really good prose moments if I do say so myself (I do)

17. What are your writing weaknesses? I am structurally a very weak writer, I can't be succinct, I don't have a great literature background so I never really know what I'm in conversation with and have limited points of reference for writing, I am very bad at writing characters who are subtle about their emotions/romantic feelings, I submit to time pressure and rush myself, the list goes on

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Ooh that's hard because I write a lot of angst....it's gotta be Idolum and Fulcrum, right? I can think of two others still 😅 But I'm going with these, which are two sides of the same coin.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? I think A Thrill Divine, Down My Spine, specifically since it's a no-Voldemort AU friends-to-lovers situation.

8. Do you get hate on fics? I have not (yet) and I'm super grateful for that. I know it'll come, statistically.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? I do! (God Kelsey from a year ago is SHAKING). I think usually I like to connect it to emotion even if it's a pwp situation, but overall I'd say it's pretty vanilla lol.

kingsley shacklebolt is minister for magic, and james doesn't have to (re)practice his patronus charms because it's a tall, bushy-eyebrowed auror who leads him down the poorly lit corridor and not a swarm of hooded barbarities who want to suck out his soul. the auror leaves him by a cell almost to the end of the hallway, and there's nothing at first, just varying shades of darkness everywhere james turns, the echoing beats of water dripping, the muffled rage of waves around the island. he thinks he can hear laughter from somewhere close — a cold, high-pitched female giggling — and he considers just walking out because — christ. this place is mad. but then there's movement from the corner, behind the bars, and then he's in front of him, and james... doesn't know. feels a lot of things. wants to punch him, most of all.

"prongs," says wormtail. no — peter. peter pettigrew. his voice is a scratchy whisper, his face sunken, and his hair a long wispy dead mess. he's thinner than james has ever seen him.

"shut up," says james, voice low. he feels the urge to back away one step, not expecting peter to cling on to the bars and hungrily squeeze his face through them to see him.

"prongs." he says it so reverently, like a god's name. "i'm — what are you — " he's surveying james up and down, drinking in anything he can from beyond azkaban. "prongs, fuck, i'm so happy you're here — "

"i said shut up. i didn't come here for you."

peter looks surprised, then hurt, then his grip on the metal loosens as a maniacal grin starts to spread on his lips. "clearly, you did. you can't help it. dear god, i can't believe i almost gave up."

james blinks at him in incredulity. "what?"

"i am sorry, prongs. i am. and i knew you'd know that, i knew you'd come back for me, but it's been so long — "

james starts to laugh. "are you insane?"

peter shuts up.
