oh this is SO cute
Could you maybe do Orpheus and Eurydice’s first meeting in the apartments au from Orpheus’ POV? I’d love to see what was going through his head!
Orpheus is, quite frankly, falling apart.
He needs to nail this final project. Well–he’s done well enough throughout the year that even if he doesn’t get a high score, he’ll pass, and it’s not like job resumes look at your grade, they just look at where you graduated from and your degree; but Orpheus really cares about this, okay, and he loves his professor and he has to do this right or else everyone will be disappointed in him and he’ll just shrivel up and die.
And he’s well aware of the fact that that last part is just his anxiety acting up. But he feels it all the same, and knowing those things are fake doesn’t make the irrational feelings fake either.
So: he needs to get this right. The problem is that nothing he can come up with sounds right or feels right, and he knows what it should feel like–it needs to click–but it won’t. He can’t quite get there somehow, but he doesn’t know what’s wrong. Besides that, he’s written and erased off the paper so damn much that he feels it starting to wear away, and what he’s actually written  down is getting lost in a fog of imprinted and smeared graphite. There’s a coffee stain in the corner. He’s going to  have to re-copy all of this onto clean paper to hand in, but that’s doable. That’s just busywork. That’s fine. What’s not fine is how much trouble he’s having with this stupid project. (”Stupid” is an exaggeration. He’s just frustrated.)

“i’ll wait for you” AHHHHH
um just soft orphydice plsnthx— maybe where orpheus says something that sparks eurydices flight mode?? but she ends up staying because of him and everything that he is?? but them just being soft and loving towards eachother UGH
THIS GOT WAY LONGER THAN I EVER EXPECTED IT TO. pre-all ive ever known.
———
“you’ll be back soon, though, right?” eurydice had her elbows on the bar and cradled her chin in one hand. “i’ll miss you.” she teased. orpheus was only going out for some olives—hermes had run out.
orpheus smiled and took her hand in his before picking up his denim jacket in preparation to go outside. “i promise.”
suddenly, eurydice’s blood turned to ice. she hated that word. she took her hand away from orpheus and stepped back.
orpheus’s brow furrowed in confusion. “‘rydice…?”
“don’t say that.” she said quickly. “don’t say that, orpheus.”
“say what?” orpheus frowned and he put his jacket back on the bar. “eurydice, what did i say?”
eurydice felt like she was watching herself react from above. she saw her left fist clench and unclench. she saw her jaw tighten. she saw her eyes narrow. “don’t promise me anything.”
“what do you mean? eurydice, i don’t understand.” his gaze was wounded, and eurydice couldn’t look directly into his eyes.
“you can’t promise me anything.” she said, her words clipped and staccato, far from the easygoing drawl she had adopted before. “no one can.”
“do you not believe in promises?” orpheus asked softly.
no, eurydice wanted to yell. promises don’t exist.
“i…”
“do you not trust me?”
“no, orpheus, it’s…”
“eurydice—“
“stop!” eurydice shouted. orpheus flinched, and eurydice immediately regretted raising her voice. “i’m sorry.” she exhaled. “i’m sorry. i…i do trust you, orpheus.” the words felt hollow. orpheus still had the injured-deer-in-headlights look in his eyes, the one that tore eurydice’s heart in two.
orpheus said nothing, but leaned forward, resting his trembling hands on the bar.
“but don’t promise me anything. please.” eurydice fiddled with one of her bracelets. “it never ends well.”
“i can make it end well for you.” orpheus spoke up.
eurydice bit her lip. “no you can’t.” she whispered.
“yes, i can.”
his unrelenting optimism was like nothing she’d ever seen in anyone before. he believed. he believed in her.
it was terrifying.
“orpheus.” she shook her head and risked a glance up at his eyes. they shone with unshed tears. eurydice’s heart sank. “you don’t understand.”
“what don’t i understand??” he asked. “i can make everything good for you, eurydice. i can make everything end well—i’ll do anything for you.”
eurydice recoiled. his devotion was unshakeable, and it scared her. if he believed in her like that now, what would happen when she finally let him down?
“stop that.” eurydice felt a tightness in her throat and clenched her jaw to stave off tears. “please, orpheus. i can’t…”
orpheus went around the bar so there was no barrier between them. he took her hand. “let me do this for you.”
a tear escaped eurydice’s eye and slid down her cheek. orpheus swiped it away before it could reach her chin. “i won’t promise you anything, i p—“ he shut his eyes tight and pressed his lips together to stop the word “promise” from coming out and eurydice almost laughed. “i mean it.”
“i’ll wait for you. okay?” he smiled faintly. “i’ll wait until you’re ready. and even if you’re never ready, that’s okay.”
eurydice pressed her hand to her mouth to stop from crying. no man—hell, no one at all—had ever spoke to her so gently. orpheus spoke words made of cotton candy clouds. she couldn’t help but believe them.
“but i can tell you for certain that mister hermes will be annoyed with me if i don’t get those olives.”
eurydice shook her head with a smile and wiped her eyes. “go, boy.” she laughed despite herself. “be back soon.”
orpheus looked at her one last time before he left, almost as if he was going to say something, but he didn’t.

All your words are but to say: ‘you are a woman, and your part is in the house. But when the men have died in battle and honour, you have leave to be burned in the house, for the men will need it no more.’

