Learning Chinese with Lyrics #06
歌曲: 你啊你啊 (Only You)
歌手: 魏如萱 (waa wei)
So I've been doing songs from Taiwanese artists, but this is the first song that actually has Taiwanese in it! I'll highlight those parts with purple and include Taiwanese -> Mandarin -> English translations for the Taiwanese phrases. I also really really like this cover of it by 老王樂隊. I've been noticing that I can read the vocabulary that I've singled out in previous posts, which means exercise is working, yay 🎉 Thanks to Jocelle Koh for the English translation!
我最喜歡和你一起發生的
I like going through
是最平淡最簡單的日常

Looking at each other pretending things are normal
是最可怕最噁心的事啊
is the most scary and disgusting thing
隱藏 [yǐncáng] - to hide, to conceal
假裝 [jiǎzhuāng] - to feign, to pretend
咁講你不知我愛的只有你 你啊你啊
kám-kóng lí m̄-tsai guá ài--ê tsí-ū lí niā-niā

Exactly how many do you love
麥擱講白賊話

Don't speak those sly words
我的心就要 痛甲一直流血
guá ê sim tiō beh thiànn kah it-ti̍t lâu-hueh
My heart will hurt and continue to bleed

麥擱 [mài koh] - aka 別再講了 (stop speaking)
白賊話 [pe̍h-tsha̍t-uē] - aka 講假話 (telling lies)

哪會憨甲安捏啦

How could it be so
一天兩天三天
tsi̍t-kang nn̄g-kang sann-kang
One day, two days, three days,
駕快你就愛著別人

But it's just a illusion
攏是 [lóng-sī] - aka 全都是 (they are all...)

A Resource for Reading Practice: The Chinese Reading World
I wanted to share a resource for reading practice that I stumbled across recently. It’s called the Chinese Reading World, and it was a project led by the University of Iowa.
The site was put together from 2005 to 2008, so it’s not super up to date. However, there is a ton of content! Everything is sorted into 3 levels: beginning, intermediate, and advanced.
Each level has 30 units, and each unit has 10 lessons. The lessons begin with a vocab pre-test, then there is a reading with some comprehension questions. Lastly, there is a vocab post-test, which is the same as the initial test (at least for the lessons I’ve done so far). There’s audio for each lesson text, but unfortunately it can’t be streamed—you have to download it. There is also an achievement test at the end of each unit.
My experience has actually been that I already know all the words on the vocabulary tests, but the reading passages contain other words that I’m not familiar with.
So far, the readings I’ve encountered are not very long. This is nice since reading longer pieces can be frustrating at times. With shorter readings, you can just read 1 or 2 on some days and read more when you have more time/patience. I believe the readings are taken from Chinese newspapers.
Also, every unit has a theme. With 90 units total, there are bound to be themes that interest you.
Example unit topics:
Directions and Asking Direction 方向和问路
Sports and Outdoor Activities 体育和户外运动
Chinese Music and Musicians 中国音乐和音乐家
Chinese Minorities and Local Customs 地方习俗和民族风情
Chinese Sports and Olympic Games 体育和奥林匹克
Contemporary Chinese Literature and Writers 中国当代文学和作家
The 3 levels also each come with 5 proficiency tests. They seem to be based on vocabulary knowledge, so expanding your vocab is clearly a huge focus of this site. The only thing I’m unclear is about is I’m not sure exactly when the proficiency tests are meant to be taken. After completing all units? Or are they spaced out so you are supposed to take test 1 after the first few units, test 2 after the next few, etc.?
I’ve started working my way through the advanced section this week. With 300 advanced lessons alone, it really feels like I have an infinite number of articles to go through!

The directional "下/上/出/去/来" puzzle guide
I for one still confuse the usage of 出来 and 出去 and other similar structures so here's a guide to slightly depuzzle this puzzle.
上去 (Shàngqù): To go up and away from the speaker
下去 (Xiàqù): To go down and away from the speaker
出去 (Chūqù): To go out and away from the speaker
出来 (Chūlái): To go out and towards the speaker
上来 (Shànglái): To go up and towards the speaker
下来 (Xiàlái): To go down and towards the speaker
过来 (Guòlái): To ask someone to come over to the speaker
过去 (Guòqù): This one is tricky as it can have a few meanings so here are some random examples.
Movement away from the speaker e.g. 我来这家公司工作已经过去五年了= I have been working in this company for the past five years
Movement in time during the past e.g. 过去的年份里,公园里有很多树和花= In the past years, there were many trees and flowers in the park
Here's an illustration I made (it's been a while lol) to make it less (?) confusing:

Every wanted to tell someone to step on a lego in Mandarin? Here's how:
我希望你踩在乐高上。「我希望你踩在樂高上。」
(I've also seen 踩到樂高)
A favorite variation is 我希望你在漆黑的夜里一脚踩上乐高,光脚!「我希望你在漆黑的夜裡一腳踩上樂高,光腳!」

So I was watching a show and the phrase 有話快説,有屁快放 turned up, which was both new and also amusing to me so I googled 有屁快放 to see if it's actually in common usage or not...
Oh yes. Prime pun material for fearmongering health article headline writers. 別憋著!真的要放!I shall add it to my repertoire.

So yesterday I saw someone on 微博 use the term 毛孩子 on a post about their pet cat. My first thought was that it’s probably similar to the English phrase “fur baby” and I was right.
毛 mao2 can be used to refer to hair/fur. 毛孩子 mao2 hai2 zi (or 毛小孩 mao2 xiao3 hai2) is an affectionate way of referring to your pets. I found this short article about the phrase that looks at why it might have become popular. Heads up thought, it is in traditional characters.
Also this article is the first time I’ve ever seen 牠 used irl so that was neat!
Btw: the phrase 铲屎官 chan3 shi3 guan1 is a way of referring to pet owners and it means “poop-scooping official” (as in a government official). I usually see it referring specifically to cat owners, thought apparently it can be used for just pet owners in general judging by this article title.
(side note: absolutely hate the phrase “fur baby” but for some reason 毛孩子 is totally okay to me, idk)

Wishing a very Happy Winter Solstice (Dongzhi Festival) to all of you. Sending you warm greetings on this special day. May the spring come soon.
这是冬的尽头,也是春的开头,虽然你在那头,我在这头,还是把你记在心头。在这寒冷的关头,愿我的祝福温暖你的手头,直达你的心头。冬至快乐!
Traditionally, the Dongzhi Festival (冬至) is also a time for the family to get together. One activity that occurs during these get-togethers is the making and eating of Tang Yuan (汤圆) or balls of glutinous rice, which symbolize reunion. In our house, mum usually makes the pink version of the dumplings without any filling inside. She adds some “Peach” coloured food powder to the glutinous rice flour then mixed in some water to form a pink dough. Next she portioned the dough and roll them into small balls before cooking them in water sweetened with sugar and flavoured with pandan leaves.

Two Chinese words you do not want to confuse (trust me):
出轨 | 出軌 chūguǐ - to be derailed; to go off the rails / to overstep the bounds / to have an extramarital affair
出柜 | 出櫃 chūguì - to come out of the closet; to reveal one's sexual orientation
I often confuse these two, so if I read about a celebrity cheating scandal, there's a 50% chance I'm accidentally going to say said celeb came out of the closet instead.