THE SILVER CHAIR by C. S. LEWIS
“One word, Ma'am," he said, coming back from the fire; limping, because of the pain. "One word. All you've been saying is quite right, I shouldn't wonder. I'm a chap who always liked to know the worst and then put the best face I can on it. So I won't deny any of what you said. But there's one thing more to be said, even so. Suppose we have only dreamed, or made up, all those things - trees and grass and sun and moon and stars and Aslan himself. Suppose we have. Then all I can say is that, in that case, the made-up things seem a good deal more important than the real ones. Suppose this black pit of a kingdom of yours is the only world. Well, it strikes me as a pretty poor one. And that's a funny thing, when you come to think of it. We're just babies making up a game, if you're right. But four babies playing a game can make a playworld which licks your real world hollow. That's why I'm going to stand by the play-world. I'm on Aslan's side even if there isn't any Aslan to lead it. I'm going to live as like a Narnian as I can even if there isn't any Narnia. So, thanking you kindly for our supper, if these two gentlemen and the young lady are ready, we're leaving your court at once and setting out in the dark to spend our lives looking for Overland. Not that our lives will be very long, I should think; but that's a small loss if the world's as dull a place as you say.”

I get a feeling that after the crash, when she grew older, Susan would live in a place like this. A place with mountains and green rolling hills, A place with forests and rivers and the sea nearby. Places like this she’d always felt drawn to, but she could never tell why. A places like Narnia.
I feel like one day she’s be sitting on a cliff or in the grass watching the sunset
And she would remember.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
oh wow I love this!!!!
Here’s my contribution to the @inkheartexchange for @tinuviel-tinuviel : ) I hope you like it <3 It was certainly fun to write
A Family Reunion
The snowflakes were bigger in the Inkworld, Meggie had noticed. It was her second winter in this world, and this time, she could actually enjoy it. The peace and quiet of bright winter days. The trees around the lonely farmhouse were covered in a thick, white blanket, slumbering and sometimes whispering in their sleep.
It was quiet most of the time, but today, voices and laughter sounded loudly through the trees. Dustfinger and his family had come to visit, Roxane, Brianna, Jehan and Farid were all there, and the Black Prince had come, too. Additionally, Elinor and Darius had decided to visit as well, and Fenoglio had also tagged along. Their house was pretty crowded right now, but Meggie did not mind. Their home was so full of life now, and she enjoyed the happy and relaxed atmosphere. Elinor was cooing at Dante, Fenoglio was telling the Prince and Darius about the song he intended to write next, and everyone seemed lively and busy. Meggie slowly turned around, searching for someone, until she found Farid standing in a corner, watching the family he had found with a smile on his lips.
Farid held a steaming mug of tea in his hand, although he seemed to have forgotten about it. When he noticed Meggie’s gaze, he looked up and his smile grew even wider.
It had been a while since they had last seen each other. Farid travelled a lot, visited villages all over Lombrica and Argenta and sometimes even further away. But he always came back again. Back to Dustfinger, back to Gwin and Jink, and back to Meggie. Their relationship had changed, but they were still dear to each other.
Meggie was happy to see him. She went to Farid, who put down his mug, and drew him into a hug.
“Where have you been?” Meggie asked and listened as he told her about his latest journey. He had been in the south, at the coast, and even there the people had already heard of him. The fire-dancer’s apprentice, almost as good and as famous as his master, the boy who was loved by the flames he played with. Meggie smiled as she listened to him.
“I think you’d enjoy Luvarno,” Farid told her with bright eyes, “It’s such a beautiful city! And the small villages along the way, too. Maybe you could go there with your parents when Dante is a little older?”
“Maybe, yes. Although travelling is definitely easier in the other world!” Meggie laughed, “But you know what? Let’s take a little stroll outside. The forest is so beautiful in the snow, and I haven’t had the chance to show you yet. You’ll love it!”
Outside, the air was cold, and Meggie wrapped her cloak closer around herself. But the sun was shining, making everything glitter and sparkle. She breathed in and felt at peace.
It was so quiet. The songbirds huddled together between the bare twigs of ancient trees, the fairies were sleeping in their nests, but some creatures were still awake, despite the cold. A squirrel was scurrying through some branches. A crow watched them with wise eyes as the wind ruffled its feathers. Between the undergrowth, the bushy tip of a reddish tail disappeared. Meggie smiled. Sometimes, the Inkworld was so beautiful that she could barely believe that it was real.
They walked for a while, until Meggie began to shiver slightly. Farid noticed that she was cold, and rubbed his fingers together. A few whispered words later, and sparks were dancing on his palms. Carefully, he took Meggie’s hands in his and warmed them.
Meggie sighed as the warmth seeped into her chilly bones.
“I wish I could do that, too.”
Farid raised an eyebrow, and then slipped a hand into one of his pockets to take out a small packet. Meggie knew that this was where he kept a small amount of firehoney, and suddenly she felt a flutter of excitement rise in her chest, the same kind of excitement she felt when Resa told her about the years she had spend in the Inkworld, the same flutter she felt when she watched Mo save a poor mistreated book.
“I can teach you,” he offered, the smile dancing in his dark eyes, and Meggie all but grinned back at him.
“That would be great.”

Dustfinger’s return to the Inkworld, for my giftee, @off-to-elsewhere! You said that you liked the Inkworld settings and this scene has always stuck out in my mind because it’s so beautifully described-- with the little white flowers and the colored canopy and the drowsy buzzing fire-elves. Made as part of the @inkheartexchange
